The objective was to assess in women with children under 5 years old what happened to your pregnancy in relation to dental care, coupled with a probable correlation between the level of their knowledge on dental health and possible reasons which lead or have led to a late seeking such treatment. The interviews were conducted in an environment of health center in the city center and the Odontoly Faculty in Araraquara. Among the interviews mothers, 57% refused the dental treatment during pregnancy. It appears on mothers that are afraid to perform a dental treatment during pregnancy. The misinformation on this issue often associated with this belief in the medical field that dental care during the first three months of pregnancy is harmful to the baby. Such information passed on to mothers leads to a hesitancy with dental treatment during this period. The educational level of mothers did not interfere in this pursuit, and 24.5% of them avoid treatment during pregnancy. The difference, however, is between those mothers of high educational level, performing oral prevention before pregnancy.

The objective of this work is to answer the question posed in the title, based on the texts of D. W. Winnicott. To this effect we addressed the origins of the concept of transitional object in the author’s work, the chronology of its first appearances, direct references to the topic and a discussion of a clinical case. Winnicott rarely referred to a person as being another person’s transitional object, and when he did so, he situated this experience in the field of pathology, and when referring to it, used such terms as “comforter object”, “fetish object” and “regressive object”. In contrast, the concept of transitional object is linked to an experience indicative of mental health, of transition between fusion and mother-baby separation, and of the personal and symbolic use of objects of the sensory field. Maintaining this conceptual specificity enables us to discriminate nuances in the evolution of the use of material objects by the child, and helps to guide anamnesis, diagnosis and the therapeutic process.

Odontoma is a term that refers to a benign tumor of odontogenic and mixed nature, composed of epithelial and mesenchymal components. Histologically, they are compounds of different configurations including dental enamel, dentin, cementum and in some cases the pulp tissue. A slow growing asymptomatic tumor, odontoma is usually discovered through routine radiographic examination. A 3-year old male patient sought care at the School of Dentistry’s Baby Clinic (UNESP-Araçatuba), complaining of “small ball close to the teeth.” During the interview, the mother reported that the lesion was observed soon after a trauma, and evolved in less than one month. An ulcerated lesion with a 0.8 cm diameter was found during intraoral clinical examination. It was located in the inferior and anterior region of the mouth, between teeth 81 and 82, and there was also crown distalization. A radiographic examination showed a radiolucent area and root distance. In the absence of clinical and radiographic characteristics suggesting a case of odontoma, the differential diagnosis was peripheral giant cell lesion and pyogenic granuloma. So the area was punctured. Nonetheless, due to the absence of liquid, the surgical removal of the lesion was performed, followed by histological examination, which showed the definite diagnosis of a suggestive case of emerging odontoma.
