In this paper, discussions are focused on the growth of a nucleated void in a viscoelastic material. The in situ tensile tests of specimens made of high-density polyethylene, filled with spherical glass beads (HDPE/GB) are carried out under SEM. The experimental result indicates that the microvoid nucleation is induced by the partially interfacial debonding of particles. By means of the Laplace transform and the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method, a new analytical expression of the void strain at different nucleation times is derived. It can be seen that the strain of the nucleated void depends not only on the remote strain history, but also on the nucleation time. This expression is also illustrated by numerical examples, and is found to be of great usefulness in the study of damage evolution in viscoelastic materials.
Dislocations emission and crack extension at the atomistic crack tip in body-centered-cubic metal Mo
Resumo:
The behaviors of a crack in body-centered-cubic metal Mo under different loading modes were studied using the molecular dynamics method. Dislocation emission was observed near the crack tip in response to mode II loading with theta = 0 degrees in which theta is the inclination angle of the slip plane with respect to the crack plane, and two full dislocations were observed at the stress level of K-II = 1.17 MPa m(1/2) without any evidence of crack extension. Within the range of 0 degrees less than or equal to theta less than or equal to 45 degrees, crack extension was observed in response to mode I loading, and the effect of crystal orientation on the crack propagation was studied, The crack propagated along the [111] slip direction without any evidence of dislocations emission.

In this paper, a new phenomenological theory with strain gradient effects is proposed to account for the size dependence of plastic deformation at micro- and submicro-length scales. The theory fits within the framework of general couple stress theory and three rotational degrees of freedom omega(i) are introduced in addition to the conventional three translational degrees of freedom mu(i). omega(i) is called micro-rotation and is the sum of material rotation plus the particles' relative rotation. While the new theory is used to analyze the crack tip field or the indentation problems, the stretch gradient is considered through a new hardening law. The key features of the theory are that the rotation gradient influences the material character through the interaction between the Cauchy stresses and the couple stresses; the term of stretch gradient is represented as an internal variable to increase the tangent modulus. In fact the present new strain gradient theory is the combination of the strain gradient theory proposed by Chen and Wang (Int. J. Plast., in press) and the hardening law given by Chen and Wang (Acta Mater. 48 (2000a) 3997). In this paper we focus on the finite element method to investigate material fracture for an elastic-power law hardening solid. With remotely imposed classical K fields, the full field solutions are obtained numerically. It is found that the size of the strain gradient dominance zone is characterized by the intrinsic material length l(1). Outside the strain gradient dominance zone, the computed stress field tends to be a classical plasticity field and then K field. The singularity of stresses ahead of the crack tip is higher than that of the classical field and tends to the square root singularity, which has important consequences for crack growth in materials by decohesion at the atomic scale. The torsional impact response of a penny-shaped crack in an unbounded transversely isotropic solid is considered. The shear moduli are assumed to be functionally graded such that the mathematics is tractable. Laplace transform and Hankel transform are used to reduce the problem to solving a Fredholm integral equation. The crack tip stress fields are obtained. Investigated are the influence of material nonhomogeneity and orthotropy on the dynamic stress intensity factor. The peak value of the dynamic stress intensity factor can be suppressed by increasing the shear moduli's gradient and/or increasing the shear modulus in a direction perpendicular to the crack surface.

The scattering of general SH plane wave by an interface crack between two dissimilar viscoelastic bodies is studied and the dynamic stress, intensity factor at the crack-tip is computed. The scattering problem can be decomposed into two problems: one is the reflection and refraction problem of general SH plane waves at perfect interface (with no crack); another is the scattering problem due to the existence of crack. For the first problem, the viscoelastic wave equation, displacement and stress continuity conditions across the interface are used to obtain the shear stress distribution at the interface. For the second problem, the integral transformation method is used to reduce the scattering problem into dual integral equations. Then, the dual integral equations are transformed into the Cauchy singular integral equation of first kind by introduction of the crack dislocation density function. Finally, the singular integral equation is solved by Kurtz's piecewise continuous function method. As a consequence, the crack opening displacement and dynamic stress intensity factor are obtained. At the end of the paper, a numerical example is given. The effects of incident angle, incident frequency and viscoelastic material parameters are analyzed. It is found that there is a frequency region for viscoelastic material within which the viscoelastic effects cannot be ignored.

