Activated carbon as catalyst support was treated with HCl, HNO3, and HF and the effects of acid treatments on the properties of the activated carbon support were studied by N-2 adsorption, mass titration, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). Ni catalysts supported on untreated and treated activated carbons were prepared, characterized and tested for the reforming reaction of methane with carbon dioxide. It is found that acid treatment significantly changed the surface chemical properties and pore structure of the activated carbon. The surface area and pore volume of the carbon supports are generally enhanced upon acid treatment due to the removal of impurities present in the carbon. The adsorption capacity of Ni2+ on the carbon supports is also increased, and the increase can be closely correlated with the surface acidity. The impregnation of nickel salts decreases the surface area and pore volume of carbon supports both in micropores and mesopores. Acid treatment results in a more homogeneous distribution of the nickel salt in carbon. When the impregnated carbons are heated in inert atmosphere, there exists a redox reaction between nickel oxide and the carbon. Catalytic activity tests for methane reforming with carbon dioxide show that the activity of nickel catalysts based on the acid-treated carbon supports is closely related with the surface characteristics of catalysts. We describe a search for compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the FLAIR spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We measured radial velocities of 453 compact galaxies brighter than B-T approximate to 17.3 and found seven new compact dwarf cluster members that were not classified in previous surveys as members of the cluster. These are amongst the most compact, high surface brightness dwarf galaxies known. The inclusion of these galaxies in the cluster does not change the total luminosity function significantly, but they are important because of their extreme nature; one in particular appears to be a dwarf spiral. Three of the new dwarfs have strong emission lines and we identify them as blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), doubling the number of confirmed BCDs in the cluster. We also determined that none of the compact dwarf elliptical (M32-like) candidates is in the cluster, down to an absolute magnitude M-B = -13.2. We have investigated the claim of Irwin et al. that there is no strong relation between surface brightness and magnitude for the cluster members and find some support for this for the brighter galaxies (B-T < 17.3), but fainter galaxies still need to be measured.

Objectives: To test the effectiveness, in the setting of primary health care, of verbal advice on exercise from a family physician (FP) combined with supporting written information. Design: A controlled trial with subjects allocated to a control group or one of two intervention groups using a balanced design based on day of the week. Setting: Ten general practices in Perth, Western Australia. Subjects: All sedentary patients consulting an FP. Intervention: Verbal advice on exercise from the FP and a pamphlet on exercise mailed to the patient's home address within 2 days of his/her visit to the doctor. Main outcome measure: Level of physical activity at followup. Results: 6,351 adult patients attending an FP practice completed a screening questionnaire, and 763 sedentary adults were recruited to the project. The response to follow-up, via a postal survey at 1, 6, and 12 months after the index consultation was 70%, 60%, and 57%, respectively. At 1 month a subsample of the control and intervention subjects were contacted for a telephone interview to verify self-reported levels of activity (n = 136). Treating all nonresponders as sedentary, at 1 month significantly more subjects in the combined intervention groups reported doing some physical activity (40%) compared with the control group (31%). Similarly, at 6 months, 30% of the control group and 38% of the combined intervention groups were now active. There was very little change at followup at 12 months (31% control and 36% intervention groups, respectively). Conclusion: A simple intervention aimed at the promotion of physical activity to sedentary patients in general practice can help reduce inactivity.

