O presente trabalho deriva do Projeto GALP 20–20-20 implementado na empresa Primus Vitória, em parceria com a Universidade de Aveiro. A empresa na qual foi efetuado o estágio produz azulejos para revestimento, estando situada na Zona Industrial de Taboeira. Este relatório expõe a caracterização energética da Primus Vitória, onde são apresentados consumos de energia elétrica e gás natural nos diversos sectores produtivos, relação entre consumos energéticos globais e a produção de azulejos e ainda os indicadores energéticos da mesma. Através deste estudo foi possível a criação de medidas de eficiência energética passíveis de implementação, aplicadas a equipamentos consumidores de energia elétrica, através da substituição do motor elétrico existente no setor da aspiração, e de gás natural, otimizando o funcionamento da plastificadora para sequencial, com o devido impacte no consumo final de energia. Como trabalho futuro propõe-se o desenvolvimento de um plano de monotorização de consumos energéticos com o intuito de obter um controle rigoroso dos mesmos reduzindo possíveis perdas e identificando possíveis defeitos no processo produtivo.

The industrial production of aluminium is an electrolysis process where two superposed horizontal liquid layers are subjected to a mainly vertical electric current supplied by carbon electrodes. The lower layer consists of molten aluminium and lies on the cathode. The upper layer is the electrolyte and is covered by the anode. The interface between the two layers is often perturbed, leading to oscillations, or waves, similar to the waves on the surface of seas or lakes. The presence of electric currents and the resulting magnetic field are responsible for electromagnetic (Lorentz) forces within the fluid, which can amplify these oscillations and have an adverse influence on the process. The electrolytic bath vertical to horizontal aspect ratio is such, that it is advantageous to use the shallow water equations to model the interface motion. These are the depth-averaging the Navier-Stokes equations so that nonlinear and dispersion terms may be taken into account. Although these terms are essential to the prediction of wave dynamics, they are neglected in most of the literature on interface instabilities in aluminium reduction cells where only the linear theory is usually considered. The unknown variables are the two horizontal components of the fluid velocity, the height of the interface and the electric potential. In this application, a finite volume resolution of the double-layer shallow water equations including the electromagnetic sources has been developed, for incorporation into a generic three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code that also deals with heat transfer within the cell.

La Formule SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) est une compétition étudiante consistant en la conception et la fabrication d’une voiture de course monoplace. De nombreux événements sont organisés à chaque année au cours desquels plusieurs universités rivalisent entre elles lors d’épreuves dynamiques et statiques. Celles-ci comprennent l’évaluation de la conception, l’évaluation des coûts de fabrication, l’accélération de la voiture, etc. Avec plus de 500 universités participantes et des événements annuels sur tous les continents, il s’agit de la plus importante compétition d’ingénierie étudiante au monde. L’équipe ULaval Racing a participé pendant plus de 20 ans aux compétitions annuelles réservées aux voitures à combustion. Afin de s’adapter à l’électrification des transports et aux nouvelles compétitions destinées aux voitures électriques, l’équipe a conçu et fabriqué une chaîne de traction électrique haute performance destinée à leur voiture 2015. L’approche traditionnelle employée pour concevoir une motorisation électrique consiste à imposer les performances désirées. Ces critères comprennent l’inclinaison maximale que la voiture doit pouvoir gravir, l’autonomie désirée ainsi qu’un profil de vitesse en fonction du temps, ou tout simplement un cycle routier. Cette approche n’est malheureusement pas appropriée pour la conception d’une traction électrique pour une voiture de type Formule SAE. Ce véhicule n’étant pas destiné à la conduite urbaine ou à la conduite sur autoroute, les cycles routiers existants ne sont pas représentatifs des conditions d’opération du bolide à concevoir. Ainsi, la réalisation de ce projet a nécessité l’identification du cycle d’opération routier sur lequel le véhicule doit opérer. Il sert de point de départ à la conception de la chaîne de traction composée des moteurs, de la batterie ainsi que des onduleurs de tension. L’utilisation d’une méthode de dimensionnement du système basée sur un algorithme d’optimisation génétique, suivie d’une optimisation locale couplée à une analyse par éléments-finis a permis l’obtention d’une solution optimale pour les circuits de type Formule SAE. La chaîne de traction conçue a été fabriquée et intégrée dans un prototype de voiture de l’équipe ULaval Racing lors de la saison 2015 afin de participer à diverses compétitions de voitures électriques.