In this paper, the strain gradient theory proposed by Chen and Wang (2001 a, 2002b) is used to analyze an interface crack tip field at micron scales. Numerical results show that at a distance much larger than the dislocation spacing the classical continuum plasticity is applicable; but the stress level with the strain gradient effect is significantly higher than that in classical plasticity immediately ahead of the crack tip. The singularity of stresses in the strain gradient theory is higher than that in HRR field and it slightly exceeds or equals to the square root singularity and has no relation with the material hardening exponents. Several kinds of interface crack fields are calculated and compared. The interface crack tip field between an elastic-plastic material and a rigid substrate is different from that between two elastic-plastic solids. This study provides explanations for the crack growth in materials by decohesion at the atomic scale.

An asymptotic analysis for a crack lying on the interface of a damaged plastic material and a linear elastic material is presented in this paper. The present results show that the stress distributions along the crack tip are quite similar to those with HRR singularity field and the crack faces open obviously. Material constants n, mu and mo are varied to examine their effects on the resulting stress distributions and displacement distributions in the damaged plastic region. It is found that the stress components sigma(rr), sigma(theta theta), sigma(r theta) and sigma(e) are slightly affected by the changes of material constants n, mu and m(0), but the damaged plastic region are greatly disturbed by these material parameters.

A Dugdale-type cohesive zone model is used to predict the mode I crack growth resistance (R-curve) of metallic foams, with the fracture process characterized by an idealized traction-separation law that relates the crack surface traction to crack opening displacement. A quadratic yield function, involving the von Mises effective stress and mean stress, is used to account for the plastic compressibility of metallic foams. Finite element calculations are performed for the crack growth resistance under small scale yielding and small scale bridging in plane strain, with K-field boundary conditions. The following effects upon the fracture process are quantified: material hardening, bridging strength, T-stress (the non-singular stress acting parallel to the crack plane), and the shape of yield surface. To study the failure behaviour and notch sensitivity of metallic foams in the presence of large scale yielding, a study is made for panels embedded with either a centre-crack or an open hole and subjected to tensile stressing. For the centre-cracked panel, a transition crack size is predicted for which the fracture response switches from net section yielding to elastic-brittle fracture. Likewise, for a panel containing a centre-hole, a transition hole diameter exists for which the fracture response switches from net section yielding to a local maximum stress criterion at the edge of the hole.

The mode I plane strain crack tip field with strain gradient effects is presented in this paper based on a simplified strain gradient theory within the framework proposed by Acharya and Bassani. The theory retains the essential structure of the incremental version of the conventional J_2 deformation theory No higher-order stress is introduced and no extra boundary value conditions beyond the conventional ones are required. The strain gradient effects are considered in the constitutive relation only through the instantaneous tangent modulus. The strain gradient measures are included into the tangent modulus as internal parameters. Therefore the boundary value problem is the same as that in the conventional theory Two typical crack Problems are studied: (a) the crack tip field under the small scale yielding condition induced by a linear elastic mode-I K-field and (b) the complete field for a compact tension specimen. The calculated results clearly show that the stress level near the crack tip with strain gradient effects is considerable higher than that in the classical theory The singularity of the strain field near the crack tip is nearly equal to the square-root singularity and the singularity of the stress field is slightly greater than it. Consequently, the J-integral is no longer path independent and increases monotonically as the radius of the calculated circular contour decreases.

