We study the signatures of rotational and phase symmetry breaking in small rotating clouds of trapped ultracold Bose atoms by looking at rigorously defined condensate wave function. Rotational symmetry breaking occurs in narrow frequency windows, where energy degeneracy between the lowest energy states of different total angular momentum takes place. This leads to a complex condensate wave function that exhibits vortices clearly seen as holes in the density, as well as characteristic local phase patterns, reflecting the appearance of vorticities. Phase symmetry (or gauge symmetry) breaking, on the other hand, is clearly manifested in the interference of two independent rotating clouds.

The formation of a hollow cellular sphere is often one of the first steps of multicellular embryonic development. In the case of Hydra, the sphere breaks its initial symmetry to form a foot-head axis. During this process a gene, ks1, is increasingly expressed in localized cell domains whose size distribution becomes scale-free at the axis-locking moment. We show that a physical model based solely on the production and exchange of ks1-promoting factors among neighboring cells robustly reproduces the scaling behavior as well as the experimentally observed spontaneous and temperature-directed symmetry breaking.

An analysis of cosmic string breaking with the formation of black holes attached to the ends reveals a remarkable feature: the black holes can be correlated or uncorrelated. We find that, as a consequence, the number-of-states enhancement factor in the action governing the formation of uncorrelated black holes is twice the one for a correlated pair. We argue that when an uncorrelated pair forms at the ends of the string, the physics involved is more analogous to thermal nucleation than to particle-antiparticle creation. Also, we analyze the process of intercommuting strings induced by black hole annihilation and merging. Finally, we discuss the consequences for grand unified strings. The process whereby uncorrelated black holes are formed yields a rate which significantly improves over those previously considered, but still not enough to modify string cosmology. 1995 The American Physical Society.

We introduce a new parameter to investigate replica symmetry breaking transitions using finite-size scaling methods. Based on exact equalities initially derived by F. Guerra this parameter is a direct check of the self-averaging character of the spin-glass order parameter. This new parameter can be used to study models with time reversal symmetry but its greatest interest lies in models where this symmetry is absent. We apply the method to long-range and short-range Ising spin-glasses with and without a magnetic field as well as short-range multispin interaction spin-glasses.

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) inhibit ice growth at sub-zero temperatures. The prototypical type-III AFPs have been extensively studied, notably by X-ray crystallography, solid-state and solution NMR, and mutagenesis, leading to the identification of a compound ice-binding surface (IBS) composed of two adjacent ice-binding sections, each which binds to particular lattice planes of ice crystals, poisoning their growth. This surface, including many hydrophobic and some hydrophilic residues, has been extensively used to model the interaction of AFP with ice. Experimentally observed water molecules facing the IBS have been used in an attempt to validate these models. However, these trials have been hindered by the limited capability of X-ray crystallography to reliably identify all water molecules of the hydration layer. Due to the strong diffraction signal from both the oxygen and deuterium atoms, neutron diffraction provides a more effective way to determine the water molecule positions (as D(2) O). Here we report the successful structure determination at 293 K of fully perdeuterated type-III AFP by joint X-ray and neutron diffraction providing a very detailed description of the protein and its solvent structure. X-ray data were collected to a resolution of 1.05 Å, and neutron Laue data to a resolution of 1.85 Å with a "radically small" crystal volume of 0.13 mm(3). The identification of a tetrahedral water cluster in nuclear scattering density maps has allowed the reconstruction of the IBS-bound ice crystal primary prismatic face. Analysis of the interactions between the IBS and the bound ice crystal primary prismatic face indicates the role of the hydrophobic residues, which are found to bind inside the holes of the ice surface, thus explaining the specificity of AFPs for ice versus water.

A laboratory study has been conducted with two aims in mind. The first goal was to develop a description of how a cutting edge scrapes ice from the road surface. The second goal was to investigate the extent, if any, to which serrated blades were better than un-serrated or "classical" blades at ice removal. The tests were conducted in the Ice Research Laboratory at the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research of the University of Iowa. A specialized testing machine, with a hydraulic ram capable of attaining scraping velocities of up to 30 m.p.h. was used in the testing. In order to determine the ice scraping process, the effects of scraping velocity, ice thickness, and blade geometry on the ice scraping forces were determined. Higher ice thickness lead to greater ice chipping (as opposed to pulverization at lower thicknesses) and thus lower loads. S~milabr ehavior was observed at higher velocities. The study of blade geometry included the effect of rake angle, clearance angle, and flat width. The latter were found to be particularly important in developing a clear picture of the scraping process. As clearance angle decreases and flat width increases, the scraping loads show a marked increase, due to the need to re-compress pulverized ice fragments. The effect of serrations was to decrease the scraping forces. However, for the coarsest serrated blades (with the widest teeth and gaps) the quantity of ice removed was significantly less than for a classical blade. Finer serrations appear to be able to match the ice removal of classical blades at lower scraping loads. Thus, one of the recommendations of this study is to examine the use of serrated blades in the field. Preliminary work (by Nixon and Potter, 1996) suggests such work will be fruitful. A second and perhaps more challenging result of the study is that chipping of ice is more preferable to pulverization of the ice. How such chipping can be forced to occur is at present an open question.

