The innovation of optical frequency combs (OFCs) generated in passive mode-locked lasers has provided astronomy with unprecedented accuracy for wavelength calibration in high-resolution spectroscopy in research areas such as the discovery of exoplanets or the measurement of fundamental constants. The unique properties of OCFs, namely a highly dense spectrum of uniformly spaced emission lines of nearly equal intensity over the nominal wavelength range, is not only beneficial for high-resolution spectroscopy. Also in the low- to medium-resolution domain, the OFCs hold the promise to revolutionise the calibration techniques. Here, we present a novel method for generation of OFCs. As opposed to the mode-locked laser-based approach that can be complex, costly, and difficult to stabilise, we propose an all optical fibre-based system that is simple, compact, stable, and low-cost. Our system consists of three optical fibres where the first one is a conventional single-mode fibre, the second one is an erbium-doped fibre and the third one is a highly nonlinear low-dispersion fibre. The system is pumped by two equally intense continuous-wave (CW) lasers. To be able to control the quality and the bandwidth of the OFCs, it is crucial to understand how optical solitons arise out of the initial modulated CW field in the first fibre. Here, we numerically investigate the pulse evolution in the first fibre using the technique of the solitons radiation beat analysis. Having applied this technique, we realised that formation of higherorder solitons is supported in the low-energy region, whereas, in the high-energy region, Kuznetsov-Ma solitons appear.

Full text: Semiconductor quantum dot lasers are attractive for multipletechnological applications in biophotonics. Simultaneous two-state lasing ofground state (GS) and excited state (ES) electrons and holes in QD lasers ispossible under a certain parameter range. It has already been investigated in steady-stateoperations and in dynamical regimes and is currently a subject of the intesiveresearch. It has been shown that the relaxation frequency in the two-state lasingregime is not a function of the total intensity [1], as could be traditionallyexpected. In this work we study damping relaxation oscillations in QD lasersimultaneously operating at two transitions, and find that under variouspumping conditions, the frequency of oscillations may decrease, increase orstay without change in time as shown in Fig1.The studied QD laser structure wasgrown on a GaAs substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy. The active region includedfive layers of self-assembled InAs QDs separated with a GaAs spacer from a5.3nm thick covering layer of InGaAs and processed into 4mm-wide mesa stripe devices. The 2.5mm long lasers withhigh-and antireflection coatings on the rear and front facets lasesimultaneously at the GS (around 1265nm) and ES (around 1190nm) in the wholerange of pumping. Pulsed electrical pumping obtained from a high power (up to2A current) pulse source was used to achieve high output power operation. We simultaneously detect the total output and merely ES output using aBragg filter transmitting the short-wavelength and reflecting the long-wavelengthradiation. Typical QD does not demonstrate relaxation oscillations frequencybecause of the strong damping [2]. It is confirmed for the low (I<0.68A) andhigh (I>1.2 A) range of the pump currents in our experiments. The situationis different for a short range of the medium currents (0.68Alaser turns on andstarts to operate simultaneously. The frequency of oscillations may either significantlydecrease (from 2 GHz to 1 GHz) or sufficiently increase (from 2 GHz to 4 GHz)within 20 ns of the pulse duration. The oscilations appear simultaneously at GSand ES and are always damped, but can be either inphase or antiphase dependingon the pump current and temperature conditions. We address the excitation of the relaxation oscillations to non-instantaneousturn on of the pumping source which activates with 5ns rise time and discussthe swap of the oscillation's frequency in time to spectral shifts caused by thermaleffects. We present novel Terahertz (THz) emitting optically pumped Quantum Dot (QD) photoconductive (PC) materials and antenna structures on their basis both for pulsed and CW pumping regimes. Full text Quantum dot and microantenna design - Presented here are design considerations for the semiconductor materials in our novel QD-based photoconductive antenna (PCA) structures, metallic microantenna designs, and their implementation as part of a complete THz source or transceiver system. Layers of implanted QDs can be used for the photocarrier lifetime shortening mechanism[1,2]. In our research we use InAs:GaAs QD structures of varying dot layer number and distributed Bragg reflector(DBR)reflectivity range. According to the observed dependence of carrier lifetimes on QD layer periodicity [3], it is reasonable to assume that electron lifetimes can be potentially reduced down to 0.45ps in such structures. Both of these features; long excitation wavelength and short carriers lifetime predict possible feasibility of QD antennas for THz generation and detection. In general, relatively simple antenna configurations were used here, including: coplanar stripline (CPS); Hertzian-type dipoles; bow-ties for broadband and log-spiral(LS)or log-periodic(LP)‘toothed’ geometriesfor a CW operation regime. Experimental results - Several lasers are used for antenna pumping: Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser, as well as single-[4], double-[5] wavelength, and pulsed [6] QD lasers. For detection of the THz signal different schemes and devices were used, e.g. helium-cooled bolometer, Golay cell and a second PCA for coherent THz detection in a traditional time-domain measurement scheme.Fig.1shows the typical THz output power trend from a 5 um-gap LPQD PCA pumped using a tunable QD LD with optical pump spectrum shown in (b). Summary - QD-based THz systems have been demonstrated as a feasible and highly versatile solution. The implementation of QD LDs as pump sources could be a major step towards ultra-compact, electrically controllable transceiver system that would increase the scope of data analysis due to the high pulse repetition rates of such LDs [3], allowing real-time THz TDS and data acquisition. Future steps in development of such systems now lie in the further investigation of QD-based THz PCA structures and devices, particularly with regards to their compatibilitywith QD LDs as pump sources. With existing techniques for mode-locking, the bandwidth of ultrashort pulses from a laser is determined primarily by the spectrum of the gain medium. Lasers with self-similar evolution of the pulse in the gain medium can tolerate strong spectral breathing, which is stabilized by nonlinear attraction to the parabolic self-similar pulse. Here we show that this property can be exploited in a fiber laser to eliminate the gain-bandwidth limitation to the pulse duration. Broad (∼200 nm) spectra are generated through passive nonlinear propagation in a normal-dispersion laser, and these can be dechirped to ∼20-fs duration. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

