Localization, which is the ability of a mobile robot to estimate its position within its environment, is a key capability for autonomous operation of any mobile robot. This thesis presents a system for indoor coarse and global localization of a mobile robot based on visual information. The system is based on image matching and uses SIFT features as natural landmarks. Features extracted from training images arestored in a database for use in localization later. During localization an image of the scene is captured using the on-board camera of the robot, features are extracted from the image and the best match is searched from the database. Feature matching is done using the k-d tree algorithm. Experimental results showed that localization accuracy increases with the number of training features used in the training database, while, on the other hand, increasing number of features tended to have a negative impact on the computational time. For some parts of the environment the error rate was relatively high due to a strong correlation of features taken from those places across the environment.

4B.05: Plasma Lasma copeptin is associated with insulin resistance in a Swiss population-based study
Resumo:
OBJECTIVE: Previous studies suggest that arginine vasopressin may have a role in metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes by altering liver glycogenolysis, insulin, and glucagon secretion and pituitary ACTH release. We tested whether plasma copeptin, the stable C-terminal fragment of arginine vasopressin prohormone, was associated with insulin resistance and MetS in a Swiss population-based study. DESIGN AND METHOD: We analyzed data from the population-based Swiss Kidney Project on Genes in Hypertension. Copeptin was assessed by an immunoluminometric assay. Insulin resistance was derived from the HOMA model and calculated as follows: (FPI x FPG)/22.5, where FPI is fasting plasma insulin concentration (mU/L) and FPG fasting plasma glucose (mmol/L). Subjects were classified as having the MetS according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Mixed multivariate linear regression models were built to explore the association of insulin resistance with copeptin. In addition, multivariate logistic regression models were built to explore the association between MetS and copeptin. In the two analyses, adjustment was done for age, gender, center, tobacco and alcohol consumption, socioeconomic status, physical activity, intake of fruits and vegetables and 24 h urine flow rate. Copeptin was log-transformed for the analyses. RESULTS: Among the 1,089 subjects included in this analysis, 47% were male. Mean (SD) age and body mass index were 47.4 (17.6) years 25.0 (4.5) kg/m2. The prevalence of MetS was 10.5%. HOMA-IR was higher in men (median 1.3, IQR 0.7-2.1) than in women (median 1.0, IQR 0.5-1.6,P < 0.0001). Plasma copeptin was higher in men (median 5.2, IQR 3.7-7.8 pmol/L) than in women (median 3.0, IQR 2.2-4.3 pmol/L), P < 0.0001. HOMA-IR was positively associated with log-copeptin after full adjustment (β (95% CI) 0.19 (0.09-0.29), P < 0.001). MetS was not associated with copeptin after full adjustment (P = 0.92). CONCLUSIONS: Insulin resistance, but not MetS, was associated with higher copeptin levels. Further studies should examine whether modifying pharmacologically the arginine vasopressin system might improve insulin resistance, thereby providing insight into the causal nature of this association.

-- Context: Excessive iron storage has been associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). Objective: To assess the association between markers of iron metabolism and MS in a healthy population. Design: Cross-sectional study conducted between 2003 and 2006. Setting: Population-based study in Lausanne, Switzerland. Patients: 5,498 participants aged 35-75 years, stratified by sex and menopausal status. Participants with transferrin saturation (TSAT) >50% were excluded. Intervention: None. Main Outcome Measures: serum iron, ferritin, transferrin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and TSAT. MS was defined according to ATP-III criteria. Results: Prevalence of MS was 29.4% in men, 8.3% in premenopausal and 25.5% in postmenopausal women. On bivariate analysis, the highest prevalence of MS occurred in the highest quartiles of serum ferritin, transferrin and TIBC, and in the lowest quartile of TSAT. After multivariate adjustment for age, body mass index, C-reactive protein, smoking, alcohol, liver markers and iron supplementation, men and postmenopausal women in the highest quartile of serum ferritin, transferrin and TIBC had a higher risk of presenting with MS: for ferritin, Odds ratio and [95% CI]=1.44 [1.07-1.94] for men and 1.47 [0.99-2.17] for postmenopausal women; for transferrin and TIBC, OR=1.43 [1.06-1.91] and 2.13 [1.44-3.15], Participants in the highest quartile of TSAT had a lower risk of MS: OR=0.77 [0.57-1.05] for men and 0.59 [0.39-0.90] for postmenopausal women. No association was found between iron and MS and between markers of iron metabolism and MS in premenopausal women. Conclusion: Ferritin, transferrin, TIBC are positively and TSAT is negatively associated with MS in men and postmenopausal women.

