A change in curriculum permitted a direct and simultaneous comparison between first and second year responses to group project work while assuming similar prior experience with this method of learning. Responses were obtained by a survey form and by meetings with individual groups. Overall, there were no differences between first and second year responses, although analyses of gender responses suggested trends whereby males indicated they had developed greater creativity and felt they had contributed more to the group. The majority of students responded that group project work was a positive experience and a useful learning experience.
Type 1 nitrergic (ND1) cells of the rabbit retina: Comparison with other axon-bearing amacrine cells
Resumo:
NADPH diaphorase (NADPHd) histochemistry labels two types of nitrergic amacrine cells in the rabbit retina. Both the large ND1 cells and the small ND2 cells stratify in the middle of the inner plexiform layer, and their overlapping processes produce a dense plexus, which makes it difficult to trace the morphology of single cells. The complete morphology of the ND1 amacrine cells has been revealed by injecting Neurobiotin into large round somata in the inner nuclear layer, which resulted in the labelling of amacrine cells whose proximal morphology and stratification matched those of the ND1 cells stained by NADPHd histochemistry. The Neurobiotin-injected ND1 cells showed strong homologous tracer coupling to surrounding ND1 cells, and double-labelling experiments confirmed that these coupled cells showed NADPHd reactivity. The ND1 amacrine cells branch in stratum 3 of the inner plexiform layer, where they produce a sparsely branched dendritic tree of 400-600 mum diameter in ventral peripheral retina. In addition, each cell gives rise to several fine beaded processes, which arise either from a side branch of the dendritic tree or from the tapering of a distal dendrite. These axon-like processes branch successively within the vicinity of the dendritic field before extending, with little or no further branching, for 3-5 mm from the soma in ventral peripheral retina. Consequently, these cells may span one-third of the visual field of each eye, and their spatial extent appears to be greater than that of most other types of axon-bearing amacrine cells injected with Neurobiotin in this study. The morphology and tracer-coupling pattern of the ND1 cells are compared with those of confirmed type 1 catecholaminergic cells, a presumptive type 2 catecholaminergic cell, the type 1 polyaxonal. cells, the long-range amacrine cells, a novel type of axon-bearing cell that also branches in stratum 3, and a type of displaced amacrine cell that may correspond to the type 2 polyaxonal cell. Our first study develops a measure of appetitive motivation and our second study compares several measures of Gray's (1987) behaviour activation system (BAS) in the prediction of the surface scales of personality. In particular, we were interested in determining the utility of the new appetitive motivation scale and Dickman's functional impulsivity scale. In comparison to other well-known measures, both scales were generally good predictors. We conclude that the appetitive motivation scale is a promising measure of BAS based upon construct validation. Contrary to previous studies which have suggested that BAS is a generally poor predictor of the surface scales of personality, we discovered appetitive motivation to be an important predictor of personality in general. Interestingly, the scale was also predictive of scores on the Baddeley reasoning test. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Hi content of Hickson Compact Groups in the southern hemisphere is measured using data from the Hi Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), and dedicated observations using the narrow band filter on the Multibeam instrument on the Parkes telescope. The expected Hi mass of these groups was estimated using the luminosity, diameter, and morphological types of the member galaxies, calibrated from published data. Taking careful account of non-detection limits, the results show that the compact group population that has been detected by these observations has an Hi content similar to that of galaxies in the reference field sample. The upper limits for the undetected groups lie within the normal range; improvement of these limits will require a large increase in sensitivity.
