The dynamics and geometry of the material inflowing and outflowing close to the supermassive black hole in active galactic nuclei are still uncertain. X-rays are the most suitable way to study the AGN innermost regions because of the Fe Kα emission line, a proxy of accretion, and Fe absorption lines produced by outflows. Winds are typically classified as Warm Absorbers (slow and mildly ionized) and Ultra Fast Outflows (fast and highly ionized). Transient Obscurers -optically thick winds that produce strong spectral hardening in X-rays, lasting from days to months- have been observed recently. Emission and absorption features vary on time-scales from hours to years, probing phenomena at different distances from the SMBH. In this work, we use time-resolved spectral analysis to investigate the accretion and ejection flows, to characterize them individually and search for correlations. We analyzed XMM-Newtomn data of a set of the brightest Seyfert 1 galaxies that went through an obscuration event: NGC 3783, NGC 3227, NGC 5548, and NGC 985. Our aim is to search for emission/absorption lines in short-duration spectra (∼ 10ks), to explore regions as close as the SMBH as the statistics allows for, and possibly catch transient phenomena. First we run a blind search to detect emission/absorption features, then we analyze their evolution with Residual Maps: we visualize simultaneously positive and negative residuals from the continuum in the time-energy plane, looking for patterns and relative time-scales. In NGC 3783 we were able to ascribe variations of the Fe Kα emission line to absorptions at the same energy due to clumps in the obscurer, whose presence is detected at >3σ, and to determine the size of the clumps. In NGC 3227 we detected a wind at ∼ 0.2c at ∼ 2σ, briefly appearing during an obscuration event.

Existing bridges built in the last 50 years face challenges due to states far different than those envisaged when they were designed, due to increased loads, ageing of materials, and poor maintenance. For post-tensioned bridges, the need emerged for reliable engineering tools for the evaluation of their capacity in case of steel corrosion due to lack of mortar injection. This can lead to sudden brittle collapses, highlighting the need for proper maintenance and monitoring. This thesis proposes a peak strength model for corroded strands, introducing a “group coefficient” that aims at considering corrosion variability in the wires constituting the strands. The application of the introduced model in a deterministic approach leads to the proposal of strength curves for corroded strands, which represent useful engineering tools for estimating their maximum strength considering both geometry of the corrosion and steel material parameters. Together with the proposed ultimate displacement curves, constitutive laws of the steel material reduced by the effects of corrosion can be obtained. The effects of corroded strands on post-tensioned beams can be evaluated through the reduced bending moment-curvature diagram accounting for these reduced stress-strain relationships. The application of the introduced model in a probabilistic approach allows to estimate peak strength probability functions and consecutive design-oriented safety factors to consider corrosion effects in safety assessment verifications. Both approaches consider two procedures that are based on the knowledge level of the corrosion in the strands. On the sidelines of this main research line, this thesis also presents a study of a seismic upgrading intervention of a case-study bridge through HDRB isolators providing a simplified procedure for the identification of the correct device. The study also investigates the effects due to the variability of the shear modulus of the rubber material of the HDRB isolators on the structural response of the isolated bridge.

The navigation of deep space spacecraft requires accurate measurement of the probe’s state and attitude with respect to a body whose ephemerides may not be known with good accuracy. The heliocentric state of the spacecraft is estimated through radiometric techniques (ranging, Doppler, and Delta-DOR), while optical observables can be introduced to improve the uncertainty in the relative position and attitude with respect to the target body. In this study, we analyze how simulated optical observables affect the estimation of parameters in an orbit determination problem, considering the case of the ESA’s Hera mission towards the binary asteroid system composed of Didymos and Dimorphos. To this extent, a shape model and a photometric function are used to create synthetic onboard camera images. Then, using a stereophotoclinometry technique on some of the simulated images, we create a database of maplets that describe the 3D geometry of the surface around a set of landmarks. The matching of maplets with the simulated images provides the optical observables, expressed as pixel coordinates in the camera frame, which are fed to an orbit determination filter to estimate a certain number of solve-for parameters. The noise introduced in the output optical observables by the image processing can be quantified using as a metric the quality of the residuals, which is used to fine-tune the maplet-matching parameters. In particular, the best results are obtained when using small maplets, with high correlation coefficients and occupation factors.