In Brazil, the State of Goiás is one of sugarcane expansion's frontiers to meet the growing demand for biofuels. The objective of this study was to identify the municipalities where there were replacement of annual crops (mainly grains) by sugarcane in the state of Goiás, as well as indicate correlations between the sugarcane expansion and the family farming production, in the period between 2005 and 2010. For this purpose, grains crop mask and sugarcane crop mask, obtained from satellite images, were intersected using geoprocessing techniques. It was also used IBGE data of sugarcane production and planted area, and data of family farming production linked with the National Food Acquisition Program (PAA), in relation to the number of cooperatives and family farmers. The crops masks and data tables of the National Food Acquisition Program were provided by National Food Supply Agency. There were 95 municipalities that had crops replacement, totaling 281,554 hectares of grains converted to sugarcane. We highlight the municipalities of Santa Isabel, Iaciara, Maurilândia, and Itapaci, where this change represented more than half of their agricultural areas. In relation to family farming, the sugarcane expansion in the state of Goiás has not affected their activities during the period studied.

The maternal history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) has been reported more frequently in patients with type 2 DM than paternal history. The aim of the present study was to determine if there was an association between maternal history of DM and the presence of chronic complications or metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with type 2 DM. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1455 patients with type 2 DM. All outpatients with type 2 diabetes attending the endocrine clinics who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included. Familial history of DM was determined with a questionnaire. Diabetic complications were assessed using standard procedures. The definition of MetS used was that of the World Health Organization and the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III report criteria. Maternal history of DM was present in 469 (32.3%), absent in 713 (49.1%) and unknown in 273 patients (18.7%). Paternal history of DM was positive in 255 (17.6%), negative in 927 (63.8%) and unknown in 235 patients (16.1%). The frequency of microvascular chronic complications in patients with and without a positive maternal history of DM was similar: diabetic nephropathy (51.5 vs 52.5%), diabetic retinopathy (46.0 vs 41.7%), and diabetic sensory neuropathy (31.0 vs 37.1%). The prevalence of macrovascular chronic complications and MetS was also similar. Patients with type 2 DM were more likely to have a maternal than a paternal history of DM, although maternal history of DM was not associated with an increased prevalence of chronic complications or MetS.

