The optical cross section of PS I in whole cells of Porphyridium cruentum (UTEX 161), held in either state 1 or state 2, was determined by measuring the change in absorbance at 820nm, an indication of P700+; the X-section of PS2 was determined by measuring the variable fluorescence, (Fv-Fo)/Fo, from PS2. Both cross-sections were 7 determined by fitting Poisson distribution equations to the light saturation curves obtained with single turnover laser flashes which varied in intensity from zero to a level where maximum yield occurred. Flash wavelengths of 574nm, 626nm, and 668nm were used, energy absorbed by PBS, by PBS and chla, and by chla respectively. There were two populations of both PSi and PS2. A fraction of PSi is associated with PBS, and a fraction of PS2 is free from PBS. On the transition S1->S2, only with PBS-absorbed energy (574nm) did the average X-section of PSi increase (27%), and that of PS2 decrease (40%). The fraction of PSi associated with PBS decreased, from 0.65 to 0.35, and the Xsection of this associated PS 1 increased, from 135±65 A2 to 400±300A2. The cross section of PS2 associated with PBS decreased from 150±50 A2 to 85±45 A2, but the fraction of PS2 associated with PBS, approximately 0.75, did not change significantly. The increase in PSi cross section could not be completely accounted for by postulating that several PSi are associated with a single PBS and that in the transition to state2, fewer PSi share the same number of PBS, resulting in a larger X-section. It is postulated that small changes occur in the attachment of PS2 to PBS causing energy to be diverted to the attached PSi. These experiments support neither the mobile-PBS model of state transitions nor that of spillover. From cross section changes there was no evidence of energy transfer from PS2 to PSi with 668nm light. The decrease in PS2 fluorescence which occurred at this wavelength cannot be explained by energy transfer; another explanation must be sought. No explanation was found for an observed decrease in PSi yield at high flash intensities.

The cross section for the removal of high-momentum protons from 16O is calculated for high missing energies. The admixture of high-momentum nucleons in the 16O ground state is obtained by calculating the single-hole spectral function directly in the finite nucleus with the inclusion of short-range and tensor correlations induced by a realistic meson-exchange interaction. The presence of high-momentum nucleons in the transition to final states in 15N at 60¿100 MeV missing energy is converted to the coincidence cross section for the (e,e¿p) reaction by including the coupling to the electromagnetic probe and the final state interactions of the outgoing proton in the same way as in the standard analysis of the experimental data. Detectable cross sections for the removal of a single proton at these high missing energies are obtained which are considerably larger at higher missing momentum than the corresponding cross sections for the p-wave quasihole transitions. Cross sections for these quasihole transitions are compared with the most recent experimental data available.

Double photoionization of argon was studied by photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS). Cross sections for the double photoionization into the {3s3p^5} {^1P}, {^3P} states of Ar^{+ +} are presented for exciting photon energies between threshold and 120 eV. In the threshold range the energy dependencies of these cross sections were determined for the first time. Singlet and triplet states are populated with comparable probabilities at equal excess energies, in contrast to predictions of the extended Wannier theory. At hv = 100eV the spin-or-bit splitting of the 3s3p^5 ^3P state was resolved, and a cross section for the production of Ar^{+ +} {3s^0}{3p^6 } {^1S_0} was determined for the first time.

Krypton atoms were excited by photons in the energy range from the threshold for photoionization of the 3d-electrons up to 120 eV. and the fluorescence radiation in the spectral range from 780 to 965 A was observed and analyzed. Cross sections for the population of excited states in KrIII with at least one 4s-hole resulting from an Auger transition as the first decay step and for KrII satellites were determined. The energy dependence of the 3d-ionization cross section in the 3d{_5/2}- and the 3d{_3/2}-threshold range was derived from the experimental data. The cross sections for production of KrII states were found to follow the energy dependence of the 3d-cross sections.

Absolute Kr 4s-electron photoionization cross sections as a function of the exciting-photon energy were measured by photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS) at improved primary-energy resolution. The cross sections were determined from threshold to 33.5 eV and to 90 eV with primary-photon bandwidths of 25 meV and 50 meV, respectively. The measurements were compared with experimental data and selected theoretical calculations for the direct Kr 4s-electron photoionization cross sections.

The photoionization cross sections for the production of the Kr II 4s state and Kr II satellite states were studied in the 4s ionization threshold region. The interference of direct photoionization and ionization through the autoionization decay of doubly-excited states was considered. In the calculations of doubly-excited state energies, performed by a configuration interaction technique, the 4p spin-orbit interaction and the (Kr II core)-(excited electron) Coulomb interaction were included. The theoretical cross sections are in many cases in good agreement with the measured values. Strong resonant features in the satellite spectra with threshold energies greater than 30 eV are predicted.

