Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)](ClO4) (1-3) of N-2-pyridylmethylidine-2-hydroxyphenylamine (HL) Schiff base and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d: 2',3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2) or dipyrido3,2-a: 2',3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property, photo-induced DNA cleavage activity and photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells studied. The crystal structure of 1 shows the presence of a VO2+ moiety in VO2N4 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band at similar to 830 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative V(V)-V(IV) response near 0.5 V versus SCE and a reductive V(IV)/V(III) response near -0.65 V in DMF -0.1 M TBAP. The complexes that are avid binders to CT DNA giving K-b values within 7.1 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(5) M-1, do not show any significant chemical nuclease activity in presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or glutathione. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm forming both O-1(2) and (OH)-O-center dot radicals and in near-IR light of 785 nm forming (OH)-O-center dot radicals. The dppz complex exhibits photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells (IC50 = 6.8 mu M). Flow-cytometric study on this complex shows a high sub-G1 phase in light compared to dark indicating PDT effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Activation of the B-H sigma-bond of amine-boranes on the chromium(0) center of arene chromium tricarbonyl complexes (eta(6)-arene) Cr(CO)(3) (arene = fluorobenzene, 1a; benzene, 1b and mesitylene, 1c) has been studied. Photolysis of 1b in presence of ammonia-borane (H3N center dot BH3, AB) and tert-butylamine-borane ((BuH2N)-Bu-t center dot BH3, TBAB) resulted in H-2 evolution and precipitation of a BNHx polymer. On the other hand, photolysis in the presence of trimethylamine-borane (Me3N center dot BH3, TMAB) resulted in the formation of a sigma-borane complex (2) along with Cr(CO)(5)(eta(1)-HBH2 center dot NMe3) (3). The sigma-borane complexes (eta(6)-arene) Cr-( CO)(2)(eta(1)-HBH2 center dot NMe3) (arene = fluorobenzene, 2a; benzene, 2b and mesitylene, 2c) were characterized in solution by H-1, B-11, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Electron withdrawing substituents on the arene ring provide the more stable sigma-borane moiety in this series of complexes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ligand bis(diphenylphosphino)aniline (dppan) has been shown to be a versatile ligand sporting different coordination modes and geometries as dictated by copper(I) and the counter ion. The molecular structures of its Cu(I) complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The ligand was found in a chelating mode and monomeric complexes were formed when the ligand to copper ratio was 2: 1 and the anion was non-coordinating. However, with thiocyanate as the counter anion, the ligand was found to adopt two different modes, with one ligand chelating and the other acting as a monodentate ligand. With CuX (X = Cl, Br), dppan formed a tetrameric complex when the ligand and metal were reacted in the ratio of 1:1. But reactions containing ligand and metal in the ratios of 1: 2 or 2: 1, resulted in the formation of a mixture of species in solution. Crystallization however, led to the isolation of the tetrameric complex. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectra of the isolated tetramers did not show the presence of chelated structures in solution. Tetra-alkylammonium salts were added to solutions of various complexes of dppan and studied by P-31{H-1} NMR to probe the effect of anions on the stability of complexes in solution. The Cu-dppan complexes were robust and did not interconvert with other structures in solution unlike the bis(diphenylphosphino) isopropylamine complexes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Metallo-beta-lactamases (m beta l) and phosphotriesterase (PTE) are zinc(II) enzymes, which hydrolyze the beta-lactam antibiotics and toxic organophosphotriesters, respectively. In the present work, we have synthesized a few asymmetric phenolate-based ligands by sequential Mannich reaction and their corresponding zinc(II) complexes. These zinc(II) complexes were studied for their m beta l and PTE activities. It is shown that the zinc(II) complexes can hydrolyze oxacillin, the beta-lactam antibiotic, at much higher rates as compared to the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl diphenylphosphate (PNPDPP), the phosphotriester. Among the complexes studied, the binuclear asymmetric complex 1 having a water molecule coordinated to one of the zinc(II) ions exhibits much better mbl activity than the mononuclear complexes. However, the mononuclear zinc(II) complexes having labile chloride ions exhibit significant PTE activity, which can be ascribed to the replacement of chloride ions by hydroxide ions during hydrolysis reactions. Schiff base vanadium(IV) complexes of phenyl esters of the two acidic amino acids, i.e., aspartic and glutamic acid, were synthesized. The phenyl esters of these amino acids were synthesized by conventional method whereas the Schiff base vanadium(IV) complexes were synthesized using microwave irradiation. The complexes were characterized by spectroscopic tools such as IR, 1H NMR, mass (ES), ESR, and UV visible spectroscopy. All the complexes were studied for antibacterial and antifungal activity and found to be moderately active.

