X-ray crystal structures of 2,2',3,3'-and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2',3,3'- and 3,3',4,4'-BPDA) were determined. The dianhydride isomers have different symmetry caused by difference in two anhydride group positions and the dihedral angles between the two phenyl rings are 62.9 degrees for 2,2',3,3',-BPDA and 0 degrees for 3,3',4,4'-BPDA respectively. The polyimides from 2,2',3,3'-BPDA exhibit enhanced solubility, higher thermal stability, and higher glass transition temperature (T-g) compared with those from 3,3',4,4'-BPDA.

Poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) copolymers (P(VAc-co-VA)) were synthesized by hydrolysis-alcoholysis of PVAc. The miscibility, crystallization, and morphology of poly(P-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and P(VAc-co-VA) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy (OM), and SAXS. It is found that the P(VAc-co-VA)s with vinyl alcohol content of 9, 15, and 22 mol % will form a miscible phase with the amorphous part of PHB in the solution-cast samples. The melting-quenched samples of PHB/P(VAc-co-VA) blends with different vinyl alcohol content show different phase behavior. PHB and P(VAc-co-VA9) with low vinyl alcohol content (9% mel) will form a miscible blend in the melt state. PHB and P(VAc-co-VA15) with 15 mol % vinyl alcohol will not form miscible blends while PHB/P(VAc-co-VA15) blend with 20/80 composition will form a partially miscible blend in the melt state. PHB and P(VAc-co-VA22) with 22 mol % vinyl alcohol are not miscible in the whole composition range. The single glass transition temperature of the blends within the whole composition range suggests that PHB and P(VAc-co-VA9) are totally miscible in the melt. The crystallization kinetics was studied from the whole crystallization and spherulite growth for the miscible blends. The equilibrium melting point of PHB in the PHB/P(VAc-co-VA9) blends, which was obtained from DSC results using the Hoffman-Weeks equation, decreases with the increase in P(VAc-co-VA9) content. The negative value of the interaction parameter determined from the equilibrium melting point depression supports the miscibility between the components. The kinetics of spherulitic crystallization of PHB in the blends was analyzed according to nucleation theory in the temperature range studied in this work. The best fit of the data to the kinetic theory is obtained by employing WLF parameters and the equilibrium melting points obtained by DSC. The addition of P(VAc-co-VA) did not affect the crystalline structure of PHB, as shown by the WAXD results. The long periods of blends obtained from SAXS increase with the increase in P(VAc-co-VA) content. It indicates that the amorphous P(VAc-co-VA) was rejected to interlamellar phase corporating with the amorphous part of PHB.

Physical aging of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) was investigated. Heat flow responses were measured after annealing the amorphous samples that were obtained by quenching the melt into an ice-water bath at just below the glass transition temperature. Isothermal cold crystallization of the aged samples was carried out. The Avrami equation was used to determine the kinetic parameters, and the Avrami constant it is about 2. An Arrhenius form was used to evaluate the relaxation activation energy of physical aging and the transport activation energy of isothermal crystallization. The activation energy of physical aging was similar in magnitude to that observed for the temperature dependence of crystallization under conditions of transportation control. Results obtained were interpreted as purely kinetic effects associated with the glass formation process. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Miscibility and crystallization behavior of solution-blended poly(ether ether ketone)/polyimide (PEEK/PI) blends were investigated by using DSC, optical microscopy and SAXS methods. Two kinds of PIs, YS-30 and PEI-E, which consist of the same diamine but different dianhydrides, were used in this work. The experimental results show that blends of PEEK/YS-30 are miscible over the entire composition range, as all the blends of different compositions exhibit a single glass transition temperature. The crystallization of PEEK was hindered by YS-30 in PEEK/YS-30 blends, of which the dominant morphology is interlamellar. On the other hand, blends of PEEK/PEI-E are immiscible, and the effect of PEI-E on the crystallization behavior of PEEK is weak. The crystallinity of PEEK in the isothermally crystallized PEEK/YS-30 blend specimens decreases with the increase in PI content. But the crystallinity of PEEK in the annealed samples almost keeps unchanged and reaches its maximum value, which is more than 50%. The spherulitic texture of the blends depends on both the blend composition and the molecular structure of the PIs used. The more PI added, the more imperfect the crystalline structure of PEEK. Isothermal crystallization and melting behavior of nylon 66 and its blends with poly(ether imide) (PEI) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Crystallization kinetics such as overall rate constant Z and index n were calculated according to Avrami approach. Crystallization in the blend was retarded with respect to that of pure nylon 66 by incorporation of PEI with high glass transition temperature (T-g). The lowest growth rate of the spherulites was observed in the blends containing 10 and 15 wt% fraction of PEI. A transition temperature where positively birefringent spherulites disappear and negative birefringent spherulites develop was measured by thermal analysis. The transition temperature increased with content of PEI in the blends. A suitable range of isothermally crystallization temperatures, 238.5-246 degrees C, is suggested For determining the equilibrium melting points by means of Hoffman-Weeks approach.

