Advantages of using nested collision induced dissociation/post-source decay with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry: sequencing of novel peptides from wasp venom

We have examined the applicability of the 'nested' collision induced dissociation/post-source decay (CID/PSD) method to the sequencing of novel peptides from solitary wasps which have neurotoxic venom for paralyzing other insects. The CID/PSD spectrum of a ladder peptide derived from an exopeptidase digest was compared with that of the intact peptide. The mass peaks observed only in the CID/PSD spectrum of a ladder peptide were extracted as C-terminal fragment ions. Assignment of C-terminal fragment ions enabled calculation of N-terminal fragment masses, leading to differentiation between N-terminal fragment ions and internal fragment ions. This methodology allowed rapid and sensitive identification by removing ambiguity in the assignment of the fragment ions, and proved useful for sequencing unknown peptides, in particular those available as natural products with a limited supply. CP trajectory diagram - a tool for a pictorial representation of CP and matter effects in neutrino oscillations

We introduce a CP trajectory diagram in bi-probability space as a powerful tool for a pictorial representation of the genuine CP and the matter effects in neutrino oscillations. The existence of correlated ambiguity in the B is uncovered. The principles of tuning the beam energy for a determination of CP-violating phase delta and the sign of Deltam(13)(2) given baseline distance are proposed to resolve the ambiguity and to maximize the CP-odd effect. We finally point out, quite contrary to what is usually believed, that the ambiguity may be resolved with similar to 50% chance in the super-JHF experiment despite its relatively short baseline of 300 km. Renormalized new solutions for the massless Thirring model

We present a nonperturbative study of the (1 + 1)-dimensional massless Thirring model by using path integral methods. The regularization ambiguities - coming from the computation of the fermionic determinant - allow to find new solution types for the model. At quantum level the Ward identity for the 1PI 2-point function for the fermionic current separates such solutions in two phases or sectors, the first one has a local gauge symmetry that is implemented at quantum level and the other one without this symmetry. The symmetric phase is a new solution which is unrelated to the previous studies of the model and, in the nonsymmetric phase there are solutions that for some values of the ambiguity parameter are related to well-known solutions of the model. We construct the Schwinger-Dyson equations and the Ward identities. We make a detailed analysis of their UV divergence structure and, after, we perform a nonperturbative regularization and renormalization of the model.

Mesonic correlation functions at finite temperature in the NJL model

We employ the NJL model to calculate mesonic correlation functions at finite temperature and compare results with recent lattice QCD simulations. We employ an implicit regularization scheme to deal with the divergent amplitudes to obtain ambiguity-free, scale-invariant and symmetry-preserving physical amplitudes. Making the coupling constants of the model temperature dependent, we show that at low momenta our results agree qualitatively with lattice simulations.

Predictive formulation of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

A novel strategy to handle divergences typical of perturbative calculations is implemented for the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and its phenomenological consequences investigated. The central idea of the method is to avoid the critical step involved in the regularization process, namely, the explicit evaluation of divergent integrals. This goal is achieved by assuming a regularization distribution in an implicit way and making use, in intermediary steps, only of very general properties of such regularization. The finite parts are separated from the divergent ones and integrated free from effects of the regularization. The divergent parts are organized in terms of standard objects, which are independent of the ( arbitrary) momenta running in internal lines of loop graphs. Through the analysis of symmetry relations, a set of properties for the divergent objects are identified, which we denominate consistency relations, reducing the number of divergent objects to only a few. The calculational strategy eliminates unphysical dependencies of the arbitrary choices for the routing of internal momenta, leading to ambiguity-free, and symmetry-preserving physical amplitudes. We show that the imposition of scale properties for the basic divergent objects leads to a critical condition for the constituent quark mass such that the remaining arbitrariness is removed. The model becomes predictive in the sense that its phenomenological consequences do not depend on possible choices made in intermediary steps. Numerical results are obtained for physical quantities at the one-loop level for the pion and sigma masses and pion-quark and sigma-quark coupling constants.

Marxismo e filosofia: algumas considerações sobre os textos políticos Merleau-Pontyanos do pós-guerra

A tentativa merleau-pontyana de aproximação do marxismo, empreendida nos idos do pós-guerra, é perpassada por constante ambigüidade. Não obstante o propósito do filósofo de se filiar à teoria de Marx, suas análises políticas revelam-se distantes de suas intenções. Concebendo a história como uma aventura que escapa a qualquer esquema racional, Merleau-Ponty questiona, desde seus primeiros escritos, a dialética marxista entre lógica e contingência na história. A tensão interna que dilacera os textos do autor nos anos 40, anunciando (e preparando) a recusa da teoria da revolução estampada mais tarde nas Aventuras da Dialética, permite indagar se esse desfecho dos anos 50 não teria sido, ao invés de um corte no interior da obra, o resultado necessário dessa tentativa problemática de aproximação do marxismo a partir de categorias que lhe são estranhas (próprias às filosofias da existência e à fenomenologia).