The strain gradient effect becomes significant when the size of fracture process zone around a crack tip is comparable to the intrinsic material length l, typically of the order of microns. Using the new strain gradient deformation theory given by Chen and Wang, the asymptotic fields near a crack tip in an elastic-plastic material with strain gradient effects are investigated. It is established that the dominant strain field is irrotational. For mode I plane stress crack tip asymptotic field, the stress asymptotic field and the couple stress asymptotic field can not exist simultaneously. In the stress dominated asymptotic field, the angular distributions of stresses are consistent with the classical plane stress HRR field; In the couple stress dominated asymptotic field, the angular distributions of couple stresses are consistent with that obtained by Huang et al. For mode II plane stress and plane strain crack tip asymptotic fields, only the stress-dominated asymptotic fields exist. The couple stress asymptotic field is less singular than the stress asymptotic fields. The stress asymptotic fields are the same as mode II plane stress and plane strain HRR fields, respectively. The increase in stresses is not observed in strain gradient plasticity for mode I and mode II, because the present theory is based only on the rotational gradient of deformation and the crack tip asymptotic fields are irrotational and dominated by the stretching gradient.

The issues and challenges of growing GaN-based structures on large area Si substrates have been studied. These include Si slip resulting from large temperature non-uniformities and cracking due to differential thermal expansion. Using an A1N nucleation layer in conjunction with an AlGaN buffer layer for stress management, and together with the interactive use of real time in-situ optical monitoring it was possible to realise flat, crack-free and uniform GaN and LED structures on 6-inch Si (111) substrates. The EL performance of processed LED devices was also studied on-wafer, giving good EL characteristics including a forward bias voltage of ∼3.5 V at 20 mA from a 500 μm × 500 μm device. © 2009 SPIE.

This paper presents an analysis of crack problems in homogeneous piezoelectrics or on the interfaces between two dissimilar piezoelectric materials based on the continuity of normal electric displacement and electric potential across the crack faces. The explicit analytic solutions are obtained for a single crack in piezoelectrics or on the interfaces of piezoelectric bimaterials. A class of boundary problems involving many cracks is also solved. For homogeneous materials it is found that the normal electric displacement D-2 induced by the crack is constant along the crack faces which depends only on the applied remote stress field. Within the crack slit, the electric fields induced by the crack are also constant and not affected by the applied electric field. For the bimaterials with real H, the normal electric displacement D-2 is constant along the crack faces and electric field E-2 has the singularity ahead of the crack tip and a jump across the interface.

We demonstrate the growth of crack-free blue and greenemitting LED structures grown on 2-inch and 6-inch Si(111) substrates by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE), using AlN nucleation layers and AlGaN buffer layers for stress management. LED device performance and its dependence on threading dislocation (TD) density and emission wavelength were studied. Despite the inherently low light extraction efficiency, an output power of 1.2 mW at 50 mA was measured from a 500 μm square planar device, emitting at 455 nm. The light output decreases dramatically as the emission wavelength increases from 455 nm to 510 nm. For LED devices emitting at similar wavelength, the light output was more than doubled when the TD density was reduced from 5×1 09 cm-2 to 2×109 cm-2. Our results clearly show that high TD density is detrimental to the overall light output, highlighting the need for further TD reduction for structures grown on Si. © 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A plane strain mode I crack tip field with strain gradient effects is investigated. A new strain gradient theory is used. An elastic-power law hardening strain gradient material is considered and two hardening laws, i.e. a separation law and an integration Law are used respectively. As for the material with the separation law hardening, the angular distributions of stresses are consistent with the HRR field, which differs from the stress results([19]); the angular distributions of couple stresses are the same as the couple stress results([19]). For the material with the integration law hardening, the stress field and the couple stress field can not exist simultaneously, which is the same as the conclusion([19]), but for the stress dominated field, the angular distributions of stresses are consistent with the HRR field; for the couple stress dominated field, the angular distributions of couple stresses are consistent with those in Ref. [19]. However, the increase in stresses is not observed in strain gradient plasticity because the present theory is based on the rotation gradient of the deformation only, while the crack tip field of mode I is dominated by the tension gradient, which will be shown in another paper.