The asynchronous polyphase induction motor has been the motor of choice in industrial settings for about the past half century because power electronics can be used to control its output behavior. Before that, the dc motor was widely used because of its easy speed and torque controllability. The two main reasons why this might be are its ruggedness and low cost. The induction motor is a rugged machine because it is brushless and has fewer internal parts that need maintenance or replacement. This makes it low cost in comparison to other motors, such as the dc motor. Because of these facts, the induction motor and drive system have been gaining market share in industry and even in alternative applications such as hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles. The subject of this thesis is to ascertain various control algorithms’ advantages and disadvantages and give recommendations for their use under certain conditions and in distinct applications. Four drives will be compared as fairly as possible by comparing their parameter sensitivities, dynamic responses, and steady-state errors. Different switching techniques are used to show that the motor drive is separate from the switching scheme; changing the switching scheme produces entirely different responses for each motor drive.

O presente trabalho descreve um estudo sobre a metodologia matemática para a solução do problema direto e inverso na Tomografia por Impedância Elétrica. Este estudo foi motivado pela necessidade de compreender o problema inverso e sua utilidade na formação de imagens por Tomografia por Impedância Elétrica. O entendimento deste estudo possibilitou constatar, através de equações e programas, a identificação das estruturas internas que constituem um corpo. Para isto, primeiramente, é preciso conhecer os potencias elétricos adquiridos nas fronteiras do corpo. Estes potenciais são adquiridos pela aplicação de uma corrente elétrica e resolvidos matematicamente pelo problema direto através da equação de Laplace. O Método dos Elementos Finitos em conjunção com as equações oriundas do eletromagnetismo é utilizado para resolver o problema direto. O software EIDORS, contudo, através dos conceitos de problema direto e inverso, reconstrói imagens de Tomografia por Impedância Elétrica que possibilitam visualizar e comparar diferentes métodos de resolução do problema inverso para reconstrução de estruturas internas. Os métodos de Tikhonov, Noser, Laplace, Hiperparamétrico e Variação Total foram utilizados para obter uma solução aproximada (regularizada) para o problema de identificação. Na Tomografia por Impedância Elétrica, com as condições de contorno preestabelecidas de corrente elétricas e regiões definidas, o método hiperparamétrico apresentou uma solução aproximada mais adequada para reconstrução da imagem.

We study a quantum Otto engine operating on the basis of a helical spin-1/2 multiferroic chain with strongly coupled magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. The presence of a finite spin chirality in the working substance enables steering of the cycle by an external electric field that couples to the electric polarization. We observe a direct connection between the chirality, the entanglement and the efficiency of the engine. An electric-field dependent threshold temperature is identified, above which the pair correlations in the system, as quantified by the thermal entanglement, diminish. In contrast to the pair correlations, the collective many-body thermal entanglement is less sensitive to the electric field, and in the high temperature limit converges to a constant value. We also discuss the correlations between the threshold temperature of the pair entanglement, the spin chirality and the minimum of the fidelities in relation to the electric and magnetic fields. The efficiency of the quantum Otto cycle shows a saturation plateau with increasing electric field amplitude.

Generalised refraction is a topic which has, thus far, garnered far less attention than it deserves. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the potential that generalised refraction has to offer with regards to imaging and its application to designing new passive optical devices. Specifically in this thesis we will explore two types of gener- alised refraction which takes place across a planar interface: refraction by generalised confocal lenslet arrays (gCLAs), and refraction by ray-rotation sheets. We will show that the corresponding laws of refraction for these interfaces produce, in general, light-ray fields with non-zero curl, and as such do not have a corresponding outgoing waveform. We will then show that gCLAs perform integral, geometrical imaging, and that this enables them to be considered as approximate realisations of metric tensor interfaces. The concept of piecewise transformation optics will be introduced and we will show that it is possible to use gCLAs along with other optical elements such as lenses to design simple piecewise transformation-optics devices such as invisibility cloaks and insulation windows. Finally, we shall show that ray-rotation sheets can be interpreted as performing geometrical imaging into complex space, and that as a consequence, ray-rotation sheets and gCLAs may in fact be more closely related than first realised. We conclude with a summary of potential future projects which lead naturally from the results of this thesis.

