During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 123, two sites were drilled in the deep Indian Ocean. Physical properties were measured in soft Quaternary and Lower Cretaceous sediments to relatively fresh, glass-bearing pillow lavas and massive basalts. Porosities ranged from 89% near the seafloor to 1.6% for the dense basalts. This self-consistent set of measurements permitted some descriptive models of physical properties to be more rigorously tested than before. Predictive relationships between porosity and compressional-wave velocity have generally been based upon the Wyllie time average equation. However, this equation does not adequately describe the actual relationship between these two parameters, and many have attempted to improve it. In most cases, models were derived by testing them against a set of data representing a relatively narrow range of porosity values. Similarly, the use of the Wyllie equation has often been justified by a pseudolinear fit to the data over a narrow range of porosity values. The limitations of the Wyllie relationship have been re-emphasized here. A semi-empirical acoustic impedance equation is developed that provides a more accurate porosity-velocity transform, using realistic material parameters, than has hitherto been possible. A closer correlation can be achieved with this semi-empirical relationship than with more theoretically based equations. In addition, a satisfactory empirical equation can be used to describe the relationship between thermal conductivity and porosity. If enough is known about core sample lithologies to provide estimates of the matrix and pore water parameters, then these predictive equations enable one to describe completely the behavior of a saturated rock core in terms of compressional-wave velocity, thermal conductivity, porosity, and bulk density.

The Drake Passage (DP) is the major geographic constriction for the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and exerts a strong control on the exchange of physical, chemical, and biological properties between the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean basins. Resolving changes in the flow of circumpolar water masses through this gateway is, therefore, crucial for advancing our understanding of the Southern Ocean's role in global ocean and climate variability. Here, we reconstruct changes in DP throughflow dynamics over the past 65,000 y based on grain size and geochemical properties of sediment records from the southernmost continental margin of South America. Combined with published sediment records from the Scotia Sea, we argue for a considerable total reduction of DP transport and reveal an up to ~40% decrease in flow speed along the northernmost ACC pathway entering the DP during glacial times. Superimposed on this long-term decrease are high-amplitude, millennial-scale variations, which parallel Southern Ocean and Antarctic temperature patterns. The glacial intervals of strong weakening of the ACC entering the DP imply an enhanced export of northern ACC surface and intermediate waters into the South Pacific Gyre and reduced Pacific-Atlantic exchange through the DP ("cold water route"). We conclude that changes in DP throughflow play a critical role for the global meridional overturning circulation and interbasin exchange in the Southern Ocean, most likely regulated by variations in the westerly wind field and changes in Antarctic sea ice extent.

The fabric of sediments recovered at sites drilled on the Indus Fan, Owen Ridge, and Oman margin during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 117 was examined by scanning electron microscopy to document changes that accompany sediment burial. Two sediment types were studied: (1) biogenic sediments consisting of a variety of marly nannofossil and nannofossil oozes and chalks and (2) terrigenous sediments consisting of fine-grained turbidites deposited in association with the Indus Fan. Biogenic sediments were examined with samples from the seafloor to depths of 306 m below seafloor (mbsf) on the Owen Ridge (Site 722) and 368 mbsf on the Oman margin (Sites 723 and 728). Over these depth ranges the biogenic sediments are characterized by a random arrangement of microfossils and display little chemical diagenetic alteration. The microfossils are dispersed within a fine-grained matrix that is predominantly microcrystalline carbonate particles on the Owen Ridge and clay and organic matter on the Oman margin. Sediments with abundant siliceous microfossils display distinct, open fabrics with high porosity. Porosity reduction resulting from gravitational compaction appears to be the primary process affecting fabric change in the biogenic sediment sections. Fabric of illite-rich clayey silts and silty claystones from the Indus Fan (Site 720) and Owen Ridge (Sites 722 and 731) was examined for a composite section extending from 45 to 985 mbsf. In this section fabric of the fine-grained turbidites changes from one with small flocculated clay domains, random particle arrangement, and high porosity to a fabric with larger domains, strong preferred particle orientation roughly parallel to bedding, and lower porosity. These changes are accomplished by a growth in domain size, primarily through increasing face-to-face contacts, and by particle reorientation which is characterized by a sharp increase in alignment with bedding between 200 and 400 mbsf. Despite extensive particle reorientation, flocculated clay fabric persists in the deepest samples examined, particularly adjacent to silt grains, and the sediments lack fissility. Fabric changes over the 45-985 mbsf interval occur in response to gravitational compaction. Porosity reduction and development of preferred particle orientation in the Indus Fan and Owen Ridge sections occur at greater depths than outlined in previous fabric models for terrigenous sediments as a consequence of a greater abundance of silt and a greater abundance of illite and chlorite clays.

