O trabalho descrito nesta dissertação de mestrado foca-se em geral na investigação de antenas impressas. São apresentados conceitos básicos, em conjunto com alguns exemplos desenvolvidos. No entanto, o principal foco prende-se com técnicas de miniaturização e reconfigurabilidade de antenas. A miniaturização de antenas é um tema de investigação de longa data, no entanto, novas técnicas e soluções são apresentadas regularmente. Nesta tese, é aplicada uma técnica recente, baseada na introdução de indutores encapsulados no elemento ressonante de uma antena, que permite miniaturizar um monopólio impresso com uma frequência de ressonância de 2.5 GHz. Outro assunto abordado neste trabalho é a reconfigurabilidade de antenas. Algumas das técnicas mais comuns na investigação actual são apresentadas e debatidas. Uma solução com recurso a díodos PIN é usada para estudar esta capacidade. Os conceitos e características deste tipo de componentes são apresentadas sendo feito o desenho e fabrico de um possível monopólio impresso reconfigurável para operação em dupla banda. Por fim, são combinadas as técnicas de miniaturização com inductor encapsulado e reconfigurabilidade através de díodos PIN, por forma a projectar uma antena reconfigurável muito pequena, para operação em duas bandas distintas. Os resultados são discutidos e com base nestes, algumas possíveis otimizações são propostas. The work reported in this dissertation is focused in the printed antenna research. Basic concepts of printed antennas are presented, along with a few examples that were developed. The main focus however, is around miniaturization and reconfigurability of antennas. Antenna miniaturization is a long time research subject, however, new techniques and solutions are presented everyday. In this thesis, a recent technique based on the introduction of chip inductors in the resonating element of a printed antenna is used in order to miniaturize a monopole with a resonating frequency at 2.5 GHz. Another issue approached in this work is antenna reconfigurability. Some common techniques used in antenna reconfiguration are presented and debated. A solution with PIN diodes is used to study this capability. The concepts and characteristics of this type of components are presented and an example of a reconfigurable printed monopole for dual-band operation is designed and fabricated. At last, miniaturization with chip inductor and reconfigurability through PIN diodes are used together to create a very small antenna for dual-band operation. The simulated and measured results are discussed and upon these, some possible optimizations are proposed.

With the constant development of new antibiotics, selective pressure is a force to reckon when investigating antibiotic resistance. Although advantageous for medical treatments, it leads to increasing resistance. It is essential to use more potent and toxic antibiotics. Enzymes capable of hydrolyzing antibiotics are among the most common ways of resistance and TEM variants have been detected in several resistant isolates. Due to the rapid evolution of these variants, complex phenotypes have emerged and the need to understand their biological activity becomes crucial. To investigate the biochemical properties of TEM-180 and TEM-201 several computational methodologies have been used, allowing the comprehension of their structure and catalytic activity, which translates into their biological phenotype. In this work we intent to characterize the interface between these proteins and the several antibiotics used as ligands. We performed explicit solvent molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of these complexes and studied a variety of structural and energetic features. The interfacial residues show a distinct behavior when in complex with different antibiotics. Nevertheless, it was possible to identify some common Hot Spots among several complexes – Lys73, Tyr105 and Glu166. The structural changes that occur during the Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation lead to the conclusion that these variants have an inherent capacity of adapting to the various antibiotics. This capability might be the reason why they can hydrolyze antibiotics that have not been described until now to be degraded by TEM variants. The results obtained with computational and experimental methodologies for the complex with Imipenem have shown that in order to this type of enzymes be able to acylate the antibiotics, they need to be capable to protect the ligand from water molecules.

In practical applications of optimization it is common to have several conflicting objective functions to optimize. Frequently, these functions are subject to noise or can be of black-box type, preventing the use of derivative-based techniques. We propose a novel multiobjective derivative-free methodology, calling it direct multisearch (DMS), which does not aggregate any of the objective functions. Our framework is inspired by the search/poll paradigm of direct-search methods of directional type and uses the concept of Pareto dominance to maintain a list of nondominated points (from which the new iterates or poll centers are chosen). The aim of our method is to generate as many points in the Pareto front as possible from the polling procedure itself, while keeping the whole framework general enough to accommodate other disseminating strategies, in particular, when using the (here also) optional search step. DMS generalizes to multiobjective optimization (MOO) all direct-search methods of directional type. We prove under the common assumptions used in direct search for single objective optimization that at least one limit point of the sequence of iterates generated by DMS lies in (a stationary form of) the Pareto front. However, extensive computational experience has shown that our methodology has an impressive capability of generating the whole Pareto front, even without using a search step. Two by-products of this paper are (i) the development of a collection of test problems for MOO and (ii) the extension of performance and data profiles to MOO, allowing a comparison of several solvers on a large set of test problems, in terms of their efficiency and robustness to determine Pareto fronts.

