Efeito antimicrobiano e citotóxico do óleo essencial de Cymbopogon citratus sobre células odontoblastóides

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and cytotoxic effect of essential oil (EO) of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus). From the agar diffusion method, different concentrations of EO (0.135%, 0.2% and 1%), and control solutions (chlorhexidine (Chx), distilled water (Ad) and cereal alcohol (Ac)) were applied on cultures of Candida albicans (C.a), Streptococcus mutans (S.m), Streptococcus sobrinus (S.sob) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (L.a). For C.a, S.m and S.sob, the largest inhibition zones in descending order were: Chx, Ac and EO 1%, while the latter two were statistically similar (Mann-Whitney, p> 0.05). For L.a, the largest inhibition halo was observed for the Chx, followed by EO at 1%, 0.2%, 0.135% and Ac. For evaluation of cytotoxicity, the following groups were set: G1: 0,1% EO; G2: pure EO; G3 (positive control): H2 O2 ; G4: cereal alcohol; and G5 (negative control): culture medium – DMEM. The solutions were applied on the cultured MDPC-23 cells, which were plated (30,000 cells/cm2 ) in wells of 24 well-dishes. Cell metabolism was evaluated by MTT assay. Considering G5 (negative control) as 100% of cell metabolism, it was observed for G1, G2, G3 and G4 a percentage reduction in cell metabolism of 29.6%, 82%, 81.2% and 33.4%, respectively. It was concluded that the low concentration of 0,1% OE (C. citratus) was able to inhibit the growth of the strains tested as well as caused mild cytotoxicity to the cultured MDPC-23 cells.

Influência da reinstrumentação do degrau apical radicular após o posicionamento primário do cone principal de guta-percha noselamento apical

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the apical leakage after the apical re-preparation and replacement of the principal gutta-percha point plus endodontic sealer (Sealer 26TM). Sixty extracted human canines were prepared by using a step back technique up to size 50 K type file apically. At each change of instrument the canals were irrigated with distilled water. After that step, the external surface roots were coated and subdivided into six groups with ten roots each: I – single gutta percha point technique; II – lateral condensation and III – hybrid technique. The IV, V and VI groups were similar to others groups but after to place the principal gutta percha point, it was removed, re-prepared up to size 60K file and in sequence replaced the principal gutta percha point and the root canal filling finished. The specimens were immersed in 2% Rhodamine BTM for 7 days at 37 oC. The apical leakage was measured by Image ToolsTM program. With Kruskal Wallis test statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the techniques (p > 0.05).

O futebol nos dias de hoje representa algo muito maior do que um exercício físico ou uma atividade de descontração. Ele desempenha um papel dentro da sociedade que extrapola as perspectivas do jogo. Reduzir a análise sobre o futebol profissional apenas ao aspecto lúdico do esporte também diminui a concepção sobre o que ele realmente representa. Nos bastidores do espetáculo futebolístico existe um universo de atos políticos que abrangem diversas esferas do poder que por sua vez auxiliam na execução do esporte como um evento esportivo com milhões de espectadores. Uma das razões para que o âmbito político do esporte seja menos conhecido do que as táticas dos técnicos ou dribles dos jogadores é a cobertura feita pelos meios de comunicação. No decorrer de sua existência, o futebol se transformou em um evento globalizado que envolve em sua órbita muito mais do que apenas o aspecto esportivo. Com os anos, o esporte foi se firmando em diversos países como produto cultural e até mesmo ferramenta política. O que se vê contudo é a sobreposição midiática do jogo sobre a sua verdadeira estrutura. O entretenimento trazido pelo esporte ganha as páginas enquanto o jogo político que sustenta a realização do mesmo recebe uma atenção mais discreta das mídias. A proposta deste trabalho é analisar como foi feita a divulgação de notícias referentes à Copa do Mundo de 2014, que será realizada no Brasil, nos jornais Folha de S.Paulo e O Estado de S. Paulo durante o ano de 2012 através dos seus cadernos de esportes. O objetivo é compreender qual é o teor e a intensidade da cobertura sobre os fatos políticos que ajudam a dar forma ao evento mais importante do futebol. Acontecimentos desta proporção exigem preparação do país, o que implica em um trabalho em conjunto entre o Governo Federal e FIFA. Construção e vivência de valores: aprendendo a ser e a conviver

