For a polish space M and a Banach space E let B1 (M, E) be the space of first Baire class functions from M to E, endowed with the pointwise weak topology. We study the compact subsets of B1 (M, E) and show that the fundamental results proved by Rosenthal, Bourgain, Fremlin, Talagrand and Godefroy, in case E = R, also hold true in the general case. For instance: a subset of B1 (M, E) is compact iff it is sequentially (resp. countably) compact, the convex hull of a compact bounded subset of B1 (M, E) is relatively compact, etc. We also show that our class includes Gulko compact. In the second part of the paper we examine under which conditions a bounded linear operator T : X ∗ → Y so that T |BX ∗ : (BX ∗ , w∗ ) → Y is a Baire-1 function, is a pointwise limit of a sequence (Tn ) of operators with T |BX ∗ : (BX ∗ , w∗ ) → (Y, · ) continuous for all n ∈ N. Our results in this case are connected with classical results of Choquet, Odell and Rosenthal.

We prove that if a Banach space X admits a Lipschitz β-smooth bump function, then (X ∗ , weak ∗ ) is fragmented by a metric, generating a topology, which is stronger than the τβ -topology. We also use this to prove that if X ∗ admits a Lipschitz Gateaux-smooth bump function, then X is sigma-fragmentable.

It is proved that a representable non-separable Banach space does not admit uniformly Gâteaux-smooth norms. This is true in particular for C(K) spaces where K is a separable non-metrizable Rosenthal compact space.

The first motivation for this note is to obtain a general version of the following result: let E be a Banach space and f : E → R be a differentiable function, bounded below and satisfying the Palais-Smale condition; then, f is coercive, i.e., f(x) goes to infinity as ||x|| goes to infinity. In recent years, many variants and extensions of this result appeared, see [3], [5], [6], [9], [14], [18], [19] and the references therein. A general result of this type was given in [3, Theorem 5.1] for a lower semicontinuous function defined on a Banach space, through an approach based on an abstract notion of subdifferential operator, and taking into account the “smoothness” of the Banach space. Here, we give (Theorem 1) an extension in a metric setting, based on the notion of slope from [11] and coercivity is considered in a generalized sense, inspired by [9]; our result allows to recover, for example, the coercivity result of [19], where a weakened version of the Palais-Smale condition is used. Our main tool (Proposition 1) is a consequence of Ekeland’s variational principle extending [12, Corollary 3.4], and deals with a function f which is, in some sense, the “uniform” Γ-limit of a sequence of functions.

We prove that in quadratic perturbations of generic Hamiltonian vector fields with two saddle points and one center there can appear at most two limit cycles. This bound is exact.

We prove that if f is a real valued lower semicontinuous function on a Banach space X and if there exists a C^1, real valued Lipschitz continuous function on X with bounded support and which is not identically equal to zero, then f is Lipschitz continuous of constant K provided all lower subgradients of f are bounded by K. As an application, we give a regularity result of viscosity supersolutions (or subsolutions) of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in infinite dimensions which satisfy a coercive condition. This last result slightly improves some earlier work by G. Barles and H. Ishii.

The main concern of this paper is to present some improvements to results on the existence or non-existence of countably additive Borel measures that are not Radon measures on Banach spaces taken with their weak topologies, on the standard axioms (ZFC) of set-theory. However, to put the results in perspective we shall need to say something about consistency results concerning measurable cardinals.

We prove that, under certain conditions, the capacity of an optical communication channel with in-line, nonlinear filtering (regeneration) elements can be higher than the Shannon capacity for the corresponding linear Gaussian white noise channel. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We review the recent progress of information theory in optical communications, and describe the current experimental results and associated advances in various individual technologies which increase the information capacity. We confirm the widely held belief that the reported capacities are approaching the fundamental limits imposed by signal-to-noise ratio and the distributed non-linearity of conventional optical fibres, resulting in the reduction in the growth rate of communication capacity. We also discuss the techniques which are promising to increase and/or approach the information capacity limit.

A dichotomysimilar property for a class of homogeneous differential equations in an arbitrary Banach space is introduced. By help of them, existence of quasi bounded solutions of the appropriate nonhomogeneous equation is proved.
