Conjugated polymers have been subject of great interest in the recent literature from both fundamental point of view and applied science perspective. Among the several types of conjugated polymers used in recent investigations, polythiophene and its derivatives have attracted considerable attention over the past 20 years due to their high mobility and other remarkable solid-state properties. They have potential applications in many fields, such as microelectronic devices, catalysts, organic field-effect transistors, chemical sensors, and biosensors. They have been studied as gas and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensors using different principles or transduction techniques, such as optical absorption, conductivity, and capacitance measurements. In this work, we report on the fabrication of gas sensors based on a conducting polymer on an interdigitated gold electrode. We use as active layer of the sensor a polythiophene derivative: poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and analyzed its conductivity as response for exposure to dynamic flow of saturated vapors of six VOCs [n-hexane, toluene, chloroform, dichloromethane, methanol, and tetrahydrofuran (THE)]. Different responses were obtained upon exposure to all VOCs, THF gave the higher response while methanol the lower response. The influence of moisture on the measurements was also evaluated. The nonohmic electrical features of (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics, which have very strong gigantic dielectric is believed originate from potential barriers at the grain boundaries. In the present study, we used the admittance and impedance spectroscopy technique to investigate (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics with low nonohmic electrical properties. The study was conducted under two different conditions: on as-sintered ceramics and on ceramics thermally treated in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. The results confirm that thermal treatment in oxygen-rich atmospheres influence the nonohmic properties. Annealing at oxygen-rich atmospheres improve the nonohmic behavior and annealing at oxygen-poor atmospheres decrease the nonohmic properties, a behavior already reported for common metal oxide nonohmic devices and here firstly evidenced for the (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite related materials. The results show that oxygen also influences the capacitance values at low frequencies, a behavior that is indicative of the Schottky-type nature of the potential barrier.

Polycrystalline BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.8) thin films with a perovskite structure were prepared by the polymeric precursor method on a platinum-coated silicon substrate. High-quality thin films with uniform composition and thickness were successfully produced by dip-coating and spin-coating techniques. The resulting thin films prepared by dip and spin-coating showed a well-developed dense polycrystalline structure with uniform grain size distribution. The metal-BST-metal structure of the thin films displays good dielectric and ferroelectric properties. The ferroelectric nature to BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.8) thin film, indicated by butterfly-shaped C-V curves and confirmed by the hysteresis curve, showed 2P(r) = 5.0 muC/cm(2) and E-c = 20 kV/cm. The capacitance-frequency curve reveals that the dielectric constant may reach a value of up to 794 at 1 kHz. on the other hand, the BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4) thin films had paraelectric nature and dielectric constant and the dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 680 and 0.01, respectively, for film annealed at 700 degreesC. In addition, an examination of the film's I-V curve at room temperature revealed the presence of two conduction regions in the BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.8) thin films, showing ohmic-like behavior at low voltage and a Schottky-emission or Poole-Frenkel mechanism at high voltage. A description is given of the nonohmic behavior obtained in (SnxTi1-x)O-2-based systems. A matrix founded on (SnxTi1-x)O-2-based systems doped with Nb2O5 leads to a low-voltage varistor system with nonlinear coefficient values of similar to9. The presence of the back-to-back Schottky-type barrier is observed based on the voltage dependence of the capacitance. When doped with CoO, the (SnxTi1-x)O(2)(.)based system presents higher nonlinear coefficient values (>30) than does the SnO2-based varistor system.

Pristine, W and Mn 1% doped Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)TiO(3) epitaxial thin films grown on the LaAlO(3) substrate were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Dielectric and ferroelectric properties were determined by the capacitance measurements and X-ray diffraction was used to determine both residual elastic strains and defect-related inhomogeneous strains-by analyzing diffraction line shifts and line broadening, respectively. We found that both elastic and inhomogeneous strains are affected by doping. This strain correlates with the change in Curie-Weiss temperature and can qualitatively explain changes in dielectric loss. To explain the experimental findings, we model the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of interest in the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire thermodynamic theory. As expected, an, elastic-strain contribution due to the epilayer-substrate misfit has an important influence on the free-energy. However, additional terms that correspond to the defect-related inhomogeneous strain had to be introduced to fully explain the measurements.

The electric properties of the sodium niobate perovskite ceramic were investigated by impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 5 Hz to 13 MHz and from room temperature up to 1073 K, in a thermal cycle. Both capacitance and conductivity exhibit an anomaly at around 600 K as a function of the temperature and frequency. The electric conductivity as a function of angular frequency sigma(omega) follows the relation sigma(omega)=Aomega(s). The values of the exponent s lie in the range 0.15less than or equal tosless than or equal to0.44. These results were discussed considering the conduction mechanism as being a type of polaron hopping. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.
