This article reports the survey findings of a recent study on users’ views of the service provided by an outreaching social work team in Hong Kong. It attempts to explore how youth at risk can be jointly involved in evaluating the quality of the social service. Users appear to have favourable opinions towards the service received and would like to have greater involvement in programme planning, implementation and evaluation. Finally, recommendations on improving the understanding of the needs of users and encouraging greater user participation in future service delivery are suggested.

Strong evidence obtained from in vivo and ex-vivo studies suggests the existence of interaction between dopaminergic and nitrergic systems. Some of the observations suggest a possible implication of nitric oxide (NO) in dopamine (DA) uptake mechanism. The present work investigated the interaction between both systems by examining the effect of an NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), associated with the indirect DA agonist, amphetamine (AMPH) on tritiated DA uptake in cultures of embryonic mesencephalic neurons. Consistent with the literature, both AMPH (1, 3 and 10 mu M) and SNP (300 mu M and 1 mM) inhibited DA uptake in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the inhibition of DA uptake by AMPH (1 and 3 mu M) was significantly increased by the previous addition of SNP (300 mu M). The implication of NO in this interaction was supported by the fact that the free radical scavenger N-acetyl-L-Cysteine (500 mu M) significantly increased DA uptake and completely abolished the effect of SNP, leaving unaffected that from AMPH on DA uptake. Further, double-labeling immunohistochemistry showed the presence of tyrosine hydroxylase-(TH, marker for dopaminergic neurons) and neuronal NO synthase- (nNOS, marker for NO containing neurons) expressing neurons in mesencephalic cultures. Some dopaminergic neurons also express nNOS giving further support for a pre-synaptic interaction between both systems. This is the first work demonstrating in mesencephalic cultured neurons a combined effect of an NO donor and an indirect DA agonist on specific DA uptake. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article investigates the researcher's work in the coproduction (or not) of complaint sequences in research interviews. Using a conversation analytic approach, we show how the interviewer's management of complaint sequences in a research setting is consequential for subsequent talk and thus directly affects the data generated. In the examples shown here, researchers sharing cocategorial incumbency with respondents may well provide spaces for research participants to formulate complaints. This article examines sequences of talk surrounding complaints to show how researchers generate complaints (or not) and handle unsafe complaints. Researchers are able to provoke specific types of accounts from respondents, whereas their respondents may actively resist the researchers' direction. For researchers using the interview as a method of data generation, examination of complaint sequences and how these appear in interview data provides insight into how interview talk is coproduced and managed within a socially situated setting.

The mm of this work was to evaluate the biocompatibility of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/barium titanate (P(VDF-TrFE)/BT) membrane to be used in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) Fibroblasts from human periodontal ligament (hPDLF) and keratinocytes (SCC9) were plated on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT and polytetrafluorethylene membranes at a cell density of 20.000 cells well(-1) and Cultured for up to 21 days Cell morphology, adhesion and proliferation were evaluated in hPDLF and keratinocytes, while total protein content and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were assayed only for hPDLF Using a higher cell density. real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to assess the expression of typical genes of hPDLF, such as periostin, PDLs17, S100A4 and fibromodulin, and key phenotypic markers of keratinocytes, including involucrin, keratins 1. 10 and 14 Expression of the apoptotic genes bax, bcl-2 and Survivin was evaluated for both cultures hPDLF adhered and spread more oil P(VDF-TrFE)/BT, whereas keratinocytes showed a round shape on both membranes. hPDLF adhesion was greater oil P(VDF-TrFE)/BT at 2 and 4 h, while keratinocyte adhesion was similar for both membranes. Whereas proliferation was significantly higher for hPDLF on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT at days 1 and 7. no signs of keratinocyte proliferation could be noticed for both membranes Total protein content was greater on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT at 7, 14 and 21 days, and higher levels of ALP activity were observed oil P(VDF-TrFE)/BT at 21 days. Real-time PCR revealed higher expression of phenotypic markers of hPDLF and keratinocytes as well as greater expression of apoptotic genes in cultures grown on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT. These results indicate that, by favoring hPDLF adhesion. spreading. proliferation and typical mRNA expression, P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane should be considered an advantageous alternative for GTR (C) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc Published by Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) is a polymer of great technological interest, whose excellent mechanical properties, thermal plasticity and bioresorbability render it potentially useful for environmental applications, as a biodegradable plastic and as a biocompatible material in biomedicine. The interactions between an implant material surface and host cells play central roles in the integration, biological performance and clinical success of implanted biomedical devices. Osteoblasts from human alveolar bone were chosen to investigate the cell behaviour when in contact with PLA discs. Cell morphology and adhesion through osteopontin (OPN) and fibronectin (FN) expression were evaluated in the initial osteogenesis, as well as cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity and bone nodule formation. It was shown that the polymer favoured cell attachment. Cell proliferation increased until 21 days but in a smaller rate when compared to the control group. On the other hand, ALP activity and bone mineralization were not enhanced by the polymer. It is suggested that this polymer favours cell adhesion in the early osteogenesis in vitro, but it does not enhance differentiation and mineralization. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2009

This study examines whether dissimilarity among employees that is based on their work status (i.e., whether they are temporary or internal workers) influences their organization-based self-esteem, their trust in and attraction toward their peers, and their altruism. A model that is based on social identity theory posits that work-status dissimilarity negatively influences each outcome variable and that the strength of this relationship varies depending on whether employees have temporary or internal status and the composition of their work groups. Results that are based on a survey of 326 employees (189 internal and 137 temporary) from 34 work groups, belonging to 2 organizations, indicate that work-status dissimilarity has a systematic negative effect only on outcomes related to internal workers when they work in temporary-worker-dominated groups.

Impulsivity based on Gray's [Gray, J. A. (1982) The neuropsychology of anxiety: an enquiry into the function of the septo-hippocampal system. New York: Oxford University Press: (1991). The neurophysiology of temperament. In J. Strelau & A. Angleitner. Explorations in temperament: international perspectives on theory and measurement. London. Plenum Press]. physiological model of personality was hypothesised to be more predictive of goal oriented criteria within the workplace than scales derived From Eysenck's [Eysenck. H.J. (1967). The biological basis of personality. Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thompson.] physiological model of personality. Results confirmed the hypothesis and also showed that Gray's scale of Impulsivity was generally a better predictor than attributional style and interest in money. Results were interpreted as providing support for Gray's Behavioural Activation System which moderates response to reward. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In social science the 'national' has been studied extensively, but comparatively little attention has been given to the 'un-national'. The article takes up this challenge in an Australian context. Drawing on the work of Raymond Williams, investigation is centred around the keyword 'UnAustralian'. Participants in focus groups were asked to nominate and account for what they thought of as 'UnAustralian' people, places, values, activities, groups and organizations. Analysis of the data revealed that two factors underpinned an attribution: incivility and foreign influence. Contemporary uses revolve around outcomes from globalization and can be contrasted with the centrality of class politics to deployments of the concept in the first part of the 20th century.