Electric cars are increasingly popular due to a transition of mobility towards more sustainable forms. From an increasingly green and pollution reduction perspective, there are more and more incentives that encourage customers to invest in electric cars. Using the Industrial Design and Structure (IDeS) research method, this project has the aim to design a new electric compact SUV suitable for all people who live in the city, and for people who move outside urban areas. In order to achieve the goal of developing a new car in the industrial automotive environment, the compact SUV segment was chosen because it is a vehicle very requested by the costumers and it is successful in the market due to its versatility. IDeS is a combination of innovative and advanced systematic approaches used to set up a new industrial project. The IDeS methodology is sequentially composed of Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Benchmarking (BM), Top-Flop analysis (TFA), Stylistic Design Engineering (SDE), Design for X, Prototyping, Testing, Budgeting, and Planning. The work is based on a series of steps and the sequence of these must be meticulously scheduled, imposing deadlines along the work. Starting from an analysis of the market and competitors, the study of the best and worst existing parameters in the competitor’s market is done, arriving at the idea of a better product in terms of numbers and innovation. After identifying the characteristics that the new car should have, the other step is the styling part, with the definition of the style and the design of the machine on a 3D CAD. Finally, it switches to the prototyping and testing phase to see if the product is able to work. Ultimately, intending to place the car on the market, it is essential to estimate the necessary budget for a possible investment in this project.

Edible mushroom are highly perishable foods. Drying is an alternative to provide safe storage. In this work, the effects of some drying parameters on the quality of Shiitake mushroom were investigated: geometry of the raw material (whole and sliced), drying temperature (50 °C and 70 ºC) and final moisture content (5% and 15% wb). Experimental kinetics of drying was built and color and texture analyses were done in fresh and in rehydrated dried product. The effect of parameters was evaluated by analysis of variance and test of multiple comparisons. Drying kinetics showed that drying happened in falling-rate period and sliced mushroom dried at 70 ºC required lesser drying time than other treatments. Mushroom dried at 70 ºC showed less darkening. Drying time affected mushroom quality, evaluated by great hardness, gummosis and darkening.

Fluctuations in the initial geometry of a nucleus-nucleus collision have been recently shown to result in a new type of directed flow (v(1)) that, unlike the usual directed flow, is also present at midrapidity. We compute this new v(1) versus transverse momentum and centrality for Au-Au collisions at RHIC using the hydrodynamic code NeXSPheRIO. We find that the event plane of v(1) is correlated with the angle of the initial dipole of the distribution, as predicted, though with a large dispersion. It is uncorrelated with the reaction plane. Our results are in excellent agreement with results inferred from STAR correlation data.

The title compound, C11H10N2O3S, was synthesized from furoyl isothiocyanate and furfurylamine in dry acetone. The thiourea group is in the thioamide form. The trans-cis geometry of the thiourea group is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl and cis-thioamide and results in a pseudo-S(6) planar ring which makes dihedral angles of 2.5 (3) and 88.1 (2)degrees with the furoyl and furfuryl groups, respectively. There is also an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the furan O atom and the other thioamide H atom. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by two intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, forming dimers. These dimers are stacked within the crystal structure along the [010] direction.

The title compound, C(13)H(9)F(3)N(2)O(2)S, crystallizes with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The central thiourea core is roughly coplanar with the furan and benzene rings, showing O-C-N-C(S) torsion angles of 2.3 (4) and -11.4 (2) degrees and (S) C -N-C-C torsion angles of -2.4 (4) and -28.8 (4) degrees, respectively, in the two independent molecules. The trans-cis geometry of the thiourea fragment is stabilized by an intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond between the H atom of the cis thioamide and the carbonyl O atom. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds form centrosymmetric dimers extending along the b axis.

