Nine piston cores and six triggerweight cores retrieved from the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean during the Venture 1 expedition were analyzed for dry-bulk density (DBD) and CaCO3 content. Sites are located along a north-south transect at 110°W from 11°N to 3°S and along an east-west transect from 110° to 90°W, at approximately 3°S. The data reveal two DBD-CaCO3 relationships and four patterns of CaCO3 abundance.

One of the primary objectives of Leg 120 was to obtain a high-resolution Neogene stratigraphic section from the Kerguelen Plateau. Site 751, located in the central part of the Raggatt Basin on the Southern Kerguelen Plateau in 1633.8 m of water (57°43.56'S; 79°48.89'E), was selected as the dedicated Neogene site for this objective. High-resolution sampling at Site 751 was used to delineate in detail the Neogene ice-rafted debris (IRD) occurrences on the Kerguelen Plateau. The oldest IRD found at Site 751 was approximately 9.9 Ma, and it was not until approximately 8.5 Ma that significant concentrations of IRD were detected. The first major IRD event at this site occurred in the uppermost Miocene between 6.0 and 5.5 Ma. During this time period, a general climatic cooling and glacial expansion occurred on Antarctica. The late Miocene IRD event was followed by a continuous episode of elevated IRD deposition in the lowermost Pliocene between 4.5 and 4.1 Ma. The 0.4-m.y. duration and the timing of the early Pliocene IRD event on the Kerguelen Plateau corresponds with IRD fluxes observed on the Falkland Plateau and in the Weddell Abyssal Plain. This correspondence of data indicates that a major global climatic event occurred during the early Pliocene. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet may have experienced deglaciation between 4.5 and 4.1 Ma and, as a result, released large volumes of sediment-laden ice into the Southern Ocean.

The Hg distribution and some mineralogical-geochemical features of bottom sediments up to a depth of 10 m in the Deryugin Basin showed that the high and anomalous Hg contents in the Holocene deposits are confined to a spreading riftogenic structure and separate fluid vents within it. The accumulations of Hg in the the sediments were caused by its fluxes from gas and low-temperature hydrothermal vents under favorable oceanological conditions in the Holocene. The two mainly responsible for the high and anomalous Hg contents are infiltration (fluxes of hydrothermal or gas fluids from the sedimentary cover) and plume (Hg precipitation from water plumes with certain hydrochemical conditions forming above endogenous sources). The infiltration anomalies of Hg were revealed in the following environments: (1) near gas vents on the northeastern Sakhalin slope, where high Hg contents are associated only with Se and were caused by the accumulation of gases ascending from beneath the gas hydrate layer; (2) in the area of inferred occasionally operating low-temperature hydrothermal seeps in the central part of the Deryugin Basin, in which massive barite chimneys, hydrothermal Fe-Mn crusts, and anomalous contents of Mn, Ba, Zn, and Ni in sediments develop.

Stable isotopes of sedimentary nitrogen and organic carbon are widely used as proxy variables for biogeochemical parameters and processes in the water column. In order to investigate alterations of the primary isotopic signal by sedimentary diagenetic processes, we determined concentrations and isotopic compositions of inorganic nitrogen (IN), organic nitrogen (ON), total nitrogen (TN), and total organic carbon (TOC) on one short core recovered from sediments of the eastern subtropical Atlantic, between the Canary Islands and the Moroccan coast. Changes with depth in concentration and isotopic composition of the different fractions were related to early diagenetic conditions indicated by pore water concentrations of oxygen, nitrate, and ammonium. Additionally, the nature of the organic matter was investigated by Rock-Eval pyrolysis and microscopic analysis. A decrease in ON during aerobic organic matter degradation is accompanied by an increase of the 15N/14N ratio. Changes in the isotopic composition of ON can be described by Rayleigh fractionation kinetics which are probably related to microbial metabolism. The influence of IN depleted in 15N on the bulk sedimentary (TN) isotope signal increases due to organic matter degradation, compensating partly the isotopic changes in ON. In anoxic sediments, fixation of ammonium between clay lattices results in a decrease of stable nitrogen isotope ratio of IN and TN. Changes in the carbon isotopic composition of TOC have to be explained by Rayleigh fractionation in combination with different remineralization kinetics of organic compounds with different isotopic composition. We have found no evidence for preferential preservation of terrestrial organic carbon. Instead, both TOC and refractory organic carbon are dominated by marine organic matter. Refractory organic carbon is depleted in 13C compared to TOC.