A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

The He I photoelectron spectra of bromine, methylamine, and their complex have been obtained, and the spectra show that lone-pair orbital energy of nitrogen in methylamine is stabilized by 1.8 eV and the bromine orbital energies are destabilized by about 0.5 eV due to complexation. Ab initio calculations have been performed on the charge-transfer complexes of Br-2 with ammonia and methyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamines at the 3-21G*, 6-311G, and 6-311G* levels and also with effective core potentials. Calculations predict donor and acceptor orbital energy shifts upon complexation, and there is a reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Complexation energies have been corrected for BSSE. Frequency analysis has confirmed that ammonia and trimethylamine form complexes with C-3v symmetry and methylamine and dimethylamine with C-s symmetry. Calculations reveal that the lone-pair orbital of nitrogen in amine and the sigma* orbital of Br-2 are involved in the charge-transfer interaction. LANL1DZ basis seems to be consistent and give a reliable estimate of the complexation energy. The computed complexation energies, orbital energy shifts, and natural bond orbital analysis show that the strength of the complex gradually increases from ammonia to trimethylamine.

A beta (39-43 aminoacid residues) is the principal peptide component of amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A beta peptide is derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) in which mutations give rise to many forms of familial AD. Aluminium is reported to play a key role in inducing conformational change in the synthetic beta-amyloid peptide (1-40)from alpha-helix to beta-pleated sheet, leading to aggregation and fibrillar formation. We have studied the interaction of amino acid-Al complexes such as D-Asp-Al and L-Glu-Al with A beta(1-40) in TFE/buffer (70% TFE and 30% H2O v/v pH 6.7) mixture using CD spectroscopy. The interaction of either of these amino acid complexes with A beta(1-40) results in loss of alpha-helical content and the peptide is more unstructured compared to free Al3+ in the solution. Our data strongly support the idea, that the Al3+ in the form of aminoacid-Al complexes is more effective in inducing random coil conformation in the A beta peptide than the free Al3+ present in the solution.

A series of binuclear Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were synthesized by the template condensation of glyoxal, biacetyl or benzil bis-hydrazide, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and Co(11), Ni(II) or Cu(II) chloride in a 2:2:2 M ratio in ethanol. These 22-membered macrocyclic complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic, molar conductance, spectral, thermal and fluorescence studies. Elemental analyses suggest the complexes have a 2:1 stoichiometry of the type (M2LX2]center dot nH(2)O and Ni(2)LX(2)2H(2)O]center dot nH(2)O (where M = Co(II) and Cu(II); L = H2L1, H2L2 and H2L3; X = Cl; n = 2). From the spectroscopic and magnetic studies, it has been concluded that the Co(11) and Cu(11) complexes display a five coordinated square pyramidal geometry and the Ni(II) complexes have a six coordinated octahedral geometry. The Schiff bases and their metal complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by the MIC method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Treatment of the lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, cis-{EtNP(OR)}(3) [R = C6H4Br-4 (L-1) or C6H4Br-2 (L-2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(NBD)] (NBD = norbornadiene) yields the mononuclear complexes [Mo(CO)(4)L-1] (1) and [Mo(CO)(4)L-2] (2). which have been characterised by IR, NMR (P-31 and H-1) and FAB mass spectral data. The structure of 1 has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The structural and conformational changes brought about by complexation are discussed in terms of a bonding model based on "negative hyperconjugation". (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Oligomeric copper(I) clusters are formed by the insertion reaction of copper(I) aryloxides into heterocumulenes. The effect of varying the steric demands of the heterocumulene and the aryloxy group on the nuclearity of the oligomers formed has been probed. Reactions with copper(I)2-methoxyphenoxide and copper(I)2-methylphenoxide with PhNCS result in the formation of hexameric complexes hexakis[N-phenylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolato copper(I)] 3 and 4 respectively. Single crystal X-ray data confirmed the structure of 3. Similar insertion reactions of CS2 with the copper(I) aryloxides formed by 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and 2,6-dimethylphenol result in oligomeric copper(I) complexes 7 and 8 having the (aryloxy)thioxanthate ligand. Complex 7 was confirmed to be a tetramer from single crystal X-ray crystallography. Reactions carried out with 2-mercaptopyrimidine, which has ligating properties similar to N-alkylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolate, result in the formation of an insoluble polymeric complex 11. The fluorescence spectra of oligomeric complexes are helpful in determining their nuclearity. Ir has been shown that a decrease in the steric requirements of either the heterocumulene or aryloxy parts of the ligand can compensate for steric constraints acid facilitate oligomerization. Complexes of the formulation [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(O-2-C6H4-CH=NC6H4-4-CH3)(L)](ClO4), where L is gamma-picoline, 4-vinylpyridine, 1-methylimidazole and 1-vinylimidazole have been prepared and characterised. The molecular structure of the vinylpyridine adduct has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group P2(1) with the following cell dimensions for the C31H33CIN2O5Ru(M = 650.11): a = 10.890(2)Angstrom, b = 22.295(9)Angstrom, c = 12.930(2)Angstrom, beta = 109.30(2)degrees(3), V = 2964(l)Angstrom 3, Z = 4; D-c = 1.457g cm(-3), lambda(Mo-K alpha) = 0.7107 Angstrom; mu(Mo-K alpha)= 6.61 cm(-1); T = 293 K; R = 0.0359 (wR(2) = 0.0981) for 4819 reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The structure shows the non-bonding nature of the double bond of the 4-vinylpyridine ligand in the complex in which the metal is bonded to the eta(6)-p-cymene, the N, O-bidentate chelating schiff-base and the unidentate N-donor pyridine ligands.

