Information is encoded in neural circuits using both graded and action potentials, converting between them within single neurons and successive processing layers. This conversion is accompanied by information loss and a drop in energy efficiency. We investigate the biophysical causes of this loss of information and efficiency by comparing spiking neuron models, containing stochastic voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels, with generator potential and graded potential models lacking voltage-gated Na+ channels. We identify three causes of information loss in the generator potential that are the by-product of action potential generation: (1) the voltage-gated Na+ channels necessary for action potential generation increase intrinsic noise and (2) introduce non-linearities, and (3) the finite duration of the action potential creates a `footprint' in the generator potential that obscures incoming signals. These three processes reduce information rates by similar to 50% in generator potentials, to similar to 3 times that of spike trains. Both generator potentials and graded potentials consume almost an order of magnitude less energy per second than spike trains. Because of the lower information rates of generator potentials they are substantially less energy efficient than graded potentials. However, both are an order of magnitude more efficient than spike trains due to the higher energy costs and low information content of spikes, emphasizing that there is a two-fold cost of converting analogue to digital; information loss and cost inflation.

Programming for parallel architectures that do not have a shared address space is extremely difficult due to the need for explicit communication between memories of different compute devices. A heterogeneous system with CPUs and multiple GPUs, or a distributed-memory cluster are examples of such systems. Past works that try to automate data movement for distributed-memory architectures can lead to excessive redundant communication. In this paper, we propose an automatic data movement scheme that minimizes the volume of communication between compute devices in heterogeneous and distributed-memory systems. We show that by partitioning data dependences in a particular non-trivial way, one can generate data movement code that results in the minimum volume for a vast majority of cases. The techniques are applicable to any sequence of affine loop nests and works on top of any choice of loop transformations, parallelization, and computation placement. The data movement code generated minimizes the volume of communication for a particular configuration of these. We use a combination of powerful static analyses relying on the polyhedral compiler framework and lightweight runtime routines they generate, to build a source-to-source transformation tool that automatically generates communication code. We demonstrate that the tool is scalable and leads to substantial gains in efficiency. On a heterogeneous system, the communication volume is reduced by a factor of 11X to 83X over state-of-the-art, translating into a mean execution time speedup of 1.53X. On a distributed-memory cluster, our scheme reduces the communication volume by a factor of 1.4X to 63.5X over state-of-the-art, resulting in a mean speedup of 1.55X. In addition, our scheme yields a mean speedup of 2.19X over hand-optimized UPC codes.

Earth abundant alternative chalcopyrite Cu2CoSnS4 (CCTS) thin films were deposited by a facile sol-gel process onto larger substrates. Temperature dependence of the process control of deposition and desired phase formations was studied in detail. Films were analyzed for complete transformation from amorphous to polycrystalline, with textured structures for stannite phase, as reflected from the X-ray diffraction and with nearly stoichiometric compositions of Cu:Co:Sn:S = 2:0:1:0:1:0:4:0 from EDAX analysis. Morphological investigations revealed that the CCTS films with larger grains, on the order of its thickness, were synthesized at higher temperature of 500 degrees C. The optimal band gap for application in photovoltaics was estimated to be 1.4 eV. Devices with SLG/CCTS/Al geometry were fabricated for real time demonstration of photoconductivity under A.M 1.5 G solar and 1064 rim infrared laser illuminations. A photodetector showed one order current amplification from similar to 1.9 X 10(-6) A in the dark to 2.2 x 10(-5) A and 9.8 X 10(-6) A under A.M 1.5 G illumination and 50 mW cm(-2) IR laser, respectively. Detector sensitivity, responsivity, external quantum efficiency, and gain were estimated as 4.2, 0.12 A/W, 14.74% and 14.77%, respectively, at 50 mW cm(-2) laser illuminations. An ON and OFF ratio of 2.5 proved that CCTS can be considered as a potential absorber in low cost photovoltaics applications.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive type of brain tumor and shows very poor prognosis. Here, using genome-wide methylation analysis, we show that G-CIMP+ and G-CIMP-subtypes enrich distinct classes of biological processes. One of the hypermethylated genes in GBM, ULK2, an upstream autophagy inducer, was found to be down-regulated in GBM. Promoter hypermethylation of ULK2 was confirmed by bisulfite sequencing. GBM and glioma cell lines had low levels of ULK2 transcripts, which could be reversed upon methylation inhibitor treatment. ULK2 promoter methylation and transcript levels showed significant negative correlation. Ectopic overexpression of ULK2-induced autophagy, which further enhanced upon nutrient starvation or temozolomide chemotherapy. ULK2 also inhibited the growth of glioma cells, which required autophagy induction as kinase mutant of ULK2 failed to induce autophagy and inhibit growth. Furthermore, ULK2 induced autophagy and inhibited growth in Ras-transformed immortalized Baby Mouse Kidney (iBMK) ATG5(+/+) but not in autophagy-deficient ATG5(-/-) cells. Growth inhibition due to ULK2 induced high levels of autophagy under starvation or chemotherapy utilized apoptotic cell death but not at low levels of autophagy. Growth inhibition by ULK2 also appears to involve catalase degradation and reactive oxygen species generation. ULK2 overexpression inhibited anchorage independent growth, inhibited astrocyte transformation in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. Of all autophagy genes, we found ULK2 and its homologue ULK1 were only down-regulated in all grades of glioma. Thus these results altogether suggest that inhibition of autophagy by ULK1/2 down-regulation is essential for glioma development.

