Ex-situ grown thin films of SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) were deposited on platinum substrates using laser ablation technique. A low substrate-temperature-processing route was chosen to avoid any diffusion of bismuth into the Pt electrode. It was observed that the as grown films showed an oriented growth along the 'c'-axis (with zero spontaneous polarization). The as grown films were subsequently annealed to enhance crystallization. Upon annealing, these films transformed into a polycrystalline structure, and exhibited excellent ferroelectric properties. The switching was made to be possible by lowering the thickness without losing the electrically insulating behavior of the films. The hysteresis results showed an excellent square-shaped loop with results (P-r = 4 muC/cm(2) E-c = 90 kV/cm) in good agreement with the earlier reports. The films also exhibited a dielectric constant of 190 and a dissipation factor of 0.02, which showed dispersion at low frequencies. The frequency dispersion was found to obey Jonscher's universal power law relation, and was attributed to the ionic charge hopping process according to earlier reports. The de transport studies indicated an ohmic behavior in the low voltage region, while higher voltages induced a bulk space charge and resulted in non-linear current-voltage dependence.

1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) measurements have been carried out with various sugars, viz. methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside (alpha-MeGluP), methyl beta-D-lucopyranoside (beta-MeGluP), methyl alpha--annopyranoside (alpha-MeManP), maltose (4-O-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl--glucose), nigerose (3-O-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucose), p-nitrophenyl alpha-maltoside (PNP-alpha-maltoside) and p-nitrophenyl beta-maltoside (PNP-beta-maltoside) to determine the distances of sugar protons from Mn2+ in concanavalin A (Con A). With a rotational correlation time of 1.58 x 10(-10) s determined, distances were calculated using Solomon-Bloembergen equation. The data obtained indicated differences in disposition of different groups in the binding site of Con A. An average value of about 10 A was obtained for the distances of sugar protons from Mn2+ in Con A. In the case of mono and disaccharides, the non-reducing end sugar unit was found to be closer to Mn2+ than the reducing end one.

Frequency response analysis is critical in understanding the steady and transient state behavior of any electrical network. Network analyzeror frequency response analyzer is used to determine the frequency response of an electrical network. This paper deals with the design of an inexpensive digitally controlled Network Analyzer. The frequency range of the network analyzer is from 10Hz to 50kHz (suitable range for system studies on most power electronics apparatus). It is composed of a microcontroller (as central processing unit) and a personal computer (as analyzer and display). The communication between the microcontroller and personal computer is established through one of the USB ports. The testing and evaluation of the analyzer is done with RC, RLC and multi-resonant circuits. The design steps, basis of analysis, experimental results, limitation in bandwidth and possible techniques for improvement in performances are presented.

It has been observed that a suspension of sodium fluoride in boiling acetonitrile could be used for the preparation of fluorine compounds such as silicon tetrafluoride [1], thiophosphoryl fluoride [2], sulphur tetrafluoride [3,4], and fluorocyclophosphazenes [5]. This method, when adopted for the fluorination of sulphuryl chloride [6], it is observed that a mixture of sulphuryl fluoride and sulphuryl chloro fluoride is obtained. On the other hand, when lead fluoride is substituted for sodium fluoride, pure sulphuryl chloro fluoride is evolved. Based on this observation, a new method has been standardised for the preparation of a pure sample of sulphuryl chlorofluoride by fluorinating sulphuryl chloride by lead fluoride in acetonitrile medium.

OBJECTIVES: Sexually transmitted infections' (STIs) rate vary in St. Petersburg, Estonia and Finland; the aim was to compare the determinants of self-reported sexually transmitted infections in these areas. METHODS: Data from four population-based questionnaire surveys were used (Finland in 1992 and 1999; St. Petersburg in 2003; Estonia in 2004). With the exception of the 1992 Finnish survey (interview) all were postal surveys, with 1,070 respondents in Finland (78 and 52% response rates), 1,147 (68%) in St. Petersburg, and 5,190 (54%) in Estonia. RESULTS: Risky sexual behaviours were equally common in the three areas and the determinants were the same. Women with an STIs history more often had had their first sexual intercourse when aged under 18, had not used condom during first intercourse, had a high number of lifetime or previous year sexual partners. However, marital status and education were not similar determinants. Cohabiting and well-educated women in Finland were more likely to have STIs while in other areas the associations found were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Risky behaviour predicts STIs, but does not explain the varying rates of STIs between areas.

Structure and superconducting properties of Tl1?yPbyY1?xCaxSr2Cu2O7 (y=0.0, 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5) , derived from the parent insulator TlYSr2Cu2O7, have been investigated for different values of x. XANES studies show Pb to be in the 4+ state while Tl is in the 3+ state, suggesting thereby that in this series, (x?y) approximately corresponds to the hole concentration. The in-plane Cu---O distance decreases with increase in x for all values of y. The apical Cu---O distance as well as the Tl(Pb)---O(2) distance show anomalies at x=0.5 in the series with y=0.25; at this composition, Tc also reaches a maximum. In general, the composition (value of x) at which the Tc of Tl1?yPbyY1?xCaxSr2Cu2O7 reaches a maximum depends on the Pb content and the maximum Tc itself increases with increase in y, reaching a value of 105 K at y=0.5. More interestingly, a maximum Tc occurs at an (x?y) value of not, vert, similar0.25, which is close to the hole concentration at maximum Tc in other cuprate superconductors containing two CuO2 layers.

