While it may be argued that aggression against women is part of a culture of violence deeply rooted in Spanish society, the gender-related violence that exists in today’s Spain is more specifically a legacy of Franco’s dictatorship (1939-1975). Franco’s Spain endorsed unequal gender relations, championed patriarchal dominance and power over women, and imposed models of hegemonic and authoritarian masculinities that internalized violence by rendering it a feature inseparable from manhood and virility. ^ This dissertation provides a comprehensive analysis of masculinity and gender violence in Franco’s Spain, by analyzing the novel as the primary cultural vehicle of social criticism and political dissent against the new regime during a period (1939-1962) dominated by silence and censorship. The first part of this work defines and elucidates the concepts of masculinity and gender violence and the relationship between them. It also compares the significant social and cultural achievements of Spanish women during the Second Republic (1931-1939) with the reactionary curbing of those achievements during Francoism. The second part of this research presents a multidisciplinary analysis of masculinity and gender violence in three novels: Nada (1944) by Carmen Laforet, Juegos de manos (1954) by Juan Goytisolo and Tiempo de silencio (1962) by Luis Martin Santos. ^ Through the literary representation of different models of masculinity and the psychological and social parameters that encourage and incite gender violence, these authors conceptualize and express their political ideology, as well as their symbolic interpretation of Francoist Spain.^

Although he did not write copious novels, endless essays, or long poems, Jorge Luis Borges is considered one of today's best modem writers. His works have never been more than ten pages long. The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that the willing use of concise expression in Borges's writings is inscribed in a poetic worldview of great implications. This view is based on the synthesis of philosophical, literary, and cultural issues that Borges interprets, discusses, refutes, and re-elaborates with a new conjectural approach. This dissertation is based on a methodological review of all his current scholarly work and on a thorough examination of the four volumes of his Complete Works, edited by Emece, in 2002. His pantheistic vision, the epiphanic moments, and his love/hate relationship with language, conform an aesthetic of resounding silence that enlightens the hidden aspects of his brief masterpieces. Even though Borgesian studies flood the library he once imagined, they have been presented in an isolated manner. This dissertation establishes a link among the various aforementioned aspects as studied by Borges scholars, and demonstrates the powerful influence of Borges's illuminating and precise vision. Paradoxically, the poetry of brevity in Borges's works is filled with allusions to the things that Borges silences, because, from a panoramic pantheism, his words almost reach an epiphanic enlightenment that flashes between preterit and future nothingness. By replacing extension with intensity, and mastering the art of omission, Borges's laborious work reaches power and concentration that only the very greatest talents can achieve. His delicate verbal conciseness provides his readers with a virtually infinite freedom of imagination because it exposes them to the chaotic world of mythical probabilities, where an instant encompasses etemity.

Throughout our history as an actor, director and teacher, we appreciate comedic performances they proposed a dialogue with the public through the body language of the performers whose performances abdicate the use of speech of the actors. This way of representing, in the silence of the stage, caught our attention and sparked our curiosity about the subject, which is directly related to the poetic constructions of the body on the scene. Before initial readings on the subject, we begin to understand that for a long time in human history, especially in the West, understanding body was constructed from various epistemological looks disregarded the body as a unit, an incarnation of the subject in all . This kind of thinking, reflecting the philosophy of modernity, reverberated strongly about the aesthetic issues of art making, here specifically in Theatre. For several centuries the theatrical make up molded from various aesthetic elements, but ignoring the potential of embodiment of the artist, ie the theatrical text, for example, was considered for a long time, as the main element of the scene and gave little emphasis on dramaturgy elaborate body. With the emergence of reflections on the subject, brought especially from the early twentieth century, the perception of the body as a creative element and creator, also began to gain ground. Over time artistic practices began to glimpse the creative possibilities of the body, including rethinking its relationship with the text written with the spoken word. And as part of these new reflections on the body in the creation process, we proposed this research, we have entitled "A poetics of non-verbal body: a look at the comic on the scene." In our research on this subject, also seek to understand how the corporeality of the actor may give us clues to realize / build nonverbal body and comical scene. From this perspective we can analyze how could the construction of a comical and non-verbal dramaturgy from the phenomenology of laughter. And with that look, we want to point out some aspects and procedures, arising from reflections on corporeality and comedy, that constitute, among other possible, non-verbal construction methodology scenic.

