Today, Digital Systems and Services for Technology Supported Learning and Education are recognized as the key drivers to transform the way that individuals, groups and organizations “learn” and the way to “assess learning” in 21st Century. These transformations influence: Objectives - moving from acquiring new “knowledge” to developing new and relevant “competences”; Methods – moving from “classroom” based teaching to “context-aware” personalized learning; and Assessment – moving from “life-long” degrees and certifications to “on-demand” and “in-context” accreditation of qualifications. Within this context, promoting Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning, is currently a key issue in the public discourse and the global dialogue on Education, including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Flipped School Classrooms. This volume on Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning contributes to the international dialogue between researchers, technologists, practitioners and policy makers in Technology Supported Education and Learning. It addresses emerging issues related with both theory and practice, as well as, methods and technologies that can support Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning. An in-depth blueprint of the promise, potential, and imminent future of the field, Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning is necessary reading for researchers and practitioners, as well as, undergraduate and postgraduate students, in educational technology.

BACKGROUND Optimal surgery for pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid is controversial. In the present review, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches after addressing the surgical pathology of the parotid pleomorphic adenoma capsule and its influence on surgery. DATA SOURCES PubMed literature searches were performed to identify original studies. CONCLUSIONS Almost all pleomorphic adenomas can be effectively treated by formal parotidectomy, but the procedure is not mandatory. Extracapsular dissection is a minimal margin surgery; therefore, in the hands of a novice or occasional parotid surgeon, it may result in higher rates of recurrence. Partial superficial parotidectomy may be a good compromise. The tumor is removed with a greater cuff of healthy parotid tissue than in extracapsular dissection. This may minimize the recurrence rate. On the other hand, the removal of healthy parotid tissue compared with formal parotidectomy is limited, thus minimizing complications such as facial nerve dysfunction and Frey syndrome.

Volunteers are the most important resource for non-profit sport clubs seeking to bolster their viability (e.g. sporting programs). Although many people do voluntary work in sport clubs, stable voluntary engagement can no longer be granted. This difficulty is confirmed by existing research across various European countries. From a club management point of view, a detailed understanding of how to attract volunteers and retain them in the long term is becoming a high priority. The purpose of this study is (1) to analyse the influence of individual characteristics and corresponding organisational conditions on volunteering in sports clubs as well as (2) to examine the decision-making processes in relation to implement effective strategies for recruiting volunteers. For the first perspective a multi-level framework for the investigation of the factors of voluntary engagement in sports clubs is developed. The individual and context factors are estimated in different multi-level models based on a sample of n = 1,434 sport club members from 36 sport clubs in Switzerland. Results indicate that volunteering is not just an outcome of individual characteristics such as lower workloads, higher income, children belonging to the sport club, longer club memberships, or a strong commitment to the club. It is also influenced by club-specific structural conditions; volunteering is more probable in rural sports clubs whereas growth-oriented goals in clubs have a destabilising effect. Concerning decision-making processes an in-depth analysis of recruitment practices for volunteers was conducted in nine selected sport clubs (case study design) based on the garbage can model. Results show that the decision-making processes are generally characterised by a reactive approach in which dominant actors try to handle personnel problems of recruitment in the administration and sport domains through routine formal committee work and informal networks. In addition, it proved possible to develop a typology that deliver an overview of different decision-making practices in terms of the specific interplay of the relevant components of process control (top-down vs. bottom-up) and problem processing (situational vs. systematic). Based on the findings some recommendations for volunteer management in sport clubs are worked out.
Explaining Emergence and Consequences of Specific Formal Controls in IS Outsourcing – A Process-View

IS outsourcing projects often fail to achieve project goals. To inhibit this failure, managers need to design formal controls that are tailored to the specific contextual demands. However, the dynamic and uncertain nature of IS outsourcing projects makes the design of such specific formal controls at the outset of a project challenging. Hence, the process of translating high-level project goals into specific formal controls becomes crucial for success or failure of IS outsourcing projects. Based on a comparative case study of four IS outsourcing projects, our study enhances current understanding of such translation processes and their consequences by developing a process model that explains the success or failure to achieve high-level project goals as an outcome of two unique translation patterns. This novel process-based explanation for how and why IS outsourcing projects succeed or fail has important implications for control theory and IS project escalation literature.