Gelatinisation of starch in mixtures of sugars. II. Application of differential scanning calorimetry
Resumo:
Differential scanning calorimetry was used to investigate the effect of mixtures of glucose and fructose, and five types of honeys on starch gelatinisation. At a 1:1 starch:water ratio, glucose generally increased the enthalpy (DeltaH(gel)) and temperatures (T-onset, T-peak and T-end) of gelatinisation more than fructose. Upon mixing, DeltaH(gel) of the low-temperature endotherm decreased in comparison to the sole sugars, but was fairly constant (7.7 +/- 0.33 J/g dry starch). DeltaH(gel) of the high-temperature endotherm increased with the fructose content. For both endotherms, the gelatinisation temperatures were unchanged (CV less than or equal to 3%) for the mixtures. With the honeys (moisture, 14.9-18.0%; fructose, 37.2-44.0%; glucose, 28.3-31.9%) added at 1.1-4.4 g per g dry starch, the enthalpy and temperatures of gelatinisation did not vary significantly (CV less than or equal to 6%). Typical thermograms are presented, and the results are interpreted in the light of the various proposed mechanisms for starch gelatinisation in sugar-water systems, total sugar content and possible sugar-sugar interactions. The thermograms were broader in the presence of the sugars and honeys, and a biphasic character was consistently exhibited. The application of an exponential equation to the gelatinisation temperatures of the starch-honey mixtures revealed an opposing influence of fructose and glucose during gelatinisation. The mechanism of starch gelatinisation may be better understood if techniques could be perfected to quantify breakage and formation of hydrogen bonds in the starch granules, and suggested techniques are discussed. Research on Chinese consumer behavior is dominated by studies of Chinese consumers as a whole, or studies of consumers in a single city or region. Comparative studies that take into account the cultural, economic and demographic differences between contrasting markets within China are poorly represented in the literature. The widening economic gap between rapidly developing coastal cities and less developed cities in more remote regions provides an opportunity for comparative consumer studies. In this research we compared the responses of buyers of imported fruit in two very different cites, Guangzhou (highly developed) and Urumqi (relatively undeveloped). Results revealed that buyers' beliefs and their evaluation of those beliefs towards the attributes of imported fruit were distinctly different. Factors such as the city's background, consumers' education level and the intended uses explained most of these differences. Results will help to broaden our understanding of Chinese consumer behavior and provide valuable information when formulating marketing strategies. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This communication reports a laboratory and plant comparison between the University of Cape Town (UCT) device (capillary) and the McGill University bubble sizing method (imaging). The laboratory work was conducted on single bubbles to establish the accuracy of the techniques by comparing with a reference method (capture in a burette). Single bubble measurements with the McGill University technique showed a tendency to slightly underestimate (4% for a 1.3 mm bubble) and the UCT technique to slightly overestimate (1% for the 1.3 man bubble). Both trends are anticipated from fundamental considerations. In the UCT technique bubble breakup was observed when measuring a 2.7 mm bubble using a 0.5 mm ID capillary tube. A discrepancy of 11% was determined when comparing the techniques in an industrial-scale mechanical flotation cell. The possible sources of bias are discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. This review paper compares the differences in prevalence, and environmental and genetic risk factors for Parkinson's disease between Chinese and Caucasian subjects. Comparison of age-specific prevalence between Chinese people and Caucasians suggests that the prevalence is lower in the Chinese ( at least in the past), although the prevalence rate in China appears to be rising. Distinctions in environmental risk factors and genetic factors are discussed. The difference in prevalence may be due to distinctions in environmental and genetic risk factors as well as the complex interaction between these environmental and genetic factors, although discrepancies in methodology for prevalence surveys can also be an explanation. This study examined the psychometric properties of the parent version of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS-P); 484 parents of anxiety disordered children and 261 parents in a normal control group participated in the study. Results of confirmatory factor analysis provided support for six intercorrelated factors, that corresponded with the child self-report as well as with the classification of anxiety disorders by DSM-IV (namely separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, social phobia, panic/agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and fear of physical injuries). A post-hoc model in which generalized anxiety functioned as the higher order factor for the other five factors described the data equally well. The reliability of the subscales was satisfactory to excellent. Evidence was found for both convergent and divergent validity: the measure correlated well with the parent report for internalizing symptoms, and lower with externalizing symptoms. Parent-child agreement ranged from 0.41 to 0.66 in the anxiety-disordered group, and from 0.23 to 0.60 in the control group. The measure differentiated significantly between anxiety-disordered children versus controls, and also between the different anxiety disorders except GAD. The SCAS-P is recommended as a screening instrument for normal children and as a diagnostic instrument in clinical settings. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Various marker systems exist for genetic analysis of horticultural species. Isozymes were first applied to the woody perennial nut crop, macadamia, in the early 1990s. The advent of DNA markers saw the development, for macadamia, of STMS (sequence-tagged microsatellite site), RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA), and RAF (randomly amplified DNA fingerprinting). The RAF technique typically generates dominant markers, but within the dominant marker profiles, certain primers also amplify multi-allelic co-dominant markers that are suspected to be microsatellites. In this paper, we confirm this for one such marker, and describe how RAF primers can be chosen that amplify one or more putative microsatellites. This approach of genotyping anonymous microsatellite markers via RAF is designated RAMiFi (randomly amplified microsatellite fingerprinting). Several marker systems were compared for the type, amount, and cost-efficiency of the information generated, using data from published studies on macadamia. The markers were also compared for the way they clustered a common set of accessions. The RAMiFi approach was identified as the most efficient and economical. The availability of such a versatile tool offers many advantages for the genetic characterisation of horticultural species.
