Studies on the electrical switching behavior of melt quenched bulk Si15Te85-xSbx glasses have been undertaken in the composition range (1 <= x <= 10), in order to understand the effect of Sb addition on the electrical switching behavior of Si15Te85-x base glass. It has been observed that all the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied exhibit a smooth memory type switching. Further, the switching voltages are found to decrease almost linearly with Sb content, which indicates that the metallicity of the dopant plays a dominant role in this system compared to network connectivity/rigidity. The thickness dependence of switching voltage (V-th) indicates a clear thermal origin for the switching mechanism. The temperature variation of switching voltages reveals that the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied have a moderate thermal stability. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report here, the study carried out on piezoelectric thin film for MEMS/Microsensor applications. The study includes characterization of sputtered thin film using indirect methods and comparison of behavior using cantilever technique for the confirmation of piezoelectric property. A suitable experimental setup was designed and fabricated for subjecting the cantilever to vibrate. The data was recorded for piezoelectric thin films deposited with different compositions. It is clearly evident that the direct method is inexpensive and easier for determining the quality of the deposited piezoelectric thin film.

Alternating differential scanning calorimetry measurements have been undertaken on the Ge15Te85-xInx (1 <= x <= 11) series of glasses. It is found that there is a marginal decrease in the glass transition temperature (T-g) in the composition range 1 <= x <= 3. Above x = 3, a monotonic increase is seen in T-g which indicates a continuous build-up in network connectivity and absence of any nanophase separation. The non-reversing heat flow (Delta H-NR) has been found to exhibit a broad trough between the compositions x = 3 and 7, which clearly indicates the presence of a thermally reversing window in Ge15Te85-xInx glasses in the composition range 3 <= x <= 7.

Transparent SrO-2B(2)O(3) (SBO) glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) studies carried out on the as-quenched glasses confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The thermal parameters were evaluated for the as-quenched glass-plates using non-isothermal DTA experiments. The average values of the activation energies for the glass transition and crystallization of these glasses were 800 +/- 10 kJ/mol and 298 +/- 10 kJ/mol respectively. The values of the kinetic parameters that were obtained by different non-isothermal techniques were in close agreement.

Refining reactions in steelmaking primarily involve oxidation of impurity element(s). The oxidation potential of the slag and the activity of oxygen in the metal (h(O)) are the major factors controlling these chemical reactions. In turn, the oxidation potential of the slag is influenced strongly by the equilibrium distribution of oxygen between ferrous and ferric oxides. We recently investigated the activity coefficient of FeO in steelmaking slag and the effect of chemical composition thereon. This work is focused on estimation of theactivity coefficient of Fe2O3.

Elastic properties of Li2O-PbO-B2O3 glasses have been investigated using sound velocity measurements at 10 MHz. Four series of glasses have been investigated with different concentrations of Li2O, PbO and B2O3. The variations of molar volume have been examined for the influences of Li2O and PbO. The elastic moduli reveal trends in their compositional dependence. The bulk and shear modulus increases monotonically with increase in the concentration of tetrahedral boron which increases network dimensionality. The variation of bulk moduli has also been correlated to the variation in energy densities. The Poisson's ratio found to be insensitive to the concentration of tetrahedral boron in the structure. The experimental Debye temperatures are in good agreement with the expected theoretical values. Experimental observations have been examined in view, the presence of borate network and the possibility of non-negligible participation of lead in network formation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Nanostructured copper(II) oxide film was deposited using reactive DC magnetron sputtering. It has been characterized using XRD, EDAX, XPS, and FESEM. The grain size of copper oxide film was found to be 40-65 nm with size distribution. The entire study was divided into two parts. In the first part, the film has been studied for its response to alcohol at different temperatures to find the optimum sensing temperature, whereas in the second part, the film sensitivity to different alcohol concentrations were studied at fixed optimum operating temperature. The optimum temperature for the response of ethanol was observed to be 400 C,and the response for different concentrations was found to be almost linear.