The task of segmenting cell nuclei from cytoplasm in conventional Papanicolaou (Pap) stained cervical cell images is a classical image analysis problem which may prove to be crucial to the development of successful systems which automate the analysis of Pap smears for detection of cancer of the cervix. Although simple thresholding techniques will extract the nucleus in some cases, accurate unsupervised segmentation of very large image databases is elusive. Conventional active contour models as introduced by Kass, Witkin and Terzopoulos (1988) offer a number of advantages in this application, but suffer from the well-known drawbacks of initialisation and minimisation. Here we show that a Viterbi search-based dual active contour algorithm is able to overcome many of these problems and achieve over 99% accurate segmentation on a database of 20 130 Pap stained cell images. Background. A sustainable pattern of participation in physical activity is important in the maintenance of health and prevention of disease, College students are in transition from an active youth to a more sedentary adult behavior pattern. Methods. We assessed self-reported physical activity and other characteristics in a sample of 2,729 male and female students (median age was 20 years) recruited from representative courses and year levels at four Australian College campuses. They were categorized as sufficiently or insufficiently active, using estimates of energy expenditure (kcal/week) derived from self-reported physical activity, Personal factors (self-efficacy, job status, enjoyment), social factors (social support from family/friends), and environmental factors (awareness of facilities, gym membership) were also assessed. Results. Forty-seven percent of females and 32% of males were insufficiently active. For females, the significant independent predictors of being insufficiently active were lower social support from family and friends, lower enjoyment of activity, and not working. For males, predictors were lower social support from family and friends, lower enjoyment of activity, and being older. Conclusions. Factors associated with physical activity participation (particularly social support from family and friends) can inform physical activity strategies directed at young adults in the college setting. The effect of trace additions of magnesium on the sintering of aluminum and its alloys is examined. Magnesium, especially at low concentrations, has a disproportionate effect on sintering because it disrupts the passivating Al2O3 layer through the formation of a spinel phase. Magnesium penetrates the sintering compact by solid-state diffusion, and the oxide is reduced at the metal-oxide interface. This facilitates solid-state sintering, as well as wetting of the underlying metal by sintering liquids, when these are present. The optimum magnesium concentration is approximately 0.1 to 1.0 wt pet, but this is dependent on the volume of oxide and, hence, the particle size, as well as the sintering conditions. Small particle-size fractions require proportionally more magnesium than large-size fractions do.

The high affinity receptor for human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) consists of a cytokine-specific alpha-subunit (hGMR alpha) and a common signal-transducing beta-subunit (hpc) that is shared with the interleukin-3 and -5 receptors, We have previously identified a constitutively active extracellular point mutant of hpc, I374N, that can confer factor independence on murine FDC-P1 cells but not BAF-B03 or CTLL-2 cells (Jenkins, B. J., D'Andrea, R. J., and Gonda, T. J. (1995) EMBO J. 14, 4276-4287), This restricted activity suggested the involvement of cell type-specific signaling molecules in the activation of this mutant. We report here that one such molecule is the mouse GMR alpha (mGMR alpha) subunit, since introduction of mGMR alpha, but not hGMR alpha, into BAF-B03 or CTLL-2 cells expressing the I374N mutant conferred factor independence, Experiments utilizing mouse/human chimeric GMR alpha subunits indicated that the species specificity lies in the extracellular domain of GMRa. Importantly, the requirement for mGMR alpha correlated with the ability of I374N (but not wild-type hpc) to constitutively associate with mGMRa. Expression of I374N in human factor-dependent UT7 cells also led to factor-independent proliferation, with concomitant up-regulation of hGMR alpha surface expression. Taken together, these findings suggest a critical role for association with GMR alpha in the constitutive activity of I374N.

Carbon dioxide reforming of methane into syngas over Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts was systematically studied. Effects of reaction parameters on catalytic activity and carbon deposition over Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were investigated. It is found that reduced NiA1204, metal nickel, and active species of carbon deposited were the active sites for this reaction. Carbon deposition on Ni/gamma Al2O3 varied depending on the nickel loading and reaction temperature and is the major cause of catalyst deactivation. Higher nickel loading produced more coke on the catalysts, resulting in rapid deactivation and plugging of the reactor. At 5 wt % Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited high activity and much lesser magnitude of deactivation in 140 h. Characterization of carbon deposits on the catalyst surface revealed that there are two kinds of carbon species (oxidized and -C-C-) formed during the reaction and they showed different reactivities toward hydrogenation and oxidation. Kinetic studies showed that the activation energy for CO production in this reaction amounted to 80 kJ/mol and the rate of CO production could be described by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood model.

We derive a nonlinear wave equation for a signal beam which is coupled to a pump beam by two-wave-mixing in a photorefractive crystal. This equation describes self-focusing of the signal beam. We compare two-wave-mixing induced spatial self-focusing of single-pass experiments in a diffusion-type photorefractive crystal and of a photorefractive oscillator using the same crystal. We observe that the nonlinear refractive index change in the oscillator is decreased while increasing resonator losses.