A comb-like polymer host(CBPE) as polymer electrolyte was synthesized by reacting poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer(EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The synthetic process was followed by IR and the amorphous product characterized by IR and elemental analysis. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log sigma vs. 1/(T - T-0) may exhibit dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T-0. The comb-like polymer is a white rubbery solid which dissolves in acetone. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The poly(monoester (6-[4-(p-nitrophenyl) azo]phenoxy-1-hexyloxy) of maleic anhydride) shows a smectic phase with a focal conic fan texture. With the decrease of the monoestering degree the phase transition temperature decreases and the mesomorphic temperature range becomes narrow. The hydrogen bonding between two carboxylic acid groups was found to play a very important role in forming the smectic phase structure. The smectic bilayer structure has been built through self-assembly via. intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Mixed liquid crystal formation has been studied in a new binary system comprising paranitroazobenzene derivatives, in which one component was a mesogen and the other was a non-mesogen. The mixtures were found to exhibit a monotropic nematic phase which was converted to an enantiotropic phase in specific ranges of temperature and concentration. The latent liquid crystal-isotropic transition temperature (LTP) of the non-mesogen was obtained by using the extrapolation method of the transition temperature-composition curve and the equal-G analysis method. The LTPs of the non-mesogen obtained by the above two methods showed good agreement with each other. The low-temperature transition of the mixtures detected by DSC was attributed to a change of the crystallite size.

Using high molecular weight (M-n=80,000) Poly(hexano-6-lactone) (PCL'), tough and high tenacity PCL monofilaments with various draw ratios (undrawn to 9 times drawn) were prepared by melt-spinning. The relationship between microstructure and properties of the PCL fibers is described in this current IUPAC Technical Report. Analysis of microstructure of the drawn PCL fibers by wide-angle X-ray diffraction revealed typical c-axis orientation with an increase in crystallinity. It was also supported by sonic velocity measurements. The thermal, mechanical, and dynamic mechanical properties of the PCL fibers were affected significantly by draw ratio. DSC thermograms showed that the melting temperature and the enthalpy of fusion increased with draw ratio. The temperature dependence curves of dynamic viscoelasticity showed that the temperature at tan delta peak of alpha dispersion corresponding to the glass transition temperature shifted toward higher temperature and the peak value of tan delta decreased with draw ratio. The dynamic storage modulus and the sonic modulus increased with draw ratio. These results are due to the increase in crystallinity and molecular orientation with drawing, and are responsible for an increase in tensile tenacity as well as knot tenacity of the PCL fibers.

Isothermal crystallization kinetics in the miscible mixtures of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) have been investigated as a function of the composition and the crystallization temperature by optical microscopy. The radial growth rates of the spherulites have been described by a kinetic equation including the interaction parameter and the free energy for the formation of secondary crystal nuclei. Fold surface free energies decrease slightly with the increase of SAN content. The experimental findings show that the influence of the glass transition temperature of the mixture, which is related to the chain mobility, on the rate of crystallization predominates over the influence of the surface free energies. This indicates that the glass transition temperature of the mixture should be of more importance, so that the growth rates decrease when the content of the noncrystallizable component increases. In addition, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter obtained by fitting the kinetic equation with experimental data is questionable.

Blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) compatibilized by poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) (P(S-b-MMA)) ale studied by FT-IR, DSC, excimer fluorescence spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In FT-IR measurement the ratio of absorption intensity at 1107 cm(-1) to that at 1085 cm(-1) (I-1107/I-1085) reaches a minimum at about 10wt% block copolymer content. DSC results show that the glass transition temperature of PVME in the blends has a maximum at 10 wt% copolymer content. In plots of the ratio of excimer-to-monomer fluorescence emission intensities (I-E/I-M) VS block copolymer content, I-E/I-M increases rapidly above 10%. Ail these phenomena show that PS block chains penetrate into PVME: domains on addition of block copolymer. Above 10% copolymer content, block copolymer chains tend to form micelles in bulk phase.

The novel polyetherethersulfone (PES-C) prepared from phenol-phthalein in our institute is an amorphous, rigid, tough material with good mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. To improve its water vapor permeability for the application of gas drying, the PES-C was sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid and transferred in sodium, cupric, and ferric salt forms. The sulfonation degree can be regulated by controlling the temperature and reaction time. Characterization of sulfonated PES-C in sodium form was made by IR. Some properties of the sulfonated PES-C, such as solubility, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and transport properties to nitrogen and water vapor have also been discussed. Para-para linked aromatic poly(amic ester) precursors of rodlike polyimide (PI) BPDA-PDA and polyetherimide (PEI) HQDPA-ODA were synthesized. The para-para linked poly(amic ester)s were employed in this work to obtain, in theory, full-imidized polyimides. The two precursors were mixed by dissolving them in N, N'-dimethyl acetamide and subsequently coagulating in methanol. After thermal imidization, the miscibility behaviour of the resulting composites has been studied by means of dynamic mechanical analysis (d.m.a.) and differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.). The composites show a single glass transition temperature (T-g) at both d.m.a. and d.s.c. in which the T-g increases with increasing PI content. These Tg values are reproducible in repeated heating cycles, suggesting the true miscibility of the blends. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The mechanical properties of wollastonite-filled phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) composites have been studied at room temperature and 200 degrees C. The dispersion of wollastonite particles in PEK-C matrix were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope. The modulus and strength of the composites increased with filler content. The reinforced effect of wollastonite on PEK-C is more marked at elevated temperature. The glass transition temperature of the composites is higher than that of PEK-C and is independent of filler content. The restriction effect of tiller particles on the molecular mobility of the polymer matrix should be attributed to the reinforcement. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing chloro-side group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and chlorohydroquinone with either 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone(BP/CH/DF) or 1,4-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BP/CH/BF) and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70% biphenol. Melting transition (Tm) and isotropization transition (Ti) both appeared in the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline state. The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s had relatively higher glass transition temperature (Tg) in the range of 168 similar to 200 degrees C and lower melting temperature (Tm) in the range of 290 similar to 340 degrees C. The thermal stability (Td) was in the range of 430 similar to 490 degrees C.
