Foram estudados os efeitos de substâncias reguladoras de crescimento, bem como do nitrato de potássio (KNO3), na germinação de sementes do limão 'volkameriano' (Citrus volkameriana Pasq.). O experimento foi realizado em germinador, contendo papel de filtro umedecido com água destilada e gerbox, como meio para a germinação das sementes. Estas foram retiradas de frutas maduras, lavadas, secas à sombra e armazenadas durante 101 dias em câmara fria. Logo após, foram tratadas com os fitorreguladores e o KNO3 por 24 horas, conforme os tratamentos: H2O; 50 mg/l de GA3; 250 mg/l de GA3; 50 mg/l de GA4 + GA7 + fenilmetilaminopurina; 100 mg/l de GA4 + GA7 + fenilmetilaminopurina; 20 mg/lde fenilmetilaminopurina; 40 mg/lde fenilmetilaminopurina e 0,2% de KNO3. As avaliações foram realizadas depois de 15 dias da semeadura, sendo o intervalo de 2 dias. Através da análise estatística dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que no tratamento com 50 mg/lde GA4 + GA7 + fenilmetilaminopurina houve a maior porcentagem de germinação (89,00%) de sementes, num menor tempo médio (22,29 dias).

Os efeitos de reguladores vegetais do grupo das giberelinas e citocininas, bem como do nitrato de potássio, foram estudados no crescimento e desenvolvimento do porta-enxerto de limoeiro `Cravo' (Citrus limonia Osbeck). As sementes foram extraídas de frutos maduros, lavadas, secas à sombra e armazenadas em câmara fria (4 - 5oC) durante sessenta dias, até o mês de maio/1993, quando foram semeadas nos canteiros de semeadura. As pulverizações com os fitorreguladores foram realizadas no viveiro e tiveram início com as plantas aos 8 meses de idade, contados a partir da semeadura, sendo efetuadas um total de 4 pulverizações, realizadas a intervalos quinzenais. Os tratamentos corresponderam a: 25, 50 e 75 ppm de GA3; 25, 50 e 75 ppm de GA4+GA7+fenilmetil-aminopurina; 20 ppm de fenilmetilpiranil-aminopurina; 0,2% de KNO3 e testemunha (sem pulverização). Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que as pulverizações com os reguladores vegetais e com o nitrato de potássio, realizadas no período de janeiro a março (verão), não tiveram efeito na diminuição do tempo de formação das plantas jovens de limoeiro `Cravo', tendo inclusive, o tratamento com KNO3 0,2%, exercido efeito depressivo no desenvolvimento das mesmas.

Com o objetivo de analisar a aplicação de ácido giberélico (GA3) na germinação de sementes de Actinidia chinensis Pl, sementes foram extraídas de frutos maduros, lavadas e secas à sombra, recebendo os seguintes tratamentos: T1 - estratificação (5oC por 2 semanas); T2 - testemunha; T3 - GA3 à 50 mg.L-1 ; T4 - GA3 à 100 mg.L-1 e T5 - GA3 à 150 mg.L-1. Durante a primeira semana o substrato dos tratamentos T3, T4 e T5 foi umedecido com GA3. O tratamento mais efetivo para aumentar a porcentagem de germinação e diminuir o tempo médio de germinação foi com 150 mg.L-1 de GA3.

Foram estudados os efeitos de reguladores vegetais do grupo das giberelinas e citocininas, bem como do nitrato de potássio na germinação de sementes do limoeiro `Cravo' (Citrus limonia Osbeck). O experimento foi realizado, contendo papel de filtro como substrato para a germinação das sementes, regulado à temperatura de 25oC. As sementes foram retiradas de frutos maduros no final da safra do limoeiro `Cravo', lavadas, secas à sombra e armazenadas durante 11 dias em câmara fria. em seguida, receberam tratamento com os fitorreguladores e KNO3 por 24 horas, de acordo com os tratamentos: KNO3 0,1% e 0,2%; GA3 50, 100 e 250 mg.L-1; GA4 + GA7 + fenilmetilaminopurina 100 mg.L-1; fenilmetilaminopurina 20 mg.L-1 e água destilada (testemunha). As avaliações foram iniciadas 15 dias após a semeadura, em intervalos de 5 dias. Conclui-se que os reguladores vegetais utilizados não afetaram o processo germinativo das sementes e que os tratamentos com nitrato de potássio 0,1% e 0,2% exerceram efeito inibitório sobre a germinação.