This work consists of a discussion, analysis and reading of Borges’stories, in that the problem of interest pronounces to the language, to the speech and the deed, sending them so much to the Literature with relationship to the Philosophy, so much to the statute of the ficcional, with relationship to the of the ontologic. In that optics, it intends to show the Borges deed as warp of the death, of the allegorical and of the metaphorical, in the sense of bringing for the ficcional lines different from the Real, elaborating the speech for besides the statement, reaching the interstic, the silence, the interruptions and the suspension of the representation. In that discursive elaboration, a crossing is pointed in the letter, affected for unspeakable sensations, crossing the processes of memory, imaginary and real, in which the time counting makes to emerge the difference and the repetition. In these if constituting territorial negotioting that they lead the characters to imaginary spaces as possibilities of the real, allowing them executes mobility for desterritory it self and reterritory itself, according to the change forces that show in your threshing. This work aims to understand how the public school system has become a failing institution with regards to sexual and gender diversity. I start from the principle that the school system performs a social sorting operation, leaving out of its halls almost all people who don‘t fit into the established heteronormative social order. First, I explore the experiences of primary school (Educação do Ensino Fundamental) professionals from the public network (Rede Pública Municipal) of the city of Natal-RN. I consider their narratives a result of daily practices which denounce the rules that govern and produce them in a broader context. Then I aim to establish a dialogue with the students who are victims of name-calling, teasing and abuse for not aligning with the ―normal‖ gender standards. At this stage of the research, I conducted fieldwork at the State Secondary School of Rio Grande do Norte (Escola Estadual de Ensino Médio). This investigation is guided by the following questions: What challenges need to be addressed in order to recognize the students who have been excluded from the school environment on account of sexual and/or gender differences; additionally, how can their classroom attendance and positive learning experience be ensured? To what degree is the school community concerned with building education practices which value and acknowledge sexual and gender diversity? The research goals were: to analyze how the school and its professionals deal with sexual and gender diversity, investigating which pedagogical practices silence, freeze and obstruct the diversity of student identities; examine how the school and its subjects work toward building new pathways for learning, for coexistence, and for facing the challenges of ―new‖ social demands such as homoaffection; observe the spaces that are cracked open by the presence and the voices of students who demand recognition of their existence.

This work aimed at analyzing the speeches constructed about motivation by English teachers who teach at public state schools in the interior of Minas Gerais. We aimed at delineating the concept of subject underlying the subjects’ notion of motivation and identifying the role that the English teacher attributes to himself and to the student when he/she enunciates on motivational issues, problematizing the possible consequences of these issues for some English teachers while working in public schools. In order to do so, our investigation made use of theoretical assumptions from Applied Linguistics and Discourse Analysis. The theoretical fundamentation deriving from Bakhtin Circle as well as from Michel Pecheux’s theoretical basis were also very relevant for this research. The intersection of these studying fields entails a theoretical construction that considers the voices of those who live the social practice (MOITA LOPES, 2006), which allows one to see the subjects through their heterogeneity, fluidity and fragmentation. Moreover, it generates knowledge about language in its political, ideological, social and historical aspects. AREDA (SERRANI, 1998) was used as a theoretical and methodological framework for data collection. In our analysis, we considered the voices and the conditions of production that constitute 5 English teachers and, from some selected speeches extracted from their discursive production, some notions as intra and interdiscourse, discursive resonance, discursive memory, among others, can be seen interwoven. We hypothesize that the production of meaning deriving from these English teachers comes from a cleavage between the interdiscursivity about motivation and their position in relation to the English language. Some of these teachers’ discursive inscriptions were delineated as they follow: i) the silenced motivation, in which the teachers come up with several voices, repeating what that has already been said about motivation through silence by excess; also, through an inscription in a process of anomy, the English teachers silence motivation, as they come up with other sayings, in an anomic order, denying their identification with their mother tongue and culture because of a desire to learn the foreign language and culture; ii) the motivation in/from/ by others that resounds, in the way the teachers speak, a relation of alterity on what, in/from desire of other relations (colleagues, students, teaching materials, media, etc.), other forms and alternatives are established as a guarantee of students’ motivation; the teachers are also inscripted in in-service practice training as a space of educational development, because they imagine that the experience of the in-service practice alone, which excludes the educational instruction from the Languages course in which they graduated/were graduating at, taught them how to motivate the students; iii) the motivation as a will of power/knowledge, which means there seems to be teachers’ inscription in the relationship between power and knowledge (Foucault, 1996), disconsidering the conflicts that constitute the English classroom to say that there is a control of the English teaching and learning process and, as a result, they also sustain that they hold control over how to motivate; furthermore, the presence of a resonant voice, whose effect is given by an inscription on the (illusion of) completeness can be seen, because the English teachers believe that while motivating their students, this motivation will provide them with all the missing elements, which would mean that when they motivate students, they would be able to fulfill all the gaps in their learning process.

