A glicosilação não-enzimática e o stress oxidativo representam dois processos importantes visto desempenharem um papel importante no que respeita às complicações de vários processos patofisiológicos. No presente, a associação entre a glicosilação não-enzimática e a oxidação de proteínas é reconhecida como sendo um dos principais responsáveis pela acumulação de proteínas não-funcionais que, por sua vez, promove uma contínua sensibilização para um aumento do stress oxidativo ao nível celular. Embora esteja disponível bastante informação no que respeita aos dois processos e suas consequências ao nível estrutural e funcional, permanecem questões por esclarecer acerca do que se desenvolve ao nível molecular. Com o objectivo de contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da relação entre a glicosilação não-enzimática e a oxidação, proteínas modelo (albumina, insulina e histonas H2B e H1) foram submetidas a sistemas in vitro de glicosilação não-enzimática e oxidação em condições controladas e durante um período de tempo específico. A identificação dos locais de glicosilação e oxidação foi realizada através de uma abordagem proteómica, na qual após digestão enzimática se procedeu à análise por cromatografia líquida acoplada a espectrometria de massa tandem (MALDI-TOF/TOF). Esta abordagem permitiu a obtenção de elevadas taxas de cobertura das sequências proteicas, permitindo a identificação dos locais preferenciais de glicosilação e oxidação nas diferentes proteínas estudadas. Como esperado, os resíduos de lisina foram os preferencialmente glicosilados. No que respeita à oxidação, além das modificações envolvendo hidroxilações e adições de oxigénio, foram identificadas deamidações, carbamilações e conversões oxidativas específicas de vários aminoácidos. No geral, os resíduos mais afectados pela oxidação foram os resíduos de cisteína, metionina, triptofano, tirosina, prolina, lisina e fenilalanina. Ao longo do período de tempo estudado, os resultados indicaram que a oxidação teve início em zonas expostas da proteína e/ou localizadas na vizinhança de resíduos de cisteína e metionina, ao invés de exibir um comportamente aleatório, ocorrendo de uma forma nãolinear por sua vez dependente da estabilidade conformacional da proteína. O estudo ao longo do tempo mostrou igualmente que, no caso das proteínas préglicosiladas, a oxidação das mesmas ocorreu de forma mais rápida e acentuada, sugerindo que as alterações estruturais induzidas pela glicosilação promovem um estado pro-oxidativo. No caso das proteínas pré-glicosiladas e oxidadas, foi identificado um maior número de modificações oxidativas assim como de resíduos modificados na vizinhança de resíduos glicosilados. Com esta abordagem é realizada uma importante contribuição na investigação das consequências do dano ‘glico-oxidativo’ em proteínas ao nível molecular através da combinação da espectrometria de massa e da bioinformática.

The domain of thermal therapies applications can be improved with the development of accurate non-invasive timespatial temperature models. These models should represent the non-linear tissue thermal behaviour and be capable of tracking temperature at both time-instant and spatial position. If such estimators exist then efficient controllers for the therapeutic instrumentation could be developed, and the desired safety and effectiveness reached.

This thesis explores the processes through which scarcity is constructed in informal settlements and how conditions emerging within its limits gives way to particular socio-spatial phenomena and influence the emergence of self-organisation and creative strategies from a non-expert perspective. At the same time, this thesis deconstructs these emerging tactics (reactive and transformative) in a diagrammatic way to generate a critical study of their potential for socio-spatial change that goes beyond the everyday survival. Most people associate scarcity with “not having enough” of something, most usually of a material nature. In contrast, this paper is based on the premise that scarcity is a constructed condition, therefore exploring it beyond its immediate manifestation and illustrating its discursive, distributive and socio-material components. In this line, the research uses Assemblage Theory as both an approach and a tool for analysis. This approach allows the research to depart from everyday narratives of the residents, and gradually evolve into a multi-scalar, non-linear reading of scarcity, by following leads into different realms and unpacking a series of routine events to uncover their connections to wider processes and particular elements affecting the settlement and the city as a whole. For this purpose, the research is based on a qualitative, flexible and multi-sited methodology, using different case studies as testing grounds. Collected data stems from a 11-months ethnographic fieldwork in informal settlements in Ecuador and Kenya, analysing the socio-spatial practices and strategies deployed by the different actors producing the built environment and arising from everyday and latent experiences of scarcity. The thesis examines the multi-scalar nature of these strategies, including self-building and management tactics, the mobilisation of grassroots organisations, the innovative ways of collaborating deployed by different coalitions and the reformulation of urban development policies. As outcomes of the research, the thesis will show illustrative diagrams that allow a better understanding of, firstly, the construction of scarcity in the built environment beyond its immediate manifestation and secondly, the way that emerging tactics a) improve existing conditions of scarcity, b) reinforce the status quo or c) contribute to the worsening of the original condition. Therefore, this thesis aims to offer lessons with both practical and theoretical considerations, by firstly, giving an insight into the complexity and transcalar nature of the construction of scarcity in informal settlements; secondly, by illustrating how acute conditions related to scarcity gives birth to a plethora of particular phenomena shaping the territory, social relationships and processes; and thirdly, by identifying specific characteristics within the informal that might allow for new readings of the city and possibilities for socio-spatial change under conditions of scarcity.

