Nanotechnology encompasses the design, characterisation, production and application of materials and systems by controlling shape and size at the nanoscale (nanometres). Nanomaterials may differ from other materials because of their relatively large specific surface area, such that surface properties become particularly important. There has been rapid growth in investment in nanotechnology by both the public and private sectors worldwide. In the EU, nanotechnology is expected to become an important strategic contributor to achieving economic gain and societal and individual benefits. At the same time there is continuing scientific uncertainty and controversy about the safety of nanomaterials. It is important to ensure that timely policy development takes this into consideration. Uncertainty about safety may lead to polarised public debate and to business unwillingness to invest further. A clear regulatory framework to address potential health and environmental impacts, within the wider context of evaluating and communicating the benefit-risk balance, must be a core part of Europe's integrated efforts for nanotechnology innovation. While a number of studies have been carried out on the effect of environmental nanoparticles, e.g. from combustion processes, on human health, there is yet no generally acceptable paradigm for safety assessment of nanomaterials in consumer and other products. Therefore, a working group was established to consider issues for the possible impact of nanomaterials on human health focussing specifically on engineered nanomaterials. This represents the first joint initiative between EASAC and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The working group was given the remit to describe the state of the art of benefits and potential risks, current methods for safety assessment, and to evaluate their relevance, identify knowledge gaps in studying the safety of current nanomaterials, and recommend on priorities for nanomaterial research and the regulatory framework. This report focuses on key principles and issues, cross-referencing other sources for detailed information, rather than attempting a comprehensive account of the science. The focus is on human health although environmental effects are also discussed when directly relevant to health

The Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control works to reduce tobacco use and the toll of tobacco-caused disease and death by preventing youth from starting, helping Iowans to quit, and preventing exposure to secondhand smoke. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death for Iowans, taking the lives of more than 4,400 adults each year. Estimated annual health care costs in Iowa directly related to tobacco use now total $1 billion.

CONTEXT: Communication guidelines often advise physicians to disclose to their patients medical uncertainty regarding the diagnosis, origin of the problem, and treatment. However, the effect of the expression of such uncertainty on patient outcomes (e.g. satisfaction) has produced conflicting results in the literature that indicate either no effect or a negative effect. The differences in the results of past studies may be explained by the fact that potential gender effects on the link between physician-expressed uncertainty and patient outcomes have not been investigated systematically. OBJECTIVES: On the basis of previous research documenting indications that patients may judge female physicians by more severe criteria than they do male physicians, and that men are more prejudiced than women towards women, we predicted that physician-expressed uncertainty would have more of a negative impact on patient satisfaction when the physician in question was female rather than male, and especially when the patient was a man. METHODS: We conducted two studies with complementary designs. Study 1 was a randomised controlled trial conducted in a simulated setting (120 analogue patients Analogue patients are healthy participants asked to put themselves in the shoes of real medical patients by imagining being the patients of physicians shown on videos); Study 2 was a field study conducted in real medical interviews (36 physicians, 69 patients). In Study 1, participants were presented with vignettes that varied in terms of the physician's gender and physician-expressed uncertainty (high versus low). In Study 2, physicians were filmed during real medical consultations and the level of uncertainty they expressed was coded by an independent rater according to the videos. In both studies, patient satisfaction was assessed using a questionnaire. RESULTS: The results confirmed that expressed uncertainty was negatively related to patient satisfaction only when the physician was a woman (Studies 1 and 2) and when the patient was a man (Study 2). CONCLUSIONS: We believe that patients have the right to be fully informed of any medical uncertainties. If our results are confirmed in further research, the question of import will refer not to whether female physicians should communicate uncertainty, but to how they should communicate it. For instance, if it proves true that uncertainty negatively impacts on (male) patients' satisfaction, female physicians might want to counterbalance this impact by emphasizing other communication skills.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on kehittää prosessi yrityksen strategisten investointien hal-lintaan siten, että yrityksen strateginen arkkitehtuuri mukailee dynaamisten mark-kinoiden jatkuvasti muuttuvia kriittisiä menestystekijöitä. Tutkielma tarjoaa ratkai-sun strategisten investointien kohtaamaan epävarmuuteen, kompleksisuuteen ja si-säisiin konflikteihin luomalla dynaamisiin kyvykkyyksiin perustuvan prosessin, joka toteutetaan ryhmäpäätöksenteon tukisysteemien avulla asiantuntijatietoa hyö-dyntäen. Yrityksen strateginen arkkitehtuuri on mahdollista mallintaa skenaariopohjaisen strategiakartan eli kyvykkyyskartan avulla. Kyvykkyyskarttaan sisällytetyt QFD- ja AHP-mallit mahdollistavat strategisten investointien arvottamisen markkinoiden kriittisten menestystekijöiden suhteen. Dynaamisiin kyvykkyyksiin perustuvat lead user- ja skenaariosuunnitteluvaiheet mahdollistavat puolestaan joustavan investoin-tistrategian luonnin. Tutkielma osoittaa dynaamisia kyvykkyyksiä ja ryhmäpäätök-senteon tukisysteemejä hyödyntävän strategisten investointien hallintaprosessin tarjoavan ratkaisun strategisien investointipäätösten kohtaamiin haasteisiin.Ky-vykkyyskarttaan pohjautuvan strategisen arkkitehtuurin optimointimallin katsottiin olevan realistinen ja uskottava ja korostavan investointien strategisia vaikutuksia.