Single fluid schemes that rely on an interface function for phase identification in multicomponent compressible flows are widely used to study hydrodynamic flow phenomena in several diverse applications. Simulations based on standard numerical implementation of these schemes suffer from an artificial increase in the width of the interface function owing to the numerical dissipation introduced by an upwind discretization of the governing equations. In addition, monotonicity requirements which ensure that the sharp interface function remains bounded at all times necessitate use of low-order accurate discretization strategies. This results in a significant reduction in accuracy along with a loss of intricate flow features. In this paper we develop a nonlinear transformation based interface capturing method which achieves superior accuracy without compromising the simplicity, computational efficiency and robustness of the original flow solver. A nonlinear map from the signed distance function to the sigmoid type interface function is used to effectively couple a standard single fluid shock and interface capturing scheme with a high-order accurate constrained level set reinitialization method in a way that allows for oscillation-free transport of the sharp material interface. Imposition of a maximum principle, which ensures that the multidimensional preconditioned interface capturing method does not produce new maxima or minima even in the extreme events of interface merger or breakup, allows for an explicit determination of the interface thickness in terms of the grid spacing. A narrow band method is formulated in order to localize computations pertinent to the preconditioned interface capturing method. Numerical tests in one dimension reveal a significant improvement in accuracy and convergence; in stark contrast to the conventional scheme, the proposed method retains its accuracy and convergence characteristics in a shifted reference frame. Results from the test cases in two dimensions show that the nonlinear transformation based interface capturing method outperforms both the conventional method and an interface capturing method without nonlinear transformation in resolving intricate flow features such as sheet jetting in the shock-induced cavity collapse. The ability of the proposed method in accounting for the gravitational and surface tension forces besides compressibility is demonstrated through a model fully three-dimensional problem concerning droplet splash and formation of a crownlike feature. The temperature of allotropic phase transformation in ZnS (cubic to wurtzite) changes with pressure and particle size. In this paper we have explored the interrelation among these through a detailed study of ZnS powders obtained by a temperature-controlled high energy milling process. By employing the combined effect of temperature and pressure in an indigenously built cryomill, we have demonstrated a large-scale, low-temperature synthesis of wurtzite ZnS nanoparticles. The synthesized products have been characterized for their phase and microstructure by the use of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic techniques. Further, it has been demonstrated that the synthesized materials exhibit photoluminescence emissions in the UV-visible region with an unusual doublet pattern due to the presence of both cubic and hexagonal wurtzite domains in the same particles. By further fine-tuning the processing conditions, it may be possible to achieve controlled defect related photoluminescence emissions from the ZnS nanoparticles.

The effect of hydrogen (H) charging on the shear yield strength (tau(max)) and shear transformation zone volume (Omega) of Ni-Nb-Zr metallic glass ribbons, with varying Zr content, were studied through the first pop-in loads during nanoindentation. Weight gain measurements after H charging and desorption studies were utilized to identify how the total H absorbed during charging is partitioned into mobile and immobile (or trapped) parts. These, in turn, indicate the significant role of H mobility in the amorphous structure on the yielding behavior. In high-Zr alloys, tau(max) increases significantly whereas Omega decreases. In low-Zr alloys, a slight decrease in tau(max) and increase in Omega were noted. These experimental observations are rationalized in terms of the mobility of the absorbed H in the amorphous structure and the possible role of it in the shear transformation zone dynamics during deformation of the metallic glass. We report the preparation, analysis, and phase transformation behavior of polymorphs and the hydrate of 4-amino-3,5-dinitrobenzamide. The compound crystallizes in four different polymorphic forms, Form I (monoclinic, P2(1)/n), Form II (orthorhombic, Pbca), Form III (monoclinic, P2(1)/c), and Form IV (monoclinic, P2(1)/c). Interestingly, a hydrate (triclinic, P (1) over bar) of the compound is also discovered during the systematic identification of the polymorphs. Analysis of the polymorphs has been investigated using hot stage microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, in situ variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. On heating, all of the solid forms convert into Form I irreversibly, and on further heating, melting is observed. In situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that Form II transforms to Form I above 175 degrees C via single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. The hydrate, on heating, undergoes a double phase transition, first to Form III upon losing water in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion and then to a more stable polymorph Form I on further heating. Thermal analysis leads to the conclusion that Form II appears to be the most stable phase at ambient conditions, whereas Form I is more stable at higher temperature.

