Thickness independence of true phase transition temperatures in barium strontium titanate films

The functional properties of two types of barium strontium titanate (BST) thin film capacitor structures were studied: one set of structures was made using pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) and the other using chemical solution deposition. While initial observations on PLD films looking at the behavior of T-m (the temperature at which the maximum dielectric constant was observed) and T-c(*) (from Curie-Weiss analysis) suggested that the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition was progressively depressed in temperature as BST film thickness was reduced, further work suggested that this was not the case. Rather, it appears that the temperatures at which phase transitions occur in the thin films are independent of film thickness. Further, the fact that in many cases three transitions are observable, suggests that the sequence of symmetry transitions that occur in the thin films are the same as in bulk single crystals. This new observation could have implications for the validity of the theoretically produced thin film phase diagrams derived by Pertsev [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1988 (1998)] and extended by Ban and Alpay [J. Appl. Phys. 91, 9288 (2002)]. In addition, the fact that T-m measured for virgin films does not correlate well with the inherent phase transition behavior, suggests that the use of T-m alone to infer information about the thermodynamics of thin film capacitor behavior, may not be sufficient. A new lead for nonpeptidic active-site-directed inhibitors of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus main protease discovered by a combination of screening and docking methods.

The coronavirus main protease, Mpro, is considered to be a major target for drugs suitable for combating coronavirus infections including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). An HPLC-based screening of electrophilic compounds that was performed to identify potential Mpro inhibitors revealed etacrynic acid tert-butylamide (6a) as an effective nonpeptidic inhibitor. Docking studies suggested a binding mode in which the phenyl ring acts as a spacer bridging the inhibitor's activated double bond and its hydrophobic tert-butyl moiety. The latter is supposed to fit into the S4 pocket of the target protease. Furthermore, these studies revealed etacrynic acid amide (6b) as a promising lead for nonpeptidic active-site-directed Mpro inhibitors. In a fluorimetric enzyme assay using a novel fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) pair labeled substrate, compound 6b showed a Ki value of 35.3 M. Since the novel lead compound does not target the S1', S1, and S2 subsites of the enzyme's substrate-binding pockets, there is room for improvement that underlines the lead character of compound 6b.

Detection of Lead Contamination of Water and VOC Contamination of Air Using SOI Micro-Optical Devices

Micro-photonic SOI Mach-Zehnder interferometers were coated with solid-phase micro-extraction materials derived from polydimethylsiloxane to enable sensing of volatile organic compounds of the BTEX class in air. A different coating based on functionalized mesoporous silicates is used to detect lead Pb(II) with a detection limit of <;; 100 ppb in water.

Electrode field penetration: A new interpretation of tunneling currents in barium strontium titanate (BST) thin films

This paper shows that penetration of the applied electric field into the electrodes of a ferroelectric thin film capacitor produces both an interfacial capacitance and an effective mechanism for electron tunneling. The model predictions are compared with experimental results on Au-BST-SrRuO3 capacitors of varying thicknesses, and the agreement is excellent.

Comment on the preparation of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethanoate: a unique monomeric, homoleptic pentacoordinate lead ethanoate complex

Atomic absorption spectroscopy of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethanoate ([emim](2)[O2CMe]), prepared according to International Patent WO 96/18459, showed it to contain large amounts of lead impurity: (ca. 0.5 M): [emim](2)[Pb(O2CMe)(4)] was isolated and shown crystallographically to contain the first known example of a monomeric, homoleptic pentacoordinate lead(ii) carboxylate complex, with a stereochemically active lone-pair.

The efficacy of lead shielding in megavoltage radiotherapy.

The dose received by anatomical structures which are apparently shielded by lead blocks during a course of megavoltage radiotherapy may not be negligible. The dose has three main components; there is that due to radiation transmitted through the shielding block, that due to radiation scattered within the patient and that due to radiation scattered prior to reaching the patient and so circumventing the shield. A calculation method which separates the three components has been investigated and the results have been compared with measurements in a wide range of test situations for both cobalt-60 and 6 MV photon beams. The method of calculation predicts the dose behind the shielding block with acceptable accuracy in all the conditions investigated.

Developing a conceptual model of lead performance measurement and benchmarking: A multiple case analysis

Purpose: Environmental turbulence including rapid changes in technology and markets has resulted in the need for new approaches to performance measurement and benchmarking. There is a need for studies that attempt to measure and benchmark upstream, leading or developmental aspects of organizations. Therefore, the aim of this paper is twofold. The first is to conduct an in-depth case analysis of lead performance measurement and benchmarking leading to the further development of a conceptual model derived from the extant literature and initial survey data. The second is to outline future research agendas that could further develop the framework and the subject area.

Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case analysis involving repeated in-depth interviews with managers in organisational areas of upstream influence in the case organisations.

Findings: It was found that the effect of external drivers for lead performance measurement and benchmarking was mediated by organisational context factors such as level of progression in business improvement methods. Moreover, the legitimation of the business improvement methods used for this purpose, although typical, had been extended beyond their original purpose with the development of bespoke sets of lead measures.

Practical implications: Examples of methods and lead measures are given that can be used by organizations in developing a programme of lead performance measurement and benchmarking.

Originality/value: There is a paucity of in-depth studies relating to the theory and practice of lead performance measurement and benchmarking in organisations.
