Load and resistance factor design (LRFD) approach for the design of reinforced soil walls is presented to produce designs with consistent and uniform levels of risk for the whole range of design applications. The evaluation of load and resistance factors for the reinforced soil walls based on reliability theory is presented. A first order reliability method (FORM) is used to determine appropriate ranges for the values of the load and resistance factors. Using pseudo-static limit equilibrium method, analysis is conducted to evaluate the external stability of reinforced soil walls subjected to earthquake loading. The potential failure mechanisms considered in the analysis are sliding failure, eccentricity failure of resultant force (or overturning failure) and bearing capacity failure. The proposed procedure includes the variability associated with reinforced backfill, retained backfill, foundation soil, horizontal seismic acceleration and surcharge load acting on the wall. Partial factors needed to maintain the stability against three modes of failure by targeting component reliability index of 3.0 are obtained for various values of coefficients of variation (COV) of friction angle of backfill and foundation soil, distributed dead load surcharge, cohesion of the foundation soil and horizontal seismic acceleration. A comparative study between LRFD and allowable stress design (ASD) is also presented with a design example. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bentonite clay is identified as potential buffer in deep geological repositories (DGR) that store high level radioactive wastes (HLW) as the expansive clay satisfies the expected mechanical and physicochemical functions of the buffer material. In the deep geological disposal of HLW, iodine-129 is one of the significant nuclides, attributable to its long half-life (half life 1⁄4 1:7 × 107 years). However, the negative charge on the basal surface of bentonite particles precludes retention of iodide anions. To render the bentonite effective in retaining hazardous iodide species in DGR, improvement of the anion retention capacity of bentonite becomes imperative. The iodide retention capac-ity of bentonite is improved by admixing 10 and 20% Ag-kaolinite (Ag-K) with bentonite (B) on a dry mass basis. The present study produced Ag-kaolinite by heating silver nitrate-kaolinite mixes at 400°C. Marginal release of iodide retained by Ag-kaolinite occurred under extreme acidic (pH 1⁄4 2:5) and alkaline (pH 1⁄4 12:5) conditions. The swell pressure and iodide etention results of the B-Ag-K specimens bring out that mixing Ag-K with bentonite does not chemically modify the expansive clay; the mixing is physical in nature and Ag-K presence only contributes to iodide retention of the admixture. Design of ternary cocrystals based on synthon modularity is described. The strategy is based on the idea of extending synthon modularity in binary cocrystals of 4-hydroxybenzamide:dicarboxylic acids and 4-bromobenzamide:dicarboxylic acids. If a system contains an amide group along with other functional groups, one of which is a carboxylic acid group, the amide associates preferentially with the carboxylic acid group to form an acidamide heterosynthon. If the amide and the acid groups are in different molecules, a higher multicomponent molecular crystal is obtained. This is a stable pattern that can be used to increase the number of components from two to three in a multicomponent system. Accordingly, noncovalent interactions are controlled in the design of ternary cocrystals in a more predictable manner. If a single component crystal with the amideamide dimer is considered, modularity is retained even after formation of a binary cocrystal with acidamide dimers. Similarly, when third component halogen atom containing molecules are introduced into these binary cocrystals, modularity is still retained. Here, we use acidamide and Br/I center dot center dot center dot O2N supramolecular synthons to obtain modularity in nine ternary cocrystals. The acidamide heterosynthon is robust to all the nine cocrystals. Heterosynthons may assist ternary cocrystal formation when there is a high solubility difference between the coformers. For a successful crystal engineering strategy for ternary cocrystals, one must consider the synthon itself and factors like shape and size of the component molecules, as well as the solubilities of the compounds.

Crystals of Boc-gamma y(4)(R)Val-Val-OH undergo a reversible first-order single crystal to single crystal phase transition at T-c approximate to 205 K from the orthorhombic space group P22(1)2(1) (Z' = 1) to the monoclinic space group P2(1) (Z' = 2) with a hysteresis of similar to 2.1 K. The low-temperature monoclinic form is best described as a nonmerohedral twin with similar to 50% contributions from its two components. The thermal behavior of the dipeptide crystals was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Visual changes in birefringence of the sample during heating and cooling cycles on a hot-stage microscope with polarized light supported the phase transition. Variable-temperature unit cell check measurements from 300 to 100 K showed discontinuity in the volume and cell parameters near the transition temperature, supporting the first-order behavior. A detailed comparison of the room-temperature orthorhombic form with the low-temperature (100 K) monoclinic form revealed that the strong hydrogen-bonding motif is retained in both crystal systems, whereas the non-covalent interactions involving side chains of the dipeptide differ significantly, leading to a small change in molecular conformation in the monoclinic form as well as a small reorientation of the molecules along the ac plane. A rigid-body thermal motion analysis (translation, libration, screw; correlation of translation and libration) was performed to study the crystal entropy. The reversible nature of the phase transition is probably the result of an interplay between enthalpy and entropy: the low-temperature monoclinic form is enthalpically favored, whereas the room-temperature orthorhombic form is entropically favored.