We seek, through this work, to understand the construction of the pirates’ images from the Golden Age of Piracy (late seventeenth through early eighteenth century) through the observation of the circulation of these images, which are not limited to one field of knowledge. We take into account the importance of the book “A General History of the robberies and murders of the most notorious pirates...” written by Charles Johnson for these constructions, not only literary, but also historiographical provided that the stories of pirates and piracy gained ground in historiography from the twentieth century on. We also seek to show that this historiographical space arises opposed to an apparent historiographical silence about these stories that lasts for about two centuries, related to a new way of writing history in the aesthetic regime, where it arises as a science through a poetics of knowledge, of which the philosopher Jacques Rancière helps us reflect. Lastly, reflecting upon how these images of pirates circulate nowadays, we seek to understand the historicity of the pirates’ images within that aesthetic regime based on some scenes of the film series Pirates of the Caribbean by Disney™.

Jusqu’à son suicide dans la nuit du 12 au 13 mars 1990, à l’âge de 86 ans, Bruno Bettelheim a marqué l’histoire de la psychologie. Dix-sept ouvrages, dont quatre écrits en collaboration, constituent, pour l’essentiel, sa contribution originale au traitement de l’autisme infantile : une thérapie de milieu, entièrement fondée sur les travaux de Freud. Certains n’hésitent pas, d’ailleurs, à le considérer comme un pionnier de l’histoire de la psychanalyse. Après sa mort, cependant, les langues se délient. D’anciens pensionnaires de l’école orthogénique de Chicago racontent que Bettelheim les battait, témoignages corroborés par d’anciens membres du personnel. Des proches collaborateurs ont même affirmé que Bettelheim mentait tout le temps, mensonges qui ont contribué à créer « le mythe Bettelheim », bien décrit dans l’ouvrage de Pollak (1997/2003), Bruno Bettelheim ou la fabrication d’un mythe. L’objectif de ce texte n’est pas d’aborder l’ensemble des reproches adressés à Bettelheim et à son oeuvre, mais d’examiner les failles de son fameux ouvrage Psychanalyse des contes de fées (Bettelheim, 1976). Salué par deux prix en 1977 (National Book Critics Circle Award et National Book Award), Psychanalyse des contes de fées reste, sans conteste, le plus grand succès populaire de tous ses ouvrages, tant aux États-Unis d’Amérique que dans les pays francophones. En 1995, la New York Public Library plaçait l’ouvrage parmi les 159 « livres du siècle », en dépit des quelques critiques dévastatrices parues dès sa sortie (Arthur, 1978 ; Blos, 1978 ; Heisig, 1977 ; Lurie, 1976 ; Zipes, 1979), dont une accusation de plagiat, laquelle accusation réapparaîtra après sa mort (Dundes, 1991b ; Pollak, 1997/2003). Nous présenterons, d’abord, le point de vue de Bettelheim, quant aux bienfaits, pour les enfants, de s’entendre raconter, par un adulte, les contes de fées. Nous verrons alors, à notre grande surprise, que la valeur qu’il leur accorde, en utilisant une grille psychanalytique, est non seulement largement exagérée, mais contraire aux données empiriques et historiques. Le recours de Bettelheim à la notion du complexe d’OEdipe, largement commentée dans son ouvrage, servira d’exemple. Nous discuterons brièvement, ensuite, du silence de Bettelheim sur les auteurs qui ont écrit sur le sujet et de l’accusation de plagiat portée contre lui.

1. nowhere landscape, for clarinets, trombones, percussion, violins, and electronics

nowhere landscape is an eighty-minute work for nine performers, composed of acoustic and electronic sounds. Its fifteen movements invoke a variety of listening strategies, using slow change, stasis, layering, coincidence, and silence to draw attention to the sonic effects of the environment—inside the concert hall as well as the world outside of it. The work incorporates a unique stage set-up: the audience sits in close proximity to the instruments, facing in one of four different directions, while the musicians play from a number of constantly-shifting locations, including in front of, next to, and behind the audience.