Natural nanoclays are of great interest particularly for the production of polymer-based nanocomposites. In this work, kaolinite clays from two natural deposits in the State of the Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba were purified with thermal treatment and chemical treatments, and characterized. Front to the gotten data, had been proposals methodologies for elimination or reduction of coarse particle texts, oxide of iron and organic substance. These methodologies had consisted of the combination of operations with thermal treatments, carried through in electric oven, and acid chemical attacks with and hydrogen peroxide. The Analyzers Thermogravimetric was used to examine the thermal stability of the nanoclays. The analysis indicated weight losses at temperatures under 110 ºC and over the temperature range of 350 to 550 ºC. Based on the thermal analysis data, the samples were submitted to a thermal treatment at 500 °C, for 8 h, to remove organic components. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that thermal treatment under 500 °C affect the basic structure of kaolinite. The BET surface area measurements ranged from 32 to 38 m2/g for clay samples with thermal treatment and from 36 to 53 m2/g for chemically treated samples. Thus, although the thermal treatment increased the surface area, through the removal of organic components, the effect was not significant and chemical treatment is more efficient, not affect the basic structure of kaolinite, to improve particle dispersion. The red pottery industry in Piauí state is well developed and stands out at the national context for the technical quality of its products. The floor and wall tile industry, however, is little developed since the state has only one company that produces red clay-based ceramic tiles. This thesis aims at using the predominantly illitic basic mass of the above mentioned industry, with the addition of feldspar and/or kaolin residue in order to obtain products of higher technical quality. Kaolin residue consists basically of kaolinite, muscovite mica and quartz; the feldspar used was potassic. In this experiment, basic mass (MB) was used for experimental control and fifteen formulations codified as follows: F2, F4, F8, F16, F32, FR2, FR4, FR8, FR16, FR32, R2, R4, R8, R16 and R32. All raw materials were dry-milled, classified, formulated and then humidified to 10% water. Thereafter, test samples were produced by unixial pressing process in a rectangular steel matrix (60.0 x 20.0 x 5.0) mm3 at (25 MPa). They were fired at four temperatures: 1080°C, 1120°C, 1160°C, with a heating rate of 10°C/min during up to 10 min in an electric oven, and the last one in an industrial oven with a peak of 1140°C, aim ing to confirm the results found in laboratory and, finally, technological tests were performed: MEA, RL, AA, PA, TRF and PF. The results revealed that the residue under study can be considered a raw material with large potential in the industry of red clay-based ceramic tiles, since the results found both in laboratory and in the industry have shown that the test samples produced from the formulations with up to 4% feldspar and those produced with up to 8% feldspar and residue permitted a reduction in the water absorption rate and an increase in the mechanical resistance while those samples produced with up to 4% residue had an increase in the mechanical resistance when compared to those produced from the basic mass and that the formulation with 2% feldspar and residue presented the best technological properties, lowering the sintering temperature down to 1120°C

As ligas com memória de forma Ni-Ti apresentam diversas características bastante úteis, das quais podemos realçar a sua elevada resistência à corrosão, às vibrações e geração de forças superiores quando comparadas com outros atuadores. Estas ligas apresentam diversas áreas de aplicabilidade em diferentes aéreas de pesquisa, como a metalomecânica, a robótica, aplicações espaciais, sendo mais relevante para este trabalho a sua aplicação em mecanismos de segurança para portas e acessos. Com este trabalho, pretendemos contribuir para uma forma eficaz de combate e contenção de incêndios em navios, através da apresentação de um mecanismo que vai permitir o corte de ventilação e isolamento no local do incêndio, permitindo criar uma fronteira de fumos que levará ao combate do incêndio por asfixia. O trabalho descreve um mecanismo idealizado com a utilização de ligas com memória de forma, que vai proceder à libertação de um flap, para isolamento da ventilação, na presença de temperatura proveniente do incêndio. Descreve também ensaios termomecânicos realizados, para determinação das características das molas e seu comportamento em determinadas situações chave. Para isto, irão ser utilizadas duas molas com diferentes gamas de temperatura, com o intuito de demonstrar a eficácia na utilização de diversos atuadores de ligas com memória de forma. Todos os testes foram feitos na presença de gamas de temperatura que se assemelham aos valores de atuação dos sistemas automáticos de extinção por água, pelo que os resultados obtidos, ilustram a verdadeira eficácia e utilidade do mecanismo, em casos reais.

