The mechanism of sub-microscopic precipitation in an Al-Zn-Mg alloy selected for its maximum response to ageing has been studied by a standardized oxide-replica technique in a 100 kV. Philips Electron Microscope. Contrary to earlier conclusions, examination of the oxide replicas has been shown to reveal details of the precipitation process almost as clearly as the thin-foil transmission technique. The reported formation of spherical Guinier-Preston zones followed by the development of a Widmanstaetten pattern of precipitated platelets has been confirmed. The zones have, however, been shown to grow into the platelets and not to dissolve in the matrix as reported earlier. The precipitation process has been correlated with the Hardness/Ageing Time curve and the structure of the precipitates has also been discussed.

It has been shown that the conventional practice of designing a compensated hot wire amplifier with a fixed ceiling to floor ratio results in considerable and unnecessary increase in noise level at compensation settings other than optimum (which is at the maximum compensation at the highest frequency of interest). The optimum ceiling to floor ratio has been estimated to be between 1.5-2.0 ωmaxM. Application of the above considerations to an amplifier in which the ceiling to floor ratio is optimized at each compensation setting (for a given amplifier band-width), shows the usefulness of the method in improving the signal to noise ratio.

ZnO (core)/graphitic (shell) nanowires were successfully fabricated by a one-step method. Morphology of the as-grown nanowires was studied in detail by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS). High resolution TEM micrographs and selected area electron diffraction patterns reveal the core/shell morphology of the nanowires that grew along the c-axis of ZnO. EDS study of the nanowires confirms that there are no impurities within the detectable limit. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer measurements show room temperature ferromagnetic ordering in these core/shell nanowires. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A hypomonotectic alloy of Al-4.5wt%Cd has been manufactured by melt spinning and the resulting microstructure examined by transmission electron microscopy. As-melt spun hypomonotectic Al-4.5wt%Cd consists of a homogeneous distribution of faceted 5 to 120 nm diameter cadmium particles embedded in a matrix of aluminium, formed during the monotectic solidification reaction. The cadmium particles exhibit an orientation relationship with the aluminium matrix of {111}Al//{0001}Cd and lang110rangAlAl//lang11¯20> Cd, with four cadmium particle variants depending upon which of the four {111}Al planes is parallel to {0001}Cd. The cadmium particles exibit a distorted cuboctahedral shape, bounded by six curved {100}Al//{20¯23}Cd facets, six curved {111}Al/{40¯43}Cd facets and two flat {111}Al//{0001}Cd facets. The as-melt spun cadmium particle shape is metastable and the cadmium particles equilibrate during heat treatment below the cadmium melting point, becoming elongated to increase the surface area and decrease the separation of the {111}Al//{0001}Cd facets. The equilibrium cadmium particle shape and, therefore, the anisotropy of solid aluminium-solid cadmium and solid aluminium -liquid cadmium surface energies have been monitored by in situ heating in the transmission electron microscope over the temperature range between room temperature and 420 °C. The anisotropy of solid aluminium-solid cadmium surface energy is constant between room temperature and the cadmium melting point, with the {100}Al//{20¯23}Cd surface energy on average 40% greater than the {111}Al//{0001}Cd surface energy, and 10% greater than the {111}Al//{40¯43Cd surface energy. When the cadmium particles melt at temperatures above 321 °C, the {100}Al//{20¯23}Cd facets disappear and the {111}Al//{40¯43}Cd and {111}A1//{0001}Cd surface energies become equal. The {111}Al facets do not disappear when the cadmium particles melt, and the anisotropy of solid aluminium-liquid cadmium surface energy decreases gradually with increasing temperature above the cadmium melting point. The kinetics of cadmium solidification have been examined by heating and cooling experiments in a differential scanning calorimeter over a range of heating and cooling rates. Cadmium particle solidification is nucleated catalytically by the surrounding aluminium matrix on the {111}Al faceted surfaces, with an undercooling of 56 K and a contact angle of 42 °. The nucleation kinetics of cadmium particle solidification are in good agreement with the hemispherical cap model of heterogeneous nucleation.

Novel one and two dimensional NMR techniques are proposed and utilized for the determination of the signs of the order parameters used for the study of the mobility of the fatty acid chains. The experiments designed to extract this information involve the use of the intensities of the side bands in the spectra of oriented systems spinning at the magic angle. Advantages of the two dimensional technique over the one dimensional method are discussed. The utility of the method in the study of the dynamic properties of membranes and model systems is pointed out.

The Integrated Force Method (IFM) is a novel matrix formulation developed for analyzing the civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering structures. In this method all independent/internal forces are treated as unknown variables which are calculated by simultaneously imposing equations of equilibrium and compatibility conditions. This paper presents a new 12-node serendipity quadrilateral plate bending element MQP12 for the analysis of thin and thick plate problems using IFM. The Mindlin-Reissner plate theory has been employed in the formulation which accounts the effect of shear deformation. The performance of this new element with respect to accuracy and convergence is studied by analyzing many standard benchmark plate bending problems. The results of the new element MQP12 are compared with those of displacement-based 12-node plate bending elements available in the literature. The results are also compared with exact solutions. The new element MQP12 is free from shear locking and performs excellent for both thin and moderately thick plate bending situations.