Volatile organic compounds are a common source of groundwater contamination that can be easily removed by air stripping in columns with random packing and using a counter-current flow between the phases. This work proposes a new methodology for the column design for any particular type of packing and contaminant avoiding the necessity of a pre-defined diameter used in the classical approach. It also renders unnecessary the employment of the graphical Eckert generalized correlation for pressure drop estimates. The hydraulic features are previously chosen as a project criterion and only afterwards the mass transfer phenomena are incorporated, in opposition to conventional approach. The design procedure was translated into a convenient algorithm using C++ as programming language. A column was built in order to test the models used either in the design or in the simulation of the column performance. The experiments were fulfilled using a solution of chloroform in distilled water. Another model was built to simulate the operational performance of the column, both in steady state and in transient conditions. It consists in a system of two partial non linear differential equations (distributed parameters). Nevertheless, when flows are steady, the system became linear, although there is not an evident solution in analytical terms. In steady state the resulting system of ODE can be solved, allowing for the calculation of the concentration profile in both phases inside the column. In transient state the system of PDE was numerically solved by finite differences, after a previous linearization.

A theory of free vibrations of discrete fractional order (FO) systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom (dof) is developed. A FO system with a finite number of dof is defined by means of three matrices: mass inertia, system rigidity and FO elements. By adopting a matrix formulation, a mathematical description of FO discrete system free vibrations is determined in the form of coupled fractional order differential equations (FODE). The corresponding solutions in analytical form, for the special case of the matrix of FO properties elements, are determined and expressed as a polynomial series along time. For the eigen characteristic numbers, the system eigen main coordinates and the independent eigen FO modes are determined. A generalized function of visoelastic creep FO dissipation of energy and generalized forces of system with no ideal visoelastic creep FO dissipation of energy for generalized coordinates are formulated. Extended Lagrange FODE of second kind, for FO system dynamics, are also introduced. Two examples of FO chain systems are analyzed and the corresponding eigen characteristic numbers determined. It is shown that the oscillatory phenomena of a FO mechanical chain have analogies to electrical FO circuits. A FO electrical resistor is introduced and its constitutive voltage–current is formulated. Also a function of thermal energy FO dissipation of a FO electrical relation is discussed.

