Since the beginning of time man has used body ornaments, often-simple element of decoration, passing by the object ritualistic and religious icon, also as a symbol to the demonstration of status and power. Many of these objects have survived to today, but the vast majority is lost in time or was dismantled to reuse the material in new jewelry. The history of jewelry uses the pieces that have survived intact, documents and images of those jewels. This work uses of Visual Arts, more specifically the portrait art of, to analyze the mystical amulets of child`s protection jewel in works of painters Juan Pantoja dela Cruz and Diego Velásquez.

Studies on the Helminth Fauna of Alaska. XIII. Disease in the Sea Otter, with Special Reference to Helminth Parasites

During the spring of 1951, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the removal of sea otter, Enhydra lutris (L)., from the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, for the purpose of restocking range from which the animals have long been exterminated. The decision to undertake this activity was influenced by the nature of military operations planned for the island later the same year. The capture and removal of the otter were under the supervision of Mr. Robert D. Jones, Biologist, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Heavy losses among the animals shortly after capture made the venture unsuccessful. Many deaths were concurrent among animals in the wild state. The writer was asked to investigate the causes of disease in the sea otter, and it is the purpose of this paper to report the results of these investigation, with special reference to helminth parasites.

Abastecimiento y distribución de tabacos en el marco del estanco general español (siglos XVII y XVIII)

[ES]El presente estudio pretende introducir una serie de propuestas cuyo contraste empírico resulta dificultoso en ocasiones por encontrarse relacionado con actividades económicas que ofrecen un escaso rastro documental, como son la gestión de rentas bajo la fórmula de arriendo o la influencia del contrabando sobre el consumo real de un producto como el tabaco. El propósito en este sentido es diverso: profundizar en el conocimiento de las fórmulas y géneros que abastecen el monopolio tabaquero durante el siglo XVII; analizar los cambios introducidos en la gestión de la renta durante el primer tercio del XVIII dirigidos a obtener un mayor control sobre el monopolio tabaquero; y, finalmente, abordar la importancia creciente durante la segunda mitad de la centuria dieciochesca de las adquisiciones de tabaco de humo con respecto al inicial dominio del consumo de tabaco polvo
