Carbon inoculation has no effect on magnesium alloys that do not contain aluminium. The hypothesis proposed in a recent article [Scripta Materialia 49 (2003) 1129] that segregation of carbon plays a major role in the grain refinement of magnesium alloys by carbon inoculation is inconsistent with many of the observed facts. The Al4C3 or Al-C-O hypothesis, which is supported by experimental observations, is still the most reasonable mechanism proposed to date for the grain refinement of magnesium alloys by carbon inoculation. Objetivando investigar os saberes presentes na prática pedagógica de seis professoras que, ao longo de sua trajetória profissional, apresentaram uma prática bem-sucedida na alfabetização, sempre atuando em região periférica de uma cidade da Grande São Paulo, utilizei, neste estudo, entrevista semiestruturada, observação participante e relato de história de vida, no intuito de responder às questões: O que há de significativo nas práticas bem-sucedidas das professoras alfabetizadoras? Quais saberes são mobilizados com os educandos no processo de alfabetização? Como as professoras lidam com diferentes saberes dos alunos e com as situações em que se defrontam com um possível não saber? Inicialmente, descrevo o contexto histórico da alfabetização em 1983, com a implantação do Ciclo Básico de Alfabetização (DURAN, 1995), período em que as professoras-alvo da pesquisa iniciaram carreira no magistério na rede pública estadual e foram desafiadas a uma nova forma de pensar a alfabetização no âmbito da Psicogênese da Língua Escrita (FERREIRO e TEBEROSKY, 1979), embasadas no construtivismo piagetiano, numa ação dialógica com autores que priorizam a reflexão sobre saberes e prática pedagógica (FREIRE, 1996; OLIVEIRA, 1997; ALARCÃO, 2005 e TARDIF, 2007). Os resultados mostram que a constituição dos saberes das professoras na condução do trabalho em sala de aula ocorre ao longo da trajetória de formação e atuação pedagógica, em diferentes momentos: no diálogo com experiências vividas, com materiais pedagógicos produzidos; na relação com as crianças com quem convivem; nos cursos de formação de que participam; nas parcerias e trocas com professores. A criatividade diante dos desafios de alfabetizar faz com que reorganizem o saber e busquem conhecimentos para que a qualidade das intervenções e ações pedagógicas atenda a diversidade que compõe o espaço da sala de aula. Por acreditarem na capacidade das crianças, propiciam atividades desafiadoras que oportunizam a reflexão sobre a leitura e a escrita (FERREIRO, 1989, LERNER, 2002 & WEISZ, 2002), sempre respeitando os conhecimentos prévios do aprendiz que interage com elas e constrói conhecimentos.(AU)

Numerous studies find that monetary models of exchange rates cannot beat a random walk model. Such a finding, however, is not surprising given that such models are built upon money demand functions and traditional money demand functions appear to have broken down in many developed countries. In this article, we investigate whether using a more stable underlying money demand function results in improvements in forecasts of monetary models of exchange rates. More specifically, we use a sweep-adjusted measure of US monetary aggregate M1 which has been shown to have a more stable money demand function than the official M1 measure. The results suggest that the monetary models of exchange rates contain information about future movements of exchange rates, but the success of such models depends on the stability of money demand functions and the specifications of the models.

Helium ion-irradiation experiments have been performed in single layer Cu films, Nb films and Cu/Nb multilayer films with layer thickness varying from 2.5 nm to 100 nm each layer. Peak helium concentration approaches a few atomic percent with 6-9 displacement-per-atom in Cu and Nb. He bubbles were observed in single layer Cu and Nb films, as well as in Cu 100 nm/Nb 100 nm multilayers with helium bubbles aligned along layer interfaces. Helium bubbles are not resolved via transmission electron microscopy in Cu 2.5 nm/Nb 2.5 nm multilayers. These studies indicate that layer interface may play an important role in annihilating ion-irradiation induced defects such as vacancies and interstitials and have implications in improving the radiation tolerance of metallic materials using nanostructured multilayers. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. PURPOSE: To examine whether objective performance of near tasks is improved with various electronic vision enhancement systems (EVES) compared with the subject's own optical magnifier. DESIGN: Experimental study, randomized, within-patient design. METHODS: This was a prospective study, conducted in a hospital ophthalmology low-vision clinic. The patient population comprised 70 sequential visually impaired subjects. The magnifying devices examined were: patient's optimum optical magnifier; magnification and field-of-view matched mouse EVES with monitor or head-mounted display (HMD) viewing; and stand EVES with monitor viewing. The tasks performed were: reading speed and acuity; time taken to track from one column of print to the next; follow a route map, and locate a specific feature; and identification of specific information from a medicine label. RESULTS: Mouse EVES with HMD viewing caused lower reading speeds than stand EVES with monitor viewing (F = 38.7, P < .001). Reading with the optical magnifier was slower than with the mouse or stand EVES with monitor viewing at smaller print sizes (P < .05). The column location task was faster with the optical magnifier than with any of the EVES (F = 10.3, P < .001). The map tracking and medicine label identification task was slower with the mouse EVES with HMD viewing than with the other magnifiers (P < .01). Previous EVES experience had no effect on task performance (P > .05), but subjects with previous optical magnifier experience were significantly slower at performing the medicine label identification task with all of the EVES (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Although EVES provide objective benefits to the visually impaired in reading speed and acuity, together with some specific near tasks, some can be performed just as fast using optical magnification. © 2003 by Elsevier Inc. A theoretical and experimental investigation of the time delay characteristics of fiber Bragg grating-based Sagnac loops (FBGSLs) is presented. Analytic expressions for the phase and time delay of the FBGSL have been derived and excellent agreement is found between their predictions and experimental results for configurations incorporating uniform-period and chirped-period gratings. For symmetrical grating structures, it is found that the FBGSL time delay response is similar to that of the incorporated grating; with asymmetrical gratings, the FBGSL response is quite different. It is shown that wavelength-division-multiplexing filters exhibiting near-zero dispersion characteristics can be implemented using FBGSLs.