Poly(ether imine) dendritic macromolecules were undertaken to study the reversible dendrimer monomer-megamer assembly-disassembly in aqueous solutions. Synthesis of thiol functionalized poly(ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimers and their covalent aggregation behavior in the aqueous solution of ethanol/water (2:1) is demonstrated. The dendritic megamers were characterized using microscopic techniques. Kinetics of the aggregation behavior was followed using turbidity measurements, light-scattering and atomic force microscopic techniques. Inherent luminescence behavior of PETIM dendrimer monomers was retained in the dendrimer megamers also, which allowed visualization of the megamers through confocal microscopy. Extent of thiol functionalities that remained after the megamer assembly was estimated through Ellman's assay. Subsequent to megamer assembly, disassembly of megamers to dendrimer monomers was conducted, using dithiothreitol reagent. Water-insoluble sudan I dye was encapsulated in dendrimer megamer and subsequent release profile was assessed during the disassembly in aqueous solutions. The studies were conducted using first, second and third generations, representing 4, 8 and 16 sulfhydryl groups at their peripheries of dendrimers, respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The 2009 pandemic H1N1 S-OIV (swine origin influenza A virus) caused noticeable morbidity and mortality worldwide. In addition to vaccine and antiviral drug therapy, the use of influenza virus neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for treatment purposes is a viable alternative. We previously reported the isolation of a high affinity, potently neutralizing murine MAb MA2077 against 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus. We describe here the humanization of MA2077 and its expression in a mammalian cell line. Six complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) of MA2077 were grafted onto the human germline variable regions; along with six and eight back mutations in the framework of heavy and light chains, respectively, pertaining to the vernier zone and interchain packing residues to promote favorable CDR conformation and facilitate antigen binding. The full length humanized antibody, 2077Hu2, expressed in CHO-K1 cells, showed high affinity to hemagglutinin protein (K-D = 0.75 +/- 0.32 nM) and potent neutralization of pandemic H1N1 virus (IC50 = 0.17 mu g/mL), with marginally higher IC50 as compared to MA2077 (0.08 mu g/mL). In addition, 2077Hu2 also retained the epitope specificity for the ``Sa'' antigenic site on pandemic HA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a humanized neutralizing antibody against pandemic H1N1 virus.

The subgenus Geckoella, the only ground-dwelling radiation within Cyrtodactylus, closely overlaps in distribution with brookii group Hemidactylus in peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Both groups have Oligocene origins, the latter with over thrice as many described species. The striking difference in species richness led us to believe that Geckoella diversity is underestimated, and we sampled for Geckoella across peninsular India. A multi-locus phylogeny reveals Geckoella diversity is hugely underestimated, with at least seven undescribed species, doubling previously known richness. Strikingly, the new species correspond to cryptic lineages within described Indian species (complexes); a number of these endemic lineages from the hills of peninsular India outside the Western Ghats, highlighting the undocumented diversity of the Indian dry zone. The Geckoella phylogeny demonstrates deep splits between the Indian species and Sri Lankan G. triedrus, and between Indian dry and wet zone clades, dating back to the late Oligocene. Geckoella and brookii group Hemidactylus show contrasting diversification patterns. Geckoella shows signals of niche conservatism and appears to have retained its ancestral forest habitat. The late Miocene burst in speciation in Geckoella may be linked to the expansion of rain forests during the mid-Miocene climatic optimum and subsequent fragmentation with increasing late Miocene aridification. Martensite-ferrite microstructures were produced in four microalloyed steels A (Fe-0.44C-Cr-V), B (Fe-0.26C-Cr-V), C (Fe-0.34C-Cr-Ti-V), and D (Fe-0.23C-Cr-V) by intercritical annealing. SEM analysis reveals that steels A and C contained higher martensite fraction and finer ferrite when compared to steels B and D which contained coarser ferrite grains and lower martensite fraction. A network of martensite phase surrounding the ferrite grains was found in all the steels. Crystallographic texture was very weak in these steels as indicated by EBSD analysis. The steels contained negligible volume fraction of retained austenite (approx. 3-6%). TEM analysis revealed the presence of twinned and lath martensite in these steels along with ferrite. Precipitates (carbides and nitrides) of Ti and V of various shapes with few nanometers size were found, particularly in the microstructures of steel B. Work hardening behavior of these steels at ambient temperature was evaluated through modified Jaoul-Crussard analysis, and it was characterized by two stages due to presence of martensite and ferrite phases in their microstructure. Steel A displayed large work hardening among other steel compositions. Work hardening behavior of the steels at a warm working temperature of 540 A degrees C was characterized by a single stage due to the decomposition of martensite into ferrite and carbides at this temperature as indicated by SEM images of the steels after warm deformation.

