The aim of this study was to develop heterogeneous visible light active photocatalysts using AgBr and Ag3PO4 using CeO2 nanoflakes as an efficient substrate. Ascorbic acid was employed as a fuel to synthesize fine ceria nanoflakes by a facile solution combustion process. AgBr and Ag3PO4 were decorated on ceria to prepare AgBr/Ag3PO4/ceria nanocomposites. The structure of the composite was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Novel flakelike morphology was revealed using electron microscopy techniques. The nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light compared to pristine ceria nanoparticles. The nanocomposite catalyst particles degraded both anionic and cationic dyes. It also exhibited efficient antimicrobial activity under visible light. The AgBr/Ag3PO4/ceria nanocomposite was characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, BET surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the reasons for enhanced photocatalytic activity were elucidated. The presence of silver based semiconductors on ceria has shown to decrease charge recombination through photoluminescence analysis that attributed for enhanced photocatalytic activity. The AgBr/Ag3PO4/ceria nanocomposite has shown a stable performance after many repeated cycles.

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) is a `gold standard' biomarker for assessing the glycemic index of an individual. HbA(1c) is formed due to nonenzymatic glycosylation at N-terminal valine residue of the P-globin chain. Cation exchange based high performance liquid chromatography (CE HPLC) is mostly used to quantify HbA(1c), in blood sample. A few genetic variants of hemoglobin and post-translationally modified variants of hemoglobin interfere with CE HPLC-based quantification,. resulting in its false positive estimation. Using mass spectrometry, we analyzed a blood sample with abnormally high HbA(1c) (52.1%) in the CE HPLC method. The observed HbA(1c) did not corroborate the blood glucose level of the patient. A mass spectrometry based bottom up proteomics approach, intact globin chain mass analysis, and chemical modification of the proteolytic peptides identified the presence of Hb Beckman, a genetic variant of hemoglobin, in the experimental sample. A similar surface area to charge ratio between HbA(1c) and Hb Beckman might have resulted in the coelution of the variant with HbA(1c) in CE HPLC. Therefore, in the screening of diabetes mellitus through the estimation of HbA(1c), it is important to look for genetic variants of hemoglobin in samples that show abnormally high glycemic index, and HbA(1c) must be estimated using an alternative method. The major challenges in Li-S batteries are the formation of soluble polysulphides during the reversible conversion of S-8 <-> Li2S, large changes in sulphur particle volume during lithiation and extremely poor charge transport in sulphur. We demonstrate here a novel and simple strategy to overcome these challenges towards practical realization of a stable high performance Li-S battery. For the first time, a strategy is developed which does away with the necessity of pre-fabricated high surface area hollow-structured adsorbates and also multiple nontrivial synthesis steps related to sulphur loading inside such adsorbates. A lithiated polyethylene glycol (PEG) based surfactant tethered on ultra-small sulphur nanoparticles and wrapped up with polyaniline (PAni) (abbreviated as S-MIEC) is demonstrated here as an exceptional cathode for Li-S batteries. The PEG and PAni network around the sulphur nanoparticles serves as an efficient flexible trap for sulphur and polysulphides and also provides distinct pathways for electrons (through PAni) and ions (through PEG) during battery operation. Contrary to the cathodes demonstrated based on various carbon-sulphur composites, the mixed conducting S-MIEC showed an extremely high loading of 75%. The S-MIEC exhibited a stable capacity of nearly 900 mA h g(-1) at the end of 100 cycles at a 1C current rate.

Pd2Ge nanoparticles were synthesized by superhydride reduction of K2PdCl4 and GeCl4. The syntheses were performed using a solvothermal method in the absence of surfactants, and the size of the nanoparticles was controlled by varying the reaction time. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and transmission electron microscopy data suggest that Pd2Ge nanoparticles were formed as an ordered intermetallic phase. In the crystal structure, Pd and Ge atoms occupy two different crystallographic positions with a vacancy in one of the Ge sites, which was proved by PXRD and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The catalyst is highly efficient for the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol and is stable up to the 250th cycle in alkaline medium. The electrochemical active surface area and current density values obtained, 1.41 cm(2) and 4.1 mA cm(-2), respectively, are superior to those of the commercial Pd on carbon. The experimentally observed data were interpreted in terms of the combined effect of adsorption energies of CH3CO and OH radical, d-band center model, and work function of the corresponding catalyst surfaces.

