Bombesin (BN) elicits in the rat important behavioural modifications, including inhibition of food and of water intake. Recently, it has been observed that the peptide also inhibits the intake of sodium chloride. To stare whether BN possesses a selective antinatriorexic effect or it elicits only an aspecific depression of ingestive behaviour, we studied the effects of this peptide on the intake of sodium, water or sucrose of Wistar rats after injections into the fourth brain ventricle or into selected brain areas involved in the control of sodium intake, containing BN-like peptides and/or their precursors or specific receptors. We observed that: a) BN (100-200 ng/rat) injected into the fourth brain ventricle inhibits not only the intake of 2% NaCl of sodium depleted rats but also that of water and of 5% sucrose; b) BN (5-50 ng/rat) administered into the nucleus of the solitary tract and the medial amygdala does not influence the intake of these fluids and c) BN (5-50 ng/rat) injected into the paraventricular nucleus does not influence the intake of water and 5% sucrose but potently inhibits that of 2% NaCl. We concluded that the inhibitory effect elicited on salt intake by intracranial administration of BN is selective for this behaviour and is not the expression of an aspecific depression of ingestive behaviour. The present experiments were conducted to investigate the role of the alpha (1A)-, alpha (1B), beta (1),- and beta (2)-adrenoceptors of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) on the water and salt intake responses elicited by subfornical organ (SFO) injection of angiotensin II (ANG II) in rats. 5-methylurapidil (an alpha (1A)-adrenergic antagonist), cyclazosin (an alpha (1B)-adrenergic antagonist) and ICI-118,551 (a beta (2)-adrenergic antagonist) injected into the LH produced a dose-dependent reduction, whereas efaroxan (an alpha (2)-antagonist) increased the water intake induced by administration of ANG II into the SFO. These data show that injection of 5-methylurapidil into the LH prior to ANG II into the SFO increased the water and sodium intake induced by the injection of ANG II. The present data also show that atenolol (a beta (1)-adrenergic antagonist), ICI-118,551, cyclazosin, or efaroxan injected into the LH reduced in a dose-dependent manner the water and sodium intake to angiotensinergic activation of SFO. Thus, the alpha (1)- and beta -adrenoceptors of the LH are possibly involved with central mechanisms dependent on ANG II and SFO that control water and sodium intake. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 1% sodium hypochlorite and five intracanals medications on Candida albicans harvested inside root canals. The contaminated canals were irrigated with sterile saline solution and then treated as follows: (i) filled with Calen paste (calcium hydroxide/glycol polyethylene paste); (ii) filled with camphorated paramonochloro phenol (CPMC); (iii) filled with 2% iodine-iodate solution; (iv) filled with tricresol formalin; (v) filled with Calen and CPMC pastes; (vi) irrigation with 1% sodium hypochlorite and filled with no intracanal medication; and (vii) no intracanal medication was used. Canal access and the apical foramen were then sealed with Cavit and the roots were stored in a humid chamber at 37 +/- 1 degreesC for 14 days. The canals were reinstrumented and irrigated with sterile saline solution. Sterile paper points were used to transfer the root canal contents to test tubes containing sterile saline solution. Part of the suspension was harvested in Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol and incubated at 37 +/- 1 degreesC for 48 h, CPMC was effective in 100% of the samples followed in decreasing order of effectiveness by calcium hydroxide with CPMC (70% effective), 1% sodium hypochlorite (70% effective) (p < 0.05), tricresol formalin (60% effective), 2% iodine-iodate solution (50% effective), calcium hydroxide paste (30% effective), and saline + no intracanal medication.

A soft chemistry route is described to obtain glasses in the P2O5-Na2O-ZnO-H2O. It is based on the addition of zinc salts to coacervates prepared from sodium polyphosphate. The processing of these coacervates leads to polyphosphate glasses with the same properties as those of glasses prepared in the classical way. So far, little work has been implemented in this system using 'coacervate route'. However, it makes an attractive method for coating and joining processes on the industrial scale. As the anion associated to zinc may take part in the adhesion mechanism, coacervate formation has been studied using zinc chloride, nitrate and sulphate as starting materials. The physical properties of the glasses obtained by this method are reported and potential applications of zinc and silver coacervate are described. Siloxane-polyoxypropylene (PPO) hybrids obtained by the sol-gel process and containing short polymer chain have been doped with different sodium salts NaX (X = ClO4, BF4 or I). The effect of the counter-ion (X) on the chemical environment of the sodium ions and on the ionic conductivity of these hybrids was investigated by Na-23 NMR, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), complex impedance, Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results reveal that the different sodium salts have essentially the same effect on the nanoscopic structure of the hybrids. The formation of immobile Na+ cations involved in NaCl-like species could be minimized by using a low amount of HCl as hydrolytic catalyst. The differences in the ionic conductivity of hybrids doped with different sodium salts were correlated with the proportion of Na ions solvated by ether-type oxygen of the polymeric chains and by the carboxyl oxygen located in the urea groups of the PPO chain extremities. A study of the preconcentration of tioethers in air by means of the passage of gas flow on solid sorbents coated with sodium tetrachloropalladate was undertaken with the aim of achieving chemical fixation. This fixation presented high specificity and blocked the migration of the sorbed compound through the other active sites. The species obtained were selectively dissolved in organic solvents, resulting in the sulfur reduced compound concentration in the organic phase, which could be determined spectrophotometrically.

