Highly dispersed nanocomposites of polyaniline(PANI) and oxidized single wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) have been prepared using dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as dispersant. The materials were characterized via resonance Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The behavior of the composites as a function of the applied potential was also investigated using in situ Raman electrochemical measurements. The results obtained at E(laser) = 1.17 eV suggest that a charge-transfer process occur between PANI and semiconducting nanotubes for samples where the metallic tubes are previously oxidized. The spectroelectrochemical data show that the presence of SWNTs prevents the oxidation of PANI rings. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The Raman band assigned to the nu(C=O)mode in N,N-dimethylformamide (at ca. 1660 cm(-1)) was used as a probe to study a group of ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C(n)Mlm]Br) with different alkyl groups (n = 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 carbons) in binary equimolar binary mixtures with dimethylformamide. Due to the high electric dipole moment of the group C=O, there is a substantial coupling between adjacent molecules in the solution, and the corresponding Raman band involves both vibrational and reorientational modes. Different chain lengths of the ILs lead to different extents of the uncoupling of adjacent molecules of dimethylformamide, resulting in different shifts for this band in the mixtures. Information about the organization of ionic liquids in solution was obtained and a model of aggregation for these systems is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Raman spectroscopy (RS) was used to determine the crystallinity of lactose (a commonly used carrier in dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulations). Samples of α-lactose monohydrate and amorphous lactose were prepared using ethanol precipitation and lyophilisation respectively. The anomeric forms were confirmed using DSC at a rate of 10 °C/min and heated to 250 °C. The Raman spectra of both α-lactose monohydrate and amorphous lactose were obtained. Distinguishable differences were seen between the two spectra including peak areas and intensities. Depolarisation ratios (ρ) of each form were then determined to identify the crystallinity of the lactose carrier samples. At the prominent Raman bands 865 and 1082 cm−1, significant differences in ρ values were observed for crystalline (0.80 ± 0.07, 0.89 ± 0.06 respectively) and amorphous samples (0.44 ± 0.07, 0.51 ± 0.10).

Advanced polymeric materials and their respective composites are fast becoming one of the world's most frequently used engineering materials. They find application in the manufacture of e.g. boat hulls, high performance motor vehicles, aircraft components and sports goods. Their high specific strength and specific stiffness give them the edge in applications where weight savings are critical, but their long-term durability is often questioned. These materials are susceptible to environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. There is also a lack of relevant data, due to the long time-scales required for testing. In this study, the Raman technique has been used to monitor the degradation of two composite systems, namely: a rubber toughened vinylester material used in the marine industry and a high temperature bismaleimide/carbon fibre aerospace composite. Preliminary Raman studies show that the toughening rubber particles dispersed in the cured vinylester resin are leached out during hygrothermal ageing. The weight gain during ageing suggests that this leaching process occurs concurrently with the absorption of water molecules. An increase in the degree of cross-linking is observed when bismaleimide/carbon fibre composite is aged at high temperature. This cross- linking tendency decreases with increasing depth within the carbon fibre bundle.

This paper introduces a method of modeling noninvasive glucose sensing for patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus. The proposed technique involves simulation of light propagation through biological tissue with an embedded photonic crystal. The proposed detection technique is Raman spectroscopy and the use of the photonic crystal enables the enhancement of Raman scattering by engineering the photon density of states. Further enhancement can be achieved using noble metal clusters which result in surface enhanced Raman scattering and has the ability to provide enhancements of up to a million times.

A microfluidic dielectrophoresis platform consisting of curved microelectrodes was developed and integrated with a Raman spectroscopy system. The electrodes were patterned on a quartz substrate, which has insignificant Raman response, and integrated with a microfluidic channel that was imprinted in poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We will show that this novel integrated system can be efficiently used for the determination of suspended particle types and the direct mapping of their spatial concentrations. We will also illustrate the system's unique advantages over conventional optical systems. Nanoparticles of tungsten trioxide (WO3) and polystyrene were used in the investigations, as they are Raman active and can be homogeneously suspended in water.

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) utilizing a curved microelectrode pattern was developed and integrated with a Raman spectroscopy system. The electrodes were patterned on a Raman transparent quartz substrate, and integrated with a microfluidic channel in poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This integrated system can be efficiently used for the determination of suspended particles type and the direct mapping of their spatial concentrations. It will be demonstrated that the integration of Raman mapping with dielectrophoretically controlled WO3 particles can be used for studying suspended particles in situ.

Time-resolved extinction spectra assisted with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed to investigate the interaction between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and metal nanoparticles (NPs). A series of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectra of metal NPs were measured just after a small amount of BSA was added into metal colloids. Through 2DCOS analysis, remarkable changes in the intensities of the LSPR were observed. The interaction process was totally divided into three periods according to the PCA. Transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and ζ-potential measurements were also employed to characterize the interaction between BSA and metal NPs. The addition of BSA brings silver NPs to aggregate through the electrostatic interaction between them, but it has less effect on gold NPs. In a gold and silver mixed system, gold NPs can affect the interaction of silver NPs and BSA, leading it to weaken. The combination of 2DCOS analysis and LSPR spectroscopy is powerful for exploring the LSPR spectra of the metal NP involved systems. This combined technique holds great potential in LSPR sensing through analysis of slight, slim spectral changes of metal colloids

Near-infrared Raman spectroscopy (NIRS) is a particularly promising technique that is being used in recent years for many biomedical applications. Optical spectroscopy has gained increasing prominence as a tool for quantitative analysis of biological samples, clinical diagnostic, concentration measurements of blood metabolites and therapeutic drugs, and analysis of the chemical composition of human tissues. Toxoplasmosis is an important zoonosis in public health, and domestic cats are the most important transmitters of the disease. This disease can be detected by several serological tests, which usually have a high cost and require a long time. The goal of this work was to investigate a new method to diagnosis Toxoplasma gondii infections using NIRS. In order to confirm antibody detection, 24 cat blood scrum samples were analyzed by the Raman spectra, from which 23 presented positive serology to toxoplasmosis and one was a reference negative serum. Characteristic Raman peaks allowed differentiation between negative and positive sera, confirming the possibility of antibody detection by Raman spectroscopy. These results give the first evidence that this technique can be useful to quantify antibodies in cat sera.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a ruthenium complex mer-[RuCl3 (dppb)(4-Mepy)] (dppb = PPh2 (CH2)(4)-PPh2; 4-Mepy = 4-methylpyridine), termed Ru-Pic, display a distinct color, which is different from the coloration exhibited by cast films or chloroform solutions. The solution and cast films are red, while the LB films are green-bluish. The manifestation of the blue color in the LB film finds its explanation in a unique absorption band at 690 nm, which is associated with the oxidation of the phosphine moieties. Fluorescence emission and absorption-reflection infrared spectroscopy measurements revealed the molecular organization in the LB films. In contrast, cast films showed a random distribution of complexes. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering was also used in an attempt to identify the main interactions in Ru-Pic.