We show that commutative group spherical codes in R(n), as introduced by D. Slepian, are directly related to flat tori and quotients of lattices. As consequence of this view, we derive new results on the geometry of these codes and an upper bound for their cardinality in terms of minimum distance and the maximum center density of lattices and general spherical packings in the half dimension of the code. This bound is tight in the sense it can be arbitrarily approached in any dimension. Examples of this approach and a comparison of this bound with Union and Rankin bounds for general spherical codes is also presented.

Honeycomb structures have been used in different engineering fields. In civil engineering, honeycomb fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) structures have been used as bridge decks to rehabilitate highway bridges in the United States. In this work, a simplified finite-element modeling technique for honeycomb FRP bridge decks is presented. The motivation is the combination of the complex geometry of honeycomb FRP decks and computational limits, which may prevent modeling of these decks in detail. The results from static and modal analyses indicate that the proposed modeling technique provides a viable tool for modeling the complex geometry of honeycomb FRP bridge decks. The modeling of other bridge components (e.g., steel girders, steel guardrails, deck-to-girder connections, and pier supports) is also presented in this work.

A method involving bubbling of air through a fibrous filter immersed in water has recently been investigated (Agranovski et al. [1]). Experimental results showed that the removal efficiency for ultra-fine aerosols by such filters was greatly increased compared to dry filters. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) imaging was used to examine the wet filter and to determine the nature of the gas flow inside the filter (Agranovski et al. [2]). It was found that tortuous preferential pathways (or flow tubes) develop within the filter through which the air flows and the distribution of air and water inside the porous medium has been investigated. The aim of this paper is to investigate the geometry of the pathways and to make estimates of the flow velocities and particle removal efficiency in such pathways. A mathematical model of the flow of air along the preferred pathways has been developed and verified experimentally. Even for the highest realistic gas velocity the flow field was essentially laminar (Re approximate to 250). We solved Laplace's equation for stream function to map trajectories of particles and gas molecules to investigate the possibility of their removal from the carrier.

