Small particles and their dynamics are of widespread interest due both to their unique properties and their ubiquity. Here, we investigate several classes of small particles: colloids, polymers, and liposomes. All these particles, due to their size on the order of microns, exhibit significant similarity in that they are large enough to be visualized in microscopes, but small enough to be significantly influenced by thermal (or Brownian) motion. Further, similar optical microscopy and experimental techniques are commonly employed to investigate all these particles. In this work, we develop single particle tracking techniques, which allow thorough characterization of individual particle dynamics, observing many behaviors which would be overlooked by methods which time or ensemble average. The various particle systems are also similar in that frequently, the signal-to-noise ratio represented a significant concern. In many cases, development of image analysis and particle tracking methods optimized to low signal-to-noise was critical to performing experimental observations. The simplest particles studied, in terms of their interaction potentials, were chemically homogeneous (though optically anisotropic) hard-sphere colloids. Using these spheres, we explored the comparatively underdeveloped conjunction of translation and rotation and particle hydrodynamics. Developing off this, the dynamics of clusters of spherical colloids were investigated, exploring how shape anisotropy influences the translation and rotation respectively. Transitioning away from uniform hard-sphere potentials, the interactions of amphiphilic colloidal particles were explored, observing the effects of hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions upon pattern assembly and inter-particle dynamics. Interaction potentials were altered in a different fashion by working with suspensions of liposomes, which, while homogeneous, introduce the possibility of deformation. Even further degrees of freedom were introduced by observing the interaction of particles and then polymers within polymer suspensions or along lipid tubules. Throughout, while examination of the trajectories revealed that while by some measures, the averaged behaviors accorded with expectation, often closer examination made possible by single particle tracking revealed novel and unexpected phenomena.

A two-step etching technique for fine-grained calcite mylonites using 0.37% hydrochloric and 0.1% acetic acid produces a topographic relief which reflects the grain boundary geometry. With this technique, calcite grain boundaries become more intensely dissolved than their grain interiors but second phase minerals like dolomite, quartz, feldspars, apatite, hematite and pyrite are not affected by the acid and therefore form topographic peaks. Based on digital backscatter electron images and element distribution maps acquired on a scanning electron microscope, the geometry of calcite and the second phase minerals can be automatically quantified using image analysis software. For research on fine-grained carbonate rocks (e.g. dolomite calcite mixtures), this low-cost approach is an attractive alternative to the generation of manual grain boundary maps based on photographs from ultra-thin sections or orientation contrast images.

This paper presents a prototype tracking system for tracking people in enclosed indoor environments where there is a high rate of occlusions. The system uses a stereo camera for acquisition, and is capable of disambiguating occlusions using a combination of depth map analysis, a two step ellipse fitting people detection process, the use of motion models and Kalman filters and a novel fit metric, based on computationally simple object statistics. Testing shows that our fit metric outperforms commonly used position based metrics and histogram based metrics, resulting in more accurate tracking of people.

A significant gap in the tourism and travel literature exists in the area of tourism destination branding. Although brands have been used as sources of differentiation in consumer goods markets for over a century, academic research attention towards destination branding has only been reported since the late 1990s. Three important components of the brand construct are brand identity, brand position and brand image. While interest in applications of brand theory to practise in tourism is increasing, there is a paucity of published research in the literature to guide destination marketing organisations (DMOs). In particular there have been few reported analyses of destination brand positioning slogans. The focus of this paper is on destination brand position slogans, which represent the interface between brand identity and brand image. Part of a wider investigation of DMO slogans worldwide, and in keeping with the conference location, the paper focuses on analysis of slogans used by New Zealand RTOs. The slogans are examined in terms of the extent to which they have been limited to ephemeral indifference. In other words, have they stood the test of time and do they effectively differentiate through a meaningful proposition? Analysis of the slogans indicates very few could be characterised as memorably distinctive. This reflects the complexity involved in capturing the essence of a multi-attributed destination in a succinct and focused positioning slogan, in a way that is both meaningful to the target audience and effectively differentiates the destination from competitors offering the same benefits.

Person tracking systems to date have either relied on motion detection or optical flow as a basis for person detection and tracking. As yet, systems have not been developed that utilise both these techniques. We propose a person tracking system that uses both, made possible by a novel hybrid optical flow-motion detection technique that we have developed. This provides the system with two methods of person detection, helping to avoid missed detections and the need to predict position, which can lead to errors in tracking and mistakes when handling occlusion situations. Our results show that our system is able to track people accurately, with an average error less than four pixels, and that our system outperforms the current CAVIAR benchmark system.