The chemical potentials of SrO in two-phase fields (TiO2 + SrTiO3) (SrTiO3 + Sr4Ti3O10) (Sr4Ti3O10 + Sr3Ti2O7) and (Sr3Ti2O7 + Sr2TiO4) of the pseudo-binary system (SrO + TiO2) have been measured in the temperature range (900 to 1250) K relative to pure SrO as the reference state using solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal SrF2 as the electrolyte The cells were operated under pure oxygen at ambient pressure The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of strontium titanates SrTiO3 Sr4Ti3O10 Sr3Ti2O7 and Sr2TiO4 from their component binary oxides were derived from the reversible electromotive force (EMF) of the cells For the formation of the four compounds from their component oxides TiO2 with rutile structure and SrO the standard Gibbs free energy changes are given by Delta G((ox))(SrTiO3) +/- 89/(J mol(-1)) = -121878 + 3 881(T/K) Delta G((ox))(Sr4Ti3O10) +/- 284/(J mol(-1)) = -409197 + 14 749(T/K) Delta G((ox))(Sr3Ti2O7) +/- 190/(J mol(-1)) = -285827 + 10 022(T/K) Delta G((ox))(Sr2TiO4) +/- 110/(J mol(-1))= -159385 + 3 770(T/K) The reference state for solid TiO2 is the rutile form The results of this study are in good agreement with Gibbs free energy of formation data reported in the literature for SrTiO3 but differ significantly with data for Sr4Ti3O10 For Si3Ti2O7 and Si2TiO4 experimental measurements are not available in the literature for direct comparison with the results obtained in this study (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

We report a single C-13 spin edited selective proton-proton correlation experiment to decipher overcrowded 13C coupled proton NMR spectra of weakly dipolar coupled spin systems. The experiment unravels the masked C-13 satellites in proton spectrum and permits the measurement of one bond carbon-proton residual dipolar couplings in I3S and for each diastereotopic proton in I2S groups. It also provides all the possible homonuclear proton-proton residual couplings which are otherwise difficult to extract from the broad and featureless one dimensional H-1 spectrum, in addition to enantiodifferentiation in a chiral molecule. Employment of heteronuclear (C-13) decoupling in the evolution period results in complete demixing of overlapped signals from enantiomers. The observed anomalous intensity pattern in strongly dipolar coupled methyl protons in methyl selective correlation experiment has been interpreted using polarization operator formalism. Oxygen is shown to adsorb molecularly on a clean Cu(110) surface at 80 K and dissociate around 150 K forming atomic oxygen. Adsorption of oxygen on an HCl covered surface at low temperatures results in the formation of adsorbed hydroxyl groups and water in addition to adsorbed molecular oxygen. The molecular oxygen species is stable up to 190 K on the HCl covered surface.

Ten different tRNAGly1 genes from the silk worm, Bombyx mori, have been cloned and characterized. These genes were transcribed in vitro in homologous nuclear extracts from the posterior silk gland (PSG) or nuclear extracts derived from the middle silk gland or ovarian tissues. Although the transcription levels were much higher in the PSG nuclear extracts, the transcriptional efficiency of the individual genes followed a similar pattern in all the extracts. Based on the levels of in vitro transcription, the ten tRNAGly1 genes could be divided into three groups, viz., those which were transcribed at very high levels (e.g., clone pR8), high to medium levels (e.g., pBmil, pBmpl, pBmhl, pBmtl) and low to barely detectable levels (e.g., pBmsl, pBmjl and pBmkl). The coding sequences of all these tRNA genes being identical, the differential transcription suggested that the flanking sequences modulate their transcriptional efficiency. The presence of positive and negative regulatory elements in the 5' flanking regions of these genes was confirmed by transcription competition experiments. A positive element was present in the immediate upstream A + T-rich sequences in all the genes, but no consensus sequences correlating to the transcriptional status could be generated. The presence of negative elements on the other hand was indicated only in some of the genes and therefore may have a role in the differential transcription of these tRNAGly genes in vivo.

Electrolytes based on polyethylene glycol (PEG, mol.wt.8000) and LiCl of compositions, (PEG)(x)LiCl, x=4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 40, 60, where x is the O/Li ratio, were prepared by solution casting from methanol solutions. FTIR studies indicate that the ether oxygens of the polymer chain participate in Li+ ion conduction. The presence of a salt-polymer complex that melts around 190 degrees C was evidenced by DSC measurements for the electrolytes with compositions x<12. The highest conductivity was obtained at the composition x=10 which was attributed to the presence of a mostly amorphous compound. NMR measurements indicated two regions of motional narrowing, one attributable to the glass transition and another to translational diffusion.

We have studied electronic states of various fragments of C-60 within the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and have obtained structural, magnetic and spectral properties of these molecules. The fragments studied include corannulene, fluoranthene and pyracylene. Pyracylene is studied using the exact valence bond (VB) approach while fluoranthene and corannulene are studied using a novel restricted CI technique which employs molecular orbitals for constructing the VB functions. The electronic excitations, bond order and ring currents are calculated for these systems. From these studies, the wide range of absorptions in C-60 can be viewed as those localized on pyracylene units or on the corannulene/fluoranthene units. The bond orders and ring currents show the hexagons to be similar to benzene rings. The pentagon-hexagon bonds are also found to be longer than the hexagon-hexagon bonds.
