A novel strategy to construct a sensitive mediatorless sensor of H2O2 was described. At first, a cleaned gold electrode was immersed in thiol-functionalized poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (St-co-AA) nanosphere latex prepared by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization St with AA and function with dithioglycol to assemble the nanospheres, then gold nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the thiol groups and formed monolayers on the surface of poly(St-co-AA) nanospheres. Finally, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was immobilized on the surface of the gold nanoparticles. The sensor displayed an excellent electrocatalytical response to reduction of H2O2 without the aid of an electron mediator. The biosensor showed a linear range of 8.0 mu mol L-1-7.0 mmol L-1 with a detection limit of 4.0 mu mol L-1. The biosensor retained more than 97.8% of its original activity after 60 days' storage. Moreover, the studied biosensor exhibited good current reproducibility and good fabrication reproducibility.

alpha(1)-VOPO4, alpha(II)-VOPO4 and beta-VOPO4 have been investigated as catalysts for the gas phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of cyclohexane to cyclohexene with the addition of acetic acid (HOAc) in the feeds in a fixed bed reactor. Different VOPO4 phases showed different acidity and reducibility. beta-VOPO4 phase is more active than alpha(I)-VOPO4 and alpha(II)-VOPO4 in the ODH without acetic acid addition. In the presence of acetic acid, the acidity of the catalyst may play an important role in the ODH process. Due to higher acidity, alpha(I)-VOPO4 phase catalyst gives better catalytic performances than alpha(I)-VOPO4 and beta-VOPO4 for the ODH of cyclohexane by adding of acetic acid in the reactants.

Graft copolymerization in the molten state is of fundamental importance as a probe of chemical modification and reactive compatibilization. However, few grafting kinetics studies on reactive extrusion were carried out for the difficulties as expected. In this work, the macromolecular peroxide-induced grafting of acrylic acid and methyl methacrylate onto linear low density polyethylene by reactive extrusion was chosen as the model system for the kinetics study; the samples were taken out from the barrel at five ports along screw axis and analyzed by FTIR, H-1 NMR, and ESR. For the first time, the time-evolution of reaction rate, the reaction order, and the activation energy of graft copolymerization and homopolymerization in the twin screw extruder were directly obtained. On the basis of these results, the general reaction mechanism was tentatively proposed. It was demonstrated that an amount of chain propagation free radicals could keep alive for several minutes even the peroxides completely decomposed and the addition of monomer to polymeric radicals was the rate-controlled step for the graft copolymerization.

Rare earth oxide, neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), CO-catalyzed melt grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto co-polypropylene (co-PP) in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was carried out by reactive extrusion. The experimental results reveal that the addition of Nd2O3 as a coagent leads to an enhancement in both MFR and the grafting degree of MAH, along with a simultaneous decrease in the gel content. When the Nd2O3 concentration is 6.0 mmol%, the increment of the grafting degree of MAH maximally is up to about 20% compared with the related system without adding Nd2O3, and the gel content decreases simultaneously to a very low level of about 3%. Attenuated total reflection FTIR (ATR-FTIR) indicates that the gel in the graft copolymers mainly arise from the cross-linking reaction between ethylene units of co-PP. A reasonable reaction mechanism has been put forward on the basis of our experimental results and other mechanisms reported in the literature. We also tentatively explain above results by means of synergistic effect between DCP and Nd2O3, which causes a higher concentration of the macroradical, in particular the tertiary macroradical.

Prussian blue (PB) was modified onto surface of SiO2 nanoparticles and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by electrostatic assembled method. SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs firstly modified by polyelectrolyte exhibited positive charges and negative charged PB could be assembled onto them. UV-vs spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and electrochemical methods were used to characterize these composite nanomaterials. TEM and FE-SEM images showed that PB was easily assembled onto polyelectrolyte modified SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs. Moreover, PB on the surface of nanomaterials was stable and still kept its intrinsic electrochemical properties and high electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide.

Rare earth oxide, neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), -assisted melt free-radical grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) on isotactic-polypropylene (i-PP) was carried out by reactive extrusion. The experimental results reveal that the addition of Nd2O3 into reactive system leads to an enhancement of the grafting degree of MAH, along with an elevated degradation of i-PP matrix. When Nd2O3 content is 4.5 mmol %, the increment of the grafting degree of MAH (maximally) is up to about 30% compared with that of the related system without adding Nd2O3, while the severest degradation of i-PP matrix simultaneously occurs. On the basis of the reaction mechanism of PP-g-MAH proposed before, the sequence of beta-scission and grafting reaction is discussed in detail. It is found that, for the reactive system studied, most tertiary macroradicals first undergo beta-scission, and then, grafting reaction with MAH takes place at the new radical chain ends. The imported Nd2O3 has no effect on the aforementioned reaction mechanism, whereas it enhances the initiating efficiency of the initiator, dicumyl peroxide (DCP).

Graft copolymerization of maleic anhydride (MA) onto poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was carried out by use of benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The effects of various polymerization conditions on graft degree were investigated, including solvents, monomer and initiator concentrations, reaction temperature, and time. The monomer and initiator concentrations played an important role in graft copolymerization, and graft degree could be controlled in the range from 0.2 to 0.85% by changing the reaction conditions. The crystallization behavior and the thermal stability of PHB and maleated PHB were studied by DSC, WAXD, optical microscopy, and TGA. The results showed that, after grafting MA, the crystallization behavior of PHB was obviously changed. The cold crystallization temperature from the glass state increased, the crystallization temperature from the melted state decreased, and the growth rate of spherulite decreased. With the increase in graft degree, the banding texture of spherulites became more distinct and orderly. Moreover, the thermal stability of maleated PHB was obviously improved, compared with that of pure PHB.