N,N'-Bis(ferrocenylmethylidene)-p-phenylenediamine 1 and N-(ferrocenylmethylidene) aniline 2 are readily synthesized by Schiff base condensation of appropriate units. Iodine (I-2), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (CA), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) form charge transfer complexes with 1 and 2. IR spectroscopy suggests an increase in the amount of charge transferred from the ferrocenyl ring to the oxidant in the order, I-2 < CA < TCNQ < TCNE approximate to DDQ. EPR spectra of the oxidized binuclear complexes are indicative of localized species containing iron- and carbon-centered radicals. The Mossbauer spectrum of the iodine oxidized complex of 1 reveals the presence of both Fe(III) and Fe(II) centers. Variable temperature magnetic and Mossbauer studies show that the ratio of Fe(III)/Fe(II) centers varies as a function of temperature. The larger Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio at lower temperatures is best explained by a retro charge transfer from the iodide to the iron(III) metal center. There is negligible solvent effect on the formation of the iodine oxidized charge transfer complex of 1. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Copper(I)-dppm complexes encapsulating the oxyanions ClO4-, NO3-, CH3C6H4CO2-, SO42-, and WO42- have been synthesized either by reduction of the corresponding Cu(II) salts and treatment with dppm, or by treating the complex [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(3)](BF4)(2) (1) (dmcn = dimethyl cyanamide) with the respective anion. The isolated complexes [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(2)(ClO4)] (ClO4) (2), [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(2)(NO3)] (NO3) (3), Cu-2(dppm)(2)(NO3)(2) (4), [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(CH3C6H4CO2)(2)]dmcn.2THF (5), Cu-2(dppm)(2)(SO4) (6), and [Cu-3(dppm)(3)(Cl)(WO4)] 0.5H(2)O (7) have been characterized by IR, H-1 and P-31{H-1} NMR, UV-vis, and emission spectroscopy. The solid-state molecular structure of complexes 1, 2, 4, and 7 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Pertinent crystal data are as follows: for 1, monoclinic P2(1)/c, a = 11.376(10) Angstrom, b = 42.503(7) Angstrom, c = 13.530(6) Angstrom, beta = 108.08(2)degrees, V = 6219(3) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for 2, monoclinic P2(1)/c, a = 21.600(3) Angstrom, b = 12.968(3) Angstrom, c = 23.050(3) Angstrom, beta = 115.97(2)degrees, V = 5804(17) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for 4, triclinic
, a = 10.560(4) Angstrom, b = 10.553(3) Angstrom, c = 22.698(3) Angstrom, alpha = 96.08(2)degrees, beta = 96.03(2)degrees, gamma = 108.31(2)degrees, V = 2362(12) Angstrom(3), Z = 2; and for 7, orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 14.407(4) Angstrom, b = 20.573(7) Angstrom, c = 24.176(6) Angstrom, V = 7166(4) Angstrom(3), Z = 4. Analyses of the crystallographic and spectroscopic data of these complexes reveal the nature of interactions between the Cu-I-dppm core and oxyanion. The anchoring of the oxyanion to the Cu-n(dppm)(n) unit is primarily through coordination to the metal, but the noncovalent C-H ... O interactions between the methylene and phenyl protons of the dppm and oxygen atoms of the oxyanion play a significant role. The solid-state emission spectra for complexes 1-6 are very similar but different from 7. In CDCl3 solution, addition of ClO4- or NO3- (as their tetrabutylammonium salts) to 1 establishes a rapid equilibrium between the anion-complexed and uncomplexed forms. The association constant values for ClO4- and NO3- have been estimated from the P-31{H-1} NMR spectra.

Aqueous solutions of acetates and nitrates of zinc and cobalt have been spray decomposed to study the production of extended solid solutions in the ZnO-CoO system. Examination of the products of a variety of synthesis conditions indicates that up to 70% CoO may be retained in the solid solution in the wurzite phase, even though a comparison of the equilibrium solubility in the phase diagram might be expected to favor the formation of a rock-salt-based solid solution.