Electron attachment was studied in gaseous dinitrogen pentoxide, N2O5, for incident electron energies between a few meV and 10 eV. No stable parent anion N2O5- was observed but several anionic fragments (NO3-, NO2-, NO-, O-, and O-2(-)) were detected using quadrupole mass spectrometry. Many of these dissociative pathways were found to be coupled and provide detailed information on the dynamics of N2O5 fragmentation. Estimates of the cross sections for production of each of the anionic fragments were made and suggest that electron attachment to N2O5 is amongst the most efficient attachment reactions recorded for nonhalogenated polyatomic systems. The ozone-ethene reaction has been investigated at low pressure in a flow-tube interfaced to a u.v. photoelectron spectrometer. Photoelectron spectra recorded as a function of reaction time have been used to estimate partial pressures of the reagents and products, using photoionization cross-sections for selected photoelectron bands of the reagents and products, which have been measured separately. Product yields compare favourably with results of other studies, and the production of oxygen and acetaldehyde have been measured as a function of time for the first time. A reaction scheme developed for the ozone-ethene reaction has been used to simulate the reagents and products as a function of time. The results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. For each of the observed products, the simulations allow the main reaction (or reactions) for production of that product to be established. The product yields have been used in a global model to estimate their global annual emissions in the atmosphere. Of particular interest are the calculated global annual emissions of formaldehyde (0.96 ± 0.10 Tg) and formic acid, (0.05 ± 0.01 Tg) which are estimated as 0.04% and 0.7% of the total annual emission respectively.

In this work we propose a simple model for the total proton-air cross section, which is an improvement of the minijet model with the inclusion of a window in the p(T)-spectrum associated to the saturation physics. Our approach introduces a natural cutoff for the perturbative calculations which modifies the energy behavior of this component. The saturated component is calculated with a dipole model. The results are compared with experimental cross sections measured in cosmic ray experiments.

Using data taken by SELEX during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, we study the production of charmed hadrons on copper and carbon targets with Sigma(-), p, pi(-), and pi(+) beams. Parametrizing the dependence of the inclusive production cross section on the atomic number A as A(alpha), we determine alpha for D(+), D(0), D(s)(+), D(+)(2010), Lambda(+)(c), and their respective anti-particles, as a function of their transverse momentum p(t) and scaled longitudinal momentum x(F). Within our statistics there is no dependence of alpha on x(F) for any charm species for the interval 0.1 < x(F) < 1.0. The average value of alpha for charm production by pion beams is alpha(meson) = 0.850 +/- 0.028. This is somewhat larger than the corresponding average alpha(baryon) = 0.755 +/- 0.016 for charm production by baryon beams (Sigma(-), p).

We present the first measurement of photoproduction of J/psi and of two-photon production of high-mass e(+)e(-) pairs in electromagnetic (or ultra-peripheral) nucleus-nucleus interactions, using Au + Au data at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The events are tagged with forward neutrons emitted following Coulomb excitation of one or both Au* nuclei. The event sample consists of 28 events with m(e+e-) > 2 GeV/c(2) with zero like-sign background. The measured cross sections at midrapidity of d sigma/dy (J/psi + Xn, y = 0) = 76 +/- 33 (stat) +/- 11 (syst) pb and d(2)sigma /dm dy (e(+) e(-) + Xn, y = 0) = 86 +/- 23(stat) +/- 16(syst) mu b/ (GeV/c(2)) for m(e+e-) epsilon vertical bar 2.0, 2.8 vertical bar GeV/c(2) have been compared and found to be consistent with models for photoproduction of J/psi and QED based calculations of two-photon production of e(+)e(-) pairs. In recent years, PHENIX has studied many important observables related to heavy-flavor physics through their leptonic decay measurements including the invariant yield of electrons from nonphotonic sources, and prompt single muons, both of which are dominated by D and B mesons. Charm and beauty cross-sections were measured and compared through single lepton, and lepton-hadron correlations in p+p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. Observables for quarkonia production such as invariant yield and polarization were also measured in p+p collisions. In Au+Au collisions, preliminary results for the R(AA) for single electrons and a 90% CL upper limit for the suppression of s were produced. And in d+Au collisions, a preliminary R(CP) study for J/psi production in different centrality ranges was extracted.

The use of roll-formed products in automotive, furniture, buildings etc. increases every year due to the low part-production cost and the complicated cross-sections that can be produced. The limitation with roll-forming until recent years is that one could only produce profiles with a constant cross-section in the longitudinal direction. About eight years ago ORTIC AB [1] developed a machine in which it was possible to produce profiles with a variable width (“3D roll-forming”) for the building industry. Experimental equipment was recently built for research and prototyping of profiles with variable cross-section in both width and depth for the automotive industry. The objective with the current study is to investigate the new tooling concept that makes it possible to roll-form hat-profiles, made of ultra high strength steel, with variable cross-section in depth and width. The result shows that it is possible to produce 3D roll-formed profiles with close tolerances.