A sediment core from the West Spitsbergen continental margin was studied to reconstruct climate and paleoceanographic variability during the last ~9 ka in the eastern Fram Strait. Our multiproxy evidence suggests that the establishment of the modern oceanographic configuration in the eastern Fram Strait occurred stepwise, in response to the postglacial sea-level rise and the related onset of modern sea-ice production on the shallow Siberian shelves. The late Early and Mid Holocene interval (9 to 5 ka) was generally characterized by relatively unstable conditions. High abundance of the subpolar planktic foraminifer species Turborotalita quinqueloba implies strong intensity of Atlantic Water (AW) inflow with high productivity and/or high AW temperatures, resulting in a strong heat flux to the Arctic. A series of short-lived cooling events (8.2, 6.9. and 6.1 ka) occurred superimposed on the warm late Early and Mid Holocene conditions. Our proxy data imply that simultaneous to the complete postglacial flooding of Arctic shallow shelves and the initiation of modern sea-ice production, strong advance of polar waters initiated modern oceanographic conditions in the eastern Fram Strait at ~5.2 ka. The Late Holocene was marked by the dominance of the polar planktic foraminifer species Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, a significant expansion of sea ice/icebergs, and strong stratification of the water column. Although planktic foraminiferal assemblages as well as sea surface and subsurface temperatures suggest a return of slightly strengthened advection of subsurface Atlantic Water after 3 ka, a relatively stable cold-water layer prevailed at the sea surface and the study site was probably located within the seasonally fluctuating marginal ice zone during the Neoglacial period.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 159, four sites (Sites 959-962) were drilled along a depth transect on the Côte d'Ivoire/Ghana Transform Margin. In this study, the Pliocene-Pleistocene history of carbonate and organic carbon accumulation at Hole 959C is reconstructed for the eastern equatorial Atlantic off the Ivory Coast/Ghana based on bulk carbonate, sand fraction, organic carbon, and other organic geochemical records (d13Corg, marine organic matter percentages derived from organic petrology, hydrogen index, C/N). Pliocene-Pleistocene sedimentation off the Ivory Coast/Ghana was strongly affected by low mean sedimentation rates, which are attributed to persistently enhanced bottom-water velocities related to the steep topography of the transform margin. Sand fraction and bulk carbonate records reveal typical glacial/interglacial cycles, preserved, however, with low time resolution. Intermediate carbonate accumulation rates observed throughout the Pliocene-Pleistocene suggest intense winnowing and sediment redistribution superimposed by terrigenous dilution. 'Atlantic-type' sand and carbonate cycles, consistent with records from pelagic areas of the eastern equatorial Atlantic, are encountered at Hole 959C prior to about 0.9 Ma. Total organic carbon (TOC) records are frequently inversely correlated to carbonate contents, indicating mainly productivity-driven carbonate dissolution related to changes in paleoproductivity. During Stages 22-24, 20, 16, 12, 8, and 4, sand and carbonate records reveal a 'Pacific-type' pattern, showing elevated contents during glacials commonly in conjunction with enhanced TOC records. Formation of 'Pacific-type' patterns off the Ivory Coast/Ghana is attributed to drastically increased bottom-water intensities along the transform margin in accordance with results reported from the Walvis Ridge area. Short-term glacial/interglacial changes in paleoproductivity off the Ivory Coast/Ghana are to some extend recognizable during glacials prior to 1.7 Ma and interglacial Stages 21, 19, 13, 9, and 1. Enhanced coastal upwelling during interglacials is attributed to local paleoclimatic and oceanographic conditions off the Ivory Coast/Ghana. Quantitative estimates of marine organic carbon based on organic petrologic and d13Corg records reveal an offset in concentration ranging from 15% to 60%. Highest variabilities of both records are recorded since ~0.9 Ma. Discrepancies between the isotopic and microscopic records are attributed to an admixture of C4 plant debris approaching the eastern equatorial Atlantic via atmospheric dust. Terrestrial organic material likely originated from the grass-savannah-covered Sahel zone in central Africa. Estimated C4 plant concentrations and accumulation rates range from 10% to 37% and from almost zero to 0.006 g/cm**2/k.y., respectively. The strongest eolian supply to the northern Gulf of Guinea is indicated between 1.9 and 1.68 Ma and during glacial isotopic Stages 22-24, 20, 14, and 12. The presence of grass-type plant debris is further supported by organic petrologic studies, which reveal well-preserved cell tissues of vascular plants or tube-shaped, elongated terrestrial macerals showing different levels of oxidation.