Much of nowhere landscape’s material is derived from a collection of field recordings

made by the composer during a road trip from Springfield, MA to Douglas, WY along US- 20, a cross-country route made effectively obsolete by the completion of I-90 in the mid- 20th century. In an homage to artist Ed Ruscha’s 1963 book Twentysix Gasoline Stations, the composer made twenty-six recordings at gas stations along US-20. Many of the movements of nowhere landscape examine the musical potential of these captured soundscapes: familiar and anonymous, yet filled with poignancy and poetic possibility.

2. “The Map and the Territory: Documenting David Dunn’s Sky Drift”

In 1977, David Dunn recruited twenty-six musicians to play his work Sky Drift in the

Anza-Borrego Desert in Southern California. This outdoor performance was documented with photos and recorded with four stationary microphones to tape. A year later, Dunn presented the work in New York City as a “performance/documentation,” playing back the audio recording and projecting slides. In this paper I examine the consequences of this kind of act: what does it mean for a recording of an outdoor work to be shared at an indoor concert event? Can such a complex and interactive experience be successfully flattened into some kind of re-playable documentation? What can a recording capture and what must it exclude?

This paper engages with these questions as they relate to David Dunn’s Sky Drift and to similar works by Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Luther Adams. These case-studies demonstrate different solutions to the difficulty of documenting outdoor performances. Because this music is often heard from a variety of equally-valid perspectives—and because any single microphone only captures sound from one of these perspectives—the physical set-up of these kind of pieces complicate what it means to even “hear the music” at all. To this end, I discuss issues around the “work itself” and “aura” as well as “transparency” and “liveness” in recorded sound, bringing in thoughts and ideas from Walter Benjamin, Howard Becker, Joshua Glasgow, and others. In addition, the artist Robert Irwin and the composer Barry Truax have written about the conceptual distinctions between “the work” and “not- the-work”; these distinctions are complicated by documentation and recording. Without the context, the being-there, the music is stripped of much of its ability to communicate meaning.

This dissertation examines the publication history of a single work: John Calvin’s 1552 Quatre sermons de M. Jehan Calvin traictans des matières fort utiles pour nostre temps, avec briefve exposition du Pseaume lxxxvii. Overlooked for both its contribution to Calvin’s wider corpus and its surprising popularity in English translation, successive editions of Quatre sermons display how Calvin’s argument against the behavior of so-called “Nicodemites” was adapted to various purposes unrelated to refuting religious dissimulation. The present study contributes to research in Calvin’s anti-Nicodemism by highlighting the fruitfulness of focusing on a discrete work and its reception. Borrowing a term (“Newter”) from John Field’s 1579 translation of Quatre sermons, this study’s title adumbrates its argument. English translators capitalized on the intrinsic malleability of a nameless and faceless opponent, the Nicodemite, and the adaptability of Quatre sermons’ genre as a collection of sermons to reshape—or, if you will, disfigure—both Calvin’s original foes and his case against them to advance various new agenda. Yet they were not the first to use the reformer’s sermons this way. They could have learned this from Calvin himself.

My examination of Quatre sermons opens by setting the work in the context of Calvin’s other writings and his political situation (Introduction, chapters one and two). Calvin’s unrelenting literary assault on French Nicodemism over three decades has long been recognized for its consistency and negativity. Yet scholars have tended to neglect how Calvin’s polemic against religious dissimulation could exhibit significant flexibility according to the needs of his context. Whereas Calvin’s preface promises simply to revisit his previous argument against participation in the Mass, his approach to Nicodemism in Quatre sermons seems adapted to accomplish goals beyond decrying false worship, offering a carefully-crafted apology for Calvin’s pastoral authority directed at his political situation. Repeatedly emphasizing God’s purpose to bless his children through the ministry of a rightly-ordered church, Quatre sermons marks a shift in Calvin’s anti-Nicodemite rhetoric away from purely negative critique, stressing instead God’s provision of spiritual nurture via political exile. Read in light of Calvin’s 1552 context, two audiences emerge: sermons ostensibly targeting believers in France who hid their faith also appear especially designed to silence Calvin’s foes in Geneva.