In the quest for harnessing more power from the sun for water treatment by photoelectrochemical degradation, we prepared a novel photoanode of exfoliated graphite (EG)-ZnO nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was characterised by X-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyser, thermal gravimetric analyser, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The EG-ZnO nanocomposite was fabricated into a photoanode and applied for the photoelectrochemical degradation of 0.1 x 10(-4) M eosin yellowish dye in 0.1 M Na2SO4 under visible light irradiation. The degradation was monitored with a visible spectrophotometer. The photoelectrochemical degradation process resulted in enhanced degradation efficiency of ca. 93 % with kinetic rate of 11.0 x 10(-3) min(-1) over photolysis and electrochemical oxidation processes which exhibited lower degradation efficiencies of 35 and 40 % respectively.

With the pressing need to meet an ever-increasing energy demand, the combustion systems utilizing fossil fuels have been the major contributors to carbon footprint. As the combustion of conventional energy resources continue to produce significant Green House gas (GHG) emissions, there is a strong emphasis to either upgrade or find an energy-efficient eco-friendly alternative to the traditional hydrocarbon fuels. With recent developments in nanotechnology, the ability to manufacture materials with custom tailored properties at nanoscale has led to the discovery of a new class of high energy density fuels containing reactive metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Due to the high reactive interfacial area and enhanced thermal and mass transport properties of nanomaterials, the high heat of formation of these metallic fuels can now be released rapidly, thereby saving on specific fuel consumption and hence reducing GHG emissions. In order to examine the efficacy of nanofuels in energetic formulations, it is imperative to first study their combustion characteristics at the droplet scale that form the fundamental building block for any combustion system utilizing liquid fuel spray. During combustion of such multiphase, multicomponent droplets, the phenomenon of diffusional entrapment of high volatility species leads to its explosive boiling (at the superheat limit) thereby leading to an intense internal pressure build-up. This pressure upsurge causes droplet fragmentation either in form of a microexplosion or droplet puffing followed by atomization (with formation of daughter droplets) featuring disruptive burning. Both these atomization modes represent primary mechanisms for extracting the high oxidation energies of metal NP additives by exposing them to the droplet flame (with daughter droplets acting as carriers of NPs). Atomization also serves as a natural mechanism for uniform distribution and mixing of the base fuel and enhancing burning rates (due to increase in specific surface area through formation of smaller daughter droplets). However, the efficiency of atomization depends on the thermo-physical properties of the base fuel, NP concentration and type. For instance, at dense loading NP agglomeration may lead to shell formation which would sustain the pressure upsurge and hence suppress atomization thereby reducing droplet gasification rate. Contrarily, the NPs may act as nucleation sites and aid boiling and the radiation absorption by NPs (from the flame) may lead to enhanced burning rates. Thus, nanoadditives may have opposing effects on the burning rate depending on the relative dominance of processes occurring at the droplet scale. The fundamental idea in this study is to: First, review different thermo-physical processes that occur globally at the droplet and sub-droplet scale such as surface regression, shell formation due to NP agglomeration, internal boiling, atomization/NP transport to flame zone and flame acoustic interaction that occur at the droplet scale and second, understand how their interaction changes as a function of droplet size, NP type, NP concentration and the type of base fuel. This understanding is crucial for obtaining phenomenological insights on the combustion behavior of novel nanofluid fuels that show great promise for becoming the next-generation fuels. In this report, the issue related to nanoparticle (NP) agglomeration upon increasing their loading amount into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been addressed by functionalization of MOFs with alkyne groups. The alkynophilicity of the Pd2+ (or other noble metals) ions has been utilized successfully for significant loading of Pd NPs into alkyne functionalized MOFs. It has been shown here that the size and loading amount of Pd NPs are highly dependent on the surface area and pore width of the MOFs. The loading amount of Pd NPs was increased monotonically without altering their size distribution on a particular MOF. Importantly, the distinct role of alkyne groups for Pe(2+) stabilization has also been demonstrated by performing a control experiment considering a MOF without an alkyne moiety. The preparation of NPs involved two distinct steps viz. adsorption of metal ions inside MOFs and reduction of metal ions. Both of these steps were monitored by microscopic techniques. This report also demonstrates the applicability of Pd@MOF NPs as extremely efficient heterogeneous catalysts for Heck-coupling and hydrogenation reactions of aryl bromides or iodides and alkenes, respectively.