The photoluminescence (PL) properties of nano- and micro-crystalline Hg1-xCdxTe (x approximate to 0.8) grown by the solvothermal method have been studied over the temperature range 10-300 K. The emission spectra of the samples excited with 514.5 nm Ar+ laser consist of five prominent bands around 0.56, 0.60, 0.69, 0.78 and 0.92 eV. The entire PL band in this NIR region is attributed to the luminescence from defect centers. The features like temperature independent peak energy and quite sensitive PL intensity, which has a maximum around 50 K is illustrated by the configuration coordinate model. After 50 K, the luminescence shows a thermal quenching behavior that is usually exhibited by amorphous semiconductors, indicating that the defects are related to the compositional disorder. Zinc-10 and 20 wt pct Pb alloys have been rapidly solidified by melt spinning to obtain a very fine scale dispersion of nanometer-sized Pb particles embedded in Zn matrix. The microstructure and crystallography of the Pb particles have been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Each embedded Pb particle is a single crystal, with a truncated hexagonal biprism shape with the 6/mmm Zn matrix point group symmetry surrounded by and { 0001 á },\text { \text10[`\text1] \text0 },\text and { \text10[`\text1] \text1 }0001 1010 and 1011 facets. The Pb particles solidify with a well-defined orientation relationship with the Zn matrix of ( 0001 )Zn ||(111)Pb\text and\text [ \text11[`\text2] \text0 ]Zn| ||[ 1[`1] 0 ]Pb 0001Zn(111)Pb and 1120Zn110Pb . The melting and solidification behavior of the Pb particle have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Pb particles solidify with an undercooling of approximately 30 K, by heterogeneous nucleation on the {0001} facets of the surrounding Zn matrix, with an apparent contact angle of 23 deg.

A new method based on analysis of a single diffraction pattern is proposed to measure deflections in micro-cantilever (MC) based sensor probes, achieving typical deflection resolutions of 1nm and surface stress changes of 50 mu N/m. The proposed method employs a double MC structure where the deflection of one of the micro-cantilevers relative to the other due to surface stress changes results in a linear shift of intensity maxima of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the transilluminated MC. Measurement of such shifts in the intensity maxima of a particular order along the length of the structure can be done to an accuracy of 0.01mm leading to the proposed sensitivity of deflection measurement in a typical microcantilever. This method can overcome the fundamental measurement sensitivity limit set by diffraction and pointing stability of laser beam in the widely used Optical Beam Deflection method (OBDM).

The infrared spectrum of the matrix-isolated species of thioacetamide has been simulated using the extended molecular mechanics method. The equilibrium structure, vibrational frequencies, dipole moment and infrared absorption intensities of thioacetamide have been calculated in good agreement with the experiment. The vibrational frequencies and infrared absorption intensities for the isotopic molecules (CH2CSNH2)-C-13, (CH3CSNH2)-N-15 and (CH2CSND2)-C-13 have also been calculated consistent with the experiment. The infrared spectra of the matrix isolated species of N- and C- deuterated isotopomers of thioacetamide, CH3CSND2 and CD3CSNH2 have also been simulated in satisfactory agreement with the experimental spectra.

The infrared spectra of the matrix isolated species of N-methylformamide (NMF) and N-methylacetamide (NMA) and their N-deuterated molecules have been simulated by the extended molecular mechanics method using an empirical force field which includes charges and charge fluxes as coulombic potential parameters. The structural parameters and dipole. moments of NMF and NMA have. also been computed in satisfactory agreement with the experiment. Good agreement between experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies and infrared absorption band intensities for NMF and NMA and their deuterated molecules has been obtained. The vibrational assignments of NMF and NMA are-discussed taking also into account the infrared absorption intensities.

Copolymers of o-lm-toluidine with o-lm-amino benzoic acid have been synthesized by chemical polymerization using inverse emulsion pathway and characterized by a number of techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, FT Raman, EPR and NMR spectroscopies, thermal analysis and conductivity. The solubility of the copolymers in organic solvents increases with increase in the amount of amino benzoic acid in the feed. The copolymers synthesized at room temperature show relatively higher conductivity and are obtained in higher yield compared to those synthesized at 0 and 60 degreesC. The spectral studies have revealed restricted conjugation along the polymer chain. The effect of -COOH substituent on the copolymer structure is discussed. The Brittle-to-ductile-transition-temperature (BDTT) of free-standing Pt-aluminide (PtAl) coating specimens, i.e. stand-alone coating specimens without any substrate, was determined by micro-tensile testing technique. The effect of Pt content, expressed in terms of the thickness of initial electro-deposited Pt layer, on the BDTT of the coating has been evaluated and an empirical correlation drawn. Increase in the electrodeposited Pt layer thickness from nil to 10 mu m was found to cause an increase in the BDTT of the coating by about 100 degrees C.

Size and strain rate effects are among several factors which play an important role in determining the response of nanostructures, such as their deformations, to the mechanical loadings. The mechanical deformations in nanostructure systems at finite temperatures are intrinsically dynamic processes. Most of the recent works in this context have been focused on nanowires [1, 2], but very little attention has been paid to such low dimensional nanostructures as quantum dots (QDs). In this contribution, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with an embedded atom potential method(EAM) are carried out to analyse the size and strain rate effects in the silicon (Si) QDs, as an example. We consider various geometries of QDs such as spherical, cylindrical and cubic. We choose Si QDs as an example due to their major applications in solar cells and biosensing. The analysis has also been focused on the variation in the deformation mechanisms with the size and strain rate for Si QD embedded in a matrix of SiO2 [3] (other cases include SiN and SiC matrices). It is observed that the mechanical properties are the functions of the QD size, shape and strain rate as it is in the case for nanowires [2]. We also present the comparative study resulted from the application of different EAM potentials in particular, the Stillinger-Weber (SW) potential, the Tersoff potentials and the environment-dependent interatomic potential (EDIP) [1]. Finally, based on the stabilized structural properties we compute electronic bandstructures of our nanostructures using an envelope function approach and its finite element implementation.