Accuracy in tree woody growth estimates is important to global carbon budget estimation and climate-change science. Tree growth in permanent sampling plots (PSPs) is commonly estimated by measuring stem diameter changes, but this method is susceptible to bias resulting from water-induced reversible stem shrinkage. In the absence of bias correction, temporal variability in growth is likely to be overestimated and incorrectly attributed to fluctuations in resource availability, especially in forests with high seasonal and inter-annual variability in water. We propose and test a novel approach for estimating and correcting this bias at the community level. In a 50-ha PSP from a seasonally dry tropical forest in southern India, where tape measurements have been taken every four years from 1988 to 2012, for nine trees we estimated bias due to reversible stem shrinkage as the difference between woody growth measured using tree rings and that estimated from tape. We tested if the bias estimated from these trees could be used as a proxy to correct bias in tape-based growth estimates at the PSP scale. We observed significant shrinkage-related bias in the growth estimates of the nine trees in some censuses. This bias was strongly linearly related to tape-based growth estimates at the level of the PSP, and could be used as a proxy. After bias was corrected, the temporal variance in growth rates of the PSP decreased, while the effect of exceptionally dry or wet periods was retained, indicating that at least a part of the temporal variability arose from reversible shrinkage-related bias. We also suggest that the efficacy of the bias correction could be improved by measuring the proxy on trees that belong to different size classes and census timing, but not necessarily to different species. Our approach allows for reanalysis - and possible reinterpretation of temporal trends in tree growth, above ground biomass change, or carbon fluxes in forests, and their relationships with resource availability in the context of climate change. In this paper, we present novel precoding methods for multiuser Rayleigh fading multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems when channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter (CSIT) but not at the receiver (CSIR). Such a scenario is relevant, for example, in time-division duplex (TDD) MIMO communications, where, due to channel reciprocity, CSIT can be directly acquired by sending a training sequence from the receiver to the transmitter(s). We propose three transmit precoding schemes that convert the fading MIMO channel into a fixed-gain additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel while satisfying an average power constraint. We also extend one of the precoding schemes to the multiuser Rayleigh fading multiple-access channel (MAC), broadcast channel (BC), and interference channel (IC). The proposed schemes convert the fading MIMO channel into fixed-gain parallel AWGN channels in all three cases. Hence, they achieve an infinite diversity order, which is in sharp contrast to schemes based on perfect CSIR and no CSIT, which, at best, achieve a finite diversity order. Further, we show that a polynomial diversity order is retained, even in the presence of channel estimation errors at the transmitter. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate the bit error rate (BER) performance obtainable from the proposed precoding scheme compared with existing transmit precoding schemes.

A supporting electrolyte based on lithium perchlorate has been functionalized with graphene (ionic liquid functionalized graphene (IFGR)) by facile electrochemical exfoliation of graphite rods in aq. LiClO4 solution. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-IFGR films were prepared by electropolymerization of EDOT monomer with IFGR as supporting electrolyte in ethanol at static potential of 1.5 V. The Raman, SEM, and XPS analysis of PEDOT-IFGR film confirmed the presence of functionalized graphene in the film. The PEDOT-IFGR films showed good electrochemical properties, better ionic and electrical conductivity, significant band gap, and excellent spectroelectrochemical and electrochromic properties. The electrical conductivity of PEDOT-IFGR film was measured as about 3968 S cm(-1). PEDOT-IFGR films at reduced state showed strong and broad absorption in the whole visible region and remarkable absorption at near-IR region. PEDOT-IFGR film showed electrochromic response between transmissive blue and darkish gray at redox potential. The color contrast (%T) between fully reduced and oxidized states of PEDOT-IFGR film is 25 % at lambda (max) of 485 nm. The optical switching stability of PEDOT-IFGR film has retained 80 % of its electroactivity even after 500 cycles.