We examined the flux of Al to sediment accumulating beneath the zone of elevated productivity in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean, along a surface sediment transect at 135°W as well as downcore for a 650 kyr record at 1.3°N, 133.6°W. Across the surface transect, a pronounced, broadly equatorially symmetric increase in Al accumulation is observed, relative to Ti, with Al/Ti ratios reaching values 3-4 times that of potential detrital sources. The profile parallels biogenic accumulation and the modeled flux of particulate 234Th, suggesting rapid and preferential adsorptive removal of Al from seawater by settling biogenic particles. Normative calculations confirm that most Al is unsupported by the terrigenous fraction. The observed distributions are consistent with previous observations of the relative and absolute behavior of Al and Ti in seawater, and we can construct a reasonable mass balance between the amount of seawater-sourced Al retained in the sediment and the amount of seawater Al available in the overlying column. The close tie between Al/Ti and biogenic accumulation (as opposed to concentration) emphasizes that biogenic sedimentary Al/Ti responds to removal-transport phenomena and not bulk sediment composition. Thus, in these sediments dominated by the biogenic component, the bulk Al/Ti ratio reflects biogenic particle flux, and by extension, productivity of the overlying seawater. The downcore profile of Al/Ti at 1.3°N displays marked increases during glacial episodes, similar to that observed across the surface transect, from a background value near Al/Ti of average upper crust. The excursions in Al/Ti are stratigraphically coincident with maxima in both bulk and CaCO3 accumulation and the excess Al appears to not be preferentially affiliated with opaline or organic phases. Consistent with the similar behavioral removal of Al and 234Th, the latter of which responds to the total particle flux, the Al flux reflects carbonate accumulation only because carbonate comprises the dominant flux in these particular deposits. These results collectively indicate that (1) Al in biogenic sediment and settling biogenic particles is strongly affected by a component adsorbed from seawater. Therefore, the common tenet that Al is dominantly associated with terrestrial particulate matter, and the subsequent use of Al distributions to calculate the abundance and flux of terrestrial material in settling particles and sediment, needs to be reevaluated. (2) The Al/Ti ratio in biogenic sediment can be used to trace the productivity of the overlying water, providing a powerful new paleochemical tool to investigate oceanic response to climatic variation. (3) The close correlation between the Al/Ti productivity signal and carbonate maxima downcore at 1.3°N suggests that the sedimentary carbonate maxima in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean record increased productivity during glacial episodes.