Sea surface temperatures and sea-ice extent are the most critical variables to evaluate the Southern Ocean paleoceanographic evolution in relation to the development of the global carbon cycle, atmospheric CO2 variability and ocean-atmosphere circulation. In contrast to the Atlantic and the Indian sectors, the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean has been insufficiently investigated so far. To cover this gap of information we present diatom-based estimates of summer sea surface temperature (SSST) and winter sea-ice concentration (WSI) from 17 sites in the polar South Pacific to study the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) at the EPILOG time slice (19,000-23,000 cal. years BP). Applied statistical methods are the Imbrie and Kipp Method (IKM) and the Modern Analog Technique (MAT) to estimate temperature and sea-ice concentration, respectively. Our data display a distinct LGM east-west differentiation in SSST and WSI with steeper latitudinal temperature gradients and a winter sea-ice edge located consistently north of the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge in the Ross sea sector. In the eastern sector of our study area, which is governed by the Amundsen Abyssal Plain, the estimates yield weaker latitudinal SSST gradients together with a variable extended winter sea-ice field. In this sector, sea-ice extent may have reached sporadically the area of the present Subantarctic Front at its maximum LGM expansion. This pattern points to topographic forcing as major controller of the frontal system location and sea-ice extent in the western Pacific sector whereas atmospheric conditions like the Southern Annular Mode and the ENSO affected the oceanographic conditions in the eastern Pacific sector. Although it is difficult to depict the location and the physical nature of frontal systems separating the glacial Southern Ocean water masses into different zones, we found a distinct temperature gradient in latitudes straddled by the modern Southern Subtropical Front. Considering that the glacial temperatures north of this zone are similar to the modern, we suggest that this represents the Glacial Southern Subtropical Front (GSSTF), which delimits the zone of strongest glacial SSST cooling (>4K) to its North. The southern boundary of the zone of maximum cooling is close to the glacial 4°C isotherm. This isotherm, which is in the range of SSST at the modern Antarctic Polar Front (APF), represents a circum-Antarctic feature and marks the northern edge of the glacial Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). We also assume that a glacial front was established at the northern average winter sea ice edge, comparable with the modern Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front (SACCF). During the glacial, this front would be located in the area of the modern APF. The northward deflection of colder than modern surface waters along the South American continent leads to a significant cooling of the glacial Humboldt Current surface waters (4-8K), which affects the temperature regimes as far north as into tropical latitudes. The glacial reduction of ACC temperatures may also result in the significant cooling in the Atlantic and Indian Southern Ocean, thus may enhance thermal differentiation of the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continental cooling. Comparison with temperature and sea ice simulations for the last glacial based on numerical simulations show that the majority of modern models overestimate summer and winter sea ice cover and that there exists few models that reproduce our temperature data rather well.

Koopman et al. (2014) developed a method to consistently decompose gross exports in value-added terms that accommodate infinite repercussions of international and inter-sector transactions. This provides a better understanding of trade in value added in global value chains than does the conventional gross exports method, which is affected by double-counting problems. However, the new framework is based on monetary input--output (IO) tables and cannot distinguish prices from quantities; thus, it is unable to consider financial adjustments through the exchange market. In this paper, we propose a framework based on a physical IO system, characterized by its linear programming equivalent that can clarify the various complexities relevant to the existing indicators and is proved to be consistent with Koopman's results when the physical decompositions are evaluated in monetary terms. While international monetary tables are typically described in current U.S. dollars, the physical framework can elucidate the impact of price adjustments through the exchange market. An iterative procedure to calculate the exchange rates is proposed, and we also show that the physical framework is also convenient for considering indicators associated with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Recently a new type of cosmological singularity has been postulated for infinite barotropic index w in the equation of state p = wρ of the cosmological fluid, but vanishing pressure and density at the singular event. Apparently the barotropic index w would be the only physical quantity to blow up at the singularity. In this talk we would like to discuss the strength of such singularities and compare them with other types. We show that they are weak singularities

Following the success achieved in previous research projects usin non-destructive methods to estimate the physical and mechanical aging of particle and fibre boards, this paper studies the relationships between aging, physical and mechanical changes, using non-destructive measurements of oriented strand board (OSB). 184 pieces of OSB board from a French source were tested to analyze its actual physical and mechanical properties. The same properties were estimated using acoustic non-destructive methods (ultrasound and stress wave velocity) during a physical laboratory aging test. Measurements were recorded of propagation wave velocity with the sensors aligned, edge to edge, and forming an angle of 45 degrees, with both sensors on the same face of the board. This is because aligned measures are not possible on site. The velocity results are always higher in 45 degree measurements. Given the results of statistical analysis, it can be concluded that there is a strong relationship between acoustic measurements and the decline in physical and mechanical properties of the panels due to aging. The authors propose several models to estimate the physical and mechanical properties of board, as well as their degree of aging. The best results are obtained using ultrasound, although the difference in comparison with the stress wave method is not very significant. A reliable prediction of the degree of deterioration (aging) of board is presented.

