A series of silicon film samples were prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) near the threshold from amorphous to nanocrystalline state by adjusting the plasma parameters and properly increasing the reactions between the hydrogen plasma and the growing surface. The microstucture of the films was studied by micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The influences of the hydrogen dilution ratio of silane (R-H = [H-2]/[SiH4]) and the substrate temperature (T-s) on the microstructural and photoelectronic properties of silicon films were investigated in detail. With the increase of RH from 10 to 100, a notable improvement in the medium-range order (MRO) of the films was observed, and then the phase transition from amorphous to nanocrystalline phase occurred, which lead to the formation of diatomic hydrogen complex, H-2* and their congeries. With the increase of T-s from 150 to 275 degreesC, both the short-range order and the medium range order of the silicon films are obviously improved. The photoconductivity spectra and the light induced changes of the films show that the diphasic nc-Si/a-Si:H films with fine medium-range order present a broader light spectral response range in the longer wavelength and a lower degradation upon illumination than conventional a-Si:H films. This paper reports the impact of a wide bandgap p-type hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) on the performances of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based solar cells. The player consists of nanometer-sized Si crystallites and has a wide effective bandgap determined mainly by the quantum size-confinement effect (QSE). By incorporation of this p-layer into the devices we have obtained high performances of a-Si:H top solar cells with V-infinity=1.045 V and FF=70.3 %, and much improved mid and bottom a-SiGe:H cells, deposited on stainless steel (SS) substrate. The effects of the band-edge mismatch at the p/i-interface on the I-V characteristics of the solar cells arc discussed on the bases of the density-functional approach and the AMPS model.

The improved mechanical properties of surface nano-crystallized graded materials produced by surface severe plastic deformation ((SPD)-P-2) are generally owing to the effects of the refined structure, work-hardened region and compressive residual stress. However, during the (SPD)-P-2 process, residual stress is produced simultaneously with work-hardened region, the individual contribution of these two factors to the improved mechanical properties remains unclear. Numerical simulations are carried out in order to answer this question. It is found that work hardening predominates in improving the yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength of the surface nano-crystallized graded materials, while the influence of the residual stress mainly emerges at the initial stage of deformation and decreases the apparent elastic modulus of the surface nano-crystallized graded materials, which agrees well with the experimental results. We report a high molar extinction coefficient heteroleptic polypyridyl ruthenium sensitizer, featuring an electron-rich 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene unit in its ancillary ligand. A nanocrystalline titania film stained with this sensitizer shows an improved optical absorption, which is highly desirable for practical dye-sensitized solar cells with a thin photoactive layer, facilitating the efficient charge collection.

Theoretical researches were performed on the CaFe2O4-type binary rare earth oxides AR(2)O(4) (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; R = rare earths) by using chemical bond theory of dielectric description. The chemical bond properties of these crystals were explored, and then the thermal expansion property and compressibility were studied. The theoretical values of linear thermal expansion coefficient (LTEC) and bulk modulus were presented. The calculations revealed that the LTECs and the bulk moduli do have linear relationship with the ionic radii of the rare earths. In the cases of Sc and Y, both the LTEC and bulk modulus values are larger than the lanthanide series. We attribute this to the difference in the electronic configuration between Sc (Y) and lanthanide series. For SrY2O4 and BaY2O4 crystals, the theoretical values of LTEC and bulk modulus agree well with experimental ones.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes@SnO2-Au (MWCNTs@SnO2-Au) composite was synthesized by a chemical route. The structure and composition of the MWCNTs@SnO2-Au composite were confirmed by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy. Due to the good electrocatalytic property of MWCNTs@SnO2-Au composite, a glucose biosensor was constructed by absorbing glucose oxidase (GOD) on the hybrid material. A direct electron transfer process is observed at the MWCNTs@SnO2-Au/GOD-modified glassy carbon electrode. The glucose biosensor has a linear range from 4.0 to 24.0 mM, which is suitable for glucose determination by real samples. It should be worthwhile noting that, from 4.0 to 12.0 mM, the cathodic peak currents of the biosensor decrease linearly with increasing the glucose concentrations in human blood. Meanwhile, the resulting biosensor can also prevent the effects of interfering species.

The phase and morphology variations of titania prepared in ethanol/acetic acid mixture solvents have been systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction results and microscopy observations reveal that pure anatase aggregates consisted of small nanoparticles, pure rutile microspheres comprised of nanofibers, and their mixtures could be obtained by varying ratios of ethanol to acetic acid under solvothermal conditions. The contents of anatase and rutile in the mixed phases also vary with the ratios of ethanol to acetic acid. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy results show that the two phases are separated from each other in final products and form aggregates with morphologies resembling to their pure phase products obtained under favorable conditions. The as-produced rutile nanofibers, either in pure phase or in mixed phases, tend to grow into hollow microspheres.

Spherical SiO2 particles have been coated with rare earth oxide layers by a Pechini sol-gel process, leading to the formation of core-shell structured SiO2@RE2O3 (RE = rare earth elements) and SiO2@Gd2O3:Ln(3+) (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Sm, Er, Ho) particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), and cathodoluminescence spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting SiO2@RE2O3 (RE = rare earth elements) and SiO2@Gd2O3:Ln(3+) (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+, Ho3+) samples. The obtained core-shell phosphors have perfect spherical shape with narrow size distribution (average size ca. 380 nm), smooth surface and non-agglomeration. The thickness of shells could be easily controlled by changing the number of deposition cycles (40 nm for two deposition cycles).
