Des de la Xina a Regencós: correspondència familiar del bisbe missionista Vicenç Carreras, O. P. (1830-1867)

El fet que s'hagi conservat en un arxiu particular la correspondència d'aquest dominic d'origen baix-empordanès amb la seva família ens ha animat a redactar aquestes notes que ens permeten observar des d'un altre biaix (el que ofereix una documentació de caràcter personal i intimista) una qüestió d'interès històric general, a saber: la contribució de no pas pocs eclesiàstics catalans de mitjans segle XIX en la tasca d'evangelització i colonització dels anomenats territoris d'ultramar; contribució que s'ha d'inserir en una dinàmica constatable a tota l'Europa vuitcentista (especialment d'ençà el 1830) d'enfortiment del fenomen missioner (acompanyat sovint d'una certa aura romàntica i idealista) per part de les esglésies cristianes, ja fossin les protestants o la catòlica

Un viaje por los extremos. Eugeni d'Ors entre la Gran Guerra y el fascismo (1914-1923)

Esta tesis doctoral tiene como objetivo analizar el papel de Eugeni d’Ors como intelectual durante el período comprendido entre el inicio de la Gran Guerra y el comienzo de la dictadura de Primo de Rivera en España desde una triple perspectiva europea, española y catalana. Partiendo de este propósito general, tiene su justificación en dos objetivos generales que articulan tanto las argumentaciones como su estructura formal. En primer lugar, aportar una nueva documentación que ilumina algunos posicionamientos poco conocidos y unas relaciones con intelectuales y políticos que se alejan de las perspectivas de análisis de muchos de los autores que han estudiado su vida y su obra. En segunda instancia, pretende revisar algunos de los más importantes estudios sobre su figura que se realizaron implícita o explícitamente desde la perspectiva de los orígenes intelectuales del fascismo europeo establecida hace ya varias décadas por el historiador Zeev Sternhell.

Beyond Belief: Harry Potter in text and film

Despite the fact that the Harry Potter books have won a place in the cultural consciousness and have had enjoyed immense commercial success, they were not accepted within many faith groups at the outset. Using the term ‘religion’ to refers to any system of belief that may be recognised by symbols , I look extracts from three of the novels, alongside their subsequent cinematic adaptations, in order to consider the construction of representations of religion in the films and the contribution made by the films to this debate.

Pianos for the people: the manufacture, marketing and sale of pianos as consumer durables, 1850-1914

During the second half of the nineteenth century, British society experienced a rise in real incomes and a change in its composition, with the expansion of the middle classes. These two factors led to a consumer revolution, with a growing, but still segmented, demand for household goods that could express status and aspiration. At the same time technological changes and new ways of marketing and selling goods made these goods more affordable. This paper analyzes these themes and the process of mediation that took place between producers, retailers, and consumers, by looking at the most culturally symbolic of nineteenth century consumer goods, the piano.