Polyhedral techniques for program transformation are now used in several proprietary and open source compilers. However, most of the research on polyhedral compilation has focused on imperative languages such as C, where the computation is specified in terms of statements with zero or more nested loops and other control structures around them. Graphical dataflow languages, where there is no notion of statements or a schedule specifying their relative execution order, have so far not been studied using a powerful transformation or optimization approach. The execution semantics and referential transparency of dataflow languages impose a different set of challenges. In this paper, we attempt to bridge this gap by presenting techniques that can be used to extract polyhedral representation from dataflow programs and to synthesize them from their equivalent polyhedral representation. We then describe PolyGLoT, a framework for automatic transformation of dataflow programs which we built using our techniques and other popular research tools such as Clan and Pluto. For the purpose of experimental evaluation, we used our tools to compile LabVIEW, one of the most widely used dataflow programming languages. Results show that dataflow programs transformed using our framework are able to outperform those compiled otherwise by up to a factor of seventeen, with a mean speed-up of 2.30x while running on an 8-core Intel system.

In programmed -1 ribosomal frameshift, an RNA pseudoknot stalls the ribosome at specific sequence and restarts translation in a new reading frame. A precise understanding of structural characteristics of these pseudoknots and their PRF inducing ability has not been clear to date. To investigate this phenomenon, we have studied various structural aspects of a -1 PRF inducing RNA pseudoknot from BWYV using extensive molecular dynamics simulations. A set of functional and poorly functional forms, for which previous mutational data were available, were chosen for analysis. These structures differ from each other by either single base substitutions or base-pair replacements from the native structure. We have rationalized how certain mutations in RNA pseudoknot affect its function; e.g., a specific base substitution in loop 2 stabilizes the junction geometry by forming multiple noncanonical hydrogen bonds, leading to a highly rigid structure that could effectively resist ribosome-induced unfolding, thereby increasing efficiency. While, a CG to AU pair substitution in stem 1 leads to loss of noncanonical hydrogen bonds between stems and loop, resulting in a less stable structure and reduced PRF inducing ability, inversion of a pair in stem 2 alters specific base-pair geometry that might be required in ribosomal recognition of nucleobase groups, negatively affecting pseudoknot functioning. These observations illustrate that the ability of an RNA pseudoknot to induce -1 PRF with an optimal rate depends on several independent factors that contribute to either the local conformational variability or geometry

