The effect of intergroup competition on group coordination: An experimental study

We report an experiment on the effect of intergroup competition on group coordination in the minimal-effort game (Van Huyck et al., 1990). The competition was between two 7-person groups. Each player in each group independently chose an integer from 1 to 7. The group with the higher minimum won the competition and each of its members was paid according to the game s original payoff matrix. Members of the losing group were paid nothing. In case of a tie, each player was paid half the payoff in the original matrix. This treatment was contrasted with two control treatments where each of the two groups played an independent coordination game, either with or without information about the minimum chosen by the outgroup. Although the intergroup competition does not change the set of strict equilibria, we found that it improved collective rationality by moving group members in the direction of higher-payoff equilibria. Merely providing group members with information about the minimal-effort level in the other group was not sufficient to generate this effect.

How much structure in empirical models?

This chapter highlights the problems that structural methods and SVAR approaches have when estimating DSGE models and examining their ability to capture important features of the data. We show that structural methods are subject to severe identification problems due, in large part, to the nature of DSGE models. The problems can be patched up in a number of ways but solved only if DSGEs are completely reparametrized or respecified. The potential misspecification of the structural relationships give Bayesian methods an hedge over classical ones in structural estimation. SVAR approaches may face invertibility problems but simple diagnostics can help to detect and remedy these problems. A pragmatic empirical approach ought to use the flexibility of SVARs against potential misspecificationof the structural relationships but must firmly tie SVARs to the class of DSGE models which could have have generated the data.

Lähteet ja tutkimukset on sijoitettu osastossa yhdeksi kokonaisuudeksi. Lähteiden joukossa on etenkin merkittävien teologien kootut teokset. Lisäksi on saatavilla runsaasti jakamattoman kirkon ja roomalaiskatolisen kirkon konsiilien dokumentteja. Kirkkohistorian tutkimus kohdistuu 2. vuosisadalta nykypäiviin, ja on keskittynyt etenkin Euroopan, toissijaisesti Venäjän ja Yhdysvaltojen kirkkohistoriaan. Osasto sisältää myös Saksan kirkkotaistelun (1933-45) lähteitä ja aikalaisdokumentteja sekä tutkimuksia kirkkojen asemasta ja toiminnasta tuona aikana. Kirkkotaistelusta on tullut suomalaisessa tutkimuksessa erityisalue, jossa kiinnostus on kohdistunut nk. tunnustuskirkon ja nk. saksalaisten kristittyjen vaiheisiin.

Suomen ja Skandinavian kirkkohistoria

Osasto sisältää lähdekokoelman, jonka keskeisen osan muodostavat Suomen evankelis-luterilaisen kirkon kirkolliskokousten, hiippakuntakokousten, piispainkokousten ja pappeinkokousten pöytäkirjat, sekä suppean kokoelman lähinnä Ruotsin kirkkohistoriaan liittyviä lähteitä. Varsinaisen kirkkohistoriallisen tutkimuksen lisäksi osastossa on Suomen sekä sen instituutioiden ja julkisen elämän alueiden tutkimusta, sekä Pohjoismaiden ja niiden kirkkojen historioita ja aihepiirin monografioita. Osasto sisältää myös kokoelman Suomen paikallishistorioita.