Catalytic conversion of N2O to N-2 With potassium catalysts supported on activated carbon (K/AC) was investigated. Potassium proves to be much more active and stable than either copper or cobalt because potassium possesses strong abilities both for N2O chemisorption and oxygen transfer. Potassium redispersion is found to play a critical role in influencing the catalyst stability. A detailed study of the reaction mechanism was conducted based upon three different catalyst loadings. It was found that during temperature-programmed reaction (TPR), the negative oxygen balance at low temperatures (< 50 degrees C) is due to the oxidation of the external surface of potassium oxide particles, while the bulk oxidation accounts for the oxygen accumulation at higher temperatures (below ca. 270 degrees C). N2O is beneficial for the removal of carbon-oxygen complexes because of the formation of CO2 instead of CO and because of its role in making the chemisorption of produced CO2 on potassium oxide particles less stable. A conceptual three-zone model was proposed to clarify the reaction mechanism over K/AC catalysts. CO2 chemisorption at 250 degrees C proves to be an effective measurement of potassium dispersion. The macrocyclic cobalt hexaamines [Co(trans-diammac)](3+) and [Co(cis-diammac)](3+) (diammac = 6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine) are capable of reducing the overpotential for hydrogen evolution on a mercury cathode in aqueous solution. Protons are reduced in a catalytic process involving reoxidation of the Co-II species to its parent Co-III complex. The cycle is robust at neutral pH with no decomposition of catalyst. The stability of the [Co(trans-diammac)](2+) and [Co(cis-diammac)](2+) complexes depends on the pH of the solution and the coordinating properties of the supporting electrolyte. Electrochemical studies indicate that the adsorbed Co-II complex on the surface of mercury is the active catalyst for the reduction of protons to dihydrogen.

Proteins are often regulated by allosteric mechanisms, in which effecters bind to regulatory sites distinct from the active sites and alter protein function. Intrasteric regulation, directed at the active site and thus the counterpart of allosteric control, is now emerging as an important regulatory mechanism.

Several activating mutations have recently been described in the common beta subunit for the human interleukin(IL)-3, IL-5, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) receptors (h beta c), Two of these, FI Delta and 1374N, result, respectively, in a 37-amino acid duplication and an isoleucine-to-asparagine substitution in the extracellular domain. A third, V449E, leads to valine-to-glutamic acid substitution in the transmembrane domain. Previous studies have shown that when expressed in murine hemopoietic cells in vitro, the extracellular mutants can confer factor independence on only the granulocyte-macrophage lineage while the transmembrane mutant can do so to all cell types of the myeloid and erythroid compartments. To further study the signaling properties of the constitutively active hpc mutants, we have used novel murine hemopoietic cell lines, which we describe in this report. These lines, FDB1 and FDB2, proliferate in murine IL-3 and undergo granulocyte-macrophage differentiation in response to murine GM-CSF, We find that while the transmembrane mutant, V449E, confers factor-independent proliferation on these cell lines, the extracellular hpc mutants promote differentiation. Hence, in addition to their ability to confer factor independence on distinct cell types, transmembrane and extracellular activated h beta c mutants deliver distinct signals to the same cell type. Thus, the FDB cell lines, in combination with activated h beta c mutants, constitute a powerful new system to distinguish between signals that determine hemopoietic proliferation or differentiation. The purpose of the present investigation was to gain an understanding of the nature of the carbon contamination on the surface of standard steel transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) specimens, the effect of exposure of a clean specimen to normal laboratory air, and the efficacy of plasma-cleaning treatments. This knowledge is a necessary prerequisite to the development of appropriate specimen preparation and/or specimen cleaning methods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with argon ion beam profiling was used to characterize the specimen surfaces of X65 steel and 316 stainless steel. The only clean carbon-free surface obtained was that during argon etching of the sample in the surface analysis chamber. Any exposure of a previously cleaned sample to laboratory air resulted in a rapid carbon (hydrocarbon) contamination of the sample surface and the development of surface oxidation, Plasma cleaning with subsequent exposure of the specimen to the laboratory air also resulted in a carbon-contaminated surface. This suggests that procedures of preparation of TEM specimens of steels outside an ultrahigh vacuum chamber are unlikely to result in the lowering of contamination rates on specimens to levels where measurements for carbon in the grain boundaries are possible. What is needed is a cleaning system as an integral part of the specimen insertion system into the field-emission scanning transmission electron microscope.