Woody tree species in seasonally dry tropical forests are known to have traits that help them to recover from recurring disturbances such as fire. Two such traits are resprouting and rapid post-fire growth. We compared survival and growth rates of regenerating small-sized individuals (juveniles) of woody tree species after dry season fire (February-March) at eight adjacent pairs of burnt and unburnt transects in a seasonally dry tropical forest in southern India. Juveniles were monitored at 3-mo intervals between August 2009 and August 2010. High juvenile survivorship (>95%) was observed in both burnt and unburnt areas. Growth rates of juveniles, analyzed at the community level as well as for a few species individually (especially fast-growing ones), were distinctly higher in burnt areas compared to unburnt areas after a fire event, particularly during the pre-monsoon season immediately after a fire. Rapid growth by juveniles soon after a fire may be due to lowered competition from other vegetative forms such as grasses, possibly aided by the availability of resources stored belowground. Such an adaptation would allow a juvenile bank to be retained in the understory of a dry forest, from where individuals can grow to a possible fire-tolerant size during favorable conditions.

Various NixCo1-x alloys (with x varying from 0-60 wt%, Ni: nickel, Co: cobalt) were prepared by vacuum arc melting and mixed with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to design lightweight, flexible and corrosion resistant materials that can attenuate electromagnetic radiation. The saturation magnetization scaled with the fraction of Co in the alloy. Two key properties such as high-magnetic permeability and high-electrical conductivity were targeted. While the former was achieved using a Ni-Co alloy, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the composites accomplished the latter. A unique approach was adopted to prepare the composites wherein PVDF powder along with CNTs and Ni-Co flakes were made into a paste, using a solvent, followed by hot pressing. Interestingly, CNTs facilitated in uniform dispersion of the Ni-Co alloy in PVDF, as manifested from synergistic improvement in the electrical conductivity. A significant improvement in the shielding effectiveness (41 dB, >99.99% attenuation) was achieved with the addition of 50 wt% of Ni40Co60 alloy and 3 wt% CNTs. Intriguingly, due to the unique processing technique adopted here, the flexibility of the composites was retained and more interestingly, the composites were resistant to corrosion as compared to only Ni-Co alloy.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase-cyclohydrolase (FolD) catalyzes interconversion of 5,10-methylene-tetrahydrofolate and 10-formyl-tetrahydrofolate in the one-carbon metabolic pathway. In some organisms, the essential requirement of 10-formyl-tetrahydrofolate may also be fulfilled by formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase (Fhs). Recently, we developed an Escherichia coli strain in which the folD gene was deleted in the presence of Clostridium perfringens fhs (E. coli Delta folD/p-fhs) and used it to purify FolD mutants (free from the host-encoded FolD) and determine their biological activities. Mutations in the key residues of E. coli FolD, as identified from three-dimensional structures (D121A, Q98K, K54S, Y50S, and R191E), and a genetic screen (G122D and C58Y) were generated, and the mutant proteins were purified to determine their kinetic constants. Except for the R191E and K54S mutants, others were highly compromised in terms of both dehydrogenase and cyclohydrolase activities. While the R191E mutant showed high cyclohydrolase activity, it retained only a residual dehydrogenase activity. On the other hand, the K54S mutant lacked the cyclohydrolase activity but possessed high dehydrogenase activity. The D121A and G122D (in a loop between two helices) mutants were highly compromised in terms of both dehydrogenase and cyclohydrolase activities. In vivo and in vitro characterization of wild-type and mutant (R191E, G122D, D121A, Q98K, C58Y, K54S, and Y50S) FolD together with three-dimensional modeling has allowed us to develop a better understanding of the mechanism for substrate binding and catalysis by E. coli FolD.

A novel design for the geometric configuration of honeycombs using a seamless combination of auxetic and conventional cores- elements with negative and positive Possion ratios respectively, has been presented. The proposed design has been shown to generate a superior band gap property while retaining all major advantages of a purely conventional or purely auxetic honeycomb structure. Seamless combination ensures that joint cardinality is also retained. Several configurations involving different degree of auxeticity and different proportions auxetic and conventional elements have been analyzed. It has been shown that the preferred configurations open up wide and clean band gap at a significantly lower frequency ranges compared to their pure counterparts. In view of existence of band gaps being desired feature for the phononic applications, reported results might be appealing. Use of such design may enable superior vibration control as well. Proposed configurations can be made isovolumic and iso-weight giving designers a fairer ground of applying such configurations without significantly changing size and weight criteria.