Linear alkylbenzenes, LAB, formed by the Alel3 or HF catalyzed alkylation of benzene are common raw materials for surfactant manufacture. Normally they are sulphonated using S03 or oleum to give the corresponding linear alkylbenzene sulphonates In >95 % yield. As concern has grown about the environmental impact of surfactants,' questions have been raised about the trace levels of unreacted raw materials, linear alkylbenzenes and minor impurities present in them. With the advent of modem analytical instruments and techniques, namely GCIMS, the opportunity has arisen to identify the exact nature of these impurities and to determine the actual levels of them present in the commercial linear ,alkylbenzenes. The object of the proposed study was to separate, identify and quantify major and minor components (1-10%) in commercial linear alkylbenzenes. The focus of this study was on the structure elucidation and determination of impurities and on the qualitative determination of them in all analyzed linear alkylbenzene samples. A gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, (GCIMS) study was performed o~ five samples from the same manufacturer (different production dates) and then it was followed by the analyses of ten commercial linear alkylbenzenes from four different suppliers. All the major components, namely linear alkylbenzene isomers, followed the same elution pattern with the 2-phenyl isomer eluting last. The individual isomers were identified by interpretation of their electron impact and chemical ionization mass spectra. The percent isomer distribution was found to be different from sample to sample. Average molecular weights were calculated using two methods, GC and GCIMS, and compared with the results reported on the Certificate of Analyses (C.O.A.) provided by the manufacturers of commercial linear alkylbenzenes. The GC results in most cases agreed with the reported values, whereas GC/MS results were significantly lower, between 0.41 and 3.29 amu. The minor components, impurities such as branched alkylbenzenes and dialkyltetralins eluted according to their molecular weights. Their fragmentation patterns were studied using electron impact ionization mode and their molecular weight ions confirmed by a 'soft ionization technique', chemical ionization. The level of impurities present i~ the analyzed commercial linear alkylbenzenes was expressed as the percent of the total sample weight, as well as, in mg/g. The percent of impurities was observed to vary between 4.5 % and 16.8 % with the highest being in sample "I". Quantitation (mg/g) of impurities such as branched alkylbenzenes and dialkyltetralins was done using cis/trans-l,4,6,7-tetramethyltetralin as an internal standard. Samples were analyzed using .GC/MS system operating under full scan and single ion monitoring data acquisition modes. The latter data acquisition mode, which offers higher sensitivity, was used to analyze all samples under investigation for presence of linear dialkyltetralins. Dialkyltetralins were reported quantitatively, whereas branched alkylbenzenes were reported semi-qualitatively. The GC/MS method that was developed during the course of this study allowed identification of some other trace impurities present in commercial LABs. Compounds such as non-linear dialkyltetralins, dialkylindanes, diphenylalkanes and alkylnaphthalenes were identified but their detailed structure elucidation and the quantitation was beyond the scope of this study. However, further investigation of these compounds will be the subject of a future study.

Rédigés de manière non linéaire, "Monsieur Teste" (1946) de Paul Valéry et "Palomar" (1983) d’Italo Calvino posent les limites de l’intellection pure et les possibilités du texte littéraire à rendre compte d’une conscience, celle des sujets – Teste et Palomar – , comme les témoins réfléchis des phénomènes de l’univers. Bien qu’issus d’époques et de mouvements littéraires différents (poésie moderne française de l’entre-deux guerre chez Valéry, le néoréalisme italien chez Calvino) les deux auteurs parviennent néanmoins à une écriture comparable, qui valorise l’éclatement formel des catégories romanesques conventionnelles (intrigue, espace, temps, personnage) vers un nouveau réalisme, plus libre et moins contraignant. Que ce soit par le récit composites "Monsieur Teste" où Valéry met en scène Teste, un homme taciturne et solitaire vivant de l’intérieur, ou encore "Palomar" dont le protagoniste décide, un beau jour, d’arpenter du regard la moindre parcelle de l’univers, un élément demeure constant : le fragment, comme manière d’appréhender et de comprendre le monde et, par ricochet, de se saisir soir-même. L’analyse des incidences littéraires du fragment nous permettra d’interroger et de mettre en lumière, en les comparant, l’écriture fragmentaire de "Monsieur Teste" et "Palomar" comme la création d’une structure textuelle, mais aussi comme une forme donnant vie à un contenu : la pensée prenant conscience de ses actes.

Nous avons étudié la cohérence excitonique dans le poly[N- 9’-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4,7-di-2-thienyl-2’,1’,3’-benzothiadiazole] (PCDTBT). À l’aide d’un modulateur spatial de lumière, nous avons forgé des impulsions lasers ultracourtes permettant de sonder les cohérences du système. Nous nous sommes concentrés sur les propriétés cohérentes des états excitoniques, soit le singulet et l’état à transfert de charge. Nous avons observé que 35 fs après l’excitation, le singulet et l’état à transfert de charge sont toujours cohérents. Cette cohérence se mesure à l’aide de la visibilité qui est de respectivement environ 10% et 30%. De plus, nous avons démontré que les mécanismes permettant de générer du photocourant dans de tels dispositifs photovoltaïques ne sont déjà plus cohérents après 35 fs. Ces mesures révèlent une visibilité inférieure à 3%, ce qui est en deçà de la précision de nos instruments. Nous concluons donc que les états à transfert de charge ne sont pas les états précurseurs à la génération de photocourant, car ceux-ci se comportent très différemment dans les mesures de cohérences.

