Evidence of a shape-dependent superheating of entrained nanosized Pb particles in a Zn matrix has been presented. It is shown that size dependence and pressure effects cannot explain the observed differences in melting points. The importance of crystallography and morphology at the microlevel at the interphase interface in controlling interfacial melting has been emphasized in order to explain the melting of entrained particles.

Numerical solutions are presented for the free convection boundary layers over cylinders of elliptic cross section embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium. The transformed conservation equations of the nonsimilar boundary layers are solved numerically by an efficient finite-difference method. The theory was applied to a number of cylinders and the results compared very well with published analytical solutions. The results are of use in the design of underground electrical cables, power plant steam, and water distribution lines, among others.

Zinc-10 and 20 wt pct Pb alloys have been rapidly solidified by melt spinning to obtain a very fine scale dispersion of nanometer-sized Pb particles embedded in Zn matrix. The microstructure and crystallography of the Pb particles have been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Each embedded Pb particle is a single crystal, with a truncated hexagonal biprism shape with the 6/mmm Zn matrix point group symmetry surrounded by and { 0001 á },\text { \text10[`\text1] \text0 },\text and { \text10[`\text1] \text1 }0001 1010 and 1011 facets. The Pb particles solidify with a well-defined orientation relationship with the Zn matrix of ( 0001 )Zn ||(111)Pb\text and\text [ \text11[`\text2] \text0 ]Zn| ||[ 1[`1] 0 ]Pb 0001Zn(111)Pb and 1120Zn110Pb . The melting and solidification behavior of the Pb particle have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Pb particles solidify with an undercooling of approximately 30 K, by heterogeneous nucleation on the {0001} facets of the surrounding Zn matrix, with an apparent contact angle of 23 deg.

Distributed Space-Time Block Codes (DSTBCs) from Complex Orthogonal Designs (CODs) (both square and non-square CODs other than the Alamouti design) are known to lose their single-symbol ML decodable (SSD) property when used in two-hop wireless relay networks using the amplify and forward protocol. For such a network, a new class of high rate, training-symbol embedded (TSE) SSD DSTBCs are proposed from TSE-CODs. The constructed codes include the training symbols within the structure of the code which is shown to be the key point to obtain high rate along with the SSD property. TSE-CODs are shown to offer full-diversity for arbitrary complex constellations. Non-square TSE-CODs are shown to provide better rates (in symbols per channel use) compared to the known SSD DSTBCs for relay networks when the number of relays is less than 10. Importantly, the proposed DSTBCs do not contain zeros in their codewords and as a result, antennas of the relay nodes do not undergo a sequence of switch on and off transitions within every codeword use. Hence, the proposed DSTBCs eliminate the antenna switching problem.

Interactive visualization applications benefit from simplification techniques that generate good-quality coarse meshes from high-resolution meshes that represent the domain. These meshes often contain interesting substructures, called embedded structures, and it is desirable to preserve the topology of the embedded structures during simplification, in addition to preserving the topology of the domain. This paper describes a proof that link conditions, proposed earlier, are sufficient to ensure that edge contractions preserve the topology of the embedded structures and the domain. Excluding two specific configurations, the link conditions are also shown to be necessary for topology preservation. Repeated application of edge contraction on an extended complex produces a coarser representation of the domain and the embedded structures. An extension of the quadric error metric is used to schedule edge contractions, resulting in a good-quality coarse mesh that closely approximates the input domain and the embedded structures.

It is argued that the nanometric dispersion of Bi in a Zn matrix is an ideal model system for heterogeneous nucleation experiments. The classical theory of heterogeneous nucleation with a hemispherical cap model is applied to analyse the nucleation data. It is shown that, unlike the results of earlier experiments, the derived site density for catalytic nucleation and contact angle are realistic and strongly suggest the validity of the classical theory. The surface energy between the 0001 plane of Zn and the <10(1)over bar 2> plane of Bi, which constitute the epitaxial nucleation interface, is estimated to be 39 mJ m(-2).

