Objectives: To evaluate the effect of chemical degradation on bond strength of resin-modified glass-ionomer cements bonded to primary and permanent dentin. Methods: Class I cavities of permanent and primary extracted human molars were restored with two resin-modified glass-ionomer cements: Fuji 11 LC and Vitremer, and stored in water for 24 h. Half samples were immersed in 10% NaOCl aqueous solution for 5 h. Teeth were sectioned into beams and tested for microtensile bond strengths. Results were analyzed with multiple ANOVA and Tukey`s tests (p < 0.05). Analysis of debonded surfaces was performed by SEM. Results: 24 h bond strengths for Vitremer and Fuji 11 LC were similar. For Fuji 11, bond strength values were higher for primary than for permanent dentin. Vitremer bond strength was similar for both. Chemical degradation did not affect Fuji I] LC bond strength to dentin. However, decreases in bond strength were found for Vitremer groups after NaOCl immersion. Signs of glass ionomer-dentin interaction were evident by SEM analysis for Fuji 11 LC specimens. Conclusions: Vitremer and Fuji II presented similar bond strength at 24. Vitremer dentin bonds were prone to chemical degradation. Fuji II LC-dentin bonds showed typical features of glass-ionomer dentin interaction at the bonded interfaces, and were resistant to in vitro degradation. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) are expressed in apical periodontitis, suggesting a role for these molecules during lesion development. However, the profiles of RANKL/OPG expression in periapical lesions remain unknown. In this study we investigated the patterns of RANKL and OPG mRNA expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction in human periapical granulomas (N = 44) and compared them with sites presenting characteristic bone resorbing activity: healthy (n = 14) and orthodontically stretched and compressed periodontal ligament (n = 26), healthy gingiva (n = 24), chronic gingivitis (n = 32), and chronic periodontitis (n = 34) samples. Both RANKL and OPG mRNA expression was higher in periapical granulomas when compared with healthy periodontal ligament. Distinct patterns of RANKL and OPG expression ratio were found in the granulomas and in different physiologic and pathologic conditions, with characteristic bone resorption activity potentially being indicative of the stable or progressive nature of the lesions. Lesions with radiographic image smaller than 5 mm showed higher RANKL/OPG expression than images greater than 5 mm. Periapical granulomas presented heterogeneous patterns of RANKL and OPG expression, ranging from samples with RANKL/OPG ratio similar to that seen in sites with minimal or absent bone resorption to samples with RANKL/OPG expression pattern comparable with active bone resorption sites.

Background: Fibroblasts are considered important cells in periodontitis. When challenged by different agents, they respond through the release of cytokines that participate in the inflammatory process. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the expression and production of macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 alpha, stromal-derived factor (SDF)-1, and interleukin (IL)-6 by human cultured periodontal ligament and gingival fibroblasts challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Porphyromonas gingivalis. Methods: Fibroblasts were cultured from biopsies of gingival tissue and periodontal ligament of the same donors and used on the fourth passage. After confluence in 24-well plates, the culture medium alone (control) or with 0.1 to 10 mu g/ml of LPS from P. gingivalis was added to the wells, and after 1, 6, and 24 hours, the supernatant and the cells were collected and analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results: MIP-1 alpha, SDF-1, and IL-6 protein production was significantly greater in gingival fibroblasts compared to periodontal ligament fibroblasts. IL-6 was upregulated in a time-dependent manner, mainly in gingival fibroblasts (P<0.05), which secreted more MIP-1 alpha in the lowest concentration of LPS used (0.1 mu g/ml). In contrast, a basal production of SDF-1 that was inhibited with the increase of LPS concentration was detected, especially after 24 hours (P<0.05). Conclusion: The distinct ability of the gingival and periodontal ligament fibroblasts to secrete MIP-1 alpha, SDF-1, and IL-6 emphasizes that these cells may differently contribute to the balance of cytokines in the LPS-challenged periodontium. In this paper we present the composite Euler method for the strong solution of stochastic differential equations driven by d-dimensional Wiener processes. This method is a combination of the semi-implicit Euler method and the implicit Euler method. At each step either the semi-implicit Euler method or the implicit Euler method is used in order to obtain better stability properties. We give criteria for selecting the semi-implicit Euler method or the implicit Euler method. For the linear test equation, the convergence properties of the composite Euler method depend on the criteria for selecting the methods. Numerical results suggest that the convergence properties of the composite Euler method applied to nonlinear SDEs is the same as those applied to linear equations. The stability properties of the composite Euler method are shown to be far superior to those of the Euler methods, and numerical results show that the composite Euler method is a very promising method. In this paper we discuss implicit Taylor methods for stiff Ito stochastic differential equations. Based on the relationship between Ito stochastic integrals and backward stochastic integrals, we introduce three implicit Taylor methods: the implicit Euler-Taylor method with strong order 0.5, the implicit Milstein-Taylor method with strong order 1.0 and the implicit Taylor method with strong order 1.5. The mean-square stability properties of the implicit Euler-Taylor and Milstein-Taylor methods are much better than those of the corresponding semi-implicit Euler and Milstein methods and these two implicit methods can be used to solve stochastic differential equations which are stiff in both the deterministic and the stochastic components. Numerical results are reported to show the convergence properties and the stability properties of these three implicit Taylor methods. The stability analysis and numerical results show that the implicit Euler-Taylor and Milstein-Taylor methods are very promising methods for stiff stochastic differential equations.