A new type of organically modified sol-gel/chitosan composite material was developed and used for the construction of glucose biosensor. This material provided good biocompatibility and the stabilizing microenvironment around the enzyme. Ferrocene was immobilized on the surface of glassy carbon electrode as a mediator. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The effects of enzyme-loading, buffer pH, applied potential and several interferences on the response of the enzyme electrode were investigated. The simple and low-cost glucose biosensor exhibited high sensitivity and good stability.

The graft of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto isotactic polypropylene (iPP) initiated by dicumyl peroxide (DCP) at 190 degreesC was studied by means of the Monte Carlo method. The ceiling temperature theory, i.e., no possibility for the homopolymerization of MA-H to occur at higher temperatures, was used in this study. The simulation results show that most MAH monomers were grafted onto the radical chain ends arising from beta scission at a lower MAH concentration, whereas the amount of MAH monomers attached to the tertiary carbons was much larger than that grafted onto the radical chain ends at a higher MAH concentration for various DCP concentrations. This conclusion gives a good interpretation for the disagreement on the grafting sites along a PP chain. Moreover, it was found that the grafting degree increased considerably up to a peak value; thereafter, it decreased continuously with increasing MA-H concentration. The peak shifted in the lower MAH concentration direction and became lower and lower with increasing DCP concentration. When the DCP concentration was below 0.1 wt %, the peak was hardly observed. Those results are in good agreement with the experiments.

A new compound, (C6H6N3)(7)((PMo12O40)-O-m)(PMo(v)Mo(11)(m)O40) (.) 2CH(3)CH(2)OH (.) 5H(2)O, was synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. This is the first example of benzotriazole-polyoxometalates species. The compound crystallized in a triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 1. 8378 (4) nm. b = 1. 9078 (4) nm. c = 2.1037 (4) nm. alpha = 63.41 (3)degrees. beta = 64.31 (3)degrees. gamma = 68.38 (3)degrees. V = 5.803 (2) nm(3). Z = 2. R-1 = 0.0486, wR(2) = 0.1357. The X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure was constructed by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between dodecamolybdophosphorate anions and protonated benzotriazole cations. The electrochemical behavior and the reduction of nitrite and hydrogen peroxide clectrocatalyzed by the title compound were studied.

An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) was functionalized with an iso cyanate-bearing unsaturated monomer, allyl(3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (TAI), with dicumyl peroxide as an initiator in a xylene solution. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to confirm the formation of EPM-g-TAI. The peak at 2273 cm(-1), characteristic of -NCO groups in EPM-g-TAI, revealed evidence of grafting. The grafting degree was determined with both chemical titration and FTIR. The grafting degree could be adjusted, and the maximum was over 6 wt % without any gelation. The molar mass distribution of EPM-g-TAI was narrower than that of EPM. The rheological behavior of both EPM-g-TAI and EPM was investigated with a rotational rheometer. The apparent viscosity of EPM-g-TAI was higher than that of EPM and increased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. Surface analysis by contact-angle measurements showed that contact angles of EPM-g-TAI samples to a given polar liquid decreased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. We also obtained the dispersion component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), the polar component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), and the total surface free energy (gamma(S) = gamma(S)(d) + gamma(S)(p)) of the grafted EPM. These parameters increased with the enhancement of the grafting degree, which gave us a quantitative estimation of the polar contribution of the grafted TAI to the total surface free energy of EPM-g-TAI.

Microperoxidase-11 (MP-11) was immobilized on the surface of a silanized glass carbon electrode by means of the covalent bond with glutaraldehyde. The measurements of cyclic voltammetry demonstrated that the formal redox potential of immobilized MP-11 was -170 mV. which is significantly more positive than that of MP-11 in a solution or immobilized on the surface of electrodes prepared with other methods. This MP-11 modified electrode showed a good electrocatalytic activity and stability for the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.

The conformation of microperoxidase-11 (MP-11) adsorbed on roughened silver electrodes was studied using surface-enhanced Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that MP-11 was initially adsorbed via its polypeptide chain with a alpha-helix conformation, as indicated by the enhancement of the characteristic bands related to the amides I and III. The weak resonance effect of the porphyrin macrocycle in the near IR region contributes to the spectrum of the heme group. The presence of imidazole as the sixth ligand to the heme iron influences the conformation of the polypeptide chain of MP-11 on the electrode surface. Evaporation of solvent water results in an opened conformation of the adsorbed MP-11. which allows the heme group to contact the electrode surface directly.

Iridium powder is introduced into sol-gel process for the first time to fabricate a novel type of sol-gel derived metal composite electrode. The iridium ceramic electrode shows excellent electrocatalytic action for both oxidation and reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The glucose biosensor based on sol-gel derived iridium composite electrode was fabricated. The biosensor shows highly selectivity towards glucose because of the strong catalytic action of iridium composite matrix for enzyme-liberated hydrogen peroxide at low operating potential, at which common interferences cannot be sensed. The novel type of biosensor can be renewed by simply mechanical polishing with favorable reproducibility and long-term stability.

A novel flow injection optical fiber biosensor for glucose based on luminol electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is presented. The sol-gel method is introduced to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOD) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. After optimization of the working conditions, glucose could be quantitated in the concentration ranges between 50 muM and 10 mM with a detection limit of around 26 muM. Signal reproducibility was about 3.62% relative standard deviation for 11 replicated measurements of 0.1 mM glucose. The ECL biosensor also showed good selectivity and operational stability. The proposed method can be applied to determination of glucose in soft drink samples.