L'objectif du présent mémoire vise à présenter des modèles de séries chronologiques multivariés impliquant des vecteurs aléatoires dont chaque composante est non-négative. Nous considérons les modèles vMEM (modèles vectoriels et multiplicatifs avec erreurs non-négatives) présentés par Cipollini, Engle et Gallo (2006) et Cipollini et Gallo (2010). Ces modèles représentent une généralisation au cas multivarié des modèles MEM introduits par Engle (2002). Ces modèles trouvent notamment des applications avec les séries chronologiques financières. Les modèles vMEM permettent de modéliser des séries chronologiques impliquant des volumes d'actif, des durées, des variances conditionnelles, pour ne citer que ces applications. Il est également possible de faire une modélisation conjointe et d'étudier les dynamiques présentes entre les séries chronologiques formant le système étudié. Afin de modéliser des séries chronologiques multivariées à composantes non-négatives, plusieurs spécifications du terme d'erreur vectoriel ont été proposées dans la littérature. Une première approche consiste à considérer l'utilisation de vecteurs aléatoires dont la distribution du terme d'erreur est telle que chaque composante est non-négative. Cependant, trouver une distribution multivariée suffisamment souple définie sur le support positif est plutôt difficile, au moins avec les applications citées précédemment. Comme indiqué par Cipollini, Engle et Gallo (2006), un candidat possible est une distribution gamma multivariée, qui impose cependant des restrictions sévères sur les corrélations contemporaines entre les variables. Compte tenu que les possibilités sont limitées, une approche possible est d'utiliser la théorie des copules. Ainsi, selon cette approche, des distributions marginales (ou marges) peuvent être spécifiées, dont les distributions en cause ont des supports non-négatifs, et une fonction de copule permet de tenir compte de la dépendance entre les composantes. Une technique d'estimation possible est la méthode du maximum de vraisemblance. Une approche alternative est la méthode des moments généralisés (GMM). Cette dernière méthode présente l'avantage d'être semi-paramétrique dans le sens que contrairement à l'approche imposant une loi multivariée, il n'est pas nécessaire de spécifier une distribution multivariée pour le terme d'erreur. De manière générale, l'estimation des modèles vMEM est compliquée. Les algorithmes existants doivent tenir compte du grand nombre de paramètres et de la nature élaborée de la fonction de vraisemblance. Dans le cas de l'estimation par la méthode GMM, le système à résoudre nécessite également l'utilisation de solveurs pour systèmes non-linéaires. Dans ce mémoire, beaucoup d'énergies ont été consacrées à l'élaboration de code informatique (dans le langage R) pour estimer les différents paramètres du modèle. Dans le premier chapitre, nous définissons les processus stationnaires, les processus autorégressifs, les processus autorégressifs conditionnellement hétéroscédastiques (ARCH) et les processus ARCH généralisés (GARCH). Nous présentons aussi les modèles de durées ACD et les modèles MEM. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous présentons la théorie des copules nécessaire pour notre travail, dans le cadre des modèles vectoriels et multiplicatifs avec erreurs non-négatives vMEM. Nous discutons également des méthodes possibles d'estimation. Dans le troisième chapitre, nous discutons les résultats des simulations pour plusieurs méthodes d'estimation. Dans le dernier chapitre, des applications sur des séries financières sont présentées. Le code R est fourni dans une annexe. Une conclusion complète ce mémoire.