Optical solitons are important in the modern photonics. Passively mode locked erbium doped fiber lasers provide a neat platform to study soliton dynamics. Soliton interaction dynamics is important for various applications and has quite different manifestations, including e.g. such as bound state solitons [1], soliton rains [2]. Soliton interactions have been observed with different mode locking approaches such as figure-of-eight [3] and nonlinear polarization rotation [4]. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have recently been widely applied as an efficient saturable absorber for passively mode locked fiber lasers. We have recently studied the polarization dynamics in a CNT mode locked vector soliton erbium doped fiber laser [5]. So far, the polarization dynamics of bound state solitons have yet to be investigated. In this report, we present a wide range of polarization dynamics of bound state solitons generated in a CNT mode locked erbium doped fiber laser. The fiber laser consists of ∼ 2 m highly doped erbium fiber (Liekki Er80-8/125) as the gain medium, an optical isolator to ensure unidirectional oscillation anda 980 nm laser diode is used to pump the gain through the 1550/980 nm wavelength division multiplexer. A fused 10:90 coupler is used to couple 10 % of the light out of the laser cavity and two in-line polarization controllers (NewPort) are used to control the birefringence of the cavity and polarization of the pump light respectively. The total cavity length is ∼ 7.8 m indicating a 25.7 MHz fundamental repetition rate. © 2013 IEEE.

The formation and evolution of bound dissipative pulses in the all-normal dispersion Yb-fiber laser based on a novel 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) are first investigated both numerically and experimentally. Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, the TFG and two polarization controllers (PCs) are exploited for stable self-started passive mode locking. Numerical results show that the formation of bound-state pulses in the all-normal dispersion region is the progress of soliton shaping through the dispersive waves and follows the soliton energy quantization effect. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the formation mechanism of bound-state pulses can be attributed to the high pump strength and effective filter bandwidth. The obtained bound-state dissipative pulses with quasi-rectangular spectral profile have fixed pulse separation as a function of pump power. © 2013 Astro Ltd.

