A generalized acoustic equation is used to identify the mechanisms driving combustion instability. The relationship between the unsteady rate of heat release and the flow is found to influence significantly the frequency of oscillation. A kinematic flame model is reviewed and used to describe the unsteady combustion in a premixed ducted flame and in a typical lean premixed industrial gas turbine. Comparison is made between theory and experiment. | A generalized acoustic equation is used to identify the mechanisms driving combustion instability. Concerns over climate change mean engineers need to understand the greenhouse gas emissions associated with infrastructure projects. Standard coefficients are increasingly used to calculate the embodied emissions of construction materials, but these are not generally appropriate to inherently variable earthworks. This paper describes a new tool that takes a bottom-up approach to calculating carbon dioxide emissions from earthworks operations. In the case of bulk earthworks this is predominantly from the fuel used by machinery moving materials already on site. Typical earthworks solutions are explored along with the impact of using manufactured materials such as lime.

Outlines the possibility for wave power generation at artificial islands by construction of a breakwater. Reviews the development of wave energy systems, and describes several wave generators, e.g. the Mauritius lagoon system, the Nodding Duck, the oscillating cylinder, the oscillating water column and the Lancaster Bag. Applications and costs are outlined. (C.J.U.)

A method for the detection of knock using the sparking plug, and a system which allows the basic nature of the signal from the spark plug to be compared directly with that from an accelerometer are described. Results are presented for a range of engine speeds which highlight the problems and benefits of each sensing technique.

This paper describes the ways which are used at the present time by the Ford Motor Company for the detection of knock. A description of the available methods is given, and their relative effectiveness is assessed by analysing data taken simultaneously by all of these methods. It is shown that no one technique has an overwhelming advantage, but that each technique has its individual merits and demerits.

A foil bearing arrangement has been used to investigate the wear of carbon graphite materials running against 316 stainless steel in the presence of a hydrodynamic film of fluid contaminated with particulate material. As the thickness of the fluid film is reduced so the wear rate of the carbon reaches a maximum value, further reductions in thickness actually producing reduced wear rates. Possible mechanisms and implications of this behaviour are discussed.