This study presents a plausible dual-site mechanism and microkinetic model for CO oxidation over palladium-substituted ceria incorporating the theoretical oxygen storage capacity of different-catalysts into the kinetic model. A rate expression without prior assumption of rate-determining steps has been developed for the proposed microkinetic model using reaction route analysis. Experiments were conducted using various percentages of palladium in ceria that were synthesized by solution combustion. Obtained catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements. A detailed mechanism was, developed, and the kinetic parameters and rate expression were validated with the conversion data obtained in the presence of the catalysts. Furthermore, a reduced rate expression based on rate-determining step and most abundant reactive intermediate approximation was obtained and tested against the original rate expression for different experimental conditions. From the results obtained it was concluded that the simulated rate predictions matched the experimental trend with reasonable accuracy, validating the kinetic parameters proposed it this study.

A poly(Nile blue) modified glassy carbon electrode (PNBMGCE) was fabricated by electropolymerisation of Nile blue (NB) monomer using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and was used for the determination of paracetamol (ACOP), tramadol (TRA) and caffeine (CAF). The electrochemical investigations showed that PNB - film formed on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) improved the electroactive surface area and displayed a remarkable increase in the peak current and a substantial decrease in over potential of ACOP, TRA and CAF when compared to bare GCE. The dependence of peak current and potential on pH, sweep rate and concentration were also investigated at the surface of PNBMGCE. It showed good sensitivity and selectivity in a wide linear range from 2.0 x 10(-7) to 1.62 x 10(-5) M, 1.0 x 10(-6) to 3.1 x 10(-4) M and 8.0 x 10(-7) to 2.0 x 10(-5) M, with detection limits of 0.08, 0.5 and 0.1 mu M, for ACOP, TRA and CAF, respectively. The PNBMGCE was also successfully applied for the determination of ACOP, TRA and CAF in pharmaceutical dosage forms. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Layered composite samples of lithium-rich manganese oxide (Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2) are prepared by a reverse microemutsion route employing a soft polymer template and studied as a positive electrode material. The product samples possess dual porosity with distribution of pores at 3.5 and 60 nm. Pore volume and surface area decrease on increasing the temperature of preparation. Nevertheless, the electrochemical activity of the composite increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity value of the samples prepared at 800 and 900 degrees C is about 240 mA h g(-1) at a specific current of 25 mA g(-1) with a good cycling stability. The composite sample heated at 900 degrees C possesses a high rate capability with a discharge capacity of 100 mA h g(-1) at a specific current of 500 mA g(-1). The high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the composite sample.

