The surface pressure-molecular area (pi-A) isotherms for Langmuir monolayers of four perylenetetracarboxylic (PTCD) derivatives, measured with varying subphase temperatures and compression speeds, are reported. The behavior of these PTCD derivatives at the water-air interface is modeled using the rigid docking method. This approach is the first attempt to model the molecular orientation of PTCD on the water surface to be compared with experimental Langmuir isotherms. Through this methodology, it would be possible to anticipate aggregation and determine if favorable spatial orientations of perylenes are generated on the water surface. The pi-A isotherm experiments show that these molecules can support high surface pressures, indicating strong packing on the water surface and that the isotherms are compression speed independent but temperature dependent. The molecular orientation and stacking was further examined in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers deposited onto glass and glass coated with Ag island films using UV-visible absorption and surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) measurements.

Thin films of perovskite-type materials such as PbTiO3, BaTiO3, (Pb,La)TiO3, (Pb, La)(ZrTi)O-3, KNbO3, and Pb(Mg,Nb)03 have been attracting great interest for applications like non-volatile memories, ultrasonic sensors and optical devices. Thin film should be epitaxially grown or at least highly textured since the properties of this anisotropic material depend on the crystallographic orientation. For optical devices, in particular, an epitaxial thin film without defects are essential to reduce optical propagation losses. Pb1-xLaxTiO3 (PLT) where x=0, 13 and 27% thin films were prepared by a chemical method (polymeric precursors method), and deposited by the spin coating technique onto substrates of SrTiO3 (STO) and LaAlO3 (LAO). The films were then beat treated at 500 degrees C in a controlled atmosphere of 0,. The orientation degree of the thin films was obtained from rocking curve technique, by means of X-ray difftaction analysis. A microstructural study revealed that the films were crack-free, homogeneous and have low roughness. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new species of Ophiomisidium is described and regards about reproduction are presented. It is the first species in the genus to posses, apparently,. a brooding development. Very few specimens of species of Ophiomisidium have previously been collected, but over 3000 specimens of the new species were collected on the continental shelf and slope (60-810 m depth) off southern Brazil. They were obtained during the REVIZEE Programme, the first extensive surveys to examine Brazilian ophiuroids from depths greater than 200 m.

Image orientation is a basic problem in Digital Photogrammetry. While interior and relative orientations were succesfully automated, the same can not be said about absolute orientation. This process can be automated by using an approach based on relational matching and a heuristic that uses the analytical relation between straight features in the object space and its homologous in the image space. A build-in self-diagnosis is also used in this method, that is based on the implementation of data snooping statistic test in the process of spatial resection, using the Iterated Extended Kalman Filtering (IEKF). The aim of this paper is to present the basic principles of the proposed approach and results based on real data.

The paper evaluates the applicability of products of remote sensing in studies related to the structural conditionings of slope stability in saprolites, usually conducted through field surveys. In this article we use a regional approach concentrating on an area of lane duplication of a major highway. In that area, resistance reduction to stress and the low cohesions of muscovite saprolites - schists and gneiss which are associated to geological discontinuities, all result in inumerous instabilities. The joints and foliations were extracted from satellite images as well as aerial photographs. Following that, the study area was divided into various sectors based on the directions and dips of the foliation. Different relationships between the structures and the slopes were analyzed in order to indicate the most feasible type of slope failure in each sector of analysis. The aim of the study is to subsidize further detailed future research.

The slope of the distance-time relationship from maximal 200 and 400 in bouts (S(200-400)) has been increasingly employed for setting training intensities in swimming. However, physiological and mechanical responses at this speed are poorly understood. Thus, this study investigated blood lactate, heart rate (HR), stroke rate (SR), stroke length (SL) and RPE responses to an interval swimming set at S(200-400) in trained swimmers. In a 50-m pool, twelve athletes (16.5 +/- 1.2 yr, 176 +/- 7 cm, 68.4 +/- 5.4 kg, and 7.8 +/- 2.5% body fat) performed maximal 200 and 400 m crawl trials for S(200-400) determination (1.28 +/- 0.05 m/s). Thereafter, swimmers were instructed to perform 5 x 400 in at this speed with 1.5 min rest between repetitions. Three athletes Could not complete the set (exhaustion at 21.0 +/- 3.1 min). For the remaining swimmers (total set duration = 32.0 +/- 1.3 min) significant increases) (p < 0.05) in blood lactate (5.7 +/- 0.8-7.9 +/- 2.4 mmol/l), SR (29.6 +/- 3.2-32.1 +/- 4.1 cycles/min), HR (169 +/- 11-181 +/- 8 bpm) and RPE (13.3 +/- 1.6-16.3 +/- 2.6) were observed through the IS. Conversely, SL decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from the first to the fifth repetition (2.48 +/- 0.22-2.31 +/- 0.24 m/cycle). These results suggest that interval swimming at S(200-400) represents an intense physiological, mechanical and perceptual stimulus that can be sustained for a prolonged period by most athletes. Objectives. This paper attempts to provide critical perspectives on common in vitro research methodologies, including shear bond testing, wear testing, and load-to-failure tests. Origins of interest in high-quality laboratory data is reviewed, in vitro data is categorized into property and simulation protocols, and two approaches are suggested for establishing clinical validity. It is hoped that these insights will encourage further progress toward development of in vitro tests that are validated against clinical performance and/or by producing clinically validated failure or damage mechanisms.Materials and methods. Published shear and tensile bond data (macro and micro) is examined in light of published finite element analyses (FEA). This data is subjected to a Weibull scaling analysis to ascertain whether scaling is consistent with failure from the bonded interface or not. Wear tests results are presented in light of the damage mechanism(s) operating. Quantitative wear data is re-examined as being dependent upon contact pressure. Load-to-failure test results are re-analyzed by calculating contact stresses at failure for 119 tests from 54 publications over more than 25 years.Results. FEA analyses and reported failure modes (adhesive, mixed, cohesive) are consistent with failure not involving interfacial "shear stresses" as calculated in published work. Weibull scaling clearly suggests failure involving external surfaces of specimens, not interfacial origins. Contact stresses (pressures) are clearly an important variable in wear testing and are not well-controlled in published work. Load-to-failure tests create damage not seen clinically due to excessively high contact stresses. Most contact stresses in the 119 tests examined were calculated to be between 1000 MPa and 5000 MPa, whereas clinical contact stresses at wear facets have been measured not to exceed 40 MPa.Conclusions. Our community can do a much better job of designing in vitro tests that more closely simulate clinical conditions, especially when contact is involved. Journals are encouraged to thoughtfully consider a ban on publishing papers using bond tests and load-to-failure methods that are seriously flawed and have no clinical relevance.