Ambigüidade gerada pela homonímia: revisitação teórica, linhas limítrofes com a polissemia e proposta de critérios distintivos

O presente trabalho almeja expor o fenômeno da homonímia no português do Brasil, enquanto ambigüidade presente em uma língua natural, por meio de uma revisitação teórica em diversos autores e em confronto com a polissemia. Ademais, pretende-se, além de redefinir conceitualmente a homonímia, propor critérios semânticos distintivos para esse fenômeno lingüístico, tais como a análise sêmica, o campo léxico, o uso de expressões cristalizadas e a ocorrência de traços especificadores.

Capacidade, dotação, talento, habilidades: uma sondagem da conceituação pelo ideário dos educadores

Embora o escopo deste trabalho seja de origem teórica, relata um estudo exploratório que busca situar a base de conceituação em Educação Especial para alunos Dotados e Talentosos, no Brasil, captando as definições compreendidas por profissionais da educação pela sondagem de sua opinião sobre que termos e expressões são usados, com que significados e em que situações. Os sujeitos incluíam 80 educadores interessados ou envolvidos na área (Grupo A) e 107 professores da rede pública no interior de São Paulo (Grupo B). Há poucas diferenças de opinião entre os sujeitos, nos dois grupos, com algumas exceções, principalente em questões relacionadas a nível de conhecimento e familiaridade com referencial teórico. Ambos os grupos indicam conceituação confusa, notadamente para os termos oficiais, superdotação e altas-habilidades; a maior carga de rejeição e exploração na mídia é alocada a superdotação. Os conceitos alta capacidade, alto desempenho e dotação são definidos em consonância com o referencial básico, que diferencia capacidade natural de capacidade adquirida; Talento reflete a ambiguidade encontrada na área, referindo-se, ao mesmo tempo, a capacidade natural e capacidade adquirida.

Os fios da trama: grandes temas da música popular tradicional brasileira

Nos cantos, danças e folguedos populares brasileiros, podemos encontrar um feixe de motivos entrelaçados, padrões multicores de um tecido de que conviria procurar e acompanhar cada um dos fios aí urdidos e tramados, agrupando-os segundo sua textura ou coloração. Essas diferentes linhas temáticas, os fios da trama das expressões artísticas e religiosas do povo brasileiro são o assunto deste artigo, que procura analisar formas culturais caracterizadas pela hibridação, as quais transitam muitas vezes na ambiguidade entre resistência e aceitação de um padrão cultural dominante. O dinamismo dos arranjos de um certo número de motivos condutores recorrentes no âmbito da cultura de tradição oral brasileira nos leva a especular sobre os processos de formação de suas práticas artísticas, bem como sobre sua circulação num país de dimensões continentais.

Condições e relações de trabalho no serviço público: o caso do governo Lula

Cet article a l'objectif de détailler les diverses initiatives du gouvernement Lula (2003-2010) par rapport à la mise en forme d'une politique de ressources humaines et, de cette façon, vérifier s'il y a eu une amélioration des conditions et relations de travail dans le secteur public brésilien. À partir des années 1990, et dans le sens contraire de la grande croissance de l'emploi public dans les six décennies précédentes, l'adhésion des gouvernements brésiliens aux principes du « Consensus de Washington » souligne le fonctionnalisme comme point fondamental dans l'agenda des réformes nécessaires à la reprise de la croissance économique. Ces gouvernements là se sont penchés sur le traitement de l'emploi public comme étant un problème fiscal et ont agi pour restreindre sa dimension. Simultanément, les conditions et relations de travail se sont présentées plus fragilisées (rendues évidentes par l'absence de réajustement de salaire; la croissance de formes variables de rémunération ; l'élargissement du cadre de travailleurs temporaires et externes, e avec l'attitude autoritaire devant la représentation syndicale). Avec une recherche documentaire et bibliographique, on pourra remarquer que la restructuration de nombreuses carrières, la reprise des concours, la création de la « Réunion Nationale de Négotiation Permanente », la réforme de la sécurité sociale et les réajustements selectifs des rémunérations manifestent l'ambiguïté comme une marque fondamentale des politiques de ressources humaines. Cela parce que, au même temps, les progrès des conditions de travail du serviteur public ont toujours été accompagnés par l'entretien d'une partie de l'agenda conservatrice des années 1990, surtout par rapport à la reproduction de limites fiscaux rigoureux.

What is wrong with Pauli-Villars regularization in QED(3)?

In this paper we argue that there is no ambiguity between the Pauli-Villars and other methods of regularization in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with respect to dynamical mass generation, provided we properly choose the couplings for the regulators.