This study was developed from a extension project between the years of 2006 -2009 in a Middle School in the city of Bauru with the goals to support the construction of citizenship in teenagers and to strengthen their self esteem, their self knowledge and the achievement of their rights and duties in order to ease their insertion into the collective, as they realize themselves as social transformation agents. It is an adaptation of a project developed by the ODEBRECHT foundation in Bahia focusing on the transverse themes: Ethics, Sexual Education, Cultural Plurality, Work and Consumption, and Health and Environment. These themes, in addition to others that each school needs to prioritize due to the vicissitudes that experiences, must permeate across the curriculum to create, transform and favor their development by means of the daily living. The survey methodology was based in the research-action. We considered the activities developed in groups and the result of Defining Issues Test (DIT-1) applied before and after Project for data collection. The result indicates change in the moral development of the teenagers and new perceptions about the problems that are presented in the reality, providing the construction of values present in the transverse themes proposal. Greater participation of students in the school activities, like student guild and fanfare, was also observed.

Functional neurologic recovery in two dogs diagnosed with severe luxation of the vertebral column

Traumatic injuries to the vertebral column, spinal cord, and cauda equina nerve roots occur frequently in human and veterinary medicine and lead to devastating consequences. Complications include partial or complete loss of motor, sensory, and visceral functions, which are among the main causes of euthanasia in dogs. The present case report describes neurological functional recovery in two dogs that were treated surgically for severe spinal fracture and vertebral luxation. In the first case, a stray, mixed breed puppy was diagnosed with thoracolumbar syndrome and Schiff-Scherrington posture, as well as a T13 caudal epiphyseal fracture with 100% luxation between vertebrae T13 and L1; despite these injuries, the animal did show deep pain sensation in the pelvic limbs. Decompression through hemilaminectomy and spinal stabilization with vertebral body pins and bone cement were performed, and the treatment was supplemented with physiotherapy and acupuncture. In the second case, a mixed breed dog was diagnosed with a vertebral fracture and severe luxation between L6 and L7 after a vehicular trauma, but maintained nociception and perineal reflex. Surgical stabilization of the spine was performed using a modified dorsal segmental fixation technique Both patients showed significant recovery of neurological function. Complete luxation of the spinal canal observed radiographically does not mean a poor prognosis, and in some cases, motor, sensory, and visceral functions all have the potential for recovery. In the first case the determining factor for good prognosis was the presence of deep pain perception, and in the second case the prognosis was determined by the presence of sensitivity and anal sphincter tone during the initial neurological examination.

Propriedades ópticas de nanopartículas de halogenetos de cobre preparadas in situ em filmes híbridos de sílica

The sol-gel process is a technique based on the hydrolysis and polycondensation of metal alkoxides have been investigated as an alternative for the preparation of vitreous or glassceramic materials, for allowing the obtaining of high-purity materials at low temperatures, and to obtain hybrid materials with different compositions. When ORMOSILs are doped with nanoparticles, are called nanocomposites, and its functionality arises when electrons confined in scale three-dimensional structures near zero are excited. In principle, such materials exhibit discrete energy level, with peaks in the absorption spectrum. Therefore, the glasses doped semiconductor nanocrystals are important candidates for the preparation of optical filters with sharp cut-off, and are being exploited commercially for coloring glasses. This study evaluates the optical properties presented by hybrid films of silica doped with copper nanoparticles. The matrix was prepared using the alkoxides 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) doped with Cu2O and hydrolyzed under reflux conditions in two different acidic conditions (HCl and HBr). After thermal treatment at temperatures between 100 °C and 170 °C and/or under the action of commercial black light radiation, CuCl and CuBr present in the hybrid film are transformed into nanoparticles of CuCl or CuBr.