The remainder of the study examines the reception of Quatre sermons in the rapidly shifting religious and social contexts of Marian and Elizabethan England, where it appeared in more unique editions than any of Calvin’s writings besides the Institutio and the reformer’s 1542/45 Genevan Catechism. Calvin’s anti-Nicodemism has not been examined for its distinct contribution to the overall English reception of his thought. Five English versions of Quatre sermons appeared between 1553 and 1584—four of these under a Protestant queen, a situation quite different from the French context Calvin addressed. After situating Calvin’s position within the currents of Tudor Protestant anti-Nicodemism (chapter three), I place each of the five translations in its particular context, investigating prefaces, appendices, marginalia, and translation methods to discover how and why individuals used Quatre sermons (chapters four to six). Like Calvin in 1552, those who brought Quatre sermons to English readers were not primarily concerned with Nicodemism. Rather, the malleability of Calvin’s Nicodemite as polemical opponent and the flexibility of Quatre sermons as a sequence of discrete, interrelated parts made it popular with those eager to press Calvin into the service of a variety of diverse goals he could not have imagined, including turning his anti-Nicodemism against fellow members of the English church.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in men. Whilst treatments for early-stage disease are largely effective, current therapies for metastatic prostate cancer, particularly for bone metastasis, offer only a few months increased lifespan at best. Hence new treatments are urgently required. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) has been investigated for the treatment of prostate cancer where it can ‘silence’ specific cancer-related genes. However the clinical application of siRNA-based gene therapy is limited due to the absence of an optimised gene delivery vector. The optimisation of such gene delivery vectors is routinely undertaken in vitro using 2D cell culture on plastic dishes which does not accurately simulate the in vivo bone cancer metastasis microenvironment. The goal of this thesis was to assess the potential of two different targeted delivery vectors (gold or modified β-cyclodextrin derivatives) to facilitate siRNA receptor-mediated uptake into prostate cancer cells. Furthermore, this project aimed to develop a more physiologically relevant 3D in vitro cell culture model, to mimic prostate cancer bone metastasis, which is suitable for evaluating the delivery of nanoparticulate gene therapeutics. In the first instance, cationic derivatives of gold and β-cyclodextrin were synthesized to complex anionic siRNA. The delivery vectors were targeted to prostate cancer cells using the anisamide ligand which has high affinity for the sigma receptor that is overexpressed by prostate cancer cells. The gold nanoparticle demonstrated high levels of uptake into prostate cancer PC3 cells and efficient gene silencing when transfection was performed in serum-free media. However, due to the absence of a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) stabilising group, the formulation was unsuitable for use in serum-containing conditions. Conversely, the modified β-cyclodextrin formulation demonstrated enhanced stability in the presence of serum due to the inclusion of a PEG chain onto which the anisamide ligand was conjugated. However, the maximum level of gene silencing efficacy from three different prostate cancer cell lines (DU145, VCaP and PC3 cells) was 30 %, suggesting that further optimisation of the formulation would be required prior to application in vivo. In order to develop a more physiologically-relevant in vitro model of prostate cancer bone metastasis, prostate cancer cells (PC3 and LNCaP cells) were cultured in 3D on collagenbased scaffolds engineered to mimic the bone microenvironment. While the model was suitable for assessing nanoparticle-mediated gene knockdown, prostate cancer cells demonstrated a phenotype with lower invasive potential when grown on the scaffolds relative to standard 2D cell culture. Hence, prostate cancer cells (PC3 and LNCaP cells) were subsequently co-cultured with bone osteoblast cells (hFOB 1.19 cells) to enhance the physiological relevance of the model. Co-cultures secreted elevated levels of the MMP9 enzyme, a marker of prostate cancer metastasis, relative to prostate cancer cell monocultures (2D and 3D) indicating enhanced physiological relevance of the model. Furthermore, the coculture model proved suitable for investigating nanoparticle-mediated gene silencing. In conclusion, the work outlined in this thesis identified two different sigma receptor-targeted gene delivery vectors with potential for the treatment of prostate cancer. In addition, a more physiologically relevant model of prostate cancer bone metastasis was developed with the capacity to help optimise gene delivery vectors for the treatment of prostate cancer.

Nous verrons alors, à notre grande surprise, que la valeur qu’il leur accorde, en utilisant une grille psychanalytique, est non seulement largement exagérée, mais contraire aux données empiriques et historiques. Le recours de Bettelheim à la notion du complexe d’OEdipe, largement commentée dans son ouvrage, servira d’exemple. Nous discuterons brièvement, ensuite, du silence de Bettelheim sur les auteurs qui ont écrit sur le sujet et de l’accusation de plagiat portée contre lui.