It has been proposed that body image disturbance is a form of cognitive bias wherein schemas for self-relevant information guide the selective processing of appearancerelated information in the environment. This threatening information receives disproportionately more attention and memory, as measured by an Emotional Stroop and incidental recall task. The aim of this thesis was to expand the literature on cognitive processing biases in non-clinical males and females by incorporating a number of significant methodological refinements. To achieve this aim, three phases of research were conducted. The initial two phases of research provided preliminary data to inform the development of the main study. Phase One was a qualitative exploration of body image concerns amongst males and females recruited through the general community and from a university. Seventeen participants (eight male; nine female) provided information on their body image and what factors they saw as positively and negatively impacting on their self evaluations. The importance of self esteem, mood, health and fitness, and recognition of the social ideal were identified as key themes. These themes were incorporated as psycho-social measures and Stroop word stimuli in subsequent phases of the research. Phase Two involved the selection and testing of stimuli to be used in the Emotional Stroop task. Six experimental categories of words were developed that reflected a broad range of health and body image concerns for males and females. These categories were high and low calorie food words, positive and negative appearance words, negative emotion words, and physical activity words. Phase Three addressed the central aim of the project by examining cognitive biases for body image information in empirically defined sub-groups. A National sample of males (N = 55) and females (N = 144), recruited from the general community and universities, completed an Emotional Stroop task, incidental memory test, and a collection of psycho-social questionnaires. Sub-groups of body image disturbance were sought using a cluster analysis, which identified three sub-groups in males (Normal, Dissatisfied, and Athletic) and four sub-groups in females (Normal, Health Conscious, Dissatisfied, and Symptomatic). No differences were noted between the groups in selective attention, although time taken to colour name the words was associated with some of the psycho-social variables. Memory biases found across the whole sample for negative emotion, low calorie food, and negative appearance words were interpreted as reflecting the current focus on health and stigma against being unattractive. Collectively these results have expanded our understanding of processing biases in the general community by demonstrating that the processing biases are found within non-clinical samples and that not all processing biases are associated with negative functionality

Introduction: Bone mineral density (BMD) is currently the preferred surrogate for bone strength in clinical practice. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computer simulation technique that can predict the deformation of a structure when a load is applied, providing a measure of stiffness (Nmm−1). Finite element analysis of X-ray images (3D-FEXI) is a FEA technique whose analysis is derived froma single 2D radiographic image. Methods: 18 excised human femora had previously been quantitative computed tomography scanned, from which 2D BMD-equivalent radiographic images were derived, and mechanically tested to failure in a stance-loading configuration. A 3D proximal femur shape was generated from each 2D radiographic image and used to construct 3D-FEA models. Results: The coefficient of determination (R2%) to predict failure load was 54.5% for BMD and 80.4% for 3D-FEXI. Conclusions: This ex vivo study demonstrates that 3D-FEXI derived from a conventional 2D radiographic image has the potential to significantly increase the accuracy of failure load assessment of the proximal femur compared with that currently achieved with BMD. This approach may be readily extended to routine clinical BMD images derived by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Crown Copyright © 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of IPEM. Summary Generalized Procrustes analysis and thin plate splines were employed to create an average 3D shape template of the proximal femur that was warped to the size and shape of a single 2D radiographic image of a subject. Mean absolute depth errors are comparable with previous approaches utilising multiple 2D input projections. Introduction Several approaches have been adopted to derive volumetric density (g cm-3) from a conventional 2D representation of areal bone mineral density (BMD, g cm-2). Such approaches have generally aimed at deriving an average depth across the areal projection rather than creating a formal 3D shape of the bone. Methods Generalized Procrustes analysis and thin plate splines were employed to create an average 3D shape template of the proximal femur that was subsequently warped to suit the size and shape of a single 2D radiographic image of a subject. CT scans of excised human femora, 18 and 24 scanned at pixel resolutions of 1.08 mm and 0.674 mm, respectively, were equally split into training (created 3D shape template) and test cohorts. Results The mean absolute depth errors of 3.4 mm and 1.73 mm, respectively, for the two CT pixel sizes are comparable with previous approaches based upon multiple 2D input projections. Conclusions This technique has the potential to derive volumetric density from BMD and to facilitate 3D finite element analysis for prediction of the mechanical integrity of the proximal femur. It may further be applied to other anatomical bone sites such as the distal radius and lumbar spine.

Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) has great potential to assist vegetation management in power line corridors by providing more accurate geometric information of the power line assets and vegetation along the corridors. However, the development of algorithms for the automatic processing of LIDAR point cloud data, in particular for feature extraction and classification of raw point cloud data, is in still in its infancy. In this paper, we take advantage of LIDAR intensity and try to classify ground and non-ground points by statistically analyzing the skewness and kurtosis of the intensity data. Moreover, the Hough transform is employed to detected power lines from the filtered object points. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our methods and indicate that better results were obtained by using LIDAR intensity data than elevation data.
