Determining the formation temperature of minerals using fluid inclusions is a crucial step in understanding rock-forming scenarios. Unfortunately, fluid inclusions in minerals formed at low temperature, such as gypsum, are commonly in a metastable monophase liquid state. To overcome this problem, ultra-short laser pulses can be used to induce vapor bubble nucleation, thus creating a stable two-phase fluid inclusion appropriate for subsequent measurements of the liquid-vapor homogenization temperature, T-h. In this study we evaluate the applicability of T-h data to accurately determine gypsum formation temperatures. We used fluid inclusions in synthetic gypsum crystals grown in the laboratory at different temperatures between 40 degrees C and 80 degrees C under atmospheric pressure conditions. We found an asymmetric distribution of the T-h values, which are systematically lower than the actual crystal growth temperatures, T-g; this is due to (1) the effect of surface tension on liquid-vapor homogenization, and (2) plastic deformation of the inclusion walls due to internal tensile stress occurring in the metastable state of the inclusions. Based on this understanding, we have determined growth temperatures of natural giant gypsum crystals from Naica (Mexico), yielding 47 +/- 1.5 degrees C for crystals grown in the Cave of Swords (120 m below surface) and 54.5 +/- 2 degrees C for giant crystals grown in the Cave of Crystals (290 m below surface). These results support the earlier hypothesis that the population and the size of the Naica crystals were controlled by temperature. In addition, this experimental method opens a door to determining the growth temperature of minerals forming in low-temperature environments.

A 58-year-old male patient presented episodes of palpitations in the context of atrioventricular block treated by a dual-chamber pacemaker. Clinical and electrophysiological studies identified the tachyarrhythmia to be bundle branch re-entrant ventricular tachycardia, which was successfully treated by radiofrequency ablation of the proximal right bundle branch.

This report describes the use of transluminal coil embolization to treat pseudoaneurysm of deep femoral artery branch in two patients. The pseudoaneurysms had developed after coronary angiographv in one patient and after hip replacement in the other. Immediate control angiography after embolization procedures demonstrated complete closure of the pseudoaneurysms. During follow-up of 19 and 3 months, respectively, there was no recurrent bleeding. The aim of this case report is to show the advances in endovascular microcatheter technology, and embolic materials, that made percutaneous transluminal embolization of arterial pseudoaneurysms safe and efficient. In addition, it keeps the medical personnel aware of vascular injuries at the access site related to endovascular procedures as well as vascular complications of total hip arthroplasty. It calls their attention to the possibility of endovascular treatment as an alternative to surgery.

The treatment of intracranial aneurysms is changing as endovascular obliteration possibilities and long-term results are being published in regard to outcome. However, not all aneurysms are amenable to direct endovascular or surgical treatment. In such situations, a high flow bypass for flow preservation can be considered as indirect treatment alternative, enabling a trapping of the aneurysm or occlusion of the feeding artery. We present the case history of a 57 year-old patient suffering of a recurrent giant intracranial carotid aneurysm. The aneurysm could be excluded using a new cerebral high-flow bypass technique for which no temporary occlusion of any intracranial vessels is required. This technique reduces the risks of perioperative neurological complications.

A 30 year old female was admitted to the hospital with cardiogenic shock due to cardiac tamponade. A ruptured giant coronary artery fistula (CAF) originating from the left main coronary artery draining into the right atrium was identified as the cause. In this case report we describe the clinical course with emphasis on diagnostic work-up and imaging.

The giant cell arteritis and its symptoms are usually non-specific and accompanied with symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica. As complications of the giant cell arteritis ischemia, infarction or rupture of the damaged vessel can occur. We report on a 56-year-old female patient, who suffered for one year about weight loss, tiredness and intolerance as well as symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy showed normal findings. In the context of the malignancy search we made a computer tomography and magnet resonance tomography. The data showed an enlargement and an enhancement of the aorta, which led us to the suspicion of a giant cell arteritis. We started immediately with a medical treatment. The biopsy of the arteries temporales supported histological the diagnosis.

In Malani and Neilsen (1992) we have proposed alternative estimates of survival function (for time to disease) using a simple marker that describes time to some intermediate stage in a disease process. In this paper we derive the asymptotic variance of one such proposed estimator using two different methods and compare terms of order 1/n when there is no censoring. In the absence of censoring the asymptotic variance obtained using the Greenwood type approach converges to exact variance up to terms involving 1/n. But the asymptotic variance obtained using the theory of the counting process and results from Voelkel and Crowley (1984) on semi-Markov processes has a different term of order 1/n. It is not clear to us at this point why the variance formulae using the latter approach give different results.