Upconversion fluorescence emission of Er3+/Yb3+-doped Bi2O3-Na2O-Nb2O5-GeO2 heavy metal glass samples excited at 1.06 mu m is experimentally investigated. The results reveal the existence of intense emission bands centered around 520, 545, and 655 nm. The germano-niobate based host glass presents high transparency in the region of 400-2700 nm, the capability of incorporating high dopant concentrations, high melting temperature, and large resistance to atmospheric moisture. The observed intensity of the green fluorescence emission, suggested that the niobium based host glass material plays an important role in the efficiency of the upconversion process. Emission lines centered at 425, 483, 503, 608, and 628 nm were also observed. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Mechanical alloying has been used successfully to produce nanocrystalline powders of hydroxyapatite (HA) using three different procedures. The milled HA was studied by X-ray diffraction, Infrared, Raman scattering spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We obtained HA with different degrees of crystallinity and time of milling. The grain size analysis through SEM and XRD shows particles with dimensions of 36.9, 14.3 and 35.5 nm (for (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively) forming bigger units with dimensions given by 117.2, 110.8 and 154.4 nm (for (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively). The Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that an atomic ratio of Ca/P= 1.67, 1.83 and 1.50 for reactions (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively. These results suggest that the R1 nanocrystalline ceramic is closer to the expected value for the ratio Ca/P for hydroxyapatite, which is 513 congruent to 1.67. The bioactivity analysis shows that all the samples implanted into the rabbits can be considered biocompatible, since they had been considered not toxic, bad not caused inflammation and reject on the part of the organisms of the animals, during the period of implantation. The samples implanted in rabbits had presented new osseous tissue formation with the presence of osteoblasts cells. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we report a study of the physicochemical, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of anionic collagen and collagen-hydroxyapatite (HA) composites, considering the development of new biomaterials which have potential applications in support for cellular growth and in systems for bone regeneration. The piezoelectric strain tensor element d(14), the elastic constant s(55) and the dielectric permittivity 8(11), were measured for the anionic collagen and collagen-HA films. The thermal analysis shows that the denaturation endotherm is at 59.47 degreesC for the collagen sample. The collagen-HA composite film shows two transitions, at 48.9 and 80.65 degreesC. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the collagen film shows a broad band characteristic of an amorphous material. The main peaks associated to the crystalline HA is present in the sample of collagen-HA. In the collagen-HA composite, one can also notice the presence of other peaks with low intensities which is an indication of the formation of other crystalline phases of apatite. The scanning electron photomicrograph of anionic collagen membranes shows very thin bundles of collagen. The scanning electron photomicrography of collagen-HA film also show deposits of hydroxyapatite on the collagen fibers forming larger bundles and suggesting that a collagenous structure of reconstituted collagen fibers could act as nucleators for the formation of apatite crystal similar to those of bone. The piezoelectric strain tensor element d(14) was measured for the anionic collagen, with a value of 0.062 pC N-1, which is in good agreement compared with values reported in the literature obtained with other techniques. For the collagen-HA composite membranes, a slight decrease of the value of the piezoelectricity (0.041 pC N-1) was observed. In this paper a modified chalcogenide glass was studied by X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis, infrared and Raman scattering spectroscopies. The study of this new matrix opens new perspectives to fabricate Pr3+-doped fibers to operate as an optical amplifier in the 1.3 mum telecommunications window. The Pr3+-doped 70Ga(2)S(3)-30La(2)S(3) glass was modified through the substitution of La2S3 by La2O3, which improves the thermal stability of these glasses without any modification of phonon energy. The possibility to pull a fiber from this glass system without any devitrification is easily achieved.

In this work it is presented for the first time the nanostructured hydroxyapatites doped with 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt% of Eu3+ prepared at room temperature by the mechanical alloying technique. X-ray diffraction powder (XRD), infrared (IR) and Raman scattering spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microhardness measurements as well as luminescent data of Eu3+ were used to investigate the structural and optical properties of these nanomaterials. The electrical and dielectrical analyses were used with the intention of having a better comprehension about the electromagnetic fields in pure and doped hydroxyapatites.

The parameter time-depth index (TDI) is applied in this study to quantify empirically the influence of burial history on sandstone porosity evolution. The TDI, expressed in kilometers per million years of age, is defined as the area in the burial history diagram enclosed by the burial curve of the reservoir and the axes of the diagram. In practice, reservoir depths during burial history are integrated at regular time intervals of 1 m.y. The calculations exclude present-day bathymetry or paleobathymetry. Sandstone reservoirs from several sedimentary basins along the Brazilian continental margin (Santos, Campos, Espírito Santo, Cumuruxatiba, Recôncavo, Sergipe, Alagoas, and Potiguar) were analyzed to investigate the evolution of porosity against TDI. These Upper Jurassic to Tertiary sandstones lie in depths of 700 to 4900 m, and are hydrocarbon charged (oil or gas). Average porosities of most of these reservoirs were obtained from core analysis, and a few porosity data were taken from well log interpretations. Detrital constituents of the sandstones are mainly quartz, feldspar, and granitic/gneissic rock fragments. Sandstones were grouped into three main reservoir types, based on composition (detrital quartz content) and grain sorting: Type I (average quartz content <50%) are very coarse grained to conglomeratic, poorly to very poorly sorted lithic arkoses. Rock fragments are mainly granitic/gneissic and coarse grained. Type II (average quartz content ranging from 50% to 70%) are fine- to coarse-grained (pebbles absent or occurring in small percentages), moderately sorted arkoses. Type III (average quartz content >80%) are fine to coarse, moderately to poorly sorted quartz arenites or subarkoses. Plots of average porosity against depth show great dispersion in porosity values; such dispersion is mostly due to differences in the reservoir burial histories. However, plotting porosity values against the TDI for individual reservoir types produces well-defined trends. The decrease in porosity is less marked in Type III reservoirs, intermediate in Type II, and faster in Type I. Such plots suggest that it is possible to make relatively accurate porosity predictions based on reservoir TDI, texture, and composition,: within the constraints of reservoir depth/age and basin tectonics analyzed in this study.