This paper studies the relationship between aging, physical changes and the results of non-destructive testing of plywood. 176 pieces of plywood were tested to analyze their actual and estimated density using non-destructive methods (screw withdrawal force and ultrasound wave velocity) during a laboratory aging test. From the results of statistical analysis it can be concluded that there is a strong relationship between the non-destructive measurements carried out, and the decline in the physical properties of the panels due to aging. The authors propose several models to estimate board density. The best results are obtained with ultrasound. A reliable prediction of the degree of deterioration (aging) of board is presented.

There is evidence that the climate changes and that now, the change is influenced and accelerated by the CO2 augmentation in atmosphere due to combustion by humans. Such ?Climate change? is on the policy agenda at the global level, with the aim of understanding and reducing its causes and to mitigate its consequences. In most countries and international organisms UNO (e.g. Rio de Janeiro 1992), OECD, EC, etc . . . the efforts and debates have been directed to know the possible causes, to predict the future evolution of some variable conditioners, and trying to make studies to fight against the effects or to delay the negative evolution of such. The Protocol of Kyoto 1997 set international efforts about CO2 emissions, but it was partial and not followed e.g. by USA and China . . . , and in Durban 2011 the ineffectiveness of humanity on such global real challenges was set as evident. Among all that, the elaboration of a global model was not boarded that can help to choose the best alternative between the feasible ones, to elaborate the strategies and to evaluate the costs, and the authors propose to enter in that frame for study. As in all natural, technological and social changes, the best-prepared countries will have the best bear and the more rapid recover. In all the geographic areas the alternative will not be the same one, but the model must help us to make the appropriated decision. It is essential to know those areas that are more sensitive to the negative effects of climate change, the parameters to take into account for its evaluation, and comprehensive plans to deal with it. The objective of this paper is to elaborate a mathematical model support of decisions, which will allow to develop and to evaluate alternatives of adaptation to the climatic change of different communities in Europe and Latin-America, mainly in especially vulnerable areas to the climatic change, considering in them all the intervening factors. The models will consider criteria of physical type (meteorological, edaphic, water resources), of use of the ground (agriculturist, forest, mining, industrial, urban, tourist, cattle dealer), economic (income, costs, benefits, infrastructures), social (population), politician (implementation, legislation), educative (Educational programs, diffusion) and environmental, at the present moment and the future. The intention is to obtain tools for aiding to get a realistic position for these challenges, which are an important part of the future problems of humanity in next decades.

The application of the response of fruits to low energy for mechanical impacts is described, for evaluation of post-harvest ripening of avocadoes of the variety "Hass". An impactor of 50g of weight, provided with an accelerometer, and free-falling from a height of 4 cm, is used; it is interfaced to a computer and uses a special software for retrieving and analyzing the deceleration data. Impact response parameters of individual fruits were compared to firmness of the pulp, measured by the most used method of double-plate puncture, as well as to other physical and physiological parameters: color, skin puncture ethylene production rate and others. Two groups of fruits were carefully selected, stored at 6º C (60 days) and ripened at 20ºC (11 days), and tested during the storage period. It is shown that, as in other types of fruits, impact response can be a good predictor of firmness in avocadoes, obtaining the same accuracy as with destructive firmness measurements. Mathematical and multiple regression models are calculated and compared to measured data, with which a prediction of storage period can be made for these fruits.

This study analyses the variation of main physical-mechanical properties of wood along the longitudinal and radial directions of the tree for Abies alba Mill. growing in the Spanish Pyrenees. Small clear specimens were used to study the properties of volumetric shrinkage (VS), density (?), hardness (H), bending strength (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), maximum compressive strength parallel to the grain (MCS) and impact strength (K). Several models of properties variation in the longitudinal and radial directions were analyzed. Main trends of variation of properties throughout the tree stem were identified although none of them could be fitted to predictive statistical models. Along the longitudinal direction, the properties studied followed a downward trend from the base to the crown, which was not significant in all cases, indicating that no differences in quality existed. Throughout the radial direction the trend is upward for the first 40-50 growth rings, after which it slopes downwards, more gently at first until rings 70-75 and then more steeply. This behaviour is related to variation in wood structure from the pith to the bark, depending on whether the wood is juvenile, sapwood or heartwood, and to wood maturity and microfibril angle. Authors encourage carrying further studies on other populations of A. alba in the Spanish Pyrenees to check if the trends found in this study apply to other provenances.