An increasing number of clubs experience difficulties in recruiting and retaining sufficient numbers of volunteers to manage and staff their clubs (Lamprecht, Fischer, & Stamm, 2012). In order to facilitate volunteer recruitment, sport clubs need a specific strategy to recruit and retain volunteers for both formal positions and ad hoc tasks. Therefore, the intervention “More Volunteers in Football Clubs” was designed and its impact was evaluated in detail. The question this evaluation research wants to address is: Can football clubs recruit and retain volunteers successfully by implementing the intervention “More Volunteers in Football Clubs”? The designed intervention is based on the different expectations and needs of volunteers, as well as non-profit human resource management and organisational development management, with a strong emphasis on club-specific counseling and support. Task forces of the twelve participating football clubs attended four workshops in which they received tailor made counseling to reach the desired number of volunteers. The intervention has been implemented and its effectiveness tested in cooperation with the Swiss Football Federation with twelve Swiss football clubs following a pretest, intervention, posttest design Data have been gathered and analysed using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Outcome measurements are: volunteer rate, number of recruited volunteers, number of filled volunteer positions and volunteer satisfaction. Four months after the intervention all clubs that completed the proposed intervention were successful in recruiting the desired number of volunteers. Further, all participating clubs found the intervention helpful and would recommend other clubs to participate as well. With the development of this practical intervention a solution for football clubs is provided to overcome the difficulties in recruiting and retaining sufficient numbers of volunteers. Adaptive selling (AS) and customer-oriented selling (COS) constitute two key customer-directed selling behaviors for the success of the modern sales force. However, knowledge regarding the organizational factors that can induce salespeople to engage in those behaviors is strikingly limited. Against this background, we develop a comprehensive model that delineates the influences of formal and informal sales controls on AS and COS and, through them, on sales unit effectiveness. Based on a sample of sales managers in a major European Union country, we present new evidence that (a) formal and informal sales controls exert differential impact on salespeople's AS and COS behaviors; (b) AS directly and positively influences sales unit effectiveness; (c) COS affects sales unit effectiveness only indirectly, i.e. by fostering AS; and (d) outcome and cultural controls directly improve sales unit effectiveness. We conclude with a discussion of our findings for academics and practitioners.

La medicina tradicional no solamente sigue vigente en los Andes bolivianos, sino constituye la opción de primera elección para las familias rurales. Un estudio realizado en dos comunidades de la Subcentral Waka Playa, Municipio Tapacarí, muestra que los campesinos quechua-hablantes de los valles interandinos integran el sistema tradicional con el sistema de salud formal en el marco de sus estrategias familiares, reflejando un diálogo ínter-ontológico entre diferentes concepciones de salud y de enfermedad. A lo largo de una larga interacción con su entorno natural, los pobladores de los Andes han desarrollado concepciones específicas sobre el ser humano, su relación con la naturaleza, la salud y la enfermedad. Este proceso resultó en un sistema de salud complejo, donde intervienen expertos locales como son los curanderos-adivinos y los parteros y que se basa en un amplio uso y conocimiento de la flora y fauna nativas. A parte de estos conocimientos especializados, la medicina tradicional andina se expresa también en las prácticas terapéuticas diarias de la población, transmitidas y re-inventadas de generación en generación en el contexto de la familia y de la comunidad. La introducción del sistema de salud formal en el área de estudio en los años 90, representado por una posta de salud, impactó las comunidades locales principalmente por el acceso a vacunas – y la consecuente erradicación de algunas enfermedades - y a métodos contraceptivos. Sin embargo, la biomedicina es todavía de acceso muy limitado además de, según la población local, no tener la capacidad para curar ciertas enfermedades locales como el “susto,” el “mal viento” o la “colerina”. Como en otras áreas del conocimiento ecológico local, se observa una pérdida general de los conocimientos vinculados a la medicina tradicional andina debido a varios factores socioeconómicos, el más impactante siendo el proceso masivo de migración de las zonas rurales a los centros urbanos y al trópico boliviano. Sin embargo, estos conocimientos todavía se mantienen vigentes y son altamente valorizados por la población local, como un elemento del mantenimiento de sus formas de vida y de relacionamiento con la “Madre Tierra” (Pachamama). Las familias de Waka Playa integran la medicina tradicional y el sistema de salud formal en sus estrategias de vida, en diferentes grados según factores como la migración, la educación, el sexo y la edad. El uso de la flora medicinal local también es diferenciado según la localización de la vivienda principal de las familias y la consecuente concentración geográfica de sus actividades en las diferentes zonas de producción agroecológicas. Por ultimo, el interés personal influye sobre el grado y el tipo de conocimiento de cada familia. La medicina tradicional juega un rol fundamental en el bien-estar de las familias campesinas andinas y por ello constituye un potencial importante para un desarrollo sostenible. En esta perspectiva, la revalorización de los saberes locales y la construcción de puentes de diálogo con el sistema de salud local son sumamente importantes. Este punto de vista tiene perspectivas prometedoras en el contexto político actual boliviano, que apoya la medicina tradicional en el marco del reconocimiento de las identidades indígenas, en miras a un desarrollo endógeno.