The thesis deals with certain quantum field systems exhibiting spontaneous symmetry breaking and their response to temperature. These models find application in diverse branches such as particle physics, solid state physics and non~linear optics. The nature of phase transition that these systems may undergo is also investigated. The thesis contains seven chapters. The first chapter is introductory and gives a brief account of the various phenomena associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking. The chapter closes with anote on the effect of temperature on quantum field systems. In chapter 2, the spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomena are reviewed in more detail. Chapter 3, deals with the formulation of ordinary and generalised sine-Gordon field theories on a lattice and the study of the nature of phase transition occurring in these systems. In chapter 4, the effect of temperature on these models is studied, using the effective potential method. Chapter 5 is a continuation of this study for another model, viz, the m6 model. The nature of phase transition is also studied. Chapters 5 and 6 constitute a report of the investigations on the behaviour of coupling constants under thermal excitation D1 $4 theory, scalar electrodynamics, abelian and non-abelian gauge theories

The country has witnessed tremendous increase in the vehicle population and increased axle loading pattern during the last decade, leaving its road network overstressed and leading to premature failure. The type of deterioration present in the pavement should be considered for determining whether it has a functional or structural deficiency, so that appropriate overlay type and design can be developed. Structural failure arises from the conditions that adversely affect the load carrying capability of the pavement structure. Inadequate thickness, cracking, distortion and disintegration cause structural deficiency. Functional deficiency arises when the pavement does not provide a smooth riding surface and comfort to the user. This can be due to poor surface friction and texture, hydro planning and splash from wheel path, rutting and excess surface distortion such as potholes, corrugation, faulting, blow up, settlement, heaves etc. Functional condition determines the level of service provided by the facility to its users at a particular time and also the Vehicle Operating Costs (VOC), thus influencing the national economy. Prediction of the pavement deterioration is helpful to assess the remaining effective service life (RSL) of the pavement structure on the basis of reduction in performance levels, and apply various alternative designs and rehabilitation strategies with a long range funding requirement for pavement preservation. In addition, they can predict the impact of treatment on the condition of the sections. The infrastructure prediction models can thus be classified into four groups, namely primary response models, structural performance models, functional performance models and damage models. The factors affecting the deterioration of the roads are very complex in nature and vary from place to place. Hence there is need to have a thorough study of the deterioration mechanism under varied climatic zones and soil conditions before arriving at a definite strategy of road improvement. Realizing the need for a detailed study involving all types of roads in the state with varying traffic and soil conditions, the present study has been attempted. This study attempts to identify the parameters that affect the performance of roads and to develop performance models suitable to Kerala conditions. A critical review of the various factors that contribute to the pavement performance has been presented based on the data collected from selected road stretches and also from five corporations of Kerala. These roads represent the urban conditions as well as National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads in the sub urban and rural conditions. This research work is a pursuit towards a study of the road condition of Kerala with respect to varying soil, traffic and climatic conditions, periodic performance evaluation of selected roads of representative types and development of distress prediction models for roads of Kerala. In order to achieve this aim, the study is focused into 2 parts. The first part deals with the study of the pavement condition and subgrade soil properties of urban roads distributed in 5 Corporations of Kerala; namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode. From selected 44 roads, 68 homogeneous sections were studied. The data collected on the functional and structural condition of the surface include pavement distress in terms of cracks, potholes, rutting, raveling and pothole patching. The structural strength of the pavement was measured as rebound deflection using Benkelman Beam deflection studies. In order to collect the details of the pavement layers and find out the subgrade soil properties, trial pits were dug and the in-situ field density was found using the Sand Replacement Method. Laboratory investigations were carried out to find out the subgrade soil properties, soil classification, Atterberg limits, Optimum Moisture Content, Field Moisture Content and 4 days soaked CBR. The relative compaction in the field was also determined. The traffic details were also collected by conducting traffic volume count survey and axle load survey. From the data thus collected, the strength of the pavement was calculated which is a function of the layer coefficient and thickness and is represented as Structural Number (SN). This was further related to the CBR value of the soil and the Modified Structural Number (MSN) was found out. The condition of the pavement was represented in terms of the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) which is a function of the distress of the surface at the time of the investigation and calculated in the present study using deduct value method developed by U S Army Corps of Engineers. The influence of subgrade soil type and pavement condition on the relationship between MSN and rebound deflection was studied using appropriate plots for predominant types of soil and for classified value of Pavement Condition Index. The relationship will be helpful for practicing engineers to design the overlay thickness required for the pavement, without conducting the BBD test. Regression analysis using SPSS was done with various trials to find out the best fit relationship between the rebound deflection and CBR, and other soil properties for Gravel, Sand, Silt & Clay fractions. The second part of the study deals with periodic performance evaluation of selected road stretches representing National Highway (NH), State Highway (SH) and Major District Road (MDR), located in different geographical conditions and with varying traffic. 