ABSTRACT Food is a complex system formed by several structures at different scales: macroscopic and microscopic. Many properties of foods that are relevant to process engineering or quality and postharvest treatments are related to their microstructure. This Ph.D Thesis proposes a complete methodology for food structure determination, in a multiscale way, based on the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) phenomenon since NMR techniques are non-invasive and non-destructive, and allow both, macro- and micro-structure study. Different NMR procedures are used depending on the structure level under study. For the macrostructure level, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed its usefulness for food characterization. For microstructure insight, MRI required high acquisition times, which is a hindrance for transference to industry applications. Therefore, optimization of NMR procedures based on T1/T2 relaxometry sequences was a key strategy in this Thesis. These NMR relaxometry protocols, are successfully implemented in high magnetic field. Microstructure of entire food products have been characterized for the first time using these protocols. Two different types of food products have been studied: food models and actual food (apples). Furthermore, as a first step for the food industry implementation, a grading line system, specially designed for working under NMR conditions in previous works of the LPF-TAGRALIA group, is improved. The study and selection of the most suitable rapid sequence to detect two different types of disorders in apples (watercore and internal breakdown) is performed and the real time image motion correction is applied. In addition, artificial vision protocols for the automatic classification of apples potentially affected by watercore are applied. This document is divided into seven different chapters: Chapter 2 explains the thesis background and the framework of the project in which it has been worked. Chapter 3 comprises the state of the art. Chapter 4 establishes de objectives of this Ph.D thesis. The results are divided into five different sections (in Chapter 5) that correspond to published peered reviewed works. Section 5.1 assesses the watercore development in apples with MRI and studies the effect of fruit location in the canopy. Section 5.2 is an MRI and 2D relaxometry study for macro- and microstructure assessment in food models. Section 5.3 is a non-destructive microstructural study using 2D T1/T2 relaxometry on watercore affected apples. Section 5.4 makes a comparison of X-ray CT and MRI on watercore disorder of different apple cultivars. Section 5.5, that is a study of online MRI sequences for the evaluation of apple internal quality. The subsequent chapters offer a general discussion and conclusions (Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 respectively) of all the works performed in the frame of this Ph.D thesis (two peer reviewed journals, one book chapter and one international congress). Finally, three appendices are included in which an introduction to NMR principles is offered and two published proceedings regarding the effect of fiber on the rehydration of extruded breakfast cereal are displayed. The most relevant results can be summarized into three sections: results on macrostructure, results on microstructure and results on on-line MRI. Results on macrostructure: - MRI was successfully used for macrostructure characterization. Indeed, 3D reconstruction of MRI in apples allows to identify two different types of watercore (radial and block), which are characterized by the percentage of damage and the connectivity (Euler number). - MRI provides better contrast for watercore than X-Ray CT as verified on identical samples. Furthermore, X-Ray CT images acquisition time was around 12 times higher (25 minutes) than MRI acquisition time (2 minutes 2 seconds). Results on microstructure: - 2D T1/T2 relaxometry were successfully applied for microstructure (subcellular level) characterization. 2D T1/T2 relaxometry sequences have been applied for the first time on high field for entire food pieces, being a non-destructive way to achieve microstructure study. - The use of MRI together with 2D T1/T2 relaxometry sequences allows a non-destructive multiscale study of food. Results on on-line MRI: - The use of on-line MRI was successful for the identification of two different internal disorders in apples: watercore and internal breakdown. FLASH imaging was a suitable technique for the on-line detection of watercore disorder in apples, with no slice selection, since watercore is a physiological disorder that may be developed anywhere in the apple volume. 1.3 fruits were imaged per second (768 ms per fruit). UFLARE imaging is a suitable sequence for the on-line detection of internal breakdown disorder in apples. Slice selection was used, as internal breakdown is usually located in the central slice of the apple volume. 0.67 fruits were imaged per second (1475 ms per fruit). In both cases (FLASH and UFLARE) motion correction was performed in real time, during the acquisition of the images.

Purely data-driven approaches for machine learning present difficulties when data are scarce relative to the complexity of the model or when the model is forced to extrapolate. On the other hand, purely mechanistic approaches need to identify and specify all the interactions in the problem at hand (which may not be feasible) and still leave the issue of how to parameterize the system. In this paper, we present a hybrid approach using Gaussian processes and differential equations to combine data-driven modeling with a physical model of the system. We show how different, physically inspired, kernel functions can be developed through sensible, simple, mechanistic assumptions about the underlying system. The versatility of our approach is illustrated with three case studies from motion capture, computational biology, and geostatistics.