Aluminium Hydroxides were precipitated from Aluminium Nitrate and Ammonium Hydroxide, at the temperatures 64 degrees C (hot) and 25 degrees C (cold), under the pH conditions 5, 7 and 9. The samples were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). The hydroxide precipitated at pH 9 and 64 degrees C is built up by pseudoboehmite and a minor share of others apparently amorphous hydroxides. The crystallinity of the hot yielded pseudoboehmite diminishes with the pH. The crystallite size was evaluated as about 40 Angstrom for the best crystallized sample. The cold precipitated product is apparently composed by amorphous or very poorly crystallized hydroxides. Upon heating, the cold precipitated hydroxides, and the low pH and hot precipitated hydroxide, release their structural water before the occurrence, about 430 degrees C, of the transition of the pseudoboehmite to gamma-alumina, and exhibit a shifting (towards low temperature side) and a broadening in the peak of the transition to alpha-alumina, which occurs at 1200 degrees C in the pseudoboehmite pattern. The yielded pseudo-boehmite peptized by HNO3, addition and gelified by evaporation in a critical concentration approximately 0.17 gcm(-3).

The synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical study of the Zn(II)-Al(III) and Zn(II)-Cr(III) Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) containing 2-thiopenecarboxylate as the interlayer anions are described. The LDHs were prepared by the constant pH coprecipitation technique followed by hydrothermal treatment for 72 h. The materials were analyzed by PXRD, FT-IR, C-13 CP-MAS, EDX, TEM, and CV. The presence of the organic heterocyclic anions was confirmed by FT-IR and the related solid-state C-13 NMR data strongly suggested that these were dimerised during coprecipitation. Accordingly, the basal spacing found by the X-ray technique was similar to 15.3 Angstrom, a distance coincident with the formation of bilayers of the intercalated anions. The structural organization of all the new materials was greatly enhanced by hydrothermal treatment, as shown by PXRD. The improved organization of the bilayered structures had a strong influence in the electrochemical behaviour of clay-modified electrodes produced with these materials, such as the diminished resistance to the ionic flow through the LDHs films. This study investigated the effects of bilateral injections of a serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonist into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) on the intake of NaCl and water induced by 24-h water deprivation or by sodium depletion followed by 24 h of sodium deprivation (injection of the diuretic furosemide plus 24 h of sodium-deficient diet). Rats had stainless steel cannulas implanted bilaterally into the LPBN. Bilateral LPBN injections of the serotonergic 5-HT1/2 receptor antagonist methysergide (4 mu g/200 nl at each site) increased hypertonic NaCl intake when tested 24 h after sodium depletion and after 24 h of water deprivation. Water intake also increased after bilateral injections of methysergide into the LPBN. In contrast, the intake of a palatable solution (0.06 M sucrose) under body fluid-replete conditions was not changed after bilateral LPBN methysergide injections. The results show that serotonergic mechanisms in the LPBN modulate water and sodium intake induced by volume depletion and sodium loss. The finding that sucrose intake was not affected by LPBN serotonergic blockade suggests that the effects of the methysergide treatment on the intakes of water and NaCl are not due to a mechanism producing a nonspecific enhancement of all ingestive behaviors.

The interaction between sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and acrylic acid (AA)-ethyl methacrylate (EMA) copolymers has been investigated using steady state fluorescence and conductimetric measurements to assess the effect of the polymer composition on the aggregation process. Micropolarity studies using the ratio between the emission intensities of the vibronic bands of pyrene (I-1/I-3) and the shift of the fluorescence emission of pyrene-3-carboxaldehyde show, that the interaction of SDS with AA-EMA copolymers occurs at surfactant concentrations smaller than that observed for the pure surfactant in water and depends on the copolymer composition. The increase of ethyl methacrylate in the copolymers lowers the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) due to the larger hydrophobic character of the polymer backbone. The formation of aggregates on the macromolecule is induced mainly, by hydrophobic interactions, but the process is also influenced by the ionic strength due to the counter-ions of the polyelectrolyte.