The effects of convective and absolute instabilities on the formation of drops formed from cylindrical liquid jets of glycerol/water issuing into still air were investigated. Medium-duration reduced gravity tests were conducted aboard NASA's KC-135 and compared to similar tests performed under normal gravity conditions to aid in understanding the drop formation process. In reduced gravity, the Rayleigh-Chandrasekhar Equation was found to accurately predict the transition between a region of absolute and convective instability as defined by a critical Weber number. Observations of the physics of the jet, its breakup, and subsequent drop dynamics under both gravity conditions and the effects of the two instabilities on these processes are presented. All the normal gravity liquid jets investigated, in regions of convective or absolute instability, were subject to significant stretching effects, which affected the subsequent drop and associated geometry and dynamics. These effects were not displayed in reduced gravity and, therefore, the liquid jets would form drops which took longer to form (reduction in drop frequency), larger in size, and more spherical (surface tension effects). Most observed changes, in regions of either absolute or convective instabilities, were due to a reduction in the buoyancy force and an increased importance of the surface tension force acting on the liquid contained in the jet or formed drop. Reduced gravity environments allow better investigations to be performed into the physics of liquid jets, subsequently formed drops, and the effects of instabilities on these systems. In reduced gravity, drops form up to three times more slowly and as a consequence are up to three times larger in volume in the theoretical absolute instability region than in the theoretical convective instability region. This difference was not seen in the corresponding normal gravity tests due to the masking effects of gravity. A drop is shown to be able to form and detach in a region of absolute instability, and spanning the critical Weber number (from a region of convective to absolute instability) resulted in a marked change in dynamics and geometry of the liquid jet and detaching drops. Esta pesquisa de mestrado teve como principal objetivo investigar estratégias de cálculo mental, utilizadas por alunos de uma 5ª série/6º ano do ensino fundamental ao resolver cálculos de adição e subtração. Para atingir este objetivo procuramos responder aos questionamentos: Quais estratégias de cálculo mental, alunos da 5ª série/6º ano empregam na resolução de cálculos de adição e subtração? Que relações existem entre o tipo de cálculo envolvido e a estratégia adotada para resolvê-lo? Para respondermos a essas questões, seguimos uma metodologia de natureza qualitativa, configurada como estudo de caso do tipo etnográfico. O trabalho de campo foi desenvolvido em uma turma de 5ª série/6º ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola pública da rede estadual de ensino do município de Serra. A pesquisa aconteceu de maio a dezembro de 2013. Oito alunos resolveram uma atividade diagnóstica composta de quatro sequências de cálculos mentais, a saber, fatos fundamentais do número 5, do número 10, do número 20 e do número 100, dentre adições e subtrações próximas a esses resultados. Todos alunos participaram da etapa de entrevistas. Dos oito alunos, foram escolhidos dados de três que participaram de outras etapas da pesquisa. Os registros realizados pelos alunos na etapa de observação da turma, na etapa diagnóstica e na etapa de intervenção didática, as anotações no caderno de campo e algumas gravações em áudio serviram como fontes de coleta de dados. Utilizamos as estratégias identificadas por Beishuizen (1997), Klein e Beishuizen (1998), Thompson (1999, 2000) e Lucangeli et al. (2003), como categorias de análise. Através da análise de dados, constatamos que as escolhas das estratégias de cálculo mental pelos alunos variaram de acordo com o tipo de sequência de cálculos, a operação aritmética (adição ou subtração) e o estado emocional deles durante a atividade. Foi possível identificar o uso de duas estratégias combinadas, o algoritmo mental e estratégias de contagens nos dedos para grande parte dos cálculos. O uso do algoritmo mental mostrou-se um procedimento de grande sobrecarga mental e, em alguns cálculos de adição sem reserva, serviu apenas como apoio à visualização numérica, sendo executado pelo aluno da esquerda para a direita, semelhantemente à estratégia de decomposição numérica. Os dados deste estudo apontam para: (i) a necessidade de se trabalhar fatos numéricos fundamentais de adição e subtração via cálculo mental de maneira sistemática em sala de aula; (ii) a necessidade de se ensinar estratégias autênticas de cálculo mental para que os alunos não se tornem dependentes de estratégias como contagens e algoritmo mental, que são mais difíceis de serem executadas com êxito; (iii) a importância de entrevistar, individualmente, os alunos a fim de compreender e avaliar o desenvolvimento destes em tarefas de cálculo mental.

Este trabalho Final de Mestrado consiste na elaboração de um relatório de estágio que reportará o acompanhamento por parte do discente de um reforço estrutural de uma edificação pombalina. Desta forma são definidas as principais características construtivas destas edificações, fazendo um enquadramento histórico-cultural e urbanístico do edifício alvo deste trabalho. Uma vez estudado um tipo de construção especial, são mencionados diversos sistemas e metodologias de reforço que se adequam às características singulares destas construções, ilustrando-se procedimentos e técnicas que normalmente são utilizadas na reabilitação. Procedeu-se ao relato dos trabalhos executados na obra, desde a demolição dos elementos degradados e dissonantes com esta tipologia construtiva, a um estudo mais pormenorizado ao solo de fundação encontrado na zona da edificação e soluções de fundação adoptadas. São descritas neste trabalho quais as medidas adoptadas no reforço da estrutura da edificação, evidenciando os procedimentos e técnicas aplicadas pela empresa. No final deste trabalho, foi efectuada uma modelação do edifício da Rua do Carmo num software de análise estrutural SAP 2000, com o objectivo de modelar de forma aproximada a real geometria do edifício e, através da introdução das variadas acções actuantes na estrutura, fazer determinadas considerações do comportamento da mesma face às solicitações impostas. Pretendeu-se ainda estabelecer uma relação entres os resultados obtidos e as técnicas de reforço utilizadas na reabilitação destes edifícios.