Multilevel power converters have been introduced as the solution for high-power high-voltage switching applications where they have well-known advantages. Recently, full back-to-back connected multilevel neutral point diode clamped converters (NPC converter) have been used inhigh-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Bipolar-connected back-to-back NPC converters have advantages in long-distance HVDCtransmission systems over the full back-to-back connection, but greater difficulty to balance the dc capacitor voltage divider on both sending and receiving end NPC converters. This study shows that power flow control and dc capacitor voltage balancing are feasible using fast optimum-predictive-based controllers in HVDC systems using bipolar back-to-back-connected five-level NPC multilevel converters. For both converter sides, the control strategytakes in account active and reactive power, which establishes ac grid currents in both ends, and guarantees the balancing of dc bus capacitor voltages inboth NPC converters. Additionally, the semiconductor switching frequency is minimised to reduce switching losses. The performance and robustness of the new fast predictive control strategy, and its capability to solve the DC capacitor voltage balancing problem of bipolar-connected back-to-back NPCconverters are evaluated.

Smart Grids (SGs) appeared as the new paradigm for power system management and operation, being designed to integrate large amounts of distributed energy resources. This new paradigm requires a more efficient Energy Resource Management (ERM) and, simultaneously, makes this a more complex problem, due to the intensive use of distributed energy resources (DER), such as distributed generation, active consumers with demand response contracts, and storage units. This paper presents a methodology to address the energy resource scheduling, considering an intensive use of distributed generation and demand response contracts. A case study of a 30 kV real distribution network, including a substation with 6 feeders and 937 buses, is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. This network is managed by six virtual power players (VPP) with capability to manage the DER and the distribution network.

The characteristics of tunable wavelength filters based on a-SiC:H multilayered stacked pin cells are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The optical transducers were produced by PECVD and tested for a proper fine tuning of the cyan and yellow fluorescent proteins emission. The active device consists of a p-i'(a-SiC:H)-n/p-i(a-Si:H)-n heterostructures sandwiched between two transparent contacts. Experimental data on spectral response analysis, current-voltage characteristics and color and transmission rate discrimination are reported. Cyan and yellow fluorescent input channels were transmitted together, each one with a specific transmission rate and different intensities. The multiplexed optical signal was analyzed by reading out, under positive and negative applied voltages, the generated photocurrents. Results show that the optimized optical transducer has the capability of combining the transient fluorescent signals onto a single output signal without losing any specificity (color and intensity). It acts as a voltage controlled optical filter: when the applied voltages are chosen appropriately the transducer can select separately the cyan and yellow channel emissions (wavelength and frequency) and also to quantify their relative intensities. A theoretical analysis supported by a numerical simulation is presented.