The addition of heavy rare earth (RE) elements to Nd2Fe14B based magnets to form (Nd,Dy)2Fe14B is known to increase the coercivity and high temperature performance required for hybrid vehicle electric motors and other extreme temperature applications. Attempts to conserve heavy rare earth elements for high temperature (RE)2Fe14B based magnets have led to the development of a grain boundary diffusion process for bulk magnets. This process relies on transport of a heavy rare earth, such as Dy, into a bulk Nd2Fe14B magnet along pores, a low volume fraction of eutectic liquid along grain boundary grain triple junctions and grain boundaries. This enriches the grain surfaces in Dy through the thickness of the bulk magnet, leading to larger increases coercivity with a smaller Dy concentration than can be achieved with homogeneous alloys. Attempts to carry out the same process during sintering require significant control of Dy transport efficiency. The macroscopic transport of Dy in Nd2.7Fe14B1.4 based powder packs is studied using a 'layered' pellet, where Nd2.7Fe14B1.4powder is an interlayer and Dy source as a center layer. The sintering of this layered pellet provided evidence for very large effective diffusion lengths aided by Dy rich liquid flow through connected porosity. Approaches to controlling Dy transportation include decreasing the liquid phase transport capability of the powder pack by increasing the melting point of the Dy source and the decreasing amount of RE rich liquid in the powder packs. The solid-liquid reaction is studied in which melt spun Nd2.7Fe14B1.4 ribbons are PVD coated with Dy-Fe eutectic composition and then thermally treated. The resulting microstructure from the reaction between Dy-Fe eutectic coating and Nd2.7Fe14B1.4 ribbon is interpreted as support for a proposed dissolution/reprecipitation process between solid and liquid phases. The estimate the diffusion coefficient and the effective diffusion length of Dy sources in Nd2.7Fe14B1.4 layered pellets and melt spun ribbons were obtained from the calculation of Fick's second law combined with EDS results from the experiment. The results indicate that the effective diffusion coefficient of Dy in the layered pellets is higher than the diffusion in ribbons due to its higher porosity than ribbons.

Recent advances in the electric & hybrid electric vehicles and rapid developments in the electronic devices have increased the demand for high power and high energy density lithium ion batteries. Graphite (theoretical specific capacity: 372 mAh/g) used in commercial anodes cannot meet these demands. Amorphous SnO2 anodes (theoretical specific capacity: 781 mAh/g) have been proposed as alternative anode materials. But these materials have poor conductivity, undergo a large volume change during charging and discharging, large irreversible capacity loss leading to poor cycle performances. To solve the issues related to SnO2 anodes, we propose to synthesize porous SnO2 composites using electrostatic spray deposition technique. First, porous SnO2/CNT composites were fabricated and the effects of the deposition temperature (200,250, 300 oC) & CNT content (10, 20, 30, 40 wt %) on the electrochemical performance of the anodes were studied. Compared to pure SnO2 and pure CNT, the composite materials as anodes showed better discharge capacity and cyclability. 30 wt% CNT content and 250 oC deposition temperature were found to be the optimal conditions with regard to energy capacity whereas the sample with 20% CNT deposited at 250 oC exhibited good capacity retention. This can be ascribed to the porous nature of the anodes and the improvement in the conductivity by the addition of CNT. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies were carried out to study in detail the change in the surface film resistance with cycling. By fitting EIS data to an equivalent circuit model, the values of the circuit components, which represent surface film resistance, were obtained. The higher the CNT content in the composite, lower the change in surface film resistance at certain voltage upon cycling. The surface resistance increased with the depth of discharge and decreased slightly at fully lithiated state. Graphene was also added to improve the performance of pure SnO2 anodes. The composites heated at 280 oC showed better energy capacity and energy density. The specific capacities of as deposited and post heat-treated samples were 534 and 737 mAh/g after 70 cycles. At the 70th cycle, the energy density of the composites at 195 °C and 280 °C were 1240 and 1760 Wh/kg, respectively, which are much higher than the commercially used graphite electrodes (37.2-74.4 Wh/kg). Both SnO2/CNTand SnO2/grapheme based composites with improved energy densities and capacities than pure SnO2 can make a significant impact on the development of new batteries for electric vehicles and portable electronics applications.