8 road sections divided into 15 homogeneous sections were selected for the study and 6 sets of continuous periodic data were collected. The periodic data collected include the functional and structural condition in terms of distress (pothole, pothole patch, cracks, rutting and raveling), skid resistance using a portable skid resistance pendulum, surface unevenness using Bump Integrator, texture depth using sand patch method and rebound deflection using Benkelman Beam. Baseline data of the study stretches were collected as one time data. Pavement history was obtained as secondary data. Pavement drainage characteristics were collected in terms of camber or cross slope using camber board (slope meter) for the carriage way and shoulders, availability of longitudinal side drain, presence of valley, terrain condition, soil moisture content, water table data, High Flood Level, rainfall data, land use and cross slope of the adjoining land. These data were used for finding out the drainage condition of the study stretches. Traffic studies were conducted, including classified volume count and axle load studies. From the field data thus collected, the progression of each parameter was plotted for all the study roads; and validated for their accuracy. Structural Number (SN) and Modified Structural Number (MSN) were calculated for the study stretches. Progression of the deflection, distress, unevenness, skid resistance and macro texture of the study roads were evaluated. Since the deterioration of the pavement is a complex phenomena contributed by all the above factors, pavement deterioration models were developed as non linear regression models, using SPSS with the periodic data collected for all the above road stretches. General models were developed for cracking progression, raveling progression, pothole progression and roughness progression using SPSS. A model for construction quality was also developed. Calibration of HDM–4 pavement deterioration models for local conditions was done using the data for Cracking, Raveling, Pothole and Roughness. Validation was done using the data collected in 2013. The application of HDM-4 to compare different maintenance and rehabilitation options were studied considering the deterioration parameters like cracking, pothole and raveling. The alternatives considered for analysis were base alternative with crack sealing and patching, overlay with 40 mm BC using ordinary bitumen, overlay with 40 mm BC using Natural Rubber Modified Bitumen and an overlay of Ultra Thin White Topping. Economic analysis of these options was done considering the Life Cycle Cost (LCC). The average speed that can be obtained by applying these options were also compared. The results were in favour of Ultra Thin White Topping over flexible pavements. Hence, Design Charts were also plotted for estimation of maximum wheel load stresses for different slab thickness under different soil conditions. The design charts showed the maximum stress for a particular slab thickness and different soil conditions incorporating different k values. These charts can be handy for a design engineer. Fuzzy rule based models developed for site specific conditions were compared with regression models developed using SPSS. The Riding Comfort Index (RCI) was calculated and correlated with unevenness to develop a relationship. Relationships were developed between Skid Number and Macro Texture of the pavement. The effort made through this research work will be helpful to highway engineers in understanding the behaviour of flexible pavements in Kerala conditions and for arriving at suitable maintenance and rehabilitation strategies. In the theory of the Navier-Stokes equations, the proofs of some basic known results, like for example the uniqueness of solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equations under smallness assumptions on the data or the stability of certain time discretization schemes, actually only use a small range of properties and are therefore valid in a more general context. This observation leads us to introduce the concept of SST spaces, a generalization of the functional setting for the Navier-Stokes equations. It allows us to prove (by means of counterexamples) that several uniqueness and stability conjectures that are still open in the case of the Navier-Stokes equations have a negative answer in the larger class of SST spaces, thereby showing that proof strategies used for a number of classical results are not sufficient to affirmatively answer these open questions. More precisely, in the larger class of SST spaces, non-uniqueness phenomena can be observed for the implicit Euler scheme, for two nonlinear versions of the Crank-Nicolson scheme, for the fractional step theta scheme, and for the SST-generalized stationary Navier-Stokes equations. As far as stability is concerned, a linear version of the Euler scheme, a nonlinear version of the Crank-Nicolson scheme, and the fractional step theta scheme turn out to be non-stable in the class of SST spaces. The positive results established in this thesis include the generalization of classical uniqueness and stability results to SST spaces, the uniqueness of solutions (under smallness assumptions) to two nonlinear versions of the Euler scheme, two nonlinear versions of the Crank-Nicolson scheme, and the fractional step theta scheme for general SST spaces, the second order convergence of a version of the Crank-Nicolson scheme, and a new proof of the first order convergence of the implicit Euler scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations. For each convergence result, we provide conditions on the data that guarantee the existence of nonstationary solutions satisfying the regularity assumptions needed for the corresponding convergence theorem. In the case of the Crank-Nicolson scheme, this involves a compatibility condition at the corner of the space-time cylinder, which can be satisfied via a suitable prescription of the initial acceleration.
