Silver is well known to show peculiar catalytic activities in several oxidation reactions. In the present paper, we investigate the catalytic activity of silver catalysts toward CO-gelective oxidation in H-2. XRD, TEM, TPD, and in situ FTIR techniques were used to characterize the catalysts. The pretreatment of the catalysts was found to have great influence on their performance. The pretreatment in 02 improves the activity of the silver catalyst, whereas He pretreatment at 700 degreesC or direct hydrogen pretreatment shows an inverse effect. Silver catalysts undergo massive structural change during oxygen pretreatment at high temperatures (> 500 degreesC), and there is solid evidence for the formation of subsurface oxygen species. The existence of this silver-subsurface oxygen structure facilitates the formation of active sites on silver catalysts for CO oxidation, which are related to the size, morphology, and exposed crystal planes of the silver particles. Its formation requires a certain temperature, and a higher pretreatment temperature with oxygen is required for the silver catalyst with a smaller particle size. It is observed, for the first time, that adsorbed CO on the surface of silver particles can directly react with subsurface oxygen species at low temperatures (e.g., RT), and the surface oxygen can migrate into and refill these subsurface sites after the consumption of subsurface oxygen by the reaction with CO. This finding provides a new reaction pathway for CO oxidation on silver catalyst. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier Inc.

The silver catalyzed, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by CH4, is shown to be a structure-sensitive reaction. Pretreatment has a great affect on the catalytic performances. Upon thermal treatment in inert gas stream, thermal induced changes in silver morphology lead to the formation of reduced silver species of clusters and particles. Catalysis over this catalyst indicates an initially higher activity but lower selectivity for the CH4-SCR of NOx Reaction induced restructuring of silver results in the formation of ill-defined silver oxides. This, in turn, impacts the adsorption properties and diffusivity of oxygen over silver catalyst, results in the decrease in activity but increase in selectivity of Ag-H-ZSM-5 catalyst for the CH4-SCR of NO.. HSAPO-34 molecular sieve was employed in chloromethane conversion and showed high performance in activity and selectivity in production of light olefins. Our detailed IR investigation allowed the identification of the active sites and the adsorbed species and demonstrated that the conversion started from 350 degrees C with alkoxy group as the intermediate. The fixed-bed catalytic testing evidenced that in the range of 350-500 degrees C, 70-80% of chloromethane was transferred to ethylene, propylene and butenes. Increasing reaction temperature favors the conversion and enhances the yield of lighter olefins. A very important reversible phenomenon, the breaking of Al-O-P bonds upon adsorption of HCl, a main product of reaction to generate a large amount of P-OH groups and the recovery of Al-O-P upon removal of HCI was revealed. A new mesoporous sphere-like SBA-15 silica was synthesized and evaluated in terms of its suitability as stationary phases for CEC. The unique and attractive properties of the silica particle are its submicrometer particle size of 400 nm and highly ordered cylindrical mesopores with uniform pore size of 12 nm running along the same direction. The bare silica particles with submicrometer size have been successfully employed for the normal-phase electrochromatographic separation of polar compounds with high efficiency (e.g., 210 000 for thiourea), which is matched well with its submicrometer particle size. The Van Deemeter plot showed the hindrance to mass transfer because of the existence of pore structure. The lowest plate height of 2.0 mu m was obtained at the linear velocity of 1.1 mm/s. On the other hand, because of the relatively high linear velocity (e.g., 4.0 mm/s) can be generated, high-speed separation of neutral compounds, anilines, and basic pharmaceuticals in CEC with C-18-modified SBA-15 silica as stationary phases was achieved within 36, 60, and 34 s, respectively.

A new continuous configuration time-dependent self-consistent field method has been developed to study polyatomic dynamical problems by using the discrete variable representation for the reaction system, and applied to a reaction system coupled to a bath. The method is very efficient because the equations involved are as simple as those in the traditional single configuration approach, and can account for the correlations between the reaction system and bath modes rather well. This paper is a concise explanation of the normative background to strength grading in Europe, addressing important aspects that are commonly misunderstood by structural engineers and timber researchers. It also highlights changes that are being made to the standards to: incorporate requirements of the construction products regulations; add improvements to the system to accommodate the latest knowledge and technology; and widen the application of the standards. Where designs need to be optimised, there is an opportunity to use the system more intelligently, in combination with the latest technology, to better fit design values to the true properties of the timber resource. This can bring a design enhancement equivalent to effort improving other aspects of the structure, such as connectors and reinforcement. Parallel to this, researchers working on other aspects of structural improvement need to understand what grades really mean in respect of the properties of the timber, in order to correctly analyse the results of testing. It is also useful to know how techniques used in grading can assist with material properties characterisation for research. The amount of destructive testing involved in establishing machine grading settings and visual grading assignments presents a barrier to greater use of local timber, and diversification of commercial species, so it is important that any researcher assessing the properties of such species should consider, from the outset, doing the research in a way that can contribute to a grading dataset at a later date. This paper provides an overview of what is required for this.
