La sostenibilitat econòmica i tècnica dels repositoris de preservació digital

A partir d"una anàlisi de la bibliografia especialitzada, es presenten els aspectes institucionals, econòmics i tècnics que cal tenir en compte per assegurar la sostenibilitat dels repositoris de preservació digital. En els aspectes institucionals s"assenyala la importància de la cooperació entre institucions. En l"apartat tècnic, l"anàlisi dels costos mostra que les despeses d"emmagatzematge tenen menys pes que no pas es pensa i també es destaca la interrelació entre les dificultats de finançament i les decisions tècniques que afecten el disseny dels repositoris. Finalment s"explica la utilitat de l"aplicació dels sistemes d"auditoria (ISO 27000, Esquema Nacional de Seguretat, DRAMBORA, TRAC) per comprovar la fiabilitat dels sistemes de preservació.

Jornada Life2: British Library, 23 junio 2008

El pasado 23 de junio se celebró en Londres una jornada dedicada a los resultados del proyecto LIFE (Life Cycle Information for E-Literature) , centrado en los costes de la preservación digital. Este proyecto, financiado por JISC y llevado a cabo conjuntamente por la British Library (BL) y la University College London (UCL) se ha realizado en 2 fases: en la primera (2005-2006), se elaboró una metodología basada en ciclos vitales (life cycles) para calcular el coste de la preservación de recursos digitales durante 5, 10 y 100 años. Para ello, se identificaron seis procedimientos (o «etapas») considerados básicos para la gestión de material digital y luego se asignaron a cada uno los principales factores de coste. Impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on Professional Development and Educational Needs of Library Professionals in the Universities of Kerala

The shift from print to digital information has a high impact on all components of the academic library system in India especially the users, services and the staff. Though information is considered as an important resource, the use of ICT tools to collect and disseminate information has been in a slow pace in majority of the University libraries This may be due to various factors like insufficient funds, inadequate staff trained in handling computers and software packages, administrative concerns etc. In Kerala, automation has been initiated in almost all University libraries using library automation software and is under different stages of completion. There are not much studies conducted about the effects of information communication technologies on the professional activities of library professionals in the universities in Kerala. It is important to evaluate whether progress in ICT has had any impact on the library profession in these highest educational institutions. The aim of the study is to assess whether the developments in information communication technologies have any influence on the library professionals’ professional development, and the need for further education and training in the profession and evaluate their skills in handling developments in ICT. The total population of the study is 252 including the permanently employed professional library staff in central libraries and departmental libraries in the main campuses of the universities under study. This is almost a census study of the defined population of users. The questionnaire method was adopted for collection of data for this study, supplemented by interviews of Librarians to gather additional information. Library Professionals have a positive approach towards ICT applications and services in Libraries, but majority do not have the opportunities to develop their skills and competencies in their work environment. To develop competitive personnel in a technologically advanced world, high priority must be given to develop competence in ICT applications, library management and soft skills in library professionals, by the University administrators and Library associations. Library science schools and teaching departments across the country have to take significant steps to revise library science curriculum, and incorporate significant changes to achieve the demands and challenges of library science profession.

Measuring the Maturity of Open Source Software for Digital Libraries: a Case Study of DSpace

The assessment of maturity of software is an important area in the general software sector. The field of OSS also applies various models to measure software maturity. However, measuring maturity of OSS being used for several applications in libraries is an area left with no research so far. This study has attempted to fill the research gap. Measuring maturity of software contributes knowledge on its sustainability over the long term. Maturity of software is one of the factors that positively influence adoption. The investigator measured the maturity of DSpace software using Woods and Guliani‟s Open Source Maturity Model-2005. The present study is significant as it addresses the aspects of maturity of OSS for libraries and fills the research gap on the area. In this sense the study opens new avenues to the field of library and information science by providing an additional tool for librarians in the selection and adoption of OSS. Measuring maturity brings in-depth knowledge on an OSS which will contribute towards the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as explained in the Technology Acceptance Model theory.