In this paper, the critical budding temperature of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which are embedded in one-parameter elastic medium (Winkler foundation) is estimated under the umbrella of continuum mechanics theory. Nonlocal continuum theory is incorporated into Timoshenko beam model and the governing differential equations of motion are derived. An explicit expression for the non-dimensional critical buckling temperature is also derived in this work. The effect of the nonlocal small scale coefficient, the Winkler foundation parameter and the ratio of the length to the diameter on the critical buckling temperature is investigated in detail. It can be observed that the effects of nonlocal small scale parameter and the Winkler foundation parameter are significant and should be considered for thermal analysis of SWCNTs. The results presented in this paper can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the thermal buckling properties of embedded single-walled carbon nanotubes. The quest for novel two-dimensional materials has led to the discovery of hybrids where graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) occur as phase-separated domains. Using first-principles calculations, we study the energetics and electronic and magnetic properties of such hybrids in detail. The formation energy of quantum dot inclusions (consisting of n carbon atoms) varies as 1/root n, owing to the interface. The electronic gap between the occupied and unoccupied energy levels of quantum dots is also inversely proportional to the length scale, 1/root n-a feature of confined Dirac fermions. For zigzag nanoroads, a combination of the intrinsic electric field caused by the polarity of the h-BN matrix and spin polarization at the edges results in half-metallicity; a band gap opens up under the externally applied ``compensating'' electric field. For armchair nanoroads, the electron confinement opens the gap, different among three subfamilies due to different bond length relaxations at the interfaces, and decreasing with the width.

Rapid solidification techniques can be used to produce the embedded nanoparticles in a desired matrix. The origin and morphology of these small particles and their transformation behaviour are still not fully understood. In this paper, we discuss the issues involved and present some interesting results in Al-Pb-In and Cu-Fe-Si systems.

This is an exploratory study to illustrate the feasibility of detecting delamination type of damage in polymeric laminates with one layer of magnetostrictive particles. One such beam encircled with excitation and sensing coils is used for this study. The change in stress gradient of the magnetostrictive layer in the vicinity of delamination shows up as a change in induced voltage in the sensing coil, and therefore provides a means to sense the presence of delamination. Recognizing the constitutive behavior of the Terfenol-D material is highly nonlinear, analytical expressions for the constitutive relations are developed by using curve fitting techniques to the experimental data. Analytical expressions that relate the applied excitation field with the stress and magnetic flux densities induced in the magnetostrictive layer are developed. Numerical methods are used to find the relative change in the induced voltage in the sensing coil due to the presence of delamination. A typical example of unidirectional laminate, with embedded delaminations, is used for the simulation purposes. This exploratory study illustrates that the open-circuit voltage induced in the sensing coil changes significantly (as large of 68 millivolts) with the occurrence of delamination. This feature can be exploited for device off-line inspection techniques and/or linking monitoring procedures for practical applications.

We have synthesized specimens of nanometric lead dispersion in a glassy Al-Cu-V matrix by rapid solidification of the corresponding melt. The microstructure has been designed to avoid superconducting percolation due to coupling of the neighboring particles by the proximity effect. Using these specimens, we have determined quantitatively the effect of size of the ultrafine lead particles on the superconducting transition. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. The melting and solidification of nanoscale Bi particles embedded in a glassy and crystalline matrix

We report the formation of an amorphous phase in nanosized Pi particles embedded in an Al-based glassy alloy matrix. High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) has been used to show that the particles contain crystalline and amorphous portions. A depression of the melting point by more than 100 K of the crystalline portion of the Pi particles was found by differential scanning calorimetric studies and by in-situ electron microscopy using a heating stage. The same techniques established the absence of an amorphous phase in the particles when the matrix is crystallized. It is shown that the formation of the amorphous phase and the depression of the melting point cannot be explained by the pressure developed by the volume change during solidification in this constrained system.

Recently, a special class of complex designs called Training-Embedded Complex Orthogonal Designs (TE-CODs) has been introduced to construct single-symbol Maximum Likelihood decodable (SSD) distributed space-time block codes (DSTBCs) for two-hop wireless relay networks using the amplify and forward protocol. However, to implement DSTBCs from square TE-CODs, the overhead due to the transmission of training symbols becomes prohibitively large as the number of relays increase. In this paper, we propose TE-Coordinate Interleaved Orthogonal Designs (TE-CIODs) to construct SSD DSTBCs. Exploiting the block diagonal structure of TE-CIODs, we show that the overhead due to the transmission of training symbols to implement DSTBCs from TE-CIODs is smaller than that for TE-CODs. We also show that DSTBCs from TE-CIODs offer higher rate than those from TE-CODs for identical number of relays while maintaining the SSD and full-diversity properties.
