Non-relativistic and relativistic self-consistent Hartree- Fock-Slater and Dirac-Slater models have been used to calculate one-electron energy levels and ionization energies for UF_5. The calculations were performed in an assumed structure of C_4v symmetry with the uranium atom at the center of mass of the molecule. The spacing and level ordering are compared with earlier results obtained with the MS X\alpha method using the muffin-tin approximation. Connections with the multiphoton isotope separation scheme of UF_6 are discussed.

We report on the solution of the Hartree-Fock equations for the ground state of the H_2 molecule using the finite element method. Both the Hartree-Fock and the Poisson equations are solved with this method to an accuracy of 10^-8 using only 26 x 11 grid points in two dimensions. A 41 x 16 grid gives a new Hartree-Fock benchmark to ten-figure accuracy.

A theoretical study of the physicochemical properties of elements 104, 105, and 106 and their compounds in the gas phase and aqueous solutions has been undertaken using relativistic atomic and molecular codes. Trends in properties such as bonding, ionization potentials, electron affinities, energies of electronic transitions, stabilities of oxidation states etc. have been defined within the corresponding chemical groups and within the transactinides. These trends are shown to be determined by increasing relativistic effects within the groups. The behaviour of some gas phase compounds and complexes in solutions is predicted for the gas chromatography and solvent extraction experiments. Redox potentials in aqueous solutions of these elements are estimated.

For the angular dependence of quasimolecular X-ray emission in heavy ion colliding systems we present a semiclassical adiabatic model taking into account spontaneous dipole radiation. Using the most characteristic levels from a DFS-correlation diagram we are able to explain the behaviour of the observed anisotropy.

Energy spectra of electrons ejected from collisions between a carbon foil and Ne projectiles with energies between 1.4 and 20 MeV have been measured. Continuous and discrete electron energy distributions are observed. Auger transitions of foil-excited Ne have been studied. Using relativistic Dirac-Fock multiconfiguration calculations, most of the measured Auger transitions have been identified.

The various approximations of vacuum polarization potential and the higher order corrections up to \alpha^3 are reviewed and quantitatively dicussed. The quadrupol part of the vacuum polarization is established. It leads rather straight forward to a small contribution of vacuum polarization to nuclear polarization. These effects are quantitatively investigated.

Augerelectron emission from foil-excited Ne-ions (6 to 10 MeV beam energy) has been measured. The beam-foil time-of-flight technique has been applied to study electronic transitions of metastable states (delayed spectra) and to determine their lifetimes. To achieve a line identification for the complex structure observed in the prompt spectrum, the spectrum is separated into its isoelectronic parts by an Augerelectron-ion coincidence correlating the emitted electrons and the emitting projectiles of well defined final charge states q_f. Well resolved spectra were obtained and the lines could be identified using intermediate coupling Dirac-Fock multiconfiguration calculations. From the total KLL-Augerelectron transition probabilities observed in the electronion coincidence experiment for Ne (10 MeV) the amount of projectiles with one K-hole just behind a C-target can be estimated. For foil-excited Ne-projectiles in contrast to single collision results the comparison of transition intensities for individual lines with calculated transition probabilities yields a statistical population of Li- and Be-like configurations.

One-electron energy levels and wavelengths have been calculated for Na-like ions whose nuclei carry quarks with additional charges ±e/3, ±2e/3. The calculations are based on relativistic self-consistent field procedures. The deviations from experimental values exhibit regularities which allow an extrapolation for the wavelengths of 3s - 3p, 3s - 4p, 3p - 3d, and 3p - 4s transitions for the nuclear charge Z = 11± 1/3, ±2/3. A number of transitions are found in the region of visible light which could be used in an optical search for quark atoms.

The quasimolecular M radiation emitted in collisions between Xe ions of up to 6 MeV energy and solid targets of Ta, Au, Pb and Bi, as well as a gaseous target of Pb(CH_3)_4, has been studied. Using a realistic theoretical correlation diagram, a semiquantitative explanation of the observed peak structure is given.

The basic thermodynamic functions, the entropy, free energy, and enthalpy, for element 105 (hahnium) in electronic configurations d^3 s^2, d^3 sp, and d^4s^1 and for its +5 ionized state (5f^14) have been calculated as a function of temperature. The data are based on the results of the calculations of the corresponding electronic states of element 105 using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method.

Results of the Dirac-Slater discrete variational calculations for the group 4, 5, and 6 highest chlorides including elements 104, 105, and 106 have shown that the groups are not identical with respect to trends in the electronic structure and bonding. The charge density distribution data show that notwithstanding the basic increase in covalency within the groups this increase diminishes in going from group 4 to group 6. As a result, E106Cl_6 will be less stable toward thermal decomposition than WCl_6, which is confirmed by an estimated low E106-Cl bond energy. \delta H_form equal to -90.3 ± 6 kcal/rnol is obtained for E106Cl_6 in the gas phase, which is indicative of a very low stability of this compound. The stability of the maximum oxidation state is shown to decrease in the direction E104(+4) > E105(+5) > E106(+6).

Standard redox potentials E^0(M^z+x/M^z+) in acidic solutions for group 5 elements including element 105 (Ha) and the actinide, Pa, have been estimated on the basis of the ionization potentials calculated via the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. Stability of the pentavalent state was shown to increase along the group from V to Ha, while that of the tetra- and trivalent states decreases in this direction. Our estimates have shown no extra stability of the trivalent state of hahnium. Element 105 should form mixed-valence complexes by analogy with Nb due to the similar values of their potentials E^0(M^3+/M^2+). The stability of the maximumoxidation state of the elements decreases in the direction 103 > 104 > 105.

A set of parametrized equations has been published by Bratsch and Lagowski for calculating thermodynamic properties of the lanthanides, actinides, element 104, and certainrelated elements. Since these equations were applied to element 104, new values for the first four ionization energies and radii of the ions of charge +1, +2, +3, and +4 have been calculated for this element. The parametrized equations are used here with these new values to calculate some thermodynamic properties of element 104.

The chemical properties of element 111, eka-gold, are predicted through the use of the periodic table, relativistic Hartee-Fock-Slater calculations, and various qualitative theories which have established their usefulness in understanding and correlating properties of molecules. The results indicate that element 111 will be like Au(III) in its chemistry with little or no tendency to show stability in the I or II states. There is a possibility that the 111 - ion, analogous to the auride ion, will be stable.