Gasification is an energy transformation process in which solid fuel undergoes thermochemical conversion to produce gaseous fuel, and the two most important criteria involved in such process to evaluate the performance, economics and sustainability of the technology are: the total available energy (exergy) and the energy conserved (energy efficiency). Current study focuses on the energy and exergy analysis of the oxy-steam gasification and comparing with air gasification to optimize the H-2 yield, efficiency and syngas energy density. Casuarina wood is used as a fuel, and mixture of oxygen and steam in different proportion and amount is used as a gasifying media. The results are analysed with respect to varying equivalence ratio and steam to biomass ratio (SBR). Elemental mass balance technique is employed to ensure the validity of results. First and second law thermodynamic analysis is used towards time evaluation of energy and exergy analysis. Different component of energy input and output has been studied carefully to understand the influence of varying SBR on the availability of energy and irreversibility in the system to minimize the losses with change in input parameters for optimum performance. The energy and exergy losses (irreversibility) for oxy-steam gasification system are compared with the results of air gasification, and losses are found to be lower in oxy-steam thermal conversion; which has been argued and reasoned due to the presence of N-2 in the air-gasification. The maximum exergy efficiency of 85% with energy efficiency of 82% is achieved at SBR of 0.75 on the molar basis. It has been observed that increase in SBR results in lower exergy and energy efficiency, and it is argued to be due to the high energy input in steam generation and subsequent losses in the form of physical exergy of steam in the product gas, which alone accounts for over 18% in exergy input and 8.5% in exergy of product gas at SBR of 2.7. Carbon boundary point (CBP), is identified at the SBR of 1.5, and water gas shift (WGS) reaction plays a crucial role in H-2 enrichment after carbon boundary point (CBP) is reached. Effects of SBR and CBP on the H-2/CO ratio is analysed and discussed from the perspective of energy as well as the reaction chemistry. Energy density of syngas and energy efficiency is favoured at lower SBR but higher SBR favours H-2 rich gas at the expense of efficiency. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Doubly (Sn + F) doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Sn:F) thin films were deposited onto glass substrates using a simplified spray pyrolysis technique. The deposited films were annealed at 400 degrees C under two different ambiences (air and vacuum) for 2 h. The photocatalytic activity of these films was assessed through photocatalytic decolorization kinetics of Methylene Blue (MB) dye and the decolorization efficiency of the annealed films was compared with that of their as-deposited counterpart. The photocatalytic studies reveal that the ZnO:Sn:F films annealed under vacuum environment exhibits better photocatalytic efficiency when compared with both air annealed and as-deposited films. The SEM and TEM images depict that the surface of each of the films has an overlayer comprising of nanobars formed on a bottom layer, having spherical grains. The studies show that the diameter of the nanobars plays crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO:Sn:F films. The structural, optical and electrical studies substantiate the discussions on the photocatalytic ability of the deposited films. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The current study involves synthesis of a series of Tb3+ doped ZrO2 nanophosphors by solution combustion method using oxalyl dihydrazide as fuel. The as-formed ZrO2:Tb3+ nanophosphors having different concentrations of Tb3+ (1-11 mol%) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Visible spectroscopic techniques and the materials were subjected to photoluminescence and photocatalytic dye decolorization studies. The PXRD analysis indicates the formation of tetragonal symmetry up to 5 mol% concentration of Tb3+. Further increase in Tb3+ concentration has lead to cubic phase formation and the same was confirmed by Rietveld refinement analysis. SEM images revealed that material was highly porous in nature comprising of large voids and cracks with irregular morphology. TEM and SAED images clearly confirm the formation of high quality tetragonal nanocrystals. The emissive properties of nanophosphors were found to be dependent on Tb3+ dopant concentration. The green emission of the material was turned to white emission with the increase of Tb3+ ion concentration. The photocatalytic activities of these nanophosphors were probed for the decolorization of Congo red under UV and Sunlight irradiation. All the photocatalysts showed enhanced activity under UV light compared to Sunlight. The photocatalyst with 7 mol% Tb3+ showed enhanced activity attributed to effective separation of charge carriers due to phase transformation from tetragonal to cubic. The influence of crystallite size and PL on charge carrier trapping-recombination dynamics was investigated. The study successfully demonstrates synthesis of tetragonal and cubic ZrO2:Tb3+ green nanophosphors with superior photoluminescence and photocatalytic activities. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The nature of the stress and electric field driven structural and microstructural transformations in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) compositions of the high Curie point piezoelectric system BiScO3-PbTiO3 has been examined by ex situ based techniques. Using a powder poling technique, which is based on the concept of exploiting the irreversible structural change that occurs after the application of a strong electric field and stress independently, it was possible to ascertain that both moderate stress and electric field induce identical structural transformation-a fraction of the monoclinic phase transforms irreversibly to the tetragonal phase. Moreover, analysis of the dielectric response before and after poling revealed a counterintuitive phenomenon of poling induced decrease in the spatial coherence of polarization for compositions around the MPB and not so for compositions far away from the MPB range. Exploiting the greater sensitivity of this technique, we demonstrate that the criticality associated with the interferroelectric transition spans a wider composition range than what is conventionally reported in the literature based on bulk x-ray/neutron powder diffraction techniques.

Inhibition of electron-hole pair recombination is the most desirable solution for stimulating photocatalytic activity in semiconductor nanostructures. To implement this, herein we study the photocatalytic efficiency of elemental Au, Pd and bimetallic AuPd nanoalloy decorated pristine and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hybridized ZnO nanorods for degrading rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye. Fabrication of Au, Pd and AuPd nanoalloy on pristine and RGO modified ZnO nanorods is simple and more importantly surfactant or polymer free. AuPd nanoalloyed ZnO-RGO nanocomposites exhibit higher photocatalytic activity for degrading dye than both Au and Pd hybridized ones, indicating the promising potential of bimetallic nanoalloys over elemental components. A non-monotonic dependence on the composite composition was found by analyzing photodegradation efficiency of a series of ZnO-RGO-AuPd hybrid nanostructures with different weight percentages of RGO. The hybrid nanostructure ZnO-RGO (5 wt%)-AuPd (1 wt%) exhibits highest photodegradation efficiency (similar to 100% degradation in 20 min) with an improvement in rate constant (k) by a factor of 10 compared to that of the ZnO-RGO nanocomposite. The enhancement of the photocatalytic activity is attributed to the better separation of photogenerated charge carriers in photocatalysts thereby suggesting possible usefulness in a broad range of applications, such as sensing, photocatalysis and solar energy conversion.