Detection of climate response to orbital forcing during Cenozoic long-term global cooling is a key to understanding the behavior of Earth's icehouse climate. Sedimentary rhythm, which is a rhythmic or cyclic variation in the sequence of sediments and sedimentary rocks, is useful for quantitative reconstruction of Earth's evolution during geological time. In this study, we attempt to (1) identify sources of natural gamma ray (NGR) emissions of core recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 186 by analyses of physical properties, major element concentrations, diatom abundances, and total organic carbon contents, (2) integrate whole-core NGR intensity of recovered core with wireline logging NGR measurements in order to construct a continuous sedimentary sequence, and (3) discuss changes in the NGR signal in the time domain. This attempt gives us preliminary information to discuss climate stability in relation to orbital forcing thorough geologic time. NGR values are obtained mainly by indirectly measuring the amount of terrigenous minerals including potassium and related elements in the sediments. NGR intensity is also affected by high porosity, which in these sediments was related to the amount of diatom valves. NGR signals might be a proxy of the intensity of the East Asian monsoon off Sanriku. A continuous sedimentary record was constructed by integration of the whole-core NGR intensity measured in sediments obtained from the drilled holes with that measured directly in the borehole by wireline logging, then using a stratigraphic age model to convert to a time series covering 1.3-9.7 Ma with a short break at ~5 Ma. High sedimentation rate (H) stages were identified in the sequence, related to intervals of low-amplitude precession and eccentricity variations. The transition of the dominant periodicities through the four H stages may correlate to major shifts in the climate system, including the onset of major Northern Hemisphere glaciation, the initial stage of the East Asian monsoon intensification, and the onset of the East Asian monsoon with uplift of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.

We compare total and biogenic particle fluxes and stable nitrogen isotope ratios (d15N) at three mooring sites along a productivity gradient in the Canary Islands region with surface sediment accumulation rates and sedimentary d15N. Higher particle fluxes and sediment accumulation rates, and lower d15N were observed in the upwelling influenced eastern boundary region (EBC) compared to the oligotrophic sites north of Gran Canaria [European Station for Time-Series in the Ocean, Canary Islands (ESTOC]] and north of La Palma (LP). The impact of organic matter degradation and lateral particle advection on sediment accumulation was quantified with respect to the multi-year flux record at the ESTOC. Remineralisation of organic matter in the water column and at the sediment surface resulted in an organic carbon preservation of about 0.8% and total nitrogen preservation of about 0.4% of the estimated export production. Higher total and carbonate fluxes and accumulation rates in the lower traps and surface sediment compared to the upper traps indicated that at least 50% of the particulate matter at the ESTOC was derived from allochthonous sources. Low d15N values in the lower traps of the ESTOC and LP point to a source region influenced by coastal upwelling. We conclude from this study that the reconstruction of export production or nutrient regimes from sedimentary records in regions with strong productivity gradients might be biased due to the mixture of particles originating from autochthonous and allochthonous sources. This could result in an imprint of high productivity signatures on sedimentation processes in oligotrophic regions.

The Prydz Bay area is a key region for studying and understanding the history of the eastern Antarctic Continental Ice Sheet (O'Brien, Cooper, Richter, et al., 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.188.2001). Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1165 is situated in a water depth of 3357 m on the continental rise offshore from Prydz Bay and lies in front of the outlet for the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system that today drains 22% of East Antarctica. The site was drilled into mixed pelagic and hemipelagic sediments from the southwestern side of the Wild Drift. The drift is an elongate sediment body formed by the interaction of sediment supplied from continental shelf and slope with westward-flowing bottom currents. The sedimentary sequence is characterized by alternations between a generally gray to dark gray facies and a green to greenish gray facies. The greenish facies are structureless diatom-bearing clays with common bioturbation and larger amounts (>15%-20%) of biogenic silica, dispersed clasts, and lonestones than the dark gray facies, which are mostly less bioturbated clay with some silt laminations (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.188.103.2001). High-quality advanced piston corer and extended core barrel cores containing nearly complete sections of middle Miocene to early Pliocene age allow a detailed characterization of sedimentary cycles and can provide indications for ice advances of the Lambert Glacier system into Prydz Bay, for the extent of sea ice, and for changes in oceanic circulation. The purpose of this work is to provide a data set of coarse-fraction mass percentage (>63, >125, and >250 µm) and biogenic silica content measured on sediments of late Miocene to early Pliocene age drilled at Site 1165. Additionally, high-resolution records of magnetic susceptibility (MS) and gamma ray attenuation (GRA) bulk density are presented. These shipboard data sets were edited postcruise. Furthermore, I provide a high-resolution dry bulk density record that is derived from GRA bulk density and can be used for the calculation of mass accumulation rates. These sedimentological and physical parameters will be used in future work to understand the depositional pattern of alternating biogenic and terrigenous sediments that was observed at Site 1165 (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.188.103.2001).