This study focuses on addressing the propagation front movement in a co-current downdraft gasification system. A detailed single particle modeling analysis extended to the packed bed reactor is used to compare with the experimental measurement as well those available in the literature. This model for biomass gasification systems considered pyrolysis process, gas phase volatile combustion, and heterogeneous char reactions along with gas phase reactions in the packed bed. The pyrolysis kinetics has a critical influence on the gasification process. The propagation front has been shown to increase with air mass flux, attains a peak and then decreases with further increase in air mass flux and finally approaches negative propagation rate. This indicates that front is receding, or no upward movement() bra her it is moving downward towards the char bed. The propagation rate correlates with mass flux as (m) over dot `'(0.883) during the increasing regimes of the front movement The study clearly identifies that bed movement is an important parameter for consideration in a co-current configuration towards establishing the effective bed movement. The study also highlights the importance of surface area to volume ratio of the particles in the packed bed and its influence on the volatile generation. Finally, the gas composition for air gasification under various air mass fluxes is compared with the experimental results. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report a facile synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) nanodendrites of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and nitrogen-doped carbon NPs (N-CNPs) by electroless deposition of Pd2+ ions. N-CNPs being an electron-enriched material act as a reducing agent. Moreover, the availability of a variety of nitrogen species in N-CNPs promotes the open arm structure as well as stabilizes the oriented 3D assembly of primary Pd NPs. The dendrites exhibit superior catalytic activity for methanol (0.5 M) oxidation in alkaline media (1 M NaOH) which is ascribed to the large electrochemical active surface area and the enhanced mass activity with repeated use. Further mass activity improvement has been realized after acid-treatment of dendrites which is attributed to the increment in the -OH group. The dendrites show higher mass activity (J(f) similar to 653 A g(-1)) in comparison with a commercial Pt-carbon/Pd-carbon (Pt-C/Pd-C) catalyst (J(f) similar to 46 and 163 A g(-1), respectively), better operational stability, superior CO tolerance with I-f/I-b (similar to 3.7) over a commercial Pt-C/Pd-C catalyst (I-f/I-b similar to 1.6 and 1.75, respectively) and may serve as a promising alternative to commercial Pt-C catalysts for anode application in alkaline fuel cells. To ensure the adaptability of our 3D-nanodendrites for other catalytic activities, we studied 4-nitrophenol reduction at room temperature. The 3D-nanodendrites show excellent catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol reduction, as well.

Stiction in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has been a major failure mode ever since the advent of surface micromachining in the 80s of the last century due to large surface-area-to-volume ratio. Even now when solutions to this problem are emerging, such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and other measures, stiction remains one of the most catastrophic failure modes in MEMS. A review is presented in this paper on stiction and anti-stiction in MEMS and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). First, some new experimental observations of stiction in radio frequency (RF) MEMS switch and micromachined accelerometers are presented. Second, some criteria for stiction of microstructures in MEMS and NEMS due to surface forces (such as capillary, electrostatic, van der Waals, Casimir forces, etc.) are reviewed. The influence of surface roughness and environmental conditions (relative humidity and temperature) on stiction are also discussed. As hydrophobic films, the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) turn out able to prevent release-related stiction effectively. The anti-stiction of SAMs in MEMS is reviewed in the last part.
A quantum dot sensitized solar cell based on vertically aligned carbon nanotube templated ZnO arrays
Resumo:
We report on a quantum dot sensitized solar cell (QDSSC) based on ZnO nanorod coated vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the electron lifetime for the device based on VACNT/ZnO/CdSe is longer than that for a device based on ZnO/CdSe, indicating that the charge recombination at the interface is reduced by the presence of the VACNTs. Due to the increased surface area and longer electron lifetime, a power conversion efficiency of 1.46% is achieved for the VACNT/ZnO/CdSe devices under an illumination of one Sun (AM 1.5G, 100 mW/cm2). © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

The influence of surfactant on the breakup of a prestretched bubble in a quiescent viscous surrounding is studied by a combination of direct numerical simulation and the solution of a long-wave asymptotic model. The direct numerical simulations describe the evolution toward breakup of an inviscid bubble, while the effects of small but non-zero interior viscosity are readily included in the long-wave model for a fluid thread in the Stokes flow limit. The direct numerical simulations use a specific but realizable and representative initial bubble shape to compare the evolution toward breakup of a clean or surfactant-free bubble and a bubble that is coated with insoluble surfactant. A distinguishing feature of the evolution in the presence of surfactant is the interruption of bubble breakup by formation of a slender quasi-steady thread of the interior fluid. This forms because the decrease in surface area causes a decrease in the surface tension and capillary pressure, until at a small but non-zero radius, equilibrium occurs between the capillary pressure and interior fluid pressure. The long-wave asymptotic model, for a thread with periodic boundary conditions, explains the principal mechanism of the slender thread's formation and confirms, for example, the relatively minor role played by the Marangoni stress. The large-time evolution of the slender thread and the precise location of its breakup are, however, influenced by effects such as the Marangoni stress and surface diffusion of surfactant. © 2008 Cambridge University Press.