This study explores a large set of OC and EC measurements in PM(10) and PM(2.5) aerosol samples, undertaken with a long term constant analytical methodology, to evaluate the capability of the OC/EC minimum ratio to represent the ratio between the OC and EC aerosol components resulting from fossil fuel combustion (OC(ff)/EC(ff)). The data set covers a wide geographical area in Europe, but with a particular focus upon Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, and includes a great variety of sites: urban (background, kerbside and tunnel), industrial, rural and remote. The highest minimum ratios were found in samples from remote and rural sites. Urban background sites have shown spatially and temporally consistent minimum ratios, of around 1.0 for PM(10) and 0.7 for PM(2.5).The consistency of results has suggested that the method could be used as a tool to derive the ratio between OC and EC from fossil fuel combustion and consequently to differentiate OC from primary and secondary sources. To explore this capability, OC and EC measurements were performed in a busy roadway tunnel in central Lisbon. The OC/EC ratio, which reflected the composition of vehicle combustion emissions, was in the range of 03-0.4. Ratios of OC/EC in roadside increment air (roadside minus urban background) in Birmingham, UK also lie within the range 03-0.4. Additional measurements were performed under heavy traffic conditions at two double kerbside sites located in the centre of Lisbon and Madrid. The OC/EC minimum ratios observed at both sites were found to be between those of the tunnel and those of urban background air, suggesting that minimum values commonly obtained for this parameter in open urban atmospheres over-predict the direct emissions of OC(ff) from road transport. The large penetration of intermittent resources, such as solar and wind generation, involves the use of storage systems in order to improve power system operation. Electric Vehicles (EVs) with gridable capability (V2G) can operate as a means for storing energy. This paper proposes an algorithm to be included in a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which performs an intelligent management of three types of consumers: domestic, commercial and industrial, that includes the joint management of loads and the charge/discharge of EVs batteries. The proposed methodology has been implemented in a SCADA system developed by the authors of this paper – the SCADA House Intelligent Management (SHIM). Any event in the system, such as a Demand Response (DR) event, triggers the use of an optimization algorithm that performs the optimal energy resources scheduling (including loads and EVs), taking into account the priorities of each load defined by the installation users. A case study considering a specific consumer with several loads and EVs is presented in this paper.

The end consumers in a smart grid context are seen as active players. The distributed generation resources applied in smart home system as a micro and small-scale systems can be wind generation, photovoltaic and combine heat and power facility. The paper addresses the management of domestic consumer resources, i.e. wind generation, solar photovoltaic, combined heat and power, electric vehicle with gridable capability and loads, in a SCADA system with intelligent methodology to support the user decision in real time. The main goal is to obtain the better management of excess wind generation that may arise in consumer’s distributed generation resources. The optimization methodology is performed in a SCADA House Intelligent Management context and the results are analyzed to validate the SCADA system.

This paper presents a new methodology for the creation and management of coalitions in Electricity Markets. This approach is tested using the multi-agent market simulator MASCEM, taking advantage of its ability to provide the means to model and simulate VPP (Virtual Power Producers). VPPs are represented as coalitions of agents, with the capability of negotiating both in the market, and internally, with their members, in order to combine and manage their individual specific characteristics and goals, with the strategy and objectives of the VPP itself. The new features include the development of particular individual facilitators to manage the communications amongst the members of each coalition independently from the rest of the simulation, and also the mechanisms for the classification of the agents that are candidates to join the coalition. In addition, a global study on the results of the Iberian Electricity Market is performed, to compare and analyze different approaches for defining consistent and adequate strategies to integrate into the agents of MASCEM. This, combined with the application of learning and prediction techniques provide the agents with the ability to learn and adapt themselves, by adjusting their actions to the continued evolving states of the world they are playing in.

Negotiation is a fundamental tool for reaching understandings that allow each involved party to gain an advantage for themselves by the end of the process. In recent years, with the increasing of compe-titiveness in most sectors, negotiation procedures become present in practically all of them. One particular environment in which the competitiveness has been increasing exponentially is the electricity markets sector. This work is directed to the study of electricity markets’ partici-pating entities interaction, namely in what concerns the formation, management and operation of aggregating entities – Virtual Power Players (VPPs). VPPs are responsible for managing coalitions of market players with small market negotiating influence, which take strategic advantage in entering such aggregations, to increase their negotiating power. This chapter presents a negotiation methodology for the creation and management of coalitions in Electricity Markets. RESUMO: Objetivos – Determinar a sensibilidade e especificidade das ponderações Difusão (DWI) e T2 Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) na avaliação de lesões da substância branca (SB) e verificar em que medida se complementam, por forma a criar um conjunto de boas práticas na RM cranioencefálica de rotina. Metodologia – Recorrendo-se a uma metodologia quantitativa, efetuou-se uma análise retrospetiva da qual foram selecionados 30 pacientes, 10 sem patologia e 20 com patologia (2 com EM, 7 com Leucoencefalopatia, 6 com doença microangiopática e 5 com patologia da substância branca indefinida). Obteve-se uma amostra de 60 imagens, nomeadamente: 30 imagens ponderadas em DWI e 30 em T2 FLAIR. Recorrendo ao programa Viewdex®, três observadores avaliaram um conjunto de imagens segundo sete critérios: visibilidade, deteção, homogeneidade, localização, margens e dimensões da lesão e capacidade de diagnóstico. Com os resultados obtidos recorreu-se ao cálculo de sensibilidade e especificidade pelas Curvas ROC, bem como à análise estatística, nomeadamente, Teste-T, Índice de Concordância Kappa e coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre as variáveis em estudo. Resultados – Os resultados de sensibilidade e de especificidade obtidos para a ponderação T2 FLAIR foram superiores (0,915 e 0,038, respetivamente) aos da ponderação DWI (0,08 e 0,100, respetivamente). Não se verificaram variâncias populacionais significativas. Obteve-se uma elevada correlação linear entre as variáveis com um valor r situado entre 0,8 e 0,99. Verificou-se também uma variabilidade considerável entre os observadores. Conclusões – Dados os baixos valores de sensibilidade e especificidade obtidos para a DWI, sugere-se que esta deva ser incluída no protocolo de rotina de crânio como auxiliar no diagnóstico diferencial com outras patologias.