Uncontrolled systems (x) over dot is an element of Ax, where A is a non-empty compact set of matrices, and controlled systems (x) over dot is an element of Ax + Bu are considered. Higher-order systems 0 is an element of Px - Du, where and are sets of differential polynomials, are also studied. It is shown that, under natural conditions commonly occurring in robust control theory, with some mild additional restrictions, asymptotic stability of differential inclusions is guaranteed. The main results are variants of small-gain theorems and the principal technique used is the Krasnosel'skii-Pokrovskii principle of absence of bounded solutions.

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of light-curing protocol on degree of conversion (DC), volume contraction (C), elastic modulus (E), and glass transition temperature (T(g)) as measured on a model polymer. It was a further aim to correlate the measured values with each other. Methods. Different light-curing protocols were used in order to investigate the influence of energy density (ED), power density (PD), and mode of cure on the properties. The modes of cure were continuous, pulse-delay, and stepped irradiation. DC was measured by Raman micro-spectroscopy. C was determined by pycnometry and a density column. E was measured by a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA), and T(g) was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Data were submitted to two-and three-way ANOVA, and linear regression analyses. Results. ED, PD, and mode of cure influenced DC, C, E, and T(g) of the polymer. A significant positive correlation was found between ED and DC (r = 0.58), ED and E (r = 0.51), and ED and T(g) (r = 0.44). Taken together, ED and PD were significantly related to DC and E. The regression coefficient was positive for ED and negative for PD. Significant positive correlations were detected between DC and C (r = 0.54), DC and E (r = 0.61), and DC and T(g) (r = 0.53). Comparisons between continuous and pulse-delay modes of cure showed significant influence of mode of cure: pulse-delay curing resulted in decreased DC, decreased C, and decreased T(g). Influence of mode of cure, when comparing continuous and step modes of cure, was more ambiguous. A complex relationship exists between curing protocol, microstructure of the resin and the investigated properties. The overall performance of a composite is thus indirectly affected by the curing protocol adopted, and the desired reduction of C may be in fact a consequence of the decrease in DC. A difference inclusion x(k+1) is an element of Ax(k), where A is a compact set of matrices, is asymptotically stable if and only if A can be extended to a set B of nonnegative matrices B with \ \B \ \ (1) < 1 or \ \B \ \ (infinity) < 1. Similar results are derived for differential inclusions.

In this paper we discuss implicit methods based on stiffly accurate Runge-Kutta methods and splitting techniques for solving Stratonovich stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Two splitting techniques: the balanced splitting technique and the deterministic splitting technique, are used in this paper. We construct a two-stage implicit Runge-Kutta method with strong order 1.0 which is corrected twice and no update is needed. The stability properties and numerical results show that this approach is suitable for solving stiff SDEs. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A social identity theory of leadership is described that views leadership as a group process generated by social categorization and prototype-based depersonalization processes associated with social identity. Group identification, as self-categorization, constructs an intragroup prototypicality gradient that invests the most prototypical member with the appearance of having influence; the appearance arises because members cognitively and behaviorally conform to the prototype. The appearance of influence becomes a reality through depersonalized social attraction processes that make followers agree and comply with the leader's ideas and suggestions. Consensual social attraction also imbues the leader with apparent status and creates a status-based structural differentiation within the group into leader(s) and followers, which has characteristics of unequal status intergroup relations. In addition, a fundamental attribution process constructs a charismatic leadership personality for the leader, which further empowers the leader and sharpens the leader-follower status differential. Empirical support for the theory is reviewed and a range of implications discussed, including intergroup dimensions, uncertainty reduction and extremism, power, and pitfalls of prototype-based leadership.

This paper compares two hypothetical and identical vehicle deceleration profiles mirrored in time, one linearly descending with time and the other linearly ascending with time. The differences of such profiles on occupant velocity differential and by implication, injury levels at the point of occupant impact are presented. An indifference point is established to assist in comparing which occupant body part will benefit from the altered crash pulse. It is shown that for occupant proximity distances below the indifference point, an ascending profile results in lower injury risk. Above the indifference point, the result is reversed.

Treatment of human cancers with an inherent antigen-processing defect due to a loss of peptide transporters (TAP-1 and TAP-2) and/or MHC class I antigen expression remains a considerable challenge. There is now an increasing realization that tumor cells with down-regulated expression of TAP and/or MHC class I antigens display strong resistance to cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)mediated immune control, and often fail to respond to the conventional immunotherapeutic protocols based on active immunization with tumor-associated epitopes (TAE) or adoptive transfer of tumor-specific T cells, In the present study, we describe a novel approach based on immunization with either genetically modified tumor cells or naked DNA vectors encoding TAE fused to an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) signal sequence (ER-TAE) which affords protection against challenge by melanoma cells with down-regulated expression of TAP-1/2 and MHC class I antigens. In contrast, animals immunized with a vaccine based on TAE alone showed no protection against tumor challenge. Although MHC-peptide tetramer analysis showed a similar frequency of antigen-specific CTL in both ER-TAE- and TAE-immunized mice, functional analysis revealed that CTL activated following immunization with ER-TAE displayed significantly higher avidity for TAE when compared to animals immunized with the TAE alone, These observations provide a new strategy in anti-cancer vaccine design that allows activation of a highly effective and well-defined CTL response against tumors with down-regulated expression of TAP and MHC class I antigens.