When the products of reaction between elemental sulphur and copper oxide at elevated temperature in vacuum are bubbled through chilled inert organic solvents like carbontetrachloride, orange-yellow solutions were obtained indicating the presence of lower oxide of sulphur. This lower oxide has been found to be disulphur monoxide as shown by three different types of reactions; (1) Mercury decomposition, (2) Reaction with hydrogen iodide and hydrolytic reaction in an alkaline homogeneous medium.

Transparent glasses of various compositions in the system (100 -x)(Li2B4O7)-x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction studies confirmed the as-quenched glasses to be amorphous and the heat-treated to be nanocrystalline. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the size of the crystallites to be in the nano-range and confirmed the phase to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 (BLTN) which was, initially, identified by X-ray powder diffraction. The frequency, temperature and compositional dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were investigated in the 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range. Electrical relaxations were analyzed using the electric modulus formalisms. The imaginary part of electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The frequency dependent electrical conductivity was rationalized using Jonscher's power law. The activation energy associated with the dc conductivity was ascribed to the motion of Li+ ions in the glass matrix. The activation energy associated with dielectric relaxation was almost equal to that of the dc conductivity, indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. RECENT work on the lower oxide of sulphur1,2 has established that disulphur monoxide (S2O) or its polymeric form is produced when sulphur is burnt in oxygen under reduced pressure. It has now been shown that it is possible to make use of an oxide of a heavy metal as a source of limited supply of oxygen to prepare the disulphur monoxide. For example, when a mixture of finely powdered cupric oxide and sulphur (1 : 5 by weight) is heated under vacuum in a glass tube gaseous products are evolved. which, on cooling in a trap surrounded by liquid air, will give an orange-red condensate (S2O)x. This condensate also gives off sulphur dioxide in stages as the temperature is raised, finally leaving a residue of elemental sulphur. Copper sulphide and excess of sulphur are left behind in the reaction tube.

The role of oxide surface chemical composition and solvent on ion solvation and ion transport of ``soggy sand'' electrolytes are discussed here. A ``soggy sand'' electrolyte system comprising dispersions of hydrophilic/hydrophobic functionalized aerosil silica in lithium perchlorate methoxy polyethylene glycol solution was employed for the study. Static and dynamic rheology measurements show formation of an attractive particle network in the case of the composite with unmodified aerosil silica (i.e., with surface silanol groups) as well as composites with hydrophobic alkane groups. While particle network in the composite with hydrophilic aerosil silica (unmodified) were due to hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic aerosil silica particles were held together via van der Waals forces. The network strength in the latter case (i.e., for hydrophobic composites) were weaker compared with the composite with unmodified aerosil silica. Both unmodified silica as well as hydrophobic silica composites displayed solid-like mechanical strength. No enhancement in ionic conductivity compared to the liquid electrolyte was observed in the case of the unmodified silica. This was attributed to the existence of a very strong particle network, which led to the ``expulsion'' of all conducting entities from the interfacial region between adjacent particles. The ionic conductivity for composites with hydrophobic aerosil particles displayed ionic conductivity dependent on the size of the hydrophobic chemical moiety. No spanning attractive particle network was observed for aerosil particles with surfaces modified with stronger hydrophilic groups (than silanol). The composite resembled a sol, and no percolation in ionic conductivity was observed.

The stress-optic coefficient (n3/2)(q11-q12) has been determined for a series of 18 optical glasses of different compositions in the wavelength range 5700-3200 Å. The coefficients are negative for all the glasses except for a high-lead-content glass of density 6·7 and refractive index 1·89. The numerical value of the coefficient decreases as one proceeds to the ultraviolet. This behaviour is just the opposite of what is observed in fused silica. By applying Mueller's theory, the strain polarizability constant and its dispersion have been evaluated.

Optically clear glasses of various compositions in the system (100-x)Li2B4O7 center dot x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the composition of the nano-crystallites to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30. B-11 NMR studies revealed the transformation of BO4 structural units into BO3 units owing to the increase in TiO6 and NbO6 structural units as the composition of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 increased in the glass. This, in turn, resulted in an increase in the density of the glasses. The influence of the nominal composition of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites on optical band gap (E-opt), Urbach energy (Delta E), refractive index (n), molar refraction (R-m), optical polarizability (alpha(m)) and third order non-linear optical susceptibility (chi(3)) were studied.
