Single-sensor maximum power point tracking algorithms for photovoltaic systems are presented. The algorithms have the features, characteristics and advantages of the widely used incremental conductance (INC) algorithm. However; unlike the INC algorithm which requires two sensors (the voltage sensor and the current sensor), the single-sensor algorithms are more desirable because they require only one sensor: the voltage sensor. The algorithms operate by maximising power at the DC-DC converter output, instead of the input. © 2013 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Alternative and more efficient computational methods can extend the applicability of model predictive control (MPC) to systems with tight real-time requirements. This paper presents a system-on-a-chip MPC system, implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), consisting of a sparse structure-exploiting primal dual interior point (PDIP) quadratic program (QP) solver for MPC reference tracking and a fast gradient QP solver for steady-state target calculation. A parallel reduced precision iterative solver is used to accelerate the solution of the set of linear equations forming the computational bottleneck of the PDIP algorithm. A numerical study of the effect of reducing the number of iterations highlights the effectiveness of the approach. The system is demonstrated with an FPGA-in-the-loop testbench controlling a nonlinear simulation of a large airliner. This paper considers many more manipulated inputs than any previous FPGA-based MPC implementation to date, yet the implementation comfortably fits into a midrange FPGA, and the controller compares well in terms of solution quality and latency to state-of-the-art QP solvers running on a standard PC. © 1993-2012 IEEE.

A numerical study is presented showing the structural response and sound radiation from a range of thin shell structures excited by a point force: a baffled flat plate, a sphere, a family of spheroids and a family of closed circular cylinders. All the structures have the same material properties, thickness and total surface area so the asymptotic modal density is the same. Dramatic differences are shown in the total radiated sound power for the different shells. It was already known that the flat plate and the sphere behave very differently. These results show that the cylinders and, particularly, the spheroids show patterns that are not intermediate between the two but instead display new features: in certain frequency ranges the radiated sound power can be at least an order of magnitude greater than either the plate or the sphere. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

An easy-to-interpret kinematic quantity measuring the average corotation of material line segments near a point is introduced and applied to vortex identification. At a given point, the vector of average corotation of line segments is defined as the average of the instantaneous local rigid-body rotation over "all planar cross sections" passing through the examined point. The vortex-identification method based on average corotation is a one-parameter, region-type local method sensitive to the axial stretching rate as well as to the inner configuration of the velocity gradient tensor. The method is derived from a well-defined interpretation of the local flow kinematics to determine the "plane of swirling" and is also applicable to compressible and variable-density flows. Practical application to direct numerical simulation datasets includes a hairpin vortex of boundary-layer transition, the reconnection process of two Burgers vortices, a flow around an inclined flat plate, and a flow around a revolving insect wing. The results agree well with some popular local methods and perform better in regions of strong shearing. Copyright © 2013 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. This paper describes a new formulation of the material point method (MPM) for solving coupled hydromechanical problems of fluid-saturated soil subjected to large deformation. A soil-pore fluid coupled MPM algorithm based on Biot's mixture theory is proposed for solving hydromechanical interaction problems that include changes in water table location with time. The accuracy of the proposed method is examined by comparing the results of the simulation of a one-dimensional consolidation test with the corresponding analytical solution. A sensitivity analysis of the MPM parameters used in the proposed method is carried out for examining the effect of the number of particles per mesh and mesh size on solution accuracy. For demonstrating the capability of the proposed method, a physical model experiment of a large-scale levee failure by seepage is simulated. The behavior of the levee model with time-dependent changes in water table matches well to the experimental observations. The mechanisms of seepage-induced failure are discussed by examining the pore-water pressures, as well as the effective stresses computed from the simulations © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

In this paper we propose a new algorithm for reconstructing phase-encoded velocity images of catalytic reactors from undersampled NMR acquisitions. Previous work on this application has employed total variation and nonlinear conjugate gradients which, although promising, yields unsatisfactory, unphysical visual results. Our approach leverages prior knowledge about the piecewise-smoothness of the phase map and physical constraints imposed by the system under study. We show how iteratively regularizing the real and imaginary parts of the acquired complex image separately in a shift-invariant wavelet domain works to produce a piecewise-smooth velocity map, in general. Using appropriately defined metrics we demonstrate higher fidelity to the ground truth and physical system constraints than previous methods for this specific application. © 2013 IEEE.

The photon iterative numerical technique, which chooses the outputs of the amplified spontaneous emission spectrum and lasing mode as iteration variables to solve the rate equations, is proposed and applied to analyse the steady behaviour of conventional semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and gain-clamped semiconductor optical amplifiers (GCSOAs). Numerical results show that the photon iterative method is a much faster and more efficient algorithm than the conventional approach, which chooses the carrier density distribution of the SOAs as the iterative variable. It is also found that the photon iterative method has almost the same computing efficiency for conventional SOAs and GCSOAs.

A photonic crystal nanolaser consisting of only the shift of two lattice points was fabricated by HJ/Xe inductively coupled plasma etching. The room temperature lasing was observed by photopumping. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain calculation showed that the lasing mode has small modal volume close to (lambda/2n)(3).

In this paper, we constructed a Iris recognition algorithm based on point covering of high-dimensional space and Multi-weighted neuron of point covering of high-dimensional space, and proposed a new method for iris recognition based on point covering theory of high-dimensional space. In this method, irises are trained as "cognition" one class by one class, and it doesn't influence the original recognition knowledge for samples of the new added class. The results of experiments show the rejection rate is 98.9%, the correct cognition rate and the error rate are 95.71% and 3.5% respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the rejection rate of test samples excluded in the training samples class is very high. It proves the proposed method for iris recognition is effective.

In this paper, an n-type Si1-xGex/Ge (x >= 0.85) quantum cascade (QC) structure utilizing a deep Ge quantum well for electrons at the Gamma point is proposed. Based on linear interpolation, a conduction band offset at the Gamma point in a Si1-xGex/Ge ( x >= 0.85) heterostructure is presented, which is suitable for designing a QC laser. This approach has the advantages of a large conduction band offset at the Gamma point, a low lattice mismatch between the Si1-xGex/Ge ( x >= 0.85) active layers and the Si1-yGey ( y > x) virtual substrate, a small electron effective mass in the Gamma band, simple conduction energy band structures and a simple phonon scattering mechanism in the Ge quantum well. The theory predicts that if high-energy electrons are continuously injected into the Gamma band, a quasi-equilibrium distribution of electrons between the Gamma and L bands can be reached and held, i.e., electrons with a certain density will be kept in the Gamma band. This result is supported by the intervalley scattering experiments. In n-type Si1-xGex/Ge ( x >= 0.85) QC structures, population inversion between the laser's upper and lower levels is demonstrated.