Patients with metabolic syndrome are at high-risk for development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. The objective of this study was to examine the major determinants of coronary disease severity, including those coronary risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, during the early period after an acute coronary episode. We tested the hypothesis that inflammatory markers, especially highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), are related to coronary atherosclerosis, in addition to traditional coronary risk factors. Subjects of both genders aged 30 to 75 years (N = 116) were prospectively included if they had suffered a recent acute coronary syndrome (acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris requiring hospitalization) and if they had metabolic syndrome diagnosed according to the National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III. Patients were submitted to a coronary angiography and the burden of atherosclerosis was estimated by the Gensini score. The severity of coronary disease was correlated (Spearman’s or Pearson’s coefficient) with gender (r = 0.291, P = 0.008), age (r = 0.218, P = 0.048), hsCRP (r = 0.256, P = 0.020), ApoB/ApoA ratio (r = 0.233, P = 0.041), and carotid intima-media thickness (r = 0.236, P = 0.041). After multiple linear regression, only male gender (P = 0.046) and hsCRP (P = 0.012) remained independently associated with the Gensini score. In this high-risk population, male gender and high levels of hsCRP, two variables that can be easily obtained, were associated with more extensive coronary disease, identifying patients with the highest potential of developing new coronary events.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its individual components on the renal function of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). A cross-sectional study was performed in 842 type 2 DM patients. A clinical and laboratory evaluation, including estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) calculated by the modification of diet in renal disease formula, was performed. MetS was defined according to National Cholesterol Education Program - Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Mean patient age was 57.9 ± 10.1 years and 313 (37.2%) patients were males. MetS was detected in 662 (78.6%) patients. A progressive reduction in eGFR was observed as the number of individual MetS components increased (one: 98.2 ± 30.8; two: 92.9 ± 28.1; three: 84.0 ± 25.1; four: 83.8 ± 28.5, and five: 79.0 ± 23.0; P < 0.001). MetS increased the risk for low eGFR (<60 mL·min-1·1.73 (m²)-1) 2.82-fold (95%CI = 1.55-5.12, P < 0.001). Hypertension (OR = 2.2, 95%CI = 1.39-3.49, P = 0.001) and hypertriglyceridemia (OR = 1.62, 95%CI = 1.19-2.20, P = 0.002) were the individual components with the strongest associations with low eGFR. In conclusion, there is an association between MetS and the reduction of eGFR in patients with type 2 DM, with hypertension and hypertriglyceridemia being the most important contributors in this sample. Interventional studies should be conducted to determine if treatment of MetS can prevent renal failure in type 2 DM patients.

The present study estimated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) according to the criteria established by the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and analyzed the contribution of social factors in an adult urban population in the Southeastern region of Brazil. The sample plan was based on multistage probability sampling according to family head income and educational level. A random sample of 1116 subjects aged 30 to 79 years was studied. Participants answered a questionnaire about socio-demographic variables and medical history. Fasting capillary glucose (FCG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides were determined and all non-diabetic subjects were submitted to the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Body mass index (BMI, kg/m²), waist circumference and blood pressure (BP) were determined. Age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of MS was 35.9 and 43.2% according to NCEP-ATPIII and IDF criteria, respectively. Substantial agreement was found between NCEP-ATPIII and IDF definitions. Low HDL-C levels and high BP were the most prevalent MS components according to NCEP-ATPIII criteria (76.3 and 59.2%, respectively). Considering the diagnostic criteria adopted, 13.5% of the subjects had diabetes and 9.7% had FCG ≥100 mg/dL. MS prevalence was significantly associated with age, skin color, BMI, and educational level. This cross-sectional population-based study in the Southeastern region of Brazil indicates that MS is highly prevalent and associated with an important social indicator, i.e., educational level. This result suggests that in developing countries health policy planning to reduce the risk of MS, in particular, should consider improvement in education.

INTRODUCTION: The population of patients undergoing renal transplantation is considered at highrisk for developing obesity and changes in lipid and glucose metabolism, due to the use of immunosuppressive drugs and increased food freedom in the post-transplant period. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in renal transplant recipients and to identify factors associated with its occurrence. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in renal transplant patients, with more than six months of follow-up. The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. RESULTS: Among the 87 pa- tients enrolled, 39 (44.8%) presented the phenotype of metabolic syndrome. The mean age of the patients was 43.5 ± 12.1 years-old, with a predominance of male (69.0%) and white (66.7%). The mean and median times of post transplant follow-up were 64.2 ± 49.4 and 56 months, respectively. All the 12 patients who developed post-transplant diabetes mellitus also met the criteria for metabolic syndrome, which compromised the inclusion of this variable in the logistic regression. In the univariate analysis, patients with metabolic syndrome had higher mean age (p = 0.008), higher median blood level of cyclosporine (p = 0.021), higher prevalence of history of coronary disease (p = 0.023), and they were more frequent users of beta (p = 0.011) and calcium- channel blockers (p = 0.039). In the multivariate analysis, age (HR = 1.06; 95% CI=1.01-1.11, p=0.006) and use of beta-blockers (HR = 4.02; 95% CI = 1.41 - 11.4, p = 0.009) were asso- ciated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome was highly prevalent in the population of renal trans- plant recipients studied, and it was associated with older age, use of beta-blockers, and post-transplant diabetes mellitus.