A Reabilitação Urbana é uma preocupação que afeta a maioria dos municípios portugueses. A degradação nosso património edificado da nossa memória, principalmente nos centros históricos, tornou-se um problema que urge resolver rapidamente. Na conjuntura que o país atravessa, com o excesso de construção nova que nos últimos anos inundou o mercado, a reabilitação assume-se como uma opção para a indústria da construção civil. No caso do Bairro da Mouraria, o esforço que o município tem vindo a desenvolver, que implica grandes investimentos e grande esforço financeiro, no difícil contexto económico do país, assume maior relevância. Esta dissertação debruça-se sobre o caminho percorrido, as condicionantes das soluções de projeto e do investimento na reabilitação no Bairro da Mouraria. E sobre os aspetos que envolvem esta atividade e conferem à recuperação do edificado um carácter especial, pois trata-se de um tipo de obra que se reveste de alguma imprevisibilidade, que pode mesmo levar a custos adicionais e à inviabilidade dos investimentos. O que justifica que para este tipo de obras tenha de haver uma atenção redobrada desde a fase do levantamento do edificado, das suas patologias, das obras a realizar, das soluções arquitetónicas e técnicas a adotar, passando pela fase de licenciamento do projeto, até à recuperação física dos edifícios. Pretende-se, também, apresentar algumas situações típicas de reabilitação de edifícios antigos, aprofundando-se as questões técnicas sobre as patologias mais correntes, a viabilidade económica das operações e enquadrando os principais fatores que têm retardado o processo.

A presença de sistemas eletrónicos nos veículos automóveis tem vindo a aumentar de forma considerável nos últimos 30 anos, tornando possível o aumento dos padrões de eficiência, segurança e conforto dos mesmos. Os sistemas de acionamento automático dos limpa-para-brisas, baseados em sensores de chuva óticos, têm registado um crescimento quase exponencial nos últimos 10 a 15 anos; no ano 2000, apenas 5 % dos veículos novos produzidos na Europa estavam equipados com este sistema, hoje é um equipamento amplamente difundido na oferta automóvel existente. O presente trabalho consistiu no estudo de uma solução para deteção de chuva em veículos automóveis com a aplicação de um sensor piezoelétrico, tendo em vista a obtenção de uma solução mais versátil e aplicável em vários pontos do veículo. As reduzidas dimensões, a elevada sensibilidade do sensor e a facilidade de aplicação nas superfícies de ensaio foram fatores que motivaram a escolha deste tipo de equipamento como elemento sensorial. As hipóteses definidas para o procedimento laboratorial basearam-se nas conclusões obtidas em estudos anteriormente desenvolvidos no campo dos sensores de chuva para automóveis e nas capacidades dos materiais piezoelétricos para medição de pluviosidade. Os sensores foram instalados sob as superfícies do veículo que apresentavam, simultaneamente, uma maior exposição à pluviosidade, quando este está em movimento, e um menor risco de sofrer danos. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que a utilização deste tipo de sensores permite detetar elevados níveis de pluviosidade e em superfícies com considerável capacidade de deformação elástica. A sua implementação futura em veículos automóveis exige mais algum trabalho de melhoria dos processos de fixação dos sensores e do condicionamento de sinal utilizados.