Geochemical analyses of sediments from the top 24.5 m of Deep Sea Drilling Project hole 596 (23°51.20'S, 169°39.27'W) show great variability in the composition of pelagic clays accumulated in the South Pacific since the late Cretaceous. Elemental associations indicate that most of this variability can be attributed to variations in abundances of six sediment end-member components: detrital (eolian), andesitic (volcanic), hydrothermal, hydrogenous, phosphate (fish debris), and biogenic silica. We develop a sedimentation model which is used to infer processes that might have influenced the accumulation rates of these components over the last 85 million years. The accumulation of eolian detritus in the South Pacific shows some similarities to that observed in the North Pacific and has been largely controlled by global climate trends in the Cenozoic. Much of the variation in the accumulation of other sediment components likely reflects the paleoceanographic evolution of the South Pacific. The most notable change in the sedimentary environment occurred at about the Paleogene/Neogene boundary. At that time, significant changes in the color, mineralogy, and chemistry of the sediment probably reflect major shifts in climate mode as well as oceanic circulation in the central South Pacific region.

The late Cenozoic history of eolian sedimentation in the eastern Indian Ocean was developed from samples recovered during drilling of Sites 752, 754, and 756. Temporal changes in the mass accumulation rate of eolian material reflect major climatic shifts in the southern African source region. A significant drop in dust mass flux values occurs near the end of the lower Oligocene. Younger sediments are characterized by a gradual reduction in dust accumulation rates until the middle Miocene after which values remain consistently low throughout the late Cenozoic, although a slight increase in eolian accumulation rate occurs near 2.5 Ma. This pattern of dust mass flux appears related to the supply of dust-sized particles in the source region and represents a shift in the climatic regime of southern Africa to increasingly more arid conditions throughout the late Cenozoic.

Sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138 in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean were analyzed for variations in eolian accumulation rate and mean grain-size. Latitudinal and temporal patterns of these parameters showed important changes in the intensity of atmospheric circulation and eolian flux associated with the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and suggested that eolian input parameters could be used to define its paleoposition through time. Modern atmospheric circulation in the equatorial region is weakest in the intertropical convergence zone and increases as the trade winds are approached to the north and south. Thus, the expected spatial pattern of eolian grain size would have the finest material deposited beneath the ITCZ and a coarsening of material in both directions away from this zone. Sediments from ODP Leg 138 show this pattern for much of the Pleistocene and Pliocene but, prior to about 4 Ma, begin to lose the northern coarse component suggesting that the ITCZ was located north of its present position during the late Miocene. Eolian flux records also show a latitudinal pattern of deposition associated with the position of the ITCZ that, similar to eolian grain-size variability, suggests a more northerly position of the ITCZ during the late Miocene. Overall, the regional input of eolian material to the equatorial Pacific has decreased throughout the late Neogene. This reduction in eolian input reflects climatic changes to relatively wetter conditions in the continental eolian source regions beginning during the late Pliocene.

Core samples of basalt collected from Hole 504B during Leg 137 were investigated regarding their mechanical behavior. The rock samples were measured for hardness, compression strength, and modulus of elasticity. Abrasion loss of weight and Shore sclerometer methods were used for determining hardness. Static and dynamic methods were used for calculating modulus of elasticity. Test results were compared with shipboard measurements of ultrasonic velocity and dry-bulk density. Test results were interpreted statistically to provide data not only on mechanical behavior changes of the rock but also on the precision of the methods used.