The objective of this research was to investigate the application of integrated risk modeling to operations and maintenance activities, specifically moving operations, such as pavement testing, pavement marking, painting, snow removal, shoulder work, mowing, and so forth. The ultimate goal is to reduce the frequency and intensity of loss events (property damage, personal injury, and fatality) during operations and maintenance activities. This report includes a literature review that identifies the current and common practices adopted by different state departments of transportation (DOTs) and other transportation agencies for safe and efficient highway operations and maintenance (O/M) activities. The final appendix to the report includes information for eight innovative O/M risk mitigation technologies/equipment and covers the following for these technologies/equipment: Appropriate conditions for deployment Performance/effectiveness, depending on hazard/activity Cost to purchase Cost to operate and maintain Availability (resources and references)

AbstractThis article analyses Jane Yolen's Briar Rose (1992) from the perspective of trauma studies as a novelistic transposition of "Sleeping Beauty" in the context of the Holocaust. It argues that the fairy tale fulfils a psychological and even existential role for the fictional survivor of the extermination camp, but also a pedagogical, moral and political one through the figure of the cowitness central to the economy of the novel. Through Becca's recovery of the biographical elements underlying her grandmother's retelling of the story, Yolen shows how the fairy tale can serve to communicate traumatic personal memories and transmit collective cultural knowledge to counter the disappearance of first-hand witnesses.RésuméCet article analyse le recours au conte de fées dans un roman récent de Jane Yolen, Briar Rose, qui transpose le conte de La Belle au bois dormant dans le contexte de l'Holocauste. A partir des études sur le traumatisme (trauma studies), il montre comment le conte de fées remplit plusieurs rôles: psychologique voire existentiel pour la survivante du camp, mais aussi didactique, politique et moral à travers la figure du co-témoin placée au coeur du dispositif narratif. Yolen fait ainsi appel à deux genres pédagogiques, le conte et la literature de jeunesse sur l'Holocauste comme outils pédagogiques permettant la transmission d'une mémoire individuelle et collective qui problématise la question épineuse de la représentation de l'Holocauste et de la fictionnalisation de l'histoire qui accompagne la disparition des témoins directs.

The emergence of chirality in enantioselective autocatalysis for compounds unable to transform according to the Frank-like reaction network is discussed with respect to the controversial limited enantioselectivity (LES) model composed of coupled enantioselective and non-enantioselective autocatalyses. The LES model cannot lead to spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) either in closed systems with a homogeneous temperature distribution or in closed systems with a stationary non-uniform temperature distribution. However, simulations of chemical kinetics in a two-compartment model demonstrate that SMSB may occur if both autocatalytic reactions are spatially separated at different temperatures in different compartments but coupled under the action of a continuous internal flow. In such conditions, the system can evolve, for certain reaction and system parameters, toward a chiral stationary state; that is, the system is able to reach a bifurcation point leading to SMSB. Numerical simulations in which reasonable chemical parameters have been used suggest that an ade- quate scenario for such a SMSB would be that of abyssal hydrothermal vents, by virtue of the typical temper- ature gradients found there and the role of inorganic solids mediating chemical reactions in an enzyme-like role. Underbody plows and High Speed Ice Blades are an integral part of clearing Iowa roads of snow and ice during winter operations. Changing these blades requires crews to suspend plowing operations and return to the garage decreasing time spent clearing roads and increasing workplace hazards. A blade with a longer lifespan is desired. The Department is determining if using plow blades that have been flame hardened increase longevity of use over the Departments current underbody plow blades that are oven baked. This would reduce downtime and employee exposure to workplace hazards and increase productivity per dollar spent.

In this study, several new cutting edges for removal of ice from the roadway were tested in a series of closed road tests. These new cutting edges consisted of a variety of serrated shapes. The study also included measurement of ice scraping forces by in-service trucks. These trucks were instrumented in a similar manner as the truck used in the closed-road tests. Results from the closed-road and in-service tests were analyzed by two parameters. The first parameter is the scraping effectiveness, which is defined as the average horizontal force experienced by a cutting edge. The amount of ice scraped from the roadway is directly proportional to the magnitude of the scraping effectiveness. Thus an increase in scraping effectiveness indicates an increase in the amount of ice being scraped from the roadway. The second parameter is force angle, which is defined as tan to the -1 power [vertical force/horizontal force]. A combination of a minimal force angle and a maximized scraping effectiveness represents a case in which the maximal amount of ice is being removed from the pavement without an exceptionally large vertical force. Results indicate that each cutting edge produced a maximal scraping effectiveness with a testing configuration of a 15 deg blade angle and a 23,000 lb. download force. Results also indicate that each cutting edge produced a minimal force angle with a testing configuration of a 15 deg blade angle and a 10,000 lb. download force. Results from the in-service trucks produced similar data and also similar trends within the data when compared to the results of the closed-road tests. This result is most important, as it suggests that the closed-road tests do provide an accurate measure of ice scraping forces for a given blade and configuration of that blade. Thus if the closed-road tests indicate that certain blades perform well, there is now excellent reason to conduct full scale tests of such blades.