We have proposed and demonstrated passive harmonic mode locking of an erbium doped fiber laser with soliton pulse shaping using carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol film. Two types of samples prepared by using filtration and centrifugation were studied. The demonstrated fiber laser can support 10th harmonic order corresponding to 245 MHz repetition rate with an output power of ~12 mW. More importantly, all stable harmonic orders show timing jitter below 10 ps. The output pulses energies are between 25 to 56 pJ. Both samples result in the same central wavelength of output optical spectrum with similar pulse duration of ~1 ps for all harmonic orders. By using the same laser configuration, centrifugated sample exhibits slightly lower pulse chirp. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We report a unidirectional frequency dissemination scheme for high-fidelity optical carriers deployable over telecommunication networks. For the first time, a 10 Gb/s Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) signal from an ultra-narrow linewidth laser was transmitted through a field-installed optical fibre with round-trip length of 124 km between Cork City and town of Clonakilty, without inline optical amplification. At the receiver, using coherent communication techniques and optical injection-locking the carrier was recovered with noise suppression. The beat signal between the original carrier at the transmitter and recovered carrier at the receiver shows a linewidth of 2.8 kHz. Long term stability measurements revealed fractional instabilities (True Allan deviation) of 3.3 × 10-14 for 1 s averaging time, prior to phase noise cancellation.

Ultrashort laser pulses from vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) have been receiving much attention in the semiconductor laser community since the first demonstration of sub-ps-pulsed devices more than a decade ago. Originally relying on semiconductor saturable-absorber mirrors for pulse formation, mode-locked operation has not only become accessible by using a variety of saturable absorbers, but also by using a saturable-absorber-free technique referred to as self-mode-locking (SML). Here, we highlight achievements in the field of SML-VECSELs with quantum-well and quantum-dot gain chips, and study the influence of a few VECSEL parameters on the assumed nonlinear lensing behavior in the system. © (2016) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). A mode locked fibre laser as a source of ultra-stable pulse train has revolutionised a wide range of fundamental and applied research areas by offering high peak powers, high repetition rates, femtosecond range pulse widths and a narrow linewidth. However, further progress in linewidth narrowing seems to be limited by the complexity of the carrier-envelope phase control. Here for the first time we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically a new mechanism of resonance vector self-mode locking where tuning in-cavity birefringence leads to excitation of the longitudinal modes sidebands accompanied by the resonance phase locking of sidebands with the adjacent longitudinal modes. An additional resonance with acoustic phonons provides the repetition rate tunability and linewidth narrowing down to Hz range that drastically reduces the complexity of the carrier-envelope phase control and so will open the way to advance lasers in the context of applications in metrology, spectroscopy, microwave photonics, astronomy, and telecommunications.

We present the operation of an ultrafast passively mode-locked fibre laser, in which flexible control of the pulse formation mechanism is readily realised by an in-cavity programmable filter the dispersion and bandwidth of which can be software configured. We show that conventional soliton, dispersion- managed (DM) soliton (stretched-pulse) and dissipative soliton mode-locking regimes can be reliably targeted by changing the filter’s dispersion and bandwidth only, while no changes are made to the physical layout of the laser cavity. Numerical simulations are presented which confirm the different nonlinear pulse evolutions inside the laser cavity. The proposed technique holds great potential for achieving a high degree of control over the dynamics and output of ultrafast fibre lasers, in contrast to the traditional method to control the pulse formation mechanism in a DM fibre laser, which involves manual optimisation of the relative length of fibres with opposite-sign dispersion in the cavity. Our versatile ultrafast fibre laser will be attractive for applications requiring different pulse profiles such as in optical signal processing and optical communications.